ADDED: In other tree-climbing news:
A tree-climbing bandit attempting to break into a Brooklyn home Thursday died after a branch snapped and sent him plummeting to the ground...

neat, but that's what laser transits are for :)
Gotta love NPR. Even in article about a tree they manage to refer favorably to Jimmy Carter and reference Donald Trump "drooling".
Anyway, cool tree. I'd climb that sucker.
Was there any hugging involved?

Hyperion? Where’s the Shrike and what happened to the other 5 Pilgrims?
I'm going to have to add to my old, "chocolate pudding" example of why progressive ideals, those that expect the best out of people at all times, don't work in reality. I completely understand why they wouldn't reveal the location of these trees. These or that oldest in the world out in the desert.
Oh, please. Hauling youself up a rope isn't "climbing." Those pussies might as well have used a helicopter.
It's nice to see these giants protected and Jimmy gets some credit for it. Redwoods in pictures are so what, just trees. But up close they are a spiritual experience. In the deep off road groves, where the light filters down, the strength of these living and the fallen Redwoods takes your breath away. God is a creative artist beyond anything that man can conceive of. Many of these trees are in the 330 height range.
Never in a billion years would I climb that high.
It reminds me of the video of someone climbing a TV tower. (Shudder)
Not a fan of heights.
Lumberjacks (yes, I know, they're OK) climbed great heights on tall trees with rope and spurs to cut sections of them; interesting to know the heights they reached.
PS Mountaineers are saying, "Only triple digits:?".
As a wood worker and occasional tree cutter, I believe in conservation - truly remarkable old trees should be allowed to stand, unmolested. There are plenty of young trees that will supply us with all the wood we need.
Ditto. We've been sketching, planning, modeling a surprise tree house in the lone 80' pine oak in the backyard for my soon-to-be 7yr old. We finally get all the materials and labor together for this weekend and St Louis weather has other plans.
Throughout the entire affair, though, the main concern has been the ongoing health of the tree. I agree with Tradguy in that being up close to a big tree, let alone a giant, is extremely special, defying description. It just "is".
The end of the video states that the tree is 23 meters taller than the Peace Tower in Ottawa. I was impressed, after converting meters into feet and looking up the Peace Tower (and Ottawa) on Wikipedia.
That tree looks like a good rock climber could easily free solo it (climb it using nothing but hands and feet; no ropes, spurs, etc.) Any bozo can pull himself up a rope.
For much more of the same, only better, red Richard Preston's "The Wild Trees".
The measured height in the video is 115.55 meters or 379.1 feet. 379.3 is within the margin of fraud!
Every time you vote for a Republican another one of those things gets cuts down.
Man, that thing would make a lot of nice redwood decks.
He climbed all that way up and didn't build a fort in the branches. That would have so cool!
Serious woodchipper, video from yesterday.
They cleared out a few acres of woods from the middle of a soybean field (this year it will be a cornfield), dragged off the trunks that could be sold as lumber, and are mulching (for sale) all the rest.
Tree striking back at the same excavator last November video.
Trees love a fair fight.
"Every time you vote for a Republican another one of those things gets cuts down."
And lands on a kitten.
Dynamite? I don't know if I agree with your police work there, Sixty Grit, I'd be usin' shape charges.
