"The helium balloon, which has somehow stayed inflated for more than four months after being released by protesters, has become a symbol of sorts."

"It now has its own 'Capitol Balloon' Facebook page and 'The Heart Balloon' Twitter account. The balloon even has caught the eye of the Wisconsin Historical Society, which has been gathering artifacts to chronicle Gov. Scott Walker's plan to dramatically limit collective bargaining for public workers and the ensuing explosion of protests."

Protest kitsch.

Mylar balloons don't loose their helium. As long as there are no microscopic breaks in the seams or seal, they'll stay up. I had one from Halloween in pictures from Christmas before I finally disposed of it.

Latex balloons are porous. (Which makes a person wonder what else made from latex is porous...)

Yes, it's litter. Expensive to remove litter. And the maudlin lefties imagine a miracle.

I agree with the headline on this story:

Long-lasting heart-shaped balloon in Capitol is 'symbol of our fight' for protest movement

It's a gaseous red mass that overstayed its welcome.

As it deflates there will be seen the face of Gaia.

Imagine if someone did bring it down with a BB gun.

Oh the humanity!

There would be gnashing of teeth, and crying, oh my god yes, lots of crying. Followed by an demand for the banning of BB guns and anything sharp.

Maybe, it's just me, but I see a penis captured inside that red balloon.

Plus, who knows? Maybe, somebody stuck a piece of double-sided sticky tape to the upper portion of the balloon?

Why hasn't the cleaning staff, inside the rotunda, dealt with this? Don't they look up?

Do they leave dust bunnies there, too? Spider webs?

The people who worship the balloon are likely the same people who have outlawed plastic bags across the land.

The balloon has a facebook page.

"I think the Capitol balloon symbolizes the feelings of solidarity that Wisconsinites are feeling, and the love for our Capitol," frequent protester Nicole Desautels Schulte said, looking up at the balloon. "It's something that is not going to give up. The balloon is a symbol of our fight."

Man, that is so fucking deep.

I wish the Wisconsin Historical society would have shown the same verve about chronicalling Democrat Governor Jim Doyle's illegal raiding of the patient compensation fund that was set up to compensate victims of medical malpractice.

After having some security concerns over the use of hydrogen to fill the balloons, the inflated helium balloons came into the fore.
The helium gas is much safer to use and has one-tenth the lifting power of the hydrogen gas.
