"Protesters Destroy Recall Petitions Against Wisconsin Democrat."

More strange ideas of — to use the Wisconsin protester's catchphrase — "what democracy looks like."

Worst part of this story:

"The policemen who were there, and who were standing in close proximity to these events as they unfolded, did nothing to assist those collecting the petitions as they were being destroyed, despite such an action being a Felony under Wisconsin law."

We, the taxpayers, now work for the tax-eaters. They don't work for us.

The police did nothing huh? Do the majority of cops dream of their kids being cops or do they want something better for them? If the latter, the cops should think about that when they pick sides in a labor dispute.

Ah, one person allegedly rips up a piece of paper and that means all people opposing union busting are guilty.

It was a dumb thing for that person to do. And people should leave the Republican signature gatherers alone.

But it only discredits the individuals involved and is no basis for collective guilt.

You guys want to eliminate collective bargaining but preserve collective guilt - except for yourselves.

Taxeaters is such an excellently descriptive word!

Speak of taxeaters and AL shows up.

OT: Regarding the expulsion of union protesters from Tennessee Senate Chambers, Ron Ramsey (R), Senate Speaker said:

"This General Assembly will not be intimidated by nomadic bands of professional agitators on spring break bent on disruption," he said. "We talk through our differences here. Tennessee is not Wisconsin."

Made me laugh.

Is there nobody in the State of Wisconsin willing to investigate the apparent collusion between the police and the Govt. employee protesters? Will it take a brutal assault caught on tape before someone in authority mans up? If nobody is willing to tell the thugs that they have to respect the laws against threatening, intimidation and violence, then Wisconsin will have brought that shame and horror on itself.

Watching the second video I wouldn't believe a thing that Republican woman says without evidence. They lie. We now call Walker "Governor Pants on Fire" because he has been found to be lying so frequently (doubt althouse would ever mention that).

I very much want to believe that we have an attorney general who will do the right thing but I don't know any longer.

I doubt Van Hollen will act on the lawlessness of Legislative Republicans and the Walker Administration.

The Capitol remains under lockdown and with tighter security than after 9-11 despite the rather clear order from Judge Albert that it be restored to access policies in effect on Jan 28.

He's a complete political hack. Like David Prosser ion the Supreme Court, whose campaign aide said he would work with Walker and Republicans. Pretty outrageous.

Yes, Wisconsin has been very divided by Scott Walker's antagonistic and bullying actions. Expect more such conflicts.

Hey AlphaLiberal: "Ah, one person allegedly rips up a piece of paper and that means all people opposing union busting are guilty." I suppose that when 1 (one) person brings a racist poster to a Tea Party Rally only that one person is guilty? Tell me that happened? According to the MSM and all you lefties out there "the Tea Party is racist". I say bulls**t to your statement - what is good enough for the goose is good for the gander.

So take your sob story somewhere else. I'm not buying it - your HYPROCRISY is disgusting!

Liar. I never said that. NAACP never said that.

There is clearly a strong racist element within the Tea Party. There are mass-produced racist posters.

But you can't reasons with such dishonest people. So fuck off.

AlphaLiberal said...

Proof of what, Moggett?

Proof that paminwi lied when he said the criticism of Tea Party is that they are all racist?

Isn't it his job to provide the proof of his allegation instead of making false accusations?

Most conservatives today guys routinely lie and misrepresent others, even as you pose as holier than everyone else.

Most conservatives today want the 10 Commandments in public spaces but you routinely violate the Ninth:

Left off the rest of the story, there A-Lib:

Rep. Virgil Peck, R-Tyro, said he was just joking, but that his comment did reflect frustration with the problem of illegal immigration.

Peck made his comment during a discussion by the House Appropriations Committee on state spending for controlling feral swine.

After one of the committee members talked about a program that uses hunters in helicopters to shoot wild swine, Peck suggested that may be a way to control illegal immigration.

Appropriations Chairman Marc Rhoades, R-Newton, said Peck’s comment was inappropriate.

