My wife gets sweet potato fries from Trader Joe's, but they are not as popular with the kids as regular potato fries (which cook up pretty crispy and good in the oven without deep frying if you spritz them with a little olive or grapeseed oil).
Fred For Pres..mix up the sweet taters w/ regular fries. I bet the kids will eat them, plus it's just a good combo. There's a good bbq place in KC that does that and that's the first time my kids ever would eat sweet taters. You can do the same w/ brown rice..half white, half brown.mulatto!
First time I had sweet potato fries was at SmashBurger. It was a green eggs and ham situation where I refused to eat them and would not eat them with a mouse, nor in a house, but then I tried them and now I'm a sweet potato fry addict. They're so good! But I hate SmashBurger's habit of adding "smash" to every noun. "Can I get you a smash-napkin to wipe that smash-ketchup off your face?" It's so gimmicky. I think if your food is as good as SmashBurger's, you don't need stupid gimmicks.
Hooters is a good example of needing a gimmick to get people to come back again and again to ingest fecal matter. Men are stupid.

ndspinelli, thanks. I will suggest that to the wife to try. She thinks sweet potato fries are healthier. I am not so sure about that. I cut up yukon golds, red potatoes, and russets and bake them (with the skins on) and they make pretty darn good oven steak fries (provided the oven is real hot and you watch them so they don't burn). Just like O Mike said before, you're saying they had it coming. Are there any more likely motives than Norway "being PC about militant Islam"? Is it more likely because of their participation in the war in Afghanistan since 2002, or for recent moves to expel a radical Ansar-Al Islam cleric, or because Al Qaeda is a group of murderous crackpots? I'm going with any of the above.
Triangle Man--one 200 HP engine? thats for the amateur bass anglers
you want to see BIG? I actually have a picture of 1 35 foot contender with four (count em 4) 250 yamahas on the stern--Saw it a white sound on elbow cay--these guys were the blue water equivalent of tournament bass guys- Dont know what the torque physics of four huge outboards are on one transom, but the two outer were long shaft and the two inner were short shaft (Ok--that does sound a bit porno)--With gas at 6.00 a gallon in the bahamas as of May this baby left one hell of a carbon foot print and a deep gouge in the owners pocket
Triangle Man--one 200 HP engine? thats for the amateur bass anglers
I should have clarified that by "fishing boat" I meant a bass boat on a medium sized fresh water lake. I guess the answer is that 200 hp will get you across Lake Mendota in a couple of minutes. Wouldn't want to waste time puttering along with the 10 hp outboard we used to use.
I haven't been following the argument you seem to be having with Palladian but I don't see anything insulting per see by Palladian use of colorful language to talk about his detractors.. Its very common on the web.
In fact, in last night's post about the military finally accepting gays (and lesbians) Palladian quoted..
"I sense a great disturbance in the Force! People are whinging about gays somewhere!"
Triangle man--the world of professional bass fishing (and now crappie and walleye fishing is indeed an alternate universe)--as ChipS noted above the issue is to get to the "spot" before anyone else.
In the case of this Contender model (flying bride, tuna tower, six outrigger and a couple of downriggers) it is apparently even more important since prizes run into six figures (which will pay for a days worth of gas) These guys throw roostertails getting from point a to b--And the ocean is much bigger that lake mendota
No, as I said, I feel badly for the victims and their families, but you reap what you sow.

