"That wasn't addressed to you, Mr. Meade. I've seen enough of your shameless trolling in every corner of the Internets to take any thing you say in good faith."

Commenter in a ridiculous thread in which Meade challenges people who characterize the voter ID requirement as "Jim Crow" racism.

This is not Jim Crowe like. Those laws were passed by Democrats. Most Blacks in Wisconsin live in cities, and the DMV has several offices near at hand. As for those in rural counties, they have to plan for everything. Mail takes longer, getting to the latest movies takes longer, everything takes longer, except the peace that comes with rural living.

I am disappointed though. I thought Meade reserved his shameless trolling for this site. How would that poster know unless they were stalking the Meade? Hmm, don't ask the police to investigate.

Rock on Ann, I'm glad you're back in business.

The notion of "Jim Crow Wisconsin" is utterly ridiculous.

Come forward you defenders of unchecked voting--come forward and show us that what you're really angry about is a challenge to "business as usual" voter fraud.

Listen, Democrats scream "racism" because it 1) covers them in moral superiority and 2) pretend this is about hatred of black people. As they know, this has nothing to do with black people and everything to do with 1) preventing foreign citizens from voting in our elections and 2) preventing liberals from continuing to steal elections decade after decade.

Wisconsin has a non-driver ID card like almost every other state. Everyone should have one to conduct the business of their life. Like 'Squito said, you can't do shit without ID.

garage mahal said...

With these shit policies I'd want as few people voting as possible too.

Fuck YOU Wisconsin!

Henry said...

Now that we have Obamacare, maybe to register to vote you have to show your health insurance card.

DADvocate said...

The woman who wrote the article said this in the comments, "You're right, of course, that the provision for free ideas gets the bill around the whole poll tax thing."

She's referring to IDs. Does she know the difference between IDs and ideas? She obviously doesn't respect the right to vote, but sees it as something to be practiced carelessly.

Why don't they take the same position on the right to bear arms? Wisconsin is one of the few states to not allow concealed carry with a license. Why should someone, in any state, have to have a license to carry a gun, concealed or unconcealed. It's a constitutional right, just like voting.

I just finished a concealed carry class in Ohio, cost me $125 and it was the cheapest class I could find. Next, I'll have to pay the state $67.50 for a cc license. How's that different than a poll tax in preventing you from practicing your constitutional rights.

The Jim Crow argument is not in good faith. The lefties want as many of their useful idiots to vote as often as possible, and they'll distort and lie to do it. The picture with the article is far beyond rational argument. People like Emily Mills have no respect for democracy, quite the opposite. The see the democratic process as something to be manipulated and abused to get what they want.

Grammatically speaking, doesn't that sentence imply a total confidence in Meade's reliability and honesty?

In order to ensure that you exercise your voting right on polling day, you need the following:

* YOUR new IIEC Elector’s Card and the new generation Identity Card (ID).
* ONLY those who have the new IIEC Elector’s Your Vote, Your Future Card and the new generation ID as it appears in the IIEC Voter Register will be allowed to vote;

Rats, no link. There never is.

The truth is there is virtually zero actual voter fraud in Wisconsin. Van Hollen spent two years investigating alleged voter impropriety and found 11 potentially improper votes in November 2008 out of 2.96 million cast. That’s 0.00003%

So WI taxpayers are on the hook for 6 million dollars for a totally useless program and only accomplishing keeping legitmate voters from voting. Almost a million dollar per illegal vote.

So why don't these people spend their time educating people about voting and how they can get a photo ID which would facilitate them voting? If these people are sooo unaware -- run the info on all the entertinment channels so they can learn about where to get their IDs.

Much of this type of concern for the disdvantaged makes these people sound pathetic inepts. (How do they fet to the polling place?)

How about concern for protecting the legal right and privilege of qualified voters to vote and have their votes fully weighted, so to speak, by keeping unqualified or illegal people from voting?

If Walker really wanted to bust unions in Wisconsin, he would have legislation out making Wisconsin a Right to Work state. The reason there have been few prosecutions of voter fraud is because Democrats control jurisdictions where it happens, and they won't prosecute.

Don't forget it is Democratic liberals who refused to allow a North Carolina town to eliminate partisan town elections, because without the party affiliation the African-Americans wouldn't know who to vote for.

