Kirsten Powers on Anthony Weiner: "This is not about sex. It’s about dominating and inflicting physical pain on a woman."

Powers, who dated him a decade ago, and defended him last week, is now calling on him to resign:
By far the most disturbing information that we have been privy to—there is, no doubt, more out there that we don’t know—is the transcript of a nine-month "sexting" relationship Weiner had with a Las Vegas blackjack dealer. Radar Online posted the transcript, and it is rife with misogyny and distorted views about women. In referring to oral sex, Wiener tells her, “You will gag on me before you c** with me in you” and “[I’m] thinking about gagging your hot mouth with my c***.” This is not about sex. It’s about dominating and inflicting physical pain on a woman, a fantasy the hard-corn porn industry makes billions of dollars on selling to men. You don’t want to gag a woman with your penis unless you have some serious issues with the way you see women.
Hard-corn porn? Hilarious typos aside... let's not go all Women's Studies about the man's efforts at writing about sex. It is not an easy literary task.

Okay. I just went and read the entire Weiner/Weiss transcript. (PDF.)  Read it out loud, in fact! A few thoughts:

1. This is my favorite exchange. (Boldface is Weiner.)
are you as passionate in the sack as u are about politics? I'm getting bored of my f*** friend

baby you'd be crawling for the door to prevent me from f***ing you silly

nice, just what I'm looking for. I want to bang the future mayor of nyc!

making me h**d
It's the idea of getting to be mayor that really excites him.

2. I don't think it's "rife with misogyny and distorted views about women," as Powers put it. The quotes she extracts follow an approach to texting that the 2 have established in which they get each other going with blunt sex talk.
aahh...wish I was in the shower with you to help

you give good h**d?

i've been told really good...I love doing it

wow a jewish girl who sucks c***! this thing is ready to do damage

and swallows every drop. god damn how do I get you here to f*** me?

<= thinking about gagging your hot mouth with my c***

the anticipation of f****** you is driving me crazy! come to vegas so I can suck your c*** for an hour. you must be in the shower...i am getting very nice visual before bed. I'll probably have some filthy dreams about you (again!)"
It goes on like that. He's not saying anything she doesn't welcome. You can easily see that in context. Powers says "This is not about sex." But it obviously is.

3. Based on the entire transcript, I would say that the only problem with his attitude toward Weiss is not "misogyny," but the way he maintains a minimal contact with her over the course of nearly a year, when she keeps begging him to come to Vegas and to "f*** the s***" out of her. I think he knows there's no way he's traveling out there for her, yet she might imagine that he will. It would be decent to tell her that, but, really, she seems like a strong person who knows what she is doing, getting a thrill out of playful intimacy with a celebrity she admires.

4. I have no idea whether Huma Abedin objects to his fooling around like this. For all we know, she reads these written dialogues aloud to him and the 2 of them laugh about it. We do not know.

We have some responsibility for what we say, and for what we allow our eyes to see. Since I don't want to scratch my eyes out, I'm not reading the transcript. I just want to know how any member of Congress can continue to support this man? Don't wait for him to resign, that is too honorable. Banish him, and deprive him the Privilege of the Floor.

But Ann. Didn't our democratic friends firmly establish in 1998 that lying about sex and having people cover it up is not a resign-able offense, even if you have a sex act in the oval office with a 21 year old that you have power over?

If the left could use the Weiner case to their advantage, as they thought they could with Bill Clinton they would not be saying a word.

windbag said...

If a person’s judgement of girl/boyfriends is so faulty, unreliable, imperfect, non-psychic…whatever…that they enter into a relationship only to discover later that the person was completely different than their experience and perception led them to believe that girl/boyfriend was, how can their recommendations for politicians be trusted?

Not to pick on KP, but any pundit is in this same boat. We know our closest friends and family at a distance. Probably not much closer than our most casual acquaintances, truth be told. We vote for people, putting the course of our country into the hands of people who may turn out to be the most heinous of villains tomorrow.

I recall how excited people were over Alan Keyes a few years back. Given a few months of scrutiny, however, and he turned out to be not the top-shelf candidate many hoped and thought he was. KP is a smart woman; Weiner misled her, bypassing her intelligence, street smarts, and whatever other filter systems she has in place to distance herself from losers and heartache.

How many of us cheered The Newt of the ’90s, only to be repulsed by his personal character and public implosion here in 2011? If nothing else, this whole Weiner business can serve as a warning against how effusively we support any candidate.

Sex is sexist. What Weiner did as a man is not so wrong. What Weiner did as a Congressman is bizarrely wrong....I read the tweets with the card dealer that were printed in the paper. They were kind of funny. It does seem like they were tweets in contemplation of congress. At any rate, it is stupid beyond the normal range of stupid to entrust your career and reputation to the continued good will of a Vegas card dealer and a porn star....We all try to alleviate the angst of existence as best we can. The pursuit of a high minded public life is one way. The pursuit of nookie is another. Sadly these two paths do not complement each other and, in fact, clash. You can stand up for the little man but not by having your little man stand up for pornstars....My own way of dealing with the pain of existence is to sleep late and eat a lot of bbq. These two goals have never put my life in conflict.

