I have a home on the 4th clearest lake in WI. No gas motors allowed and property owners that don't use fertilizers on lawns or plants. In the spring you can see the Secchi disk at 30'.
Roger Neill, on some Los Angeles TV show, suggests that Casey Anthony's best move now is go to on Dancing with the Stars. She'd get huge ratings. They'd jump at the chance.
Lake Mendota's water quality has been poor since I can remember (early 1960's). It's called eutrophication. The lake isn't actually a lake but rather part of an ancient river system (the Yahara) which drains into the Rock River which then makes its way to the Mississippi. Lake Mendota is really part of a chain of backed-up drainage of fertile farmland.
My dad pretty much shunned diving there in the 60s except in the winter under ice when the algae bloom died out (I did do my open-water certification there in 1975). Instead he dove at local rock quarries (Verona and Redgranite to name a few). Even Devil's Lake began to deteriorate in the mid 1970s. I believe it recovered somewhat but probably not to point of early 1960's. Looking back, I think this contributed to my sympathies with the environmental movement at the time.
Our town outlaws the sale of bottle rockets. (You can buy them in any of the neighboring towns.) The sale of rockets, mortars, and other various, more dangerous fireworks is lawful. Go figure.
It's hot, mebbe 80, and still. Crickets, lightning bugs, and the occasional siren in the distance.
Sitting in front of a fan, drinking a Stella Artois, reading the folks at Althouse, and thankful my bride's second carotid dissection appears to be the end of The Very Curious Medical Malady.
I bitch too much and give thanks too little. But not tonight, cause my girl is walkin and talkin and pain free. And Saturday we go to the Antique Roadshow, which made her so excited she squealed repeatedly, a feat I never myself accomplished.
God is good, and for a brief moment, the heavens are alright.
There is an ephemeral pond next to a dry wash near our house that fills occasionally if the summer monsoon is a good one. Then, if the timing is right, desert spadefoot toads emerge by the thousands from the newly wet mud, where they have been estivating for nearly a year, and proceed to croak in unison, harmony, and with a nearly incomprehensible level of noise. If the wind isn't blowing, you can see the surface ripples created by the sound progressing across the pond in a harmonic fashion.
The pond gets to be about 5 acres during a good monsoon, and maybe 10 feet deep, but by late fall it is dry again, and those toads have long since buried themselves in the mud, which will soon enough become dried adobe brick. Interesting to think that those toads will live in those bricks until next summer's rains.
The message isn't "tax me" because I'm patriotic, it's tax everyone, because I won't put my money where my mouth is by just giving it to the government on my own.
There is a line on your tax forms where you can choose to give extra money to the government. Either the "patriots" have put a very large figure in that line each year or they're full of hooey. I know what my guess is. :)
On a related note, "millionaire" is not a tax bracket. We tax income, not wealth. My parents are far wealthier than I am but often less in taxes because their income is less than mine.
Does it have a "fixed" wide angle lens? Does it chew threw batteries?
I went to Amazon to look. And, it seems to be a major complaint. That the Duracell's need to be replaced within 50 shots.
And, I guess you really need to take it out frequently, no less. Or by the time you'd reach for the camera, the batteries would be dead, anyway?
At least the Canon is not the "fish eye" of old ... where everything from the center is distorted out. And, the image is inside a round circle.
I'm sure, at first, learning to blog was a big deal. Now, however, the camera has added so much! (I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Newspapers discovered they needed to add pictures to Page One.)
But when you blog ... you're figuring out the whole business, step by step, on your own. WOW!
Did you succeed in finding what a "Stella Artois" is? I am hearing that term for the first time so I may just be off to google it. and yeah do not croak Lol

Many good lines in there, including "I love our coutnry more than my money."
I guess it runs the other way for a lot of conservatives.
Sure.
That's why so many Conservatives put their lives on the line in the military for less-than-wonderful pay.
PS For those who didn't follow the link, the video is produced by the Agenda Project - the same people who made the video showing Paul Ryan throwing Grandma off a cliff.