Everyone is getting checks for not working, and they simply prefer to be a little poor and not work rather than upwardly mobile and go to work everyday. Full disclosure: I do spend more than half of my time outside of cities, but that's because I like being in homes where I can quickly access out door activities. And, even these houses are w/in a couple hours of a good size city.

I have friends that live only in "country" homes, such that they'll use a hotel in the cities because they don't go in too often. But, I could never do that. Living only in places where there's nothing to do, and everything closes at five or six is awful, imho.

I was honestly trying to get some names of really nice cities that are strictly righty-run. Bagoh20's suggestion that righty ideas are quasi-genetically incapable of running cities seemed like a lame answer. Really? Nobody can come up w/ a name? We must conclude that it's impossible for right wing philosophy to create a great city? If that was true it would be quite an indictment of right wing philosophy. But, I doubt that it is true.

*Although, I did have a great place. It was a huge piece of property on top of a large plateau. The house looked directly at the ocean. [Technically, the house was in Ferndale, but it was the Eureka hood.]

I've also spent a bit of time in Peoria, but I didn't buy a place. I thought it'd be funny to got to the "famous" Peoria, so I could see what "sells" there. It was horrible. Yuck!

Seven,

It happens (except for restaurants) in the small town where I'm currently sitting. And, it happens in a lot of other places I live.

But, all of these small towns are w/in a couple hours of a nice city. For example, tomorrow morning I'm meeting friends at 9AM, and I'll have no problem getting there if I leave at 7:30AM. And, I have a house in that city too, so I can be out late w/o needing to go back to my little town where everything closes.

The senseless sprawl of Los Angeles and the Valley is no argument for liberalism, even before the economy cratered out there and people started leaving in droves.

Synova said...

I lived in San Bernardino for a while many many years ago. I think that the air is better now.

As for "liberal" cities... I think that there is something about a city, simply *as* a city, that sort of presumes a "liberal" outlook. I don't know that it's liberal in any classic sense, but the essential interference in other people's lives, I think, is sort of inescapable when everyone is impacted by whatever anyone else chooses to do.

There are so many rules and you have to follow them simply to maintain reasonable sanitation among other things. So there are rules about tidy lawns and you don't get to chose if you want to pay for parks or not and utilities and everything are one thing for everyone and you've no choice. You've got zoning commissioners and building commissioners and everythingelse commissioners and absolutely everything is regulated.

But how else could that many people live that closely together and have clean streets and gas lines and sewers and not have your neighbor do something stupid so that your whole block burns to the ground?

But I think it becomes a habit and the worst "lefty" places start to think that they can just decide how they want the world to work, just throw practical things out the window. Take Berkeley and some of the things they decide they can just do without... like decent roads for cars, because cars are bad. And it's colorful and has atmosphere, but no parking.

And it works anyway because people have jobs someplace else because there are other places that haven't made it impossible for businesses to transport goods into or out of, and they don't have the color and they don't have the atmosphere and people can drive out to Maple Grove where everything has more of an Irvine sort of sterility and they can work and Berkeley survives and thrives and feels superior.

Sante Fe is liberal to the extreme. It's colorful and has atmosphere and the oldest most colorful parts (which are very old, indeed, older than the original New England colonies) have roads wide enough for a single car and art galleries and new age spiritualist "Tibetan wind gardens" and public art and a $10 minimum wage and laws that require McDonalds to construct tasteful buildings that don't clash with adobe architecture.

But Sante Fe and the people who live there want it to stay quaint and small and colorful and atmospheric.

Which is why they need an expensive commuter rail system to Albuquerque that can never manage to pay for itself without subsidies.

Bellevue, Washington- the small (122K) conservative city across Lake Washington from Seattle (adjacent to Redmond, which you may be more familiar with). It is beautiful, clean, and safe. It's Republican Dave Reichert's district (was Jennifer Dunn's before that).

In Seattle, you can be beaten within an inch of your life while waiting for a bus, or minding your own business walking down the street in Belltown. I don't have to tell you how liberal it is, and that its city government seems to have a goal of out-San Franciscoing San Francisco - and it shows.

And yet, drive ten minutes across the lake, and it's like a different world entirely.

