"Margaret is a distinguished legal scholar and a lively intellect. She has a keen sense of the strengths of our Law School. We are delighted she has decided to join our team."
Said UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin.

As I predicted.
Will there be a recount?
Aw, come on. Be nice. Read the text at the link before you grind out cynicism and cliches.
I'm sure this person is upstanding, a stellar wit, institutionally visionary, and professionally fabulous. What person who attains the position of law school dean isn't?
At the same time, none of that is really any fun to talk about.
Congrats to Margaret Raymond!
But...
I heard she has a tendency to throw chalk. By that I mean... that I heard... that she's a chalk-thrower!!!
Just look at this photo. You know she's gettin' ready to launch that stick at some poor schlump.
One particular tale I heard concerns one time Thurgood Marshall was going to decide a case in a way that Raymond didn't agree with. So she pummeled him with a full magazine of unused dustless whites.
And Thurgood was like, "Yo, Bitch! Stop throwing chalk at DA JUSTICE!"
And Raymond was like, "Listen, Nigga, you can't go that way on this case. Reconsider! Or the eraser's coming at you next!"
Nobody knows how it ended up. If any of you old court observers remember Marshall suddenly appearing a bit more white, this might have been why.
But that story is probably apocryphal...
What's her sexual orientation?
Aw, come on. What besides the first sentence is worth discussing? Generic compliments like, "Margaret is a distinguished legal scholar and a lively intellect"? History of the law school? The $330,000 salary?
I read the link and found a story ripe for cynicism and cliches. Have faith in your readers.
Picked the worst in the lot. But she doesn't have a prick that can get cut off.
She's a dyke isn't she?
I have been interviewing candidates for my entire career and if I ever interview a candidate that is fag I never send them along to the hiring manager.
I just don't want the competition.
I can understand why Althouse doesn't want to provide a soapbox that could make the new dean uncomfortable. That's mean and unnecessary and unwise.
But, really, what is there to say? There's now no drama here whatsoever.
But I'll try to provide some, anyway: will she by some Wisconsin law now be deemed fit to practice in Wisconsin like law school graduates from the two in-state schools?
And if another fag at my company sniffs me out I immediately banish them.
Sorry, I have access to confidential information and I don't need any more girlfriends.
From the law students I talked to (including myself), most wanted the guy who was the lobbyist. It would've been nice to see some money come into the school.
Also, why is Biddy Martin the one making the call? Should it be people affiliated with the law school? Bizarre bureaucracy here at UW.
She's a dyke isn't she?
I hope you're not basing that just on the hairstyle.
I mean... the hairstyle is telling... but wouldn't be enough evidence on its own to constitute a preponderance.
Are my postings going to go onto some other Law Site and everyone is going to bitch about Althouse?
If so, I am being totally sarcastic and I myself am of the homosexual persuasion.
Please, I beg of you, don't think my postings have any relevance to the Divine Miss Althouse's character.
She has been more than gracious to me, as a gay and commenter, for many many years.
I am just fortunate I am still here.
I mean... the hairstyle is telling... but wouldn't be enough evidence on its own to constitute a preponderance.
Any pictures of her playing softball?
Any pictures of her playing softball?
Ah... the Elena Kagan Softball Lesbian Test! The EKSLT for short.
I don't know of any pictures of Margaret Raymond playing softball.
But Raymond and Kagan both attended Hunter College High School in New York City, and both clerked for Justice Thurgood Marshall.
Close colleague of a softball player? Combine that with the hairstyle and we are indeed getting somewhere...
More proof! Let's build a solid case for lesbohood and make the new Dean proud!
I am sorry the hair styles can be very deceiving. Many a time I have seen a womyn who has "the hair style" and I automatically think carpet muncher.
But much to my surprise a friend or relative tell me that the person actually is a breeder and has a lovely husband and a couple of spoiled brats.
In addition, you can never trust the womyn on the entire gay thing. They can be a dyke for awhile but then all of a sudden meet a man, get married, and have a family. What's that all about anyway?

It's the natural state of women, Titus! They find women sexually attractive too, and they'll consummate that attraction if there isn't a big cost to be paid. But that's just for kicks. Like Neil Diamond says, soon they need a man.
Have you seen Craig Ferguson's new gay robot sidekick?
What's that all about anyway?
Have you ever known a woman to make up her mind on anything?
Any pictures of her playing softball?