Baloney!
Play that game with somebody else.
There's a world of difference between, "She had it coming", and, "You don't walk into a dark alley at 2 in the morning".
One is about provocation, the other is about showing good sense.
The Norwegians let the Muzzlims do as they please, let them run wild like a pack of animals because they're afraid of them. That kind of fear never engenders mercy, only more abuse. As I say, that's the lesson of history.
Roger I've made the run from Boca Raton to the Bahamas in a Contender a few times. I think it's only 50-60 miles to Bimini. In the summer it's pretty safe, even in smaller boats, just watch out for North winds! [in the gulf stream that heads North].
Madawaskan--if I may I disagree If with characterization of terrorists as irrational--I would suggest they are highly rational (not in the sense that you or I might characterize rationality)
If one defines rational behavior as employing means to reach a given end, then I submit they are quite rational--We let our value structures project on these sorts of miscreants
Fred4Pres wrote: Why do these Lutheran extremists do this sort of thing? I think it is too much Lutefisk in their diet.
Why indeed? There was an interesting comment to the NYT coverage of this latest outrage which I'd like to quote here if Ann will permit. It's by a NYT commenter called BR who gives his address as Times Square (who the hell lives at Times Square?)
Make no mistake, the defining conflict of the 21st Century is between religious fundamentalism and societies that respect and cherish civil liberties.
Notice I didn't say the conflict was between Islam and the West.
To frame the conflict as between Islam and the West is a degenerate trollish way to understand the conflict we are facing in today's world. As if the Muslim world can't appreciate civil liberties. As if the West doesn't have its own homegrown problems with religious fundamentalism.
Civil liberties or religious fundamentalism. Choose your side. Because there is no ability to remain neutral in this conflict, as this bombing has just shown.
BR has chosen to identify religious fundamentalism as the enemy and to denigrate the notion that the conflict is between Islam and the West as (sic) "a degenerate trollish way to understand the conflict". To my mind this a cowardly way to characterize this war. (And it is a war) BR can deplore the violence but he's given himself permission to ignore those who commit the violence in the name of a Bronze Age desert war god and his illiterate caravan-raiding prophet, and instead heap opprobrium on an unidentified "religious fundamentalist" foe, as if the next blast is as likely to originate in the kerosene lamp lit councils of an Amish colony as in an Al-Qaeda chatroom. Ten years ago BR's gut reaction to 9-11 was like to have been Bush! or CIA! Evidently BR and leftish people like him are making slow and painful towards the truth, but they haven't turned the crucial corner yet. And until they do the West will continue to loose this war.
Garage--did I fish? Oh yes--dolphin, yellow fin and black fin--also strangely caught two nice kingfish off elbow key
I grew up in Miami, and the best time to make the run from Miami to Bimini is in the summer months at night--two reasons--seas are usually calm, you can see squall lines easier at night, and can come into bimini on their lights--its approximately a 150 compass heading out of miami to bimini
My brother peace be unto him has a place on lubbers quarter cay and I am a regular visitor to the bahamas
There are two bahamas--abaco area is much more real--nassau has turned into the equivalent of new orleans--I love the bahamas
BR has chosen to identify religious fundamentalism as the enemy and to denigrate the notion that the conflict is between Islam and the West as (sic) "a degenerate trollish way to understand the conflict".
I'm surprised that a person like BR didn't name Bachmann, Palin or Romney. You know that's where they want to go.
Garage--from boca, it would be safer to head to West End in Abaco--its about 50 miles from Miami to Bimini--going from boca, or ft pierce or west palm your safer heading for abaco--once you hit grand bahama in you in shallow water and if your careful an easy trip in the lee of the cays all the way to Marsh Harbour or Hopetown--a bit longer but a lot less blue water
I get what you are saying but I don't like giving them the power in the causal relationship.
Let's see- if you put into this context-a parent beats the hell out of their kid.
In an abusive hateful fashion.
We aren't going to readily say what the kid did to trigger it.
In fact-the kid is "terrorized" because he can seldom predict what will trigger it.
We cannot tailor our behavior in hopes of controlling the actions of terrorists.
In that way they are irrational.
And then we could also go into their belief system which Liberals are more respectful of at times than when they talk about "religious" right wingers...
Titus said... When I was a little girl I used to go to the Carnival and always want to do the Carny Guys.
They were so rough and usually had their shirts unbuttoned and were smoking.
I would get so excited when I knew they were coming to town.
Carnivals.

You reveal too much. So what came first Titus? The desire for dirty carneymen or "first contact"? Can you tell or distinguish anymore? I will never let my kids go to a fair by themselves. Never. Carneymen are a dirty evil bunch.
Garage--my brother has his own place, but he lives next door to Paul and Robbie who provide lodging and guide service, and these guys are good--expensive but you get full lodging and two fishing trips a day
Lubbers quarter is halfway between Marsh Harbour and Hopetown--they will pick you up at Marsh Harbour
these guys are really good guides--professional and almost always produce--my favorite thing is fishing off my bros dock at night for snapper--also snorkeling off Sand key--a bahamian national park gorgeous reef--and hopetown has a 7 mile long beach with almost no one on it--(been there twice when they had the hooters girls calendar shoot--its a curse)
Garage--you got my email shoot me a note and I will put you in touch with Paul and Robbie--these guys are good--gonna cost you 3K depending how long you spend, but you wont be disappointed.
And, Garage, as an added bonus I can meet you there sometime next may and feed you to the tiger and bull sharks :) While the place is in shore the bull sharks now frequent it for free meals, and last year, paul hooked a 12 foor tiger--didnt believe him until he sent me the video--although I still snorkel off the dock--although I try not to splash much
Ahhhh--my ship has truly come in
nothing better than chumming sharks with liberals :)
He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days I had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and I went to another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made me sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty and I always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon and the sail that was furled around the mast. The sail was patched with what looked like a WSEU flag and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.

