It is not the job he hates. It is the work. Community organizers hang out in restaurants and coffee shops, churches, and offices. All they do is yak, yak, yak.
As a state and US Senator he was a house plant. He just sat there and looked nice. No work.
Being president is work. Hard work. Something he has never done.
Obama's detachment has been a topic of discussion for almost as long as he's been in office. I think he enjoyed the first few months, and then after that just shut down.
Do you mean that Obama will suddenly realize that there is no way but down from here? Maybe he sees another way to greater power? But you are right that a man needs to feel that he is accomplishing a goal to enjoy his work. Our trouble with Obama has been that he doesn't see a safe and strong USA as his goal. Obama sees a weakened and threatened with chaos USA as his goal. So my guess is that he is a very happy camper.
At least we aren't having to read any more articles about how Obama thinks the American people have become ungovernable. That was a really odd moment in time.
Do you mean that Obama will suddenly realize that there is no way but down from here?
Oh, I see it so differently. Obama will love being ex-POTUS just as he loved being President Elect Barack Obama. He will be able to make speeches, travel to places in the world where he is adored, write more memoirs, and make lots of money.
I don't see Obama as a man who loves power. I see him as a man who loves the trappings and pontification.
Is there any evidence that Obama has ever worked hard in his life? Other than having his campaign staff ferry him around to all 57 states? Is there any evidence that he is a deep thinker? He seems very shallow and lazy to me.
I try to recall a President who acted more often than not like he liked the job. I fail.
The unrelenting stress and spotlight of being President has always made me wonder why anyone would seek it. I sort-of think that it's the case that friends ("friends") push a person to run and suddenly you're President thinking Oh, shit! I only did this to please them. Now what!?
Reading that quote, I sense a fan-girlish breathlessness in Althouse's question, with all those parentheticals evincing an elaborate empathy with Obama for what he had yet to experience.
Or was it cruel neutrality, a coquettish inteviewer technique designed to get him to drop his defenses?
Why would any of this bother him? Lefties don't care if they bankrupt the country. If it happens they will rationalize that such emergency demands we tax the rich (which in their usage includes the middle class) to ameliorate the suffering. Either way Obama wins.
Obama enacted the largest government giveaway in two generations, and the only people pissed he doesn't give a shit about anyway. Well, maybe the poor old people, but so what? We all lose some freedom, and future generations will have fewer opportunities. But no lefty cares about either of those issues compared to having government control of the economy firmly established.
I think that what Obama knows is Chicago and the system that he was a part of the movement to fight, mentored by Bill Ayers, who still really wants to get back at all the high muck-a-mucks who do/did not appreciate him back when.
So, yeah, he really does not have to do much; the goal is just to plant seeds for "the people" to gain power over City Hall in time.
Obama will love being ex-POTUS just as he loved being President Elect Barack Obama.
Clinton's the one who really loves jetsetting around the world and partying with hott chix. Carter loves saying gloomy things about the Middle East -- he's gloomy like Al Gore.
We don't hear much about Bush, jr. these days. Does W. still spend his free time riding his mountain bike and cutting brush?
Clinton's the one who really loves jetsetting around the world and partying with hott chix.
I imagined many world leaders loved it when the Clinton party bus came to town. I imagine that Obama is really not all that fun for world leaders to hang around, because he probably just wants to pontificate and that is especially tedious when you have to wait for translators.
But as an ex-POTUS, Obama will get to stay in posh hotels which will make Michelle happy. He'll still get enough fanfare to feel important. People will pay to sit in an audience and listen to him, and he won't have to negotiate anything or answer questions. He'll get to oversee the development of his very own library.
I really think ex-President is the job he has wanted his whole life.
I don't know if he hates his job. I don't think he's working hard at it. I know his performance on his job is lousy. Really lousy.
I didn't vote for him and he's worse than I though he'd be. Not because he's too left wing. Because he's incompetent. He's not up to the job. Problems are building up like a log jam. He hasn't dealt with anything of any consequence effectively. The best thing he's done so far is drink a beer with a cop and a race baiting professor from Harvard.
We joke around here a lot and most of us think Prez Obama has not been up to the job. However, let's be clear - the economy has never been this bad in my lifetime [I am 58 years old] and it is fair to say President Obama wasted 2 years on a horribly devised Stimulus package and his 2,000 page healthcare abomination.
The president and his advisors are stuck in a clueless bubble. The American people will start rioting unless the administration & Congress spend 110% of their time fixing the economy and restoring our confidence in the future.
AJ - Obama couldn't get a clue during the clue mating season in a field full of horny clues if he smeared his body with clue musk and did the clue mating dance.
I may say Obama's a lousy president in a humorous way, but I'm not joking. Just when you think he can't get any worse, he proves you wrong. Unfortunately.
Freeman Hunt: "Sorry, Obama. No leaving until 2012"
Not a moment before, not a moment after.
Just think, we could have had Hillary who would have _revelled_ in the kind of problem that just overwhelms poor Obama, who's too sensitive, too _good_ for the sorry hand he's been dealt.
He came into office as a teachable moment made flesh ... only to realize that his moment wasn't what he wanted to teach.
Adapt to the political landscape, argue principles, be broad minded but firm...
...but don't adpot the language of protest, deep seated bitterness (somone somewhere has got money we need to redistribute and much of the Left's foolishness
I am reminded of a cartoon put out when Obama took office, the stack if the IN pile was huge, and the OUT pile was tiny and Obama's saying Oh NO with a bewildered look on his face.
Clinton love the job I can't remember where I read it, but Clinton said he'd wake up angry every morning. He wasn't talking about the year of Monica, specifically, but he said Hillary did, too.

