"This is sounding very much like a Gary Hart 'Monkey Business' moment..."

Follow me around!

(Click through if you want to understand the context. I'm just putting up a highlight for the folks who bellyache about having to watch a whole, long "Boringheads." The fact is, this one isn't boring, but you won't know that unless you watch it. Remember, what Gary Hart said was "follow me around... it will be boring.")

I find politician's sexual exploits really boring.

I find people that don't have any power sexual exploits much more interesting though.

I am thinking of Pogo today. I have had little or minimal interaction with him on this site but I can't get him out of my mind.

Weird, I don't really know any of you people but I am saddened when something bad like an illness impacts someone here.

It's odd that we come here and post our hardships and pour out our guts here to a bunch of strangers.

What I remember, far more than the actual scandal, was Bloom County getting endless mileage out of it. Far more entertaining.

AA, did you know there's been some discussion of late whether the rule should be relaxed on where periods go when quotation marks are used? Apparently the internet generation is putting it outside and that's just peachy with some folks.

Is Pogo okay? Sorry for being ot, but I missed that if it is true.

As far as DSK, if the guy did what he is accused of, it is certainly not a Gary Hart moment. Gary Hart's incident was just plain old infidelity and hypocrisy.

If DSK sexually assaulted this women, it is a crime--a very serious one. And reports from both the hotel and the police are the accuser is very credible. Unfortunately these things boil down to he said/she said, weighing credibility, with of course DNA and other evidence coming into play.

I want him to have a fair trial. And while being pillared in the media is not helping him, it is unavoidable given the circumstances.

I am glad Ann is narrowing down the blogging head clips. I know sound bite clips have their own problems, but most blogging head clips (in general) are waaaay too long.

AllenS said...

They're way too long for me too. If it was just The Althouse Woman giving us instructions, I could handle that, but these other extremely boring people, just don't cut it.

Sal said...

It starts out dull (I thought: if only there wasn't so much talking). It gets better though.

I didn't read the FAQ. Do the participants appear on the left or right according to their relative politics? Ann is right of Bob Wright but left of Matt Welch.

I watched the whole bloggingheads

So these aren't supposed to be a "point/counter-point" sort of thing. I mean the Professor and Mr. Welch were generally sympatico.

It does seem that Madison sensibilities have blunted Prof Althouse's libertarian tendencies. The whole Google discussion smacks of these large and evil corporations need to be controlled

Key statement from the Professor:

"We GIVE to these people..."

Yes, this free market stuff is messy but you get what you pay for!

chickelit said...

What'd be funny would be some secret flip-cam video of Althouse watching herself on Bloggingheads a la bin Laden.

Meade would never do that though.

I think there's a time limit on how long you can listen to one person make a point or tell a story without some interplay. They probably teach TV news people that because they're always interrupting their guests.

Except for David Gregory on Meet the Press. He just repeats what he hears in his earpiece.

Hagar said...

Off topic.

If the Feds are planning to issue alarms/warnings on our cell phones/iPads/whatever, can they mandate that each of us possess and carry one of these devices?

Yes, but it's going to have to conform to the jack they're going to install at the base of the neck. All cell manufacturers that don't conform by the wayside and go out of business because the FCC is gradually going to faze out their frequencies to a neck-jack only format.

Hagar said...

I am serious.

If they can mandate that we purchase medical insurance on their terms, why can't they mandate devices to receive citizen alerts?

It would also be in the interest of the "general welfare," no?

Scott M said...

It would also be in the interest of the "general welfare," no?

Not to mention that if you wanted NOT to buy one, you would be driving up the costs for everyone else and thus affecting interstate commerce.

deborah said...

Hagar, would it be a funded or unfunded mandate? So many people carry them already, and those who don't are those who mostly can't afford them.

coketown said...

The first five minutes of any bloggingheads is the two heads BSing about the weather and the condition of the roads. Come on you morons! Get the uninteresting chit-chat done first, THEN start recording! Nobody cares how cold/humid/wet/violent it's been in DC these last couple days.

And I like the length of most bloggingheads. The only ones I can't suffer through is when two lefties or two righties spend the whole time agreeing. The absolute worst was the Farley/whoever one a couple days ago, where without ANY provocation they both went on a tangent about how the Republican party is basically the party of scared white people--and, hmm, maybe that's what informs their politics? Bitterness and insecurity about their whiteness? It was sickening. Almost as sickening as those stupid hats Robert Baldey wears indoors. What a douchebag.

