Did the anti-Tea Party protesters boo the national anthem at the Madison rally yesterday?

I'm seeing some assertions about this on blogs and in YouTube videos, and it's wrong if not unfair and deceptive. I don't have my own video, because I mishandled the button on my camera, but I was right behind the Tea Party crowd amid anti-Tea Party protesters who were making a lot of noise trying to drown out whatever was coming from the podium. They were, in fact, succeeding in their purpose so well that they could not hear when the national anthem began.

I started walking forward and it took a while for me to recognize the anthem. My observation was that those who could hear it were not booing. The "rockets red glare" line seemed louder, and there was a noticeable hushing that extended back into the anti-Tea Party areas of the crowd.

Meade and I have observed some of the most raucous rallies at the Capitol over the last 2 months, and the national anthem was sung many times, by the protesters themselves, and we witnessed respect for the anthem. In fact, you could go into the rotunda and start singing the anthem and people would go silent and even sing along with real feeling. They might have resented having to switch to solemnity when they were into raucousness, but they knew very well that they had to at least look like they respected the anthem.

Outdoors, yesterday, the acoustics were distorted, the anthem began unexpectedly, and the noisemakers were into their thing, drowning out the tea partiers. You cannot infer disrespect for the national anthem. But if you want to get back at people who are trying to drown you out, it's a good trick to start singing the anthem, while video-recording.... though maybe that's not properly respectful of the anthem.

Sure, why not?

Why not? Why not infringe on other Americans' constitutional rights to peaceably assemble and express their rights to free speech?

If you truly believe there is nothing wrong with that, garage, I am seriously and profoundly disappointed in you.

What are they doing about it?

What actions are they taking?

How could you possibly be disappointed?

And do you believe that free speech includes shouting down those whose views diverge from your own, in order to prevent their speech from being heard by others?

again, last summer the Tea Party stormed public townhall meetings on healthcare and got real loud, and I don't remember you having a problem with that. And nobody was even infringed upon yesterday. They spoke, some booed, and everyone went home.

This post was written in response to this comment in the previous post, which has a url to a YouTube video titled "leftists booing star spangled banner." I'm not linking to that video because it doesn't deserve a link.

So, this was about one video? Not as you asserted in the post?..."I'm seeing some assertions about this on blogs and in YouTube videos"

So, your post was about one url in your comment section about one video. So why the use of the words assertions, blogs & videos. That "s" on the end of each of those words is different than what you are asserting here.

You're not linking to that video because it totally belies your entire post and you don't want people to see that video of leftists booing our national anthem.

Ironically, the person taking that video is talking (while the national anthem is sung) about how the the lefties are showing disrespect for the national anthem. His companion then noted (while the national anthem was still being sung) the moment when the lefties catch on and quiet down.

It's obvious how to get to it from what I said. Why are you saying I should *link* to it?

Ann Althouse said...

No. I also Googled and saw that it was an active subject, which is why I linked to my Google search. That was enough to make me want to present my direct observation.

I seriously don't get what your problem is. (You're sounding like a troll, so I recommend doing what you can to avoid that label, because I am at the point of ignoring you. The next thing you say needs to be worthwhile or I will be skipping your comments in the future.)

(29) million 2008 Obama voters stayed home Nov. 2010 and the House is now controlled by boehner/cantor.

Soooo what are boehner/cantor doing or do they agree w/Obama re: all his military decisions.

Posted this at another forum a couple days ago:

Obama’s No-Shows: 29 Million

November 03, 2010 4:32 PM

One way to look at yesterday’s election is to say that about 29 million Obama voters from 2008 simply didn’t show up this time around.

Here’s how: Current estimate is that 90 million people voted. Exit poll says 45 percent were Obama voters in 2008. That’s 40.5 million voters.

In 2008, Obama won 69.5 million votes. So about 29 million Obama voters did not show up in 2010.

Exit poll also says 45 percent of people who voted yesterday were McCain voters in 2008, again 40.5 million. That, vs. his nearly 60 million in 2008, means about 19.5 million McCain voters did not show up.