You wouldn't ask him if he thought Mika Brezinski was a real piece of ass?
And this is back because ...
You think he hates this job?
I do too. I think he likes the perks and the power.
But the hard -- very hard -- work of being POTUS?
I think he hates the job.
And since he has never *had* a real job for longer than a few meta4ical minutes ...
Why did those people vote for him again?
It is not the job he hates. It is the work. Community organizers hang out in restaurants and coffee shops, churches, and offices. All they do is yak, yak, yak.

He was always a front man uttering what others wrote, and he still is.
It's the others that I focus on.
Obama himself is a complete incompetent, a fact that is more than obvious to everyone that has ever worked in a real job with real professionals.
Obama's detachment has been a topic of discussion for almost as long as he's been in office. I think he enjoyed the first few months, and then after that just shut down.
It is odd, that after two years in office, he still does not seem real.

He acts as if he hates it.

I bet he looks forward to someone writing his story about being president.
Nightmares of my Press Secretary
our false consciousness is frustrating for him.
Hey we never promised him a Rose Garden.
Wait a minute.....
Do you mean that Obama will suddenly realize that there is no way but down from here?

Obama thought that he could just put his feet up on our desk and have the czars take care of everything.
Then the world intruded....
I try to recall a President who acted more often than not like he liked the job. I fail.
Clinton reveled in the job, yes.
Reagan loved it.
The Bushes liked it.

Maybe he should join a union?

He went to Facebook
BTW - I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Blogger for keeping their awesomely antiquated commenting apparatus in place. Upgrade? Why bother!

Don't go encouraging him to resign.
Then we'd have President Biden!
Sorry, Obama. No leaving until 2012.

Indeed, just like Reagan did ...
Power to the people! ;)

What does thre UN Secretary General do?
Always pontificating to someone somewhere while sort of
invisible. But a grand pooh bah, to be sure, with no one keeping score.
I am reminded of a cartoon put out when Obama took office, the stack if the IN pile was huge, and the OUT pile was tiny and Obama's saying Oh NO with a bewildered look on his face.
What does the UN Secretary General do?
He presides over the monthly condemnation of Israeli Jews.
Its in the charter, I think?
Clinton love the job

And, regarding the suggestion that BHO could return to writing, well, he already quit that, to do other things too
Yeah, apparently before he even finished his first book.