Scott M said...

I'm a scared white person, but I'm mostly only afraid of carnies...mostly.

coketown said...

But when it comes to balding Bloggingheads contributors, the viewer is forced the whole time to either look at a silly hat or watch the contributor pull their hair forward. There's a fair few who do that.

Hmm...and the press secretary's name is Jay Carney... Coincidence? I think not. Obama is on to you.

How small are his hands? Does he smell like cabbage?

(shudder)

If they gave us a tax rebate for carrying/purchasing a device, would the cost then be considered a tax?

The real problem with BH is that it only works in certain browsers, on certain operating systems. Thank you Robert Wright for your MSFT-centric view of the world.

edutcher said...

Gary Hart thought that, since he aped Jack Kennedy, the media's indulgence would carry over.

He forgot about the National Enquirer.

Anent Hagar and deborah, politicians forget that it's "promote the general welfare", not provide it.

No sweat. It's Mrs Pogo that had to go to the ER and I haven't seen anything. He's probably still there or possibly laying down trying to collect himself.

I hope things turn out well for Mr. and Mrs. Pogo. My prayers and best wishes.

coketown said...

This diavlog was quite boring. Agreeable people are only fascinating when they're charismatic, and Matt Welch is dead weight in that regard. Turnips have more charisma. Next time pair up with a turnip. If you can't find one, Michelle Goldberg will suffice. She's like a wincing turnip.

I'm praying for Pogo and his wife, too. Poor guy. Does he have a tweeter? Has anyone been following his tweeter? The last news I heard was last night.

Then they had better mandate for themselves to fix the cell phone reception in our area. There are more 'dead zones' than there are areas where you can make a call.

I don't use a cell phone unless I'm traveling. In which case I have one of those throwaway phones where you buy a block of time. Last year I bought an hour and still didn't use all the minutes. I don't have voice mail on the throwaway phone either. I just don't care.

There is no one that I want to talk to that much that I need to be wedded to a cell phone or that I can't wait until I reach my destination.

If they DID mandate that we own a cell phone, can they mandate that we turn the damned thing on or that we will ever check for messages.

As far as I gathered she went to the ER. He relayed the news in one of the threads last night and sounded distraught, which is especially jarring considering it's Pogo of all people.

Granted. No clue as to what happened?

DBQ,

Remember the school district that turned on the laptops the students had taken home with them?

And recorded what the cameras saw?

Where does Matt think the Austro-Hungarian Empire had bases on the North Sea?

Matt's ok I guess, but sometimes he tries to overcompensate for his boringness by pretending libertarianism makes him avant-garde.

I've seen where ancient statues were painted, but not buildings. I'm under the impression this varied from place to place and time to time.

In any event: I'll be happy to argue the Renaissance got it better. There's a dazzling purity to white marble. Neo-Classicism is an estimable and long-established aesthetic in its own right.

You can pick on the FBI building or the WWII memorial (very Mussoliniesque, yes). But we've got the Capitol, Jefferson/Lincoln/Washington Memoriments, the National Gallery, Natural History Museum-- all imposing in my view, and full of delights.

Granted, none of them's the Vatican for goddsakes, but lighten up Matt. Yes, we know you must find Georgetown cocktail parties so **boring**, you goddamn freespirit, you.

On a more somber note though, the final chunk on Google and internet privacy, etc., was very well-spoken and -argued.

Ann's extempore mini-orations were a moving summation of the difficulty and agony she and the blog have recently been submitted to.

I cringe to think of the love letters I have on gmail.

Lucius said...

One final (back to more frivolous) note:

I felt a pang when I saw that the next and latest bloggingheads features Michelle Goldberg. Oh for the days of Ann & Michelle diavlogs!

I realize both parties might (or might not) deeply lament that history. But I hope the pairing is not verboten.

Althouse/Goldberg is the best heads-of-hair pairing since Kerry-Edwards. And the Kursk of academic catfights!

Apparently those ancient Greek statues you mentioned were all painted gaudy colors anyway . . . they're all clean and white and "classic" because time wore away the pain.