I don't know guys. Maybe Emily is right and we should re-think all of this. If there is one subject the Democrats must be considered experts at it would have to be Jim Crow laws... after all... they created them.

And with Democrats overwhelmingly holding most of the positions of authority in DMV's (in lieu of finding more honest work) they would certainly be in a position to screw over black people again. When the other side tells you they can't be trusted and they have a documented history of untrustworthiness to back it up then maybe it would behoove us to believe their confession.

They already have an exceedingly low opinion of the competency of black people so it is a very small step from there to not considering blacks competent to exercise their franchise.... that small step of course consisting mainly of blacks starting to vote Republican.

Ha! That's where I'll be tomorrow at 9AM.

But, I would never buy a house in Bellevue. The place is boring at night. Even if you're hanging w/ the so-called jet setters over there, if you don't do coke, the party scene gets old. Not to mention that they spend plenty of time in the city too.

And, during the day I'd rather shop/eat/explore downtown Seattle (or Green Lake, where I have a house). Although it is nice that Bellevue folks have their own Louis store. Do you remember when the Seattle area didn't have any Louis stores (after I Magnin closed)? Now they have two!

P.S.
I have no problem admitting that there are unfun parts of big lib cities. But, imho, these cities also have aspects that I love. I'm not saying I'd like to be stuck in the bad parts of these cities. If I lived there I'm sure it'd suck.

And Althouse/Meade - if you're out there, this piece seems like something you might find intriguing:

Judges hand down the law with help from Bob Dylan

"No musician's lyrics are more often cited than Dylan's in court opinions and briefs, say legal experts who have chronicled the artist's influence on today's legal community. From U.S. Supreme Court rulings to law school courses, Dylan's words are used to convey messages about the law and courts gone astray."

I had to renew my license at the RMV, only to fail the eye exam and was forced to get new glasses. It took over a week, before I could return to the bank and open the account.

The bank employee who denied my account until I had valid ID was Hispanic, BTW. Ha!

It's not minorities, I worry about. It's probably the elderly who don't travel, open new bank accounts, or drive on a regular basis.

Look, this whole meme constructed to tar the repubs as 'racist' is only too typical. Essentially the dem hysterics are aimed at waiving any requirement for proper ID at the polls.

Furthermore the claim that voters are somehow being 'disenfranchised' is a false inoculate, its purpose being another scenario to further relieve 'some folks' from a basic responsibility I think most have come to accept. That is, something as simple as needing gov't-issued ID to prove your age in order to get into a club, or your residence to get a license for driving, business, etc.

When the left start showing some consistency on this, only then will I give it any credence.

As far as the remarks made towards Meade, well clearly this indicates his effectiveness. Again, wear as a 'badge of honor' the bleating of the pansy left.

But, do you REALLY 'worry' for others, this requirement to have proper ID? Why?

What would keep someone from obtaining proper ID? Is this 'perceived' problem really a personal responsibility?

I have to believe this 'problem' is really just excuse-making. Nobody cares if I have proper ID, unless its a requirement - that is, my neighbor has NEVER come over to my house just to check and make sure I have proper ID or if I've had trouble getting some.

Its another false meme of the pansy left. If you fall for it, you're one of 'them'.

That little factoid is from a letter Gwen Moore wrote recently. But notice she said "valid" license, not "no license" at all. Many people in Milwaukee drive with suspended or revoked driver's licenses. A simple thing like not paying a parking ticket will lead to a suspended license and people will ignore that and still drive.

Twice as likely?! Yes, liberal Wisconsin has a bigotry problem. Mills needs to focus her efforts on helping minorities get and retain valid driver's licenses. Let's address the root problem, not some imaginary bullshit that ultimately keeps the minorities repressed and at the mercy of the liberal fascists.

This bill is, at its core, a rollback of the right to vote that impacts the most vulnerable and already disenfranchised populations in the state. It spits in the face of those who've come before and fought (and sometimes died) to see this most fundamental right guaranteed to all citizens – not just those with a specific skin color, gender, or pocketbook size.

First question: How in the world does requiring an ID card take away the right to vote of those who are not white, male and rich? I can't even believe how absurd this statement is.