Weapons-grade bad joke, bad taste, criticized roundly by those who heard it. No indication one way or another that this guy is associated with the TEA Party, though.

Still looking for evidence of "strong racists element[s]" within the TEA party. Also waiting for evidence of Walker's or the WI Senate's "lawlessness."

AlphaLiberal said...

Lawgirl, again with the lies about violence in the protests in Madison.

Judge Albert disagreed in his ruling where he ruled the Walker Admin has acted unconstitutionally in restricting rights to speech and assembly and when he praised the conduct of protesters.

The police from Capitol police, Dane county, Madison and UW have also praised the conduct.

But, hey, your intravenous drip of misinformation from Fox News out on the east coast is all you need to know.

Do you guys even know about the Fox News video alleging violence in Madison with palm trees in the background?

NEWS ALERT: WE DON'T HAVE PALM TREES IN MADISON*. IF THEY HAVE TO MAKE SHIT UP IT AIn'T TRUE

* - OK, we do have some inflatable ones now, but only to mock the shameless lying shills at Fox News.

so long, liars.

blake said...

EDH,

I'd take your assertions more seriously if you provided links.

You shouldn't. When AL showed up here, I took him very seriously, and followed all his links. Every one of them was an assertion presented as evidence from partisans.

Every. Single. One.

Without fail.

Look at his current assertion that "There is clearly a strong racist element within the Tea Party. There are mass-produced racist posters."

Now, you know if that were even remotely true, there'd be videos of this plastered all over the news. The delusional left paints this as "right wing, corporate controlled media" but if you Google it, all you'll see is some pretty weak tea at strongly anti-TP sites.

But note the disjunction between the two sentences. He first says there's racism in the movement. The he says there are mass-produced racist signs.

He's trying to get people to infer that he has information about the latter which has lead him to his conclusion about the former, without actually saying "There are lots of mass produced racist signs being waved at tea parties, demonstrating racism."

That allows him to weasel out when someone calls him on it. If he can't weasel out, he'll use an extraordinarily broad and vague definition of "racism".

There is no honesty in him.

AlphaLiberal said...

Chip exhibits poor grasp opf the English language:

"Here is some more classiness from the Tea Party ranks:"

From the ranks does not mean collective guilt. It means from a part, an element.

Really, that's an idiotic and dishonest charge. And I think you know as much.

But, hey, can you show us the palm tree grove sin Madison that Fox News broadcast?

blake said...

See AL's latest link for a demonstration of his dishonesty: He takes a joke and deliberately misrepresents it as a serious policy position.

This is a common tactic. As someone who has wasted time trying to entertain his arguments seriously, I advise others to just be aware of that before trying to.

There is NO honesty in him.

Well, I know this is false. And the easiest example is on this very page, where I link to:

Really, gang, when you have to lie to make your point, maybe it's time to get a new point. Lying is just not persuasive.

But the dominant approach from MOST (not all) conservatives today is to lie, lie, lie.

AlphaLiberal said...

Chip, so on the uptake:

Why is it relevant to note that this quote comes "from the Tea Party ranks" except to suggest that it's informative about the Tea Party "ranks" in general?

Because it's the exact opposite of what you accused me of. You said I assigned collective guilt. I did not. I just pointed out a recent event that Althouse will never flag and Fox News will never report.

Part of my hope is that someone from the conservative side will say "that ain't right and people need to stop joking about shooting other people."

And I call you on it and all you do is double down and go after my motivations - another scurrilous technique.

Anonymous said...

So, an alleged person allegedly rips up an alleged piece of paper, allegedly in Wisconsin.

1) The tape appears to be heavily edited, some say.

2) You can rent those police uniforms anywhere.

3) Even if all that is alleged is true, the felonious ripping up of a recall petition for Democratic State Senator Jim Holperin for leaving the State to avoid voting on Walker's Budget Repair Bill rarely happens, and therefor an "outlier" to be summarily dismissed.

damikesc said...

AlphaLiberal said...

paminwi, yes, you are a liar. Or perhaps you are just new to the English language. Are you an immigrant?