Water falling from the sky?
Yuck.

And her I thought I was going to witness the Professor catching a bullfrog with her bare hands.

Glenn Reynolds says he's jealous of the lens on your camera. So, I'm guessing it's a Fish Eye?
What overwhelms me here is the SOUNDS of rain! Makes the picture enchanting.
You should provide a link to Amazon, so we can buy a camera just like the one you are using.
They've been threatening us with that rain since the beginning of the week.

That would be something to see, Ann running into the water in a pair of clam diggers or pedal pushers or (dare I say it?) shorts.
PS What is her position on women in shorts, anyway?

Some 19 year got attacked by an artillery shell firework in the town next door to me on the 4th. What is WRONG with people?
You need a flock of white swans.
I'm glad that we're not seeing pictures of the nuttiness at the capitol any more on the blog. Much more interesting stuff.
I would like to take this opportunity and talk about the nectarine. I just had one. Man, was that good.
Has anyone else noticed how sweet oranges are this year? More better than last year.
Please, don't croak.
For the annals of strange laws:
Our town outlaws the sale of bottle rockets. (You can buy them in any of the neighboring towns.) The sale of rockets, mortars, and other various, more dangerous fireworks is lawful. Go figure.
AllanS, thanks for the tip I'll be investigating.
Allen, I'll have to buy oranges now. I haven't had any this year because they were so bad last year.
I'm going outside to take a quick swim. I love swimming at night.
This video is one of the happiest things I've ever seen. Watch to the end - it's pure joy.

Mass murder in Grand Rapids, MI.
Shootings at two locations and free-way car chase with several uninvolved people injured, leading to a standoff in a house in north Grand Rapids.
Boy, that was brief.
Too brief, Pogo, but that's great about your wife. Hold her close. On that note, I've got my own to attend to..
Pogo,
I just Googled carotid dissection. Wow, I'm glad everything is ok.
Now, I have to find out what a Stella Artois is.
It's a beer my son drinks. So-so. I prefer a Guinness, but they're gone. Actually prefer red wine, but damn, it's hot!

Have a beer, Alpha, and shut yer political yap a spell.
You can smear and lie and twist all you want tomorrow.
It's Miller time.
Or is it Hammer time?
Can't touch this.

Wow. I took your link, and am sending it to my son. His high school music teacher must see this one!
I'll bet the kid's day leads a symphonic orchestra somewhere. But I'd pay money to see this kid at the Hollywood Bowl!
Thanks for the link.

Good news Pogo. Happy for you and Mrs. Pogo. Enjoy the Roadshow.
MadisonMan -- how is your mother doing? And you and the rest of your family?
Thought about you a couple times this week.
wv storm
Not tonight.
Out of the primordial slime arose...Madison?
Pogo,
I don't know about all the God talk, but I am very, very happy for you!!!!
Damn, that's good news!
Allen,

It's over: the Democrats are finished.
Self-inflicted shot to the head.
But we've still got to finish the job,...

If that were true, Pelosi and the other Dem millionaires in congress would resign.
The class warfare is stupid. The Democrat party has become the party of the rich.
Hey garage, one of your homies is going to jail...
@pogo
Happy to hear your good news.
It is good to give thanks and offer praise.
Those that don't 'get it', don't get it.
Having a mental Stella with you now.
Cheers.
wv - chopin. Very nice.
Thanks to all for the well wishes.
I do indeed have much to be grateful for; too often I don't see it at all.
The bride is bringing a 160 year old quilt to the Roadshow. It ain't worth nothin, sure, but she's thrilled.
I got a ticket but nothing to ask about. The only thing I seem to have collected is books no one else wants to read.
The Supreme Court has bitch-slapped the Constitutional Law Professor In Chief.

I guess he'll have to invoke a Presidential pardon then in order to appease the Mexican government.
Watch him do it too. That oughta play well for him...not!