Roger, I'll send you an email, I've been dying to do some ocean fishing. Was going to go back down to FL and hang out with some friends, but my fishing buddy/boat owner George died. Not sure I can wait til May though! Sounds like a great place.
Chickenlittle-I am eagerly awaiting the time when cuba opens up for yankee fishing; the Isle of Pines will be a world class bonefishing location.
but also have to defend my friend Garage--we have our on line set to's on blog, but we also communicate "off blog." Disagree with his politics, but he's really a good dude--and now I get a chance to feed him to the sharks
Lem: I haven't been following the argument you seem to be having with Palladian but I don't see anything insulting per see by Palladian use of colorful language to talk about his detractors.. Its very common on the web.
Palladian claims he never plays the homophobe card. A simple search proved him a liar - first hit I checked:
Palladian: Palladian: Are you pussy men going to start pushing for separate neighborhoods for yourselves, where you don't have to live in fear that some faggot might be checking out your ass?
Garage--will await your email--best time for good blue water fishing is may-july--not many wahoo, but bill fish, dolphin and tuna--heres the key: fish the frigate birds--they are you natural fish finders. Paul and Robbie know that
Fen you have to realize that Palladian is a really great guy. I am sure you guys can find common ground. Just recently he has made a rapprochement with hdhouse.
I'm surprised you don't run into more wahoo. I knew a lure maker in Boca that that just slayed huge wahoo in the Bahamas, I think it was on the far east end. San Salvador? Ridiculous big seas I hear though.
I love fishing for wahoo. Lead bullet lures dragged fast with some squid arrays. Fun to catch and a white fish comparable in quality to halibut.
I also like sight casting for mahi with light gear. I usually use a baby octipus for bait. It is tough enough to survive several strikes until you get a hit. Then you bring the fish on board, unsnap the leader, and hook on a new one. You leave the first mahi on the line swimming near the boat to keep the school in (using other rods to catch the rest). You can usually nail half a dozen or so until they wise up and move off. Then you find them again and start over.
It is like coho salmon fishing, except it is usually in the eighties and you are in shorts.
Yet White House officials have privately told Hill Democrats that this is “the transformational moment” for Obama, and an agreement with Boehner and McConnell would send a clear signal that he is changing the way politics is done in Washington.
Palladian claims he never plays the homophobe card.
Actually, no. He claims very specifically not to have used the word homophobe to slur someone. And I believe him. Saying homophobe is boring, and Palladian has much more color in his text.

Of course, I'd hear about for the next week.
The sauce looks untapped.
I hope Meadehouse aren't libs who care about what they eat.
They should have had a quart of sauce w/ those fries.
I'm sure there's a pill that will solve any health issues related to a diet of fries drenched in sauce.
Don't be a lib!
A massive car bomb blast went off outside the PM's office in Oslo, Norge.
The Norwegians now qualify for their very own new Mosque across the street from the blast like lower Manhattan did.
Don't touch that plate, Ann! Someone has been eating from it already.
tradguy,
Is it just me, or is it lame for you (and Scott, in another thread) to immediately use this horrible devastation as a platform for cheap politicking?
Maybe you didn't put on your WWJD bracelet today.
I Yam what I eat.
Um, Ann, uh, your tuber is showing.

Poor sweet potatoes, given the bye,

Jack 'n' Jill's in LA serves 'em with a melted white cheddar topping. I'm surprised that's not the standard Wisconsin style.

This is just sad, Can someone put Norma Desmond in some facility to live out her final days? She is dribbling cobbler and mash potatoes all over her chin and shirt.

Healthier than white potato fries because they have a lower glycemic index, but not healthier than broccoli.

No, as I said, I feel badly for the victims and their families, but you reap what you sow.

I actually have a picture of 1 35 foot contender with four (count em 4) 250 yamahas on the stern--Saw it a white sound on elbow cay--these guys were the blue water equivalent of tournament bass guys-
Dont know what the torque physics of four huge outboards are on one transom, but the two outer were long shaft and the two inner were short shaft (Ok--that does sound a bit porno)--With gas at 6.00 a gallon in the bahamas as of May this baby left one hell of a carbon foot print and a deep gouge in the owners pocket

I thought that was funny.
I love going to fairs. I haven't gone in years but The Dane County Fair is this weekend and I just may go.
The rides, the lights, the games, the smells, the booths, the animals.
Yea, for fairs!

