"Unpopular Freshman GOP Governors Could Help Obama’s Reelection Bid."

Says TPM.

When Daddy is too scary, we run to Mommy.

Fickle folks.

Sadly, Mommy doesn't understand the fundamental principles of economics and her policies always lead to fiscal disaster. Just ask Spain, where everybody lives at home with Mommy.

Yup. Mommy will tell us that money really does grow on trees, and the whole problem with the economy that she inherited from that evil George Bush is that the rich won't share their money trees with the poor people who don't have any money trees.

GOP governors need to explain why they are doing what they are doing and be consistent. Like good dads. Something, unfortunately, Barack Obama was deprived of.

That was a short honeymoon wasn't it. There is only one group of people the GOP isn't implicitly at war with, so the only surprise was how fast it happened.

The 'story' is based upon poll 'results'. BFD.

The only poll that matters will occur in 2012.

TPM = Talking Points Memo.

You know, if you were curious.

Also, it's May 2011.

WV: Halin. Whatever.

Their analysis looks very weak. They take three states and assert that falling numbers for the GOP governors are mirrored by rising numberts for O'bama.

Yet NONE of the three articles (also by TPM, you'd think they ought to read their own drivel) that they link to for support even mention O'bama and the polls linked from the second tier articles dont mention O'bama either.

chickelit said...

Not even going to read the TPM link.

Those guys love and embrace the Mommy-state. There's a reason for that too.

Garage is right. Enacting economic restraints needed on unlimited government free rides finds the same NIMBY reaction that a landfill or Nuclear Plant produce. Sure we need it, but I am so powerful that I can stop it anyway. That is another reason we need a Palin explaining wealth and jobs and not a Romney agreeing with every NIMBY he talks to. How is that ethanol subsidy working out in the food prices all over the world?

Here, are numbers, Mr. Drill.

Both Obama and the governors' policies could be very unpopular in 2012. A smart governor would say that I have to institute these tough policies because Obama is ruining the country with his economic policies and Obamacare. I have to cut Medicaid because Obamacare is going to force us to expand Medicaid to cover even more people. I'll also have to raise taxes to pay for Obama's policies.

If Obama can blame W. for everything, then these governors can blame Obama.

I think sheer stupidity will help more and that's more common than unpopular Republican governors.

Automatic_Wing said...

Where's America's Politico when you need him? Only he can make sense of this craziness.

By 2012 the furor will have died down, but the public sector unions will remain weakened. And they are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic party.

cubanbob said...

These governors apparently are only unpopular with those who live off the taxpayers. As a Floridian, I really don't give a crap that teachers didn't get a 3% COLA. Or a cut in medicaid. Or a cut in funding local PBS stations. The governor is doing exactly what he said he would do during the campaign. As a taxpayer, whats not too like? Better to cut them than raise my taxes.

There's a difference between voters (such as those registered by ACORN and SEIU) and likely voters. This is also TPM and Politico talking.

It's also about 16 months to the election and the economy is going nowhere but down. What things look like now may have no relation to what they look like then.

That's so stupid, and unfortunately, predictable. This monolithic GOP is at war with Israelis, and Libyans (oops, that would be Obama, scratch that).

Garage, bring the funny. Bitter and stupid won't win friends and influence people.

The reason that this is humorous is that most often, coat tails go the other way - top down. WTF (Winning the Future) would someone vote for President Obama because they didn't like the performance of a Republican governor who likely isn't even on the ballot?

My guess is that this is, not surprisingly, pure spin, in an attempt to bolster President Obama's reelection chances.

I remember George Herbert Walker Bush's second term so fondly. It's too bad George W didn't have his Dad's common touch.

10 states flipped to GOP Governors in 2010. Current party affiliation is 29 GOP, 20 Dem, 1 Independent. Asking which GOP Governor is the least favorite is like asking school kids which is their least favorite flavor of ice cream.

And when Mommy is too scary, we become Bill Clinton.

This is called shooting the messenger, and it's almost inevitable. There are many tough decisions that must be made because of decades of profligacy, by left and right. But the voters don't really like the message, and nice warm manipulative mommy is telling them that mean old daddy is probably going to molest them at any moment.

Stories like this usually don't end well for the children (in this case the voters), and this is probably no exception to that rule.

We probably are going to deny ourselves into a major league world crisis over this, and mommy will still be blaming daddy. The world being what it is, she may get away with it.

Even if the GOP governors are unpopular, there is some serious branding going on here. What matters, in the end, is not what policies get enacted in the next four years, but what policies get enacted over the long run.
And eventually, not matter what, the American people will learn that all bills have to be paid, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Maybe not now, but they will eventually. And by then, Republicans will have successfully been branded as the serious ones.

TPM is unreliable in such things as facts. It is true that polls are showing some decline in support. What is important is whether these measures work. If the states are in better shape next year, or at least in better shape than the blue states, the support will recover. Reagan had poor poll number two years into his term but got 49 states two years later.

You're a joke, Ann.

She knows, but one has to keep her lemming flock happy since she regrettably, or so she expounds/portrays daily, voted for mommy!

Indeed our blog mistress voted for mommy!

It's an AA catch-22 ie the more she "tries" to denigrate Obama, the more she looks like a complete imbecile re: her supposed 2008 vote.

Quite the dilemma ...

It really is pretty hilarious how many democrats pop in these threads to just blurt out some completely pointless insult.

Some go to great lengths to make it nasty. Some just want to announce how bad Althouse is. None of them have a shred of hope they can persuade anyone.

How is that not hilarious?

I think it's been established that the hard left is utterly intolerant of Althouse's POV, and that the right has a mixed but more tolerant reaction (despite her voting for Obama).

Don't just be a liberal. BE a liberal, and value ideas you don't agree with. Some of you guys make Sarah Palin look like John Stuart Mill.

How funny is this!! The scary GOP Governors will send Garage to the polls voting for Democrats. TPM logic at its finest.

Thanks for the trite analogy.

Really, it makes me glad to know that a tenured law professor at a state university understand the values of fiscal austerity when applied to other people.