So Obama had nearly 10 million more no-shows.
~~~~~
Sadly, change "we" can believe in died on election day 2008 ie real financial reform, realistic health care reform, environmental protection, etc.
As always America survives despite itself and did I mention boehner/cantor now have the ball in their court.
Ironically one of the best things Obama has going for him are the newly elected Rep governors in OH, PA, ME, WI, FL, VA, NJ, NM, NV, AZ etc.
Again, elections come down to choices and a perfect politician has yet to be found ~ go figure.
Althouse: "Why are you saying I should *link* to it?"
Because that's the honest thing to do. Why would you NOT link it? Not linking to it is transparently akin to wishing that it not be seen.
You say it is "unfair" and "deceptive" to criticize this booing and disrespecting that the video clearly shows occurring as if there is no basis upon which to criticize.
Clearly, there is a rational basis to criticize these people for their disrespect. And the video shows that.
It is neither unfair, nor deceptive, in my view, after watching the very video you claim doesn't show anti-Tea Party activists booing, cat-calling and otherwise disrespecting the National Anthem.
You don't want to link to the video because it shows what you say it doesn't show. I can think of no other reason why you would not embed the video.
I say, embed it. Let your very intelligent readers make up their own minds about what it shows or what it does not show.
I suppose I have to come down on the side of "you can't cheat an honest man."
I could concede that the crowd did not purposefully yell "Koch Sucker" or other rude things at a 14 year old (who may be as tall as an adult, but isn't going to *sound* like one) or purposefully boo "God Bless America" or purposefully boo the national anthem or even, perhaps, purposefully behave rudely during a prayer.
But nothing could have tricked them into doing any of those things had they been respecting other people's right to speech and assembly.
They could not have been "cheated" had they been "honest" at the outset.
Why *not* hold them accountable for what they couldn't hear? Why not? Simply being decent people would have saved them from all of it because they could have heard what they were boo'ing. The only fair conclusion is that they didn't care what they were boo'ing or drowning out, no matter who or what it was.
DECENT people also do not like seeing screaming TPers spitting in the face of Congressmen, or calling other Congressmen racial epithets...
It did not happen. The congressmen chose to walk through the crowd to try to provoke a reaction. An interesting aside: they felt safe enough to do this without security people! Unlike Republican state senators in Wisconsin.
In order to document the egregious behaviour they hoped to provoke, they filmed the whole thing. Photos and cell phone videos show Jesse Jackson, Jr. taking video of the protesters during the walk.
Yet no one could produce video of anyone yelling the "n" word. NO ONE. If you can, there's $100,000 waiting for you at Breitbart.com.
There's no video. There's other video in addition to what the Rev's son shot. In addition to the lack of screaming of racial slurs, what's interesting about this video is that the behaviour of the people contradicts the claims of congressmen. Crowds of people and some are "screaming the n-word" - wouldn't you see some people turn around and look at the source of that slur? It's not something you typically hear screamed in public, unless you're a black conservative at a liberal gathering, particularly if there's union goons about :). Yet NO ONE looks around to see who's screaming "n--ger"
Anyway, after initial breathless accounts of multiple protesters screaming the n-word, the congressmen then refused direct comment, referring those questioning their story to the congressmen's spokespeople.
Powerline Blog did much to document that the claim of racial slurs being hurled is a lie.
They did a 17 part series on this incident and document in detail substantial evidence that the accusations were completely false.
Synova said...
"If we have a right to peaceably assemble, does it not logically follow that disruption of that assembly whether by a government or by intent by another group of citizens violates that right?"
We generally view free-speech as rights against the government, however, it seems completely possible for a private citizen to violate someone's civil rights and they get sued for it all the time, don't they?
I tend to think that our courts come down too far on the side of enforcing the freedom of private citizens to make their own choices, but what else is it when, oh, someone sues because someone else didn't hire them because of some "protected" status? Certainly our right to speech and our right to assemble is even more firmly and clearly (explicitly!) given in the Constitution.
I don't think that other private citizens have the right to take that away simply because they aren't the government.
Not that they succeeded, but the point is that no one is pretending any other intention but to deny others their right to speech and assembly.
Anonymous said...
Here's a link so that you can collect your $100,000 by sending video proof of the many people who sreamed the "n-word" at that Tea Party protest on Capitol Hill.
Enforcing *against* freedom... or something. I think our courts go too far in restricting individuals.
Oh, and I neglected to mention, I guess because they've become increasingly unreliable and thus irrelevent, that there were numerous media outlets filming this walk through the crowd. After all, it was a historic occasion. Yet no video evidence exists. And no member of the media ever stepped forward and said that he/she actually heard the slurs which, according to Rep. Andre Carson, were screamed 15 times.