As to masturbation, I don't think Kirsten Powers is being honest.

That Breitbart dropped the weiner picture by handing his iPhone to Opie ... creates a news market all its own.

Even if Huma isn't preggy ... she can walk around with a pillow under her clothes for months and months.

And, she's in the hands of Hillary. Who knows how to market "stand by your man" like nobody's business.

What if Anthony's career is no longer salvageable? Well, then, a short shelf life, ahead, no?

Yes, you most certainly do have an idea, Ann, because Anthony Weiner said so in his press conference yesterday. You watched that press conference, did you not counselor?

He admitted that he did not inform his innocent wife of any of this until yesterday morning ... just hours before his press conference.

Don't go all Chris Matthews on us and make out like it's her fault. That's misogynistic uncalled for.

I don't know why Ms Powers feels a need to dissect sex talk. IME it all sounds pretty silly to the people not involved.

Basically, not buying what the-ex is selling. She wants her 15 minutes, it seems to me.

It's a shame what this woman is being made to put up with by the person she is supposed to be able to get the most support from - her spouse.

And to top it all off he's been doing this knowing she is carrying his child.

I think it's nice that text messaging is a perfect medium for dirty talk. You have a 140 character limit and if you exceed that limit you know you're not doing it right. It means you're being too verbose and complicated, or not letting your partner have their turn. Even the "baby you'd be crawling for the door" line comes close to being excessively wordy. We know why she'd be crawling for the door, so just leave out the "to prevent me from f***ing you silly" bit.

Which reminds me of this piece on why texting never took off for the Victorians. Quite funny.

If I read her correctly, Professor Althouse thinks that a marriage is nothing more than what the two parties consenting to it make it. Those parties may consent to any rules or no rules. No one else has the right to judge whether those rules are reasonable. And, presumably, the law would allow such a thing to. Interesting. My guess is were one to see a whole society that thinks of marriage that it, it would not be a society that would last terribly long. Family life would be too chaotic. It would be an interestin experiment, however. Perhaps my instinct is wrong, and it can work.

rhhardin said...

On the other hand, there would be lots more joke material.

windbag said...

If I read her correctly, Professor Althouse thinks that a marriage is nothing more than what the two parties consenting to it make it.

Don't know whether Althouse is promoting that or not, but herein lies the problem of the left. Libs have been defending Weiner's decision not to resign on the claim that he didn't campaign on family values, so he's not a hypocrite. But, he is a hypocrite.

Taking liberties with a little bit of presumption, I'd guess that their marriage vows/statements/assertions/hippie poetry stated something along the lines of marital fidelity, respect, or promotion of the communal good for the harmony of the home. By living the lie of a faithful family man while cheating on his wife makes him a liar and a hypocrite. He was pretending to be one thing, while acting just the opposite.

If, at the onset, he had said, "Our marriage is an open marriage, with no expectation of monogamy and no judgement of extra-marital relations, so butt out of our private business," then fine, do as you please. He didn't. He's embarrassed because he (apparently) broke whatever vows he took.

Cad.

Andrew Klavan was right when he said Weiner looked exactly like a turtle without his shell. And we've had that "sex is all in the mind" debate here, so I'm not surprised by any of this - Weenie is telling women what they want to hear. But here's the thing:

Look at what giving women what they want gets you.

Now, my life is a prime example of what NOT giving women what they want will get you - nothing. Well, not quite:

A photo of an old girlfriend was on Facebook the other day, and she looked pretty, so I indicated that I "liked" it, and - BAM! - my cell phone rang.

I thought, "Good Lord, I don't need this shit," but answered it anyway, and - within seconds - I knew I'd made two mistakes. The word "spiritual" came out of her mouth before a minute was up, as a self-description (remember: a lot of my friends haven't seen me in years and don't know about the blog) and, from then on, I was left rolling my eyes as she went on and on about a bunch of bullshit that, ordinarily, I would run from like the plague.

This girl used to be a fucking hooker, for Christ's sake.

She wanted to know when I'd be in town. I won't be in town. (Hell, I've got to get off the phone.) "Bye."

My point is, being a guy with his own perspective is probably the most isolating thing a man can be. When I was with my wife, and had my career, it was different. But now, shit, women really are "the other" and I wonder if I'll ever have anything with one again.

I can flirt like nobody's business, and women seem to like me, but I'll never be Anthony Weiner.

"The most tragic aspect of the Anthony Weiner story is that his fall comes directly from entree into a circle which he imagined it was an honor to join.