Does she wear Doc Martens?
Does she drive a Subaru?
No one's asked about her rack, or did that get covered in the first cesspool?
I called it early.
The dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the school, with responsibility for faculty and staff development, personnel oversight, fundraising, budget planning and management, curriculum and student academic affairs.
Riot control has been dropped.
So, U of W cow college goes to U of I cow college for it's 'prime breeder'. Wouldn't it been more efficient to go up the road to ABS? Their bull is world class! Anywho--good to see the 'lawyer ethics' background. When I was admitted to the WI Bar I had not yet graduated, same for Western District, bless Justice Day and Judge Crabb for conspiring with our Dean at the time who swore me to double-double secrecy to protect the school's accreditation. No 'ethical' problem there. But who am I to judge--I learned my ethics in a tropical paradise in 4 short years--killing babies by day and making babies by night.I still think abortion should be legal up to age 18.
On the surface her CV doesn't seem as impressive as Allard's, but with "clerk for Thurgood Marshall" in her CV perhaps Raymond doesn't need much more.
At least you didn't get stuck with Nichol.
@murgatroyd, my wife drives a Subaru. You have sumpin' against women who drive Subarus? Yeah, I'm talkin' to you.
Aw, come on. Be nice. Read the text at the link before you grind out cynicism and cliches.
Are those rules now? Reading the text at the link and being nice have never been part of authentic culture of the comments here.
A keen intellect is nice, but I ask five questions of a law school dean:
1. Will this candidate raise money?
2. Will she improve the profile of the school?
3. Will she raise money?
4. Will she massage faculty egos?
5. Seriously, the money thing: is she going to raise it?
Her job is to attract talented people, give them the resources to succeed, and not set anything on fire.
SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
Is she a Yankees fan?
We will see about her the next time Wisconsin plays Iowa. Will Margaret be the Lady in Red?
The good news: I did a quick search to find something really stupid that Margaret Raymond had said or done and could find nothing. That's unusual these days.
The bad news: none.
Good luck, Margaret Raymond.
What is "a lively intellect?"
(And does the '?' go in or out?)
Is it one of those things that you know when you see it?
I just don't want the competition.
LOL.
$330,000
Wow.
Aw, come on. Be nice. Read the text at the link before you grind out cynicism and cliches.
....then why-in-the-world do you keep comments?
Besides, my cynicism has never let me down.
Wasn't she the one on the bike in the Wizard of OZ?
That was my expectation.
@murgatroyd, my wife drives a Subaru. You have sumpin' against women who drive Subarus? Yeah, I'm talkin' to you.
I have nothing against Subaru-driving women. But I hate to break it to you — Your wife is a lesbian.
Wasn't she the one on the bike in the Wizard of OZ?
Troop, everyone knows that's Nomar Garciaparra.
Jeez.
I just remember how people well telling me how much better Nomar was than Jeter. How did that work out for them?
Jeter is closing in on 3,000 hits.
Nomar is also closing in on 3,000 hits. On the "Where are they now" website.
Over Allard? Yow!
A moderately serious Google search discloses little about Margaret Raymond except for her Hawaiian birth and Indonesian adoption. No hint about orientation that I could find. This leaves one to speculate. I've seen comments about her hairdo, choice of automobile and even one regrettable reference to the size of the new Dean's rack. I'm going to stick my neck out and suggest that Margaret is in fact a Nutsy Wutsy American. If so, her appointment is a body blow to discrimination against Nutsy Wutsy Americans everywhere and is simultaneously a bold instance of long delayed affirmative action to overcome the pervasive institutional anti-Nutsy Wutsyism that plagues the United States. Good for you, Margaret and good for all those who made this possible. For the first time in my life I'm proud of my country.
'She will earn an annual salary of $330,000.'
Jeez!
I'm glad they didn't pick the guy who'd been Law School head 2x already. But isn't she from Iowa? Good to know that such a dire shortcoming can be overcome.
Althouse,
"Aw, come on. Be nice."
You know, I came in here intending to be gracious and all that, I really did.
But confound it, when Peter Hoh lets fly with a totally hysterical, timely jest in the second comment, what am I to do?
I LOL'd! Gotta give humor credit where it is due.
I knew the minute the anti-blog-comments bit ramped up that the lesbian would get the appointment.
Y'all guaranteed it. She owes you, big time.
Actually, she has a husband and two children.
