This is why it was the right decision to vote for Paul Soglin for mayor.

He's actually using his brain to make real decisions. Not bullshit gestures to pander to Madisonians... like Mayor Dave.

In 2006, feminist writer and activist Jessica Valenti was subject to a barrage of online harassment after blogger Ann Althouse accused her of making goo-goo eyes at former President Clinton, based on the evidence that Valenti wore a blue sweater and stood near Clinton in a group shot of a blogger lunch he hosted.

Will Althouse demand an apology?

I remember all my life
Raining down as cold as ice
A shadow of a man
A face through a window
Crying in the night
The night goes into

Morning, just another day
Happy people pass my way
Looking in their eyes
I see a memory
I never realized
you made me so happy, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
but I sent you away, oh Mandy
well you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
I need you today, oh Mandy

I'm standing on the edge of time
I Walked away when love was mine
Caught up in a world of uphill climbing
The tears are in my mind
And nothing is rhyming, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
but I sent you away, oh Mandy
well you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

Yesterday's a dream I face the morning
Crying on the breeze
the pain is calling, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
but I sent you away, oh Mandy
well you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

If Hummus Abedin were awake she would say that was sexist.

I'm trying to decide if the post was sarcastic.

Trooper? Hummus? Where does she keep it?

I like veggies. You need them for a really good bloody mary.

"Explore neighborhoods." My guess is that this will be the richer folk, who "get explored."

When we have the Rose Parade down Colorado Blvd, from Orange Grove. In Pasadena. Streets get pretty choked. But you're dealing with the New Year's weekend. A time when local businesses are shut. And, ALL the side streets are impacted.

If you live on one of those side streets, you pull your cars out of the garage and driveway. And, park on the street. (But the cars are bumper to bumper.) If you had an emergency, you can't really drive out. And, go anywhere.

So, there will be "inconvenience."

Bet the neighbors in the neighorhoods aren't going to be too thrilled.

While up on Orange Grove, where the parade's floats, and bands. And, horses. All have assigned spots. The neighbors stay up all night. And, there's a party spirit.

Activities start around 4AM. If it's cold out, the kids in the bands are given large black garbage bags, to open. In order to cover themselves up, and get some warmth.

Well, at least it looks like more people turn out to pedal along, than anything the unions saw showing up when they took on the Capitol Building.

Too bad there isn't a park in Madison to use. Parks are the best gathering spots.

Pasadena, on the other hand, makes her money on all the tourists who come to see the Rose Parade.

Old & Tired. What a shame. Some of my fondest memories are feeding the ducks at Lake Mendota with my girlfriend. Now, I'm old & tired too. Sometimes a little too drunk. LOL.

At least we never had to see the "How Cieslewicz Lost Me" Post.

Crumudgeons unite!
Anyway, I agree, it's a good idea to move it around the city. You could even add Middleton, Fitchburg and Monona...around Lake Monona. Getting 50k out exercising and spending a little dough isn't such a bad thing.

Geesh, but his hero is Fidel Castro. Wonder if David Duke would make a good mayor.

For next year, Soglin said he supports two events — one Downtown with a route that would have less of an impact on businesses and another that would give people a chance to explore neighborhoods.

Jeez Louise, do Madison bicycle riders make an exception for these bike events and actually ride on the road?

Last thing I want in my neighborhood is a sweaty peloton on the sidewalks (or anywhere else for that matter.)

They should do a Ride the Drive on the Beltline. From John Nolen Drive to Midvale.

"...East Washington Avenue from Paterson Street to Pinckney Street,"

Do these clowns know Williamson St is also closed?

Lava said...

Sure they know Williamson is closed but don't care. That's the point, actually. To make people who use cars as inconvenienced as possible.

I live on the East Side and if I wanted to come downtown on Sunday (which I don't) I could take E. Washington to Gorham (a minor pain) or get on the god-forsaken Beltline and work the woodwork till I got Park Street (larger pain).

The constant carping between bikes and cars is just plain silly and needs to go away. We can have both...so let's get over it.

Anyone seen those "Share the Road" signs? I'll share the road with bikes when they start obeying traffic laws (including stop signs). Until then, no dice.

Personally, instead of "Ride the Drive," I'm hoping for a "Cars Only" day when all the bikers and pedestrians have to stay the hell off the roads.

Actually, Ann, I think a more apt interpretation may be that Mayor-for-life Paul Soglin is, as he ages, gradually losing his Super Ego -- that internalized parent that monitors our primal urges and censors us before we blurt out, inappropriately, our gut-level reactions to things we see in the world around us. He reminds me of several of my older male relatives, who became increasingly prone to making outrageous, provocative statements. The crash-and-burn comments about the Overture Center are, I think, emblematic: no matter what you may think about the OC and its likely denourment, saying what Soglin said in public was indefensible. He is turning out to be just one more crotchety old man, like the codger who used to stand out on his lawn near where I few up and shake his fist at the kids who dared to run across his lawn. "Stupid kids!"