They can start learning any time.
When I was a little girl I used to go to the Carnival and always want to do the Carny Guys.
They were so rough and usually had their shirts unbuttoned and were smoking.
I would get so excited when I knew they were coming to town.
Carnivals.
Hi Titus..
See my comment @ 3:15
Isn't that a beautiful city Lem?
So much life and activity and such a sidewalk scene.
If all cities could be that active.
I bet if someone deep fried a pinched loaf and put it on a stick people would eat it.
I'm moving back there some day.
Terrorists are irrational.
If you could blame something-as in cause and effect-you could stop terrorism dead in it's tracks.
That's why it will be a never ending battle.
We can only hope to minimize or contain it.
It's the irrationality that makes it exponentially more effective.
*****
Seriously-
CNN just called Norway a logical target as I was typing this.
And there you have it-terrorism's greatest support-the free "publicists"-or propagandists.

I'll bet not.

Have the Norwegers released a motive for the "blond bomber" yet?
Kook? sympathizer? conspiracist?
chickenlittle
So far I'm hearing the "kook" theory.
Almost 20 years ago I was taking a class on terrorism and that was listed as one of it's near unbeatable properties.
Any individual kook could decide to essentially "sign-up" to the cause and be a "self-starter'.
Try planning and defending against that.
Roger
I've made the run from Boca Raton to the Bahamas in a Contender a few times. I think it's only 50-60 miles to Bimini. In the summer it's pretty safe, even in smaller boats, just watch out for North winds! [in the gulf stream that heads North].
Did you fish?
Madawaskan--if I may I disagree If with characterization of terrorists as irrational--I would suggest they are highly rational (not in the sense that you or I might characterize rationality)
If one defines rational behavior as employing means to reach a given end, then I submit they are quite rational--We let our value structures project on these sorts of miscreants

Why do these Lutheran extremists do this sort of thing?
Why do these Lutheran extremists do this sort of thing?
Maybe he wants the Vatican to end its illegal occupation of land that is the historical birthright of Romans.
Disgusting.
Roger
I get what you are saying but I don't like giving them the power in the causal relationship.
Let's see- if you put into this context-a parent beats the hell out of their kid.
In an abusive hateful fashion.
We aren't going to readily say what the kid did to trigger it.
In fact-the kid is "terrorized" because he can seldom predict what will trigger it.
We cannot tailor our behavior in hopes of controlling the actions of terrorists.
In that way they are irrational.
And then we could also go into their belief system which Liberals are more respectful of at times than when they talk about "religious" right wingers...
Roger
I forgot you grew up in Miami. One thing I do miss about FL is the fishing. Used to go at least 3-4 times a week.
So tell me about this place in Lubbers Cay? :)

You reveal too much. So what came first Titus? The desire for dirty carneymen or "first contact"? Can you tell or distinguish anymore? I will never let my kids go to a fair by themselves. Never. Carneymen are a dirty evil bunch.
I declare shenangins!

Man I can almost taste that grilled wahoo already. Shit!
Chickenlittle-I am eagerly awaiting the time when cuba opens up for yankee fishing; the Isle of Pines will be a world class bonefishing location.
but also have to defend my friend
Garage--we have our on line set to's on blog, but we also communicate "off blog." Disagree with his politics, but he's really a good dude--and now I get a chance to feed him to the sharks
life is good
Lem: I haven't been following the argument you seem to be having with Palladian but I don't see anything insulting per see by Palladian use of colorful language to talk about his detractors..
Paul and Robbie know that
apologize to the commentariat for hijacking, but fishing is just too important
Not to mention the opening of a SCUBA CUBA resort!
President Golfsalot if pitching a tantrum on my teevee.
Fen you have to realize that Palladian is a really great guy. I am sure you guys can find common ground. Just recently he has made a rapprochement with hdhouse.
I bet you guys can do the same.
I mean I know you like gladiator movies.
I think Ann approves short wearing while fishing.
You can usually nail half a dozen or so until they wise up and move off.
If you can get the bull out of the way you can usually nail the entire school. Yum.
from Politico:
Yet White House officials have privately told Hill Democrats that this is “the transformational moment” for Obama, and an agreement with Boehner and McConnell would send a clear signal that he is changing the way politics is done in Washington.
PUHHHLLLEEEEESSSS!
Palladian claims he never plays the homophobe card.
Actually, no. He claims very specifically not to have used the word homophobe to slur someone. And I believe him. Saying homophobe is boring, and Palladian has much more color in his text.
You could take a lesson.