Unsurprisingly, Rep. Tamara Grigsby's final statement regarding the bill was right-on. "I find it disgusting that we're taking away people's right to vote while making it easier for them to carry a gun"

So I gather all the rumors I heard about college students in Milwaukee voting multiple times was just Faux news propaganda? Funny how dead people manage to vote repeatedly in Philly. Or people with homes in Florida and New York were shown to have voted for POTUS in both places.

I doubt that it is that hard to procure fake id's. Here in Florida renewing your driver's license is a bitch. Now you show up in person and wait perhaps three hours in line and best be sure you have all the bs paperwork, like an original birth certificate and various documentation of your marriages/divorces plus bills to show your address. How do they even know you're the person who is named on the paperwork? Figure someway that the state or feds cannot abuse the info and perhaps it would be good to have fingerprints, retina scans or dna as proof?
I registered to vote last time and when I showed up at my local designated precinct, they had no record of me. Government lackeys are, in my experience, truly awful employees. You see it in post office customer service, at the dmv or, in my case, supervision of state employees in pa. state government.
The media mainly turns a blind eye on the abuses. Whhy isn't Eric Holder held accountable for crap like the Black Panthers vote intimidation in Philly, where he took them off the hook or the gun fiasco where ATF allowed illegal arms sales to narcoterrorists resulting in death of a US agent?
Something is rotten in Denmark and partisans like Garbage on this site continue to enable the bad acts of the governing elite. Seriously, I'm not going to be all that surprised if we get some excuse for martial law and suspension of elections. Far too many brain dead apologists for Obama out there.
Good to see that RINO Huckabee isn't running but what other useless pol will the media be pushing on us?
I know plenty of people are against the right to bear arms and buy into the propaganda that crime would fall if regular citizens had all firearms seized. And so we have Hillary and Obama seeking an accommodation with the UN for a treaty to eventually seize our guns. How does the constitution support that and why would Obama not just continue to ignore court rulings that he does unconstitutional things?

Current disparate impact, namely that minorities and the elderly are less likely to have such identification. That's why groups like the NAACP don't support these sorts of laws. If these sorts of laws didn't affect minorities more than others, I'd suspect the NAACP and other groups like it wouldn't spend their time and political capital on this issue.

Ms. Mills went somewhere she didn't need to; let's call it gratuitous. And thereby lost the opportunity to debate on the merits: voter fraud is not a substantial problem in WI and AB 7 is likely to disproportionately disenfranchise those who cannot easily get government-issued ID cards.

Who knows how those folks would vote for sure. Republicans are betting they are more likely to be Democrats or they wouldn't have done it.

Hard to know what the overall effect will actually be. Politicians like Obama and Jesse Ventura expanded the electorate in positive ways. Why are the Republicans trying to shrink it? Because over the long run (given US demographics) they know the tide is turning??

And for what it's worth, I have mixed opinions about such laws. I don't see why it's such a big burden to go out and get a state-issued ID. (I've had one since I was 16.) I know of several teachers who drove a distance to help collect signatures for recall petitions. I'm sure they have friends who would let them "stay with them" for a few weeks to establish residency. The threshold for same day registration is pretty low: a piece of postage with your name on it or another voter to "verify" your address.

The fact is that your way allows for a much greater opportunity for voter fraud and Dems across the country strongly prefer this for some odd reason.

There is no voter fraud in WIsconsin. Walker's own AG did a two yr investigation into it, and found jack shit. In a sane world that would be the ned of it. But of course we don't live in that world, we live in conservabubble fantasy world.

The easy fraud would be these easily hacked voting computers, in charge by partisan crook hacks like Kathy Nickolaus in Waukesha Cty, who, for some reason keeps getting re-elected.

"What's your position on ALL our civil rights? What about the impediments to a black person's right to bear arms?"

"I'd say they have the same right to bear arms as all Americans. Next question?"

And this is different from a requirement to have a State ID with your picture and address on it, how?

The same right. Absolutely.

Frankly, I don't think that the objections to this are any more honest than the Democrats think the Republicans are when they say it's about fraud. The Democrats don't think that *anyone* is going to be disenfranchised. No one. And even if they don't think that there is any ID related fraud to be dealt with, why not? The why not is simply that an opportunity to score political points by calling Republicans racists can't be passed up.