From the link you provide:

Headline: "NAACP condemns racism in tea party "

In English, that means "in" as in part of, not "the entire Tea Party movement."

From the same article you quote:
"We felt the time had come to stand up and say, 'It's time for the tea party to be responsible members of this democracy and make sure they don't tolerate bigots or bigotry among their members,'" NAACP President Ben Jealous said ahead of the debate. "We don't have a problem with the tea party's existence. We have an issue with their acceptance and welcoming of white supremacists into their organizations."

Again, I hate to have to spend time on 3rd grade English but this is not the same as your lying charge:

According to the MSM and all you lefties out there "the Tea Party is racist".

Did you graduate from middle school, I wonder? This is a very dumb line of argument.

Professor Jacobson's article hosts the vidio taken by a talk show host: Charlie Sykes.

It seems Sykes let his listeners know that there would be a petition drive. Which is what also brought out the union goons.

From this, I have concluded the TERRIFIED UNION GOONS are listening to Conservative Radio host Charlie Sykes' show ...

And, they just handed him a BONANZA.

HELLO. We live in an INTERNET WORLD. Plus one where Conservative radio, like Fox News, is self-supporting. (And, not on Federal Fund bailouts.)

So, here's my guess. Charles Sykes, ahead, adds traction to this recall effort. Not the other way round.

Robert Pearson said...

In truth, this sort of thing really is a species of "democracy" which is why we don't have a "democracy" at either the state or federal level here in the good ol' US of A. What the Madison squatters and this mob have in common is a resentment of the republic that we are and the ability of the legislative body and duly elected executive to enact laws they don't like.

"Democracy" is about masses, our republic is about law. Democracy is when 500 guys can vote to kill Socrates and that's it. That's why the Wisconsin protesters keep using the word. See Huckleberry Finn and the lynch mob scene. In the book, one "man" with a gun sends a mob off in disgrace. Today, the police in the cited story would have arrested that man while the mob tore and scattered the lawful petitions.

Look for more mobs coming right up, especially if The Messiah loses in '12.

AlphaLiberal said...

Lawgirl, you're right. I was thinking "you all" in the general sense and didn't know about you specifically.

And I based that on your FALSE charge of thuggishness by union protesters in Madison that was not supported in court testimony nor in the ruling from Judge Albert when he declared Walker's restrictions on speech and assembly to be unconstitutional.

Carol_Herman said...

None of us have crystal balls into the future. But looking at this episode reminds me that the Tea Party People have scared the living daylights out of the democraps!

And, what we're seeing ... weak police responses ... MAY have some sort of effect down the road, IF there's another Tea Party Rally. (With the Republicans in control of the House, I happen to doubt there will be anything like what Obamacare brought out.) But that's just me.

On the other hand?

It's just a matter of time for citizens, themselves, to come equipped to rallies ... to land some heavy weights onto the heads of goons. The police will have their hands full calling ambulances.

Oh, yeah. And, this would be true whether the media boys show up with their trucks. Or not. Because enough people have cell phones ...

That this "incident" did not go unnoticed.

I think "Alpha Liberal" is a real misnomer. It should "Gamma Liberal" or something even lower... He spouts leftist vitriol from the echo chamber, with no evidence and endless assertions. The thing about the palm trees was discussed ages ago and disproved. It was *never* claimed to be in Wisconsin. That clip was in the context of showing a number of leftist rallies in a number of states, and was never supposed to be in Wisconsin.

Geeze.

I guess that fact that cling to such flimsy, made-up "evidence" is a sign of how ridiculously weak their positions are.

I think any liberal who brings up the Koch brothers, for example, should be immediately tagged as a ineffective trolling idiot, and ignored.

AL,

You put quotation marks around your italics, which would imply those were the speaker's own words quoted in the story.

Your's is actually a quotation of the summation of the reporter's lead paragraph.

It's not clear if the representative simply said "that might be a good idea to control illegal immigration" following the committee's discussion of shooting hogs from helicopters, and the reporter paraphrased and added the rest for context -- and controversy (an old reporter trick) -- in his lead summation.