Amazing what the media will print as fact.
Oh, poor Shiloh. Who's fault is that, again, if we pulled troops out too soon in Iraq? Would that be the same president that got us into a 3rd war in Libya? The same president that sent boots in by executive order, in secret, 3 weeks before he went to the UN? Uh, what's his name, again?
This post was written in response to this comment in the previous post, which has a url to a YouTube video titled "leftists booing star spangled banner." I'm not linking to that video because it doesn't deserve a link.
I'm surprised at you. What that link does is prove you WRONG. Someone was filming from right in the middle of the anti-tea party protesters, and it was very obvious that they DID hear the anthem being played, and some absolutely DID continue to boo and try to drown out even the anthem. So, accusing people of posting videos and being dishonest about what they depicted is dishonest of YOU, when there is absolute proof available.
Stephanie, your having a keen grasp of the obvious notwithstanding and changing the subject ad nauseam just to gloat, which is fine ie yes, Reps had a wave election in 2010. Congrats! It was in all the papers, tv and the net.
Again congrats and please keep on gloating as it seems to fulfill an emptiness in your life.
I'm a realist, knowing things can change quickly in politics. You may have missed what I already said here a couple times ~ Having grown up in the 60s, never thought an African/American would be elected president in my lifetime so everything else now is just gravy er icing on the cake.
So no, I'm just fine. Having survived 5+ years of Nixon and (8) years of cheney/bush, (2) years of boehner ain't nothin' but a thing. :-P
Also knowing how the election of Barack Hussein Obama put many conservatives in the fetal position Nov. 2008 it's good that you had something to smile about re: the mid-terms.
Again, all fame is fleeting, especially in politics.
After LBJ's '64 landslide pundits said how will Reps recover ... '64/'65 Civil Rights Acts/Vietnam War/Race Riots/'68 Chicago Dem convention disater, RFK assinated, etc. = Nixon elected w/43.4% in 1968.
After Nixon's '72 landslide pundits say how will the Dems recover ... Watergate, Nixon violating the U.S. Constitution every which way to Sunday, Ford pardons Nixon, etc. = Carter elected w/50.1% in 1976.
btw, I voted for McGovern in '72, so I got used to disappointment at an early age, whereas a die hard conservative at another blog grew up during the age of Reagan, who he considered a demi-god, so the election of Barack Hussein Obama hit him like a ton of bricks.
He may still be receiving psychiatric care as we're not too sure lol.
And please Stephanie, continue to gloat as freedom of speech is your constitutional right.
take care
Denying fellow citizens the right to free speech is orders of magnitude worse than making noise during the national anthem or other patriotic songs.
Since Althouse must realize this, my guess is that Althouse's "defense" of the Dems (i.e. that they were making so much noise to drown out the the Tea Party speeches that they could not hear the national anthem) is not bona fide. It is more likely a passive aggressive way of attacking the Dems.
On a totally different topic, maybe Meade could do some posts on gardening. First suggested topic: what is the easiest way to get rid of ivy? Ivy root systems are unbelievable and getting rid of ivy is super irritating and difficult.
Apfelkuchen,
I found this post interesting, first, because you're asking someone who's going on and on with a topic most of us have said he's wrong about. And, second, because it's so clear you don't get any more of this than he does. Here's the post, line-by-line:
Ut, so why do all you Tea types read her blog so faithfully?
Because she's an old school liberal - more interested in ideas than ideology - so we feel comfortable with her even when we disagree.
No wonder you Tea types distrust her.
We don't distrust her. We'll just call her on it if she's wrong about something. She's welcome to do the same to/for us - that's a big part of why we're here.
Why does Vicki McKenna portray Ann as some sort of compatriot?
I don't know who Vicki McKenna is (by that name).
This is all quite interesting.
Very.
You folks are all so confused, at least we libs know WHO we are and what we stand for.
No, we're not - some of us are conservatives, some of us are liberals, some of us are moderates - we're all defenders of free speech, to the extreme, and proud of it. And, no offense but, most libs have no clue what they stand for - if they stand for anything at all - but that doesn't matter because the only real question is "What will you die for?" and while we also know most liberals will roll over for practically anything that reeks of power, we "values voters" and "social conservatives" are all quite firm on that, too.
I know my last sentence will be an opening for a barrage of insults, you all are so predictable, except maybe Ann.
Nope, I'll spare you - See? Totally unpredictable. Ann's predictable in some ways - she's practically a FemiNazi. I'm predictable in others - I'll bite your NewAge head off. But we're individuals. And we're sharing in a unique form of communication and community. Nothing more. We're definitely not confused about what we're doing here, you are:
This is Freedom of Speech in action.
Oh, you skewed the facts again for some silly partisan reason? Maybe you actually believe this?
Dustin said...
btw, it's so funny that Shiloh called Stephanie's argument mere gloating (when it's not... it's a bona fide point about the will of the people today) and then goes on a nutcase gloating spree about the election of the miserable failure administration.