Never mind that what so many of us have pointed out is true. That to be a *racial* issue, black voters have to be children in need of care because they can't manage what any red neck in a trailer court can manage, which is get a state ID to buy beer.

(And when it comes to firearm licensing and concealed carry the "lets get three huge black gang-banger types up here" person does make one wonder if black people applying for permits would be unfairly refused because of racist attitudes that assume that black people are scary when they have guns. It seems more likely to me than the DMV refusing an ID because someone looks less pale than most Wisconsonites.)

Assembly Bill 7 must be race related. Why, the Isthmus even has an accompanying picture from the 60's of racist, rampaging, rouge cops roughing up some black citizens.

But catch the Isthmus article/announcement directly above:

"Debriefing the #wiunion movement"

"I invite you all to come down to the shiny new Union South tonight for the New Organizing Institute's 'Organizing the Occupation of the Capitol: The Role of Social Media' panel discussion."

Absent any electoral victories, “Organizing the Occupation of the Capitol” seems to be the left's major ...err... “accomplishment” of late.

I see an annual remembrance, maybe including a day off school, in Wisconsin's future.

voter fraud is not a substantial problem in WI

Well, we don't know that. Because of our preference for secret ballots, after the fact, it's extremely difficult to detect fraud. What we do have is a lack of confidence in the integrity of the voting process, due to the accurate perception that fraud is not difficult to commit. If you are opposed to the voter ID law, how about proposing some alternative methods to assure that fraud is minimized? You aren't going to restore faith in the process by shouting "move along, nothing to see here." Far from it.

Did anyone else have the immediate reaction to "shiny new Union South" of "Wow, and who paid for that?"

Sofa King, I understand your point. Fraud is hard detect.

However, shouldn't new public laws be based on more than perceptions ("lack of confidence")? Both parties have won lots of elections over the years, so it's not as though one has a leg up. Why is voter fraud a problem when Republicans just won the governor's seat + both houses?

I think laws should be based on some evidence of a need for correction, more than perceived "lack of confidence."

"Walker's own AG"

Wasn't J.B. van Hollen in office long before Walker was elected? He's hardly "Walker's own A.G."

I've extended this invitation before and I'll do it again. Garage Mahal and all others who just know that there's no election fraud are welcome to come with me to visit a few barber shops in Racine and Kenosha. I'll show you several people who live in Illinois and voted in Wisconsin; and you'll get a chance to listen in to some of the political conversations.

Sofa King puts the triple tap on Garage's ridiculous no fraud argument.

Mine was a fact, and a link, to Walker's own Attorney General, who spent two yrs investigating it. Sofa King said "we don't know". We're supposed to believe there is rampant fraud of people voting twice, or from out of state? Risking 10,000 and 5 yrs in jail? Illegal immigrants risking deportation to register one vote? You guys are on good shit if really believe that. But of course you dont really believe it either, if it keeps some Democrats away from the booth you're perfectly fine with it. About the only part of the Constitution the right really gives a shit about is guns. The rest can be ignored for the most part.

The elderly don't need to work, but younger black people do. Anyone who actually cares about people would want to solve the problem, if black people really do not have IDs, rather than perpetuate it. If there really is some impediment that Republicans don't see to getting an ID card from the DMV, some reason that it's difficult, wouldn't that be the place to put energy into?

The notion that black people are uniquely incapable of getting something that every person needs to function, to work, to cash checks, to buy beer or cigarettes, fails the common sense test. It's ridiculous on the face of it.

Complaining that college students wouldn't get to vote places other than their permanent residence and that they might not even have a permanent residence, or bother to establish one, for years had more logic to it. But being against able bodied, obviously intelligent and capable white kids doesn't have the political leverage that being against black people, the oppressed, the incapable, really can't be expected to do something that a college student can do, has.

It really is a prejudicial, racist attitude that can make that distinction. But as I've said, I don't think that the Democrats believe that *anyone* will be disenfranchised if they have to have an ID. I think they just can't pass up the opportunity to make it about race, because racism is the trump card. That it requires this assumption of impotency directed at the people they're supposedly arguing for is ignored.

In the end, public trust and confidence in the system is important. And if the voter ID thing does nothing, it still could be used as a bargaining chip... you get voter ID and we get... whatever the Democrats think will help.