Much more of a one-off remark the legislator was chastized for by members of his own party, not something he seriously proposed.

That's why I like the links.

Thanks.

Topeka — A legislator said Monday it might be a good idea to control illegal immigration the way the feral hog population has been controlled: with gunmen shooting from helicopters.

Rhoades said he thought Peck was joking, but added, “Hopefully he won’t do it again.”

The video is one more example of the thugocracy the lefties want to install (keep?) in Wisconsin. Worse than tearing up petitions is the blatant attempt at intimidation by the union thugs who are trying to discourage people from getting to the table containing the petition materials. The union and lefty thugs have a right to demonstrate but they should stay away from the Wisconsin people who are trying to exercise their right to petition.

Even worse was that the police let the union and lefty thugs get away with voter intimidation. Shameful. Yet one more (dramatic) reason that public employee unions need to be abolished.

It is telling and shameful that lefties next to never condemn this thuggish and undemocratic behavior by their comrades. The Dems are the ends justifies the means party.

Chip S. said...

A question for the lawyers in the group: Even putting aside the attempt to destroy one or more pages of the petition, would the behavior of the union reps constitute voter intimidation if this were a polling place instead of a petition-drive location? It seems clearly intended to deter people from signing. Are there laws explicitly protecting the right to petition, in this sense of the word?

It would become very interesting, if union thugs decided to dump mail trucks.

Carol Herman: "But I don't think they can steal US MAIL." The woman who is running the recall campaign against Jim Holperin in Eagle River was on the radio this morning. She said that the opposition had approached postal carriers and asked if they would dispose of mail coming to her home that had completed petitions inside. (She was using an envelope that would be easy to distinguish). Remember, postal workers are unionized also - so I think some thought this would be easy to accomplish. The recall group approached the postmaster and was told it would be taken care of. I guess, all she can do is hope that is true.

Point of info: I am making call from Madison to residents in that area to ask if they will support the recall so someone can come to their home to get a signature rather than them coming to a public place and be harassed.

Then they switched back to Madison, Wisconsin to continue followup questions re the union protest there. That segment of the clip was clearly labelled "Madison, Wisconsin".

I was in my local post office. There was a dime on the floor. So I picked it up and moved it toward the clerk. He said NO WAY WOULD HE TOUCH IT! He said the post office does sting operations. With hidden videos. And, if you're caught pocketing money that has fallen on the floor YOU ARE FIRED.

Did I think this was true? Yup.

So, I don't think a postal operator will purposely steal and destroy mail. It's not worth losing his pension over.

A statement I first heard a cop make. At traffic stops (back in the old days), people would keep a $5 bill by their license. And, hand their wallets over to the cop. Who had stopped them for a speeding violation.

Yes, cops used to take small bribes. And, then a few got caught and lost their jobs. Lost their pensions.

So, hearing that someone wouldn't want to lose their pension sounds like the truth to me.

Union thugs making it difficult to sign petitions? I think this particular scene was a response to Conservative Talk Radio Show's Charlie Sykes "invitation" to come and sign petitions. Where the union responded with thugs ... to a radio talk show host's offer that went out over the airwaves.

Police, in general are becoming very nervous now at people who just video tape them. Given how many citizens are carrying cell phones with cameras in them. The bigger worry is held by individual cops.

Especially when an event goes viral.

What section of Wisconsin state law addresses ripping up a recall petition, and what is the penalty?

Willy said...

It just goes from bad to worse as I browse this blog by a law Prof. If you watch the video, the petition that was "destroyed" was blank. It might have one signature at the top. And it's still legible it seems. Also they have plenty of blank forms underneath the torn one and on the other clipboards.

While I don't condone these sorts of actions, it really is a weak and misleading post. The word "petitions"-- plural-- isn't even supported by the video. The other implication is that signatures were destroyed. The word "petitions" doesn't tell you their BLANK petitions. And like I said, the video basically shows ONE-- SINGULAR-- petition ripped.

Plus this is the kind of video that could easily be faked. You don't know who did the tearing or what actually happened. Why someone wouldn't do THAT would they?