As usual, obnoxious refusal to respond logically.
It is interesting TGI et al AA lemmings rail against the few liberals here 24/7, but when we're not part of the discussion, conservatives still mention our names lol ie C4 must surely be missed when he takes a break from the ad nauseam minutia.
The earlier discussion about the national anthem when conservatives and teabaggers we're arguing over nonsense was somewhat entertaining.
>
ok, here's a Linda Richman topic:
Jimi Hendrix's version of the Star Spangled Banner ~ Disrespectful or not! :-P
Discuss ...
Wingers talk amongst yourselves.
btw TGI, I was rather nice to Stephanie as getting really nasty at a political blog is pointless.
"Governments have powers, citizens have rights. So our first amendment freedom of speech is a limit on our government's powers."
So Meade ... when a bunch of government officials, members of a union of government officials, show up at a rally organized by actual ordinary citizens whoa re not part of the government, and those government officials disrupt that rally with the intent of drowning out the speech of those citizens, isn't this clearly a violation of their oaths of office and a violation of our Constitutional rights?
These anti-Tea Party protesters aren't just regular old citizens expressing a contrary view.
They ARE the government. And we need to punch this fucking government back twice as hard.
Erik Robert Nelson said...
"Wow, Althouse gets lambasted by her own people because she has the guts to be honest. You Tea Partiers are your own worst enemies."
Hilarious. When we call opponents out on getting the facts wrong, we're called partisan and liars. When we call allies out on getting the facts wrong, we're "enemies."
Or, perhaps, we all just like the facts, untarnished by excuse or ideology. When people get things wrong, it's worth correcting them. No matter what side of the argument they're on. Anyone who claims otherwise only demonstrates they're more interested in rhetoric than the truth. And that's bullshit.
Some booed, others didn't. The video that Ann won't link to has the music clearly audible. The fact that anyone would boo is simply foreign to people in most parts of this country.
Not every person in Madison has called me a baby killer when they have seen me in uniform, but enough of them have for me to form my general perception of the people of the city.
I was stationed right in front of the "T" in the large signs to the right of the audience.
I did in fact hear someone Boo-ing during the National Anthem. I did remember thinking that the protesters did get real quiet during that time, but there was at least two distinct voices Boo-ing.
That's the kind of thing that I will remember for the rest of my life and will remember each and every time I hear a Lib whine about their perceived "rights". I will remember how they disrespected our National Anthem.
Q: What's disgusting? A: Free speech busting.
"Denying fellow citizens the right to free speech is orders of magnitude worse than making noise during the national anthem or other patriotic songs."
Steve Koch gets it. Let's keep our eye on the ball, folks - the take-away of Saturday's demonstrations is that one side respected the other side's free speech -even when that other side - the Palin-haters - tried to use its free speech to disrupt, annoy, drown out, and intimidate the first side. The Palin-haters demonstrated that they are illiberal, childish, disrespectful, uncivil, and undemocratic. Some of them even demonstrated their lack of respect for the national anthem and were so intent on booing their opponents that they appeared to be booing the national anthem itself. That is what their idea of democracy looks like. It is repulsive to most Americans.
At least one person on the other side, garage mahal, to his credit, was embarrassed enough by what he observed being demonstrated by his fellow "liberals" and "democrats" that he got tired of it all and went home.
Good move, garage. No, really - good move.
These are lies. You are a liar. No more attention need be paid to you because one must always defensively assume that any statement coming from a proven liar is a lie.
So then, Apfelkuchen. As it has been established that you are a liar, we can assume that the story about your daughter being in the Navy, your Navy Mom group, the feedback your Navy daughter gives you about politicas in the Navy....all this must be taken as lies. As a proven liar, you can not be extended the courtesy of belief that one extends to people who do not lie. You have to provide proof for any statement you make or your history demands that we take them minimally with a very large grain of salt.
BTW: I did not believe any of those statements to start, but would never have said so until you revealed that you are indeed a liar.
The level of vitriol here seems to match what I've found on other blogs, whether they favor the right or the left. Both sides have an apparent inability to acknowledge their own embarrassments, the extremists in their camp who engage in hostility, racism, threatening violence, etc.
I didn't take this photo
at the Palin rally, so I cannot vouch for its integrity, but signs like this do show up at Tea Party rallies.
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=164799016908247#!/photo.php?fbid=10150560754765397&set=o.164799016908247&type=1&theater
And, yes, I've seen equally repugnant signs and behavior at the labor rallies.
Neither side has the corner on civil behavior. And both sides harbor embarrassing cranks, those who would rather insult and threaten to punch than carry on in civil discourse.
I don't agree with most of what Ann writes, but I respect her intelligence and wit. I cannot say the same for many who post comments here on her blog.
