"What did you want? attention? congratulations, i know you. i also know who hitler, ted bundy, and michael vick are."

Maybe serving lion tacos wasn't such a great idea.

Years ago, I took my sons to a restaurant, and one item on the menu was baby loin ribs. My younger son said "Oh, no! That's terrible!" What's so terrible? "Baby lion ribs!"

People eating lions? That's a reversal of what usually happens.

The strangest thing I ever ate was snapping turtle, caught fresh that afternoon in a lake in Alabama and cut, cleaned, and cooked by my grandma. It was really good, actually, and I got to keep the shell. I was six.

Has this been blamed on Palin yet?

Hasn't been blamed in Palin, but the last paragraph attempts to tie it to Tucson. Typical.

Reminds me of the Marlon Brando / Matthew Broderick movie, The Freshman .

The plot involves a restaurant serving endangered species. Except they're not.

I used to like grilling shark steaks, as sort of a human revenge thing.

I certainly don't feel any worse about a non-endangered lion than I do about the pig that was in my last taco.

Look up!

She's "new age" that way.

Your daily links at Althouse aren't as important as you imagined.

I saw this a few days ago and didnt think it sounded too terribly good, I read somewhere that lion tastes pretty gamey. However if it pisses off complete morons such as Tricia Rider Kachymers I would swing by and pick up a couple of them. Sadly, Arizona is a few states away.

That's gonna piss Althouse off.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to eat lion meat, unless they were some kind of primitive savage who believed that they could take on some of the lion's power by eating it. There's a good reason that we mostly eat meat from herbivores -- because it tastes better. Meat from carnivores is reputed to be very gamy.

I'm really sick and tired of watching lions killing little baby wildebeests, for no apparent reason other than they were born on the wrong side of the Serengeti. How do you like it now, lions?!

Last year an article about 3 new lion cubs at the Bronx Zoo. We went that weekend. Oh baby, they are the greatest. I want one. I"d like one as a pet. Of course, later it would eat me. That's what lions do. Lion gotta eat.

Con man gotta con. Oops, there, it's Obama's fault.

Hey, makes as much sense as Palin/Tucson.

I do love those cubs.

They should serve the giant cats in the same order in which Appple introduces it's latest version of OS X. So this week Snow Leopard is on the menu. Yummmm..

But, maybe its fitting. Lions thought they were on the top of the food chain, and now they are humbled. And how did they get to be king of the jungle anyway? By exploiting the workers, by hanging on to outdated imperialistic dogma.....

There used to be a restaurant in town that, once a year, would have "Big Game Month" They served lion at least once. I had some. Not bad.

It took humanity a long time to reach the top of the food chain. Truly, it's best not to give up that position.

Years ago there was a restaurant in Chicago that was known for serving game from all over the world, especially Africa- elephant, lion, giraffe, and other species. They were in business a very long time.

People from all over the country came there to dine. This is nothing new- times have just changed. BTW, in Africa they eat this stuff.

Bart Hall (Kansas, USA) said...

Having eaten non-trivial quantities of lynx, I'm not sure why anyone would pay big bucks to eat lion, other than for bragging rights.

From the big-cat farm's perspective it's a good thing, since they share the diaryman's dilemma of what do you do with all the young males.

Keeping lions is not cheap, and if they can sell some of their surplus animals -- ones not suitable to keep as breeders -- at a fancy price to help cover their expenses, I say great.

If you wish to eat tasty carnivores, go for the gators (farmed), or, when you can get it, black bear, which is really an omnivore fond of berries and small rodents.

Well, the American Indians ate Pumas, so did the mountain men. Many mountain men said they were the best game ever for eating. Of course, back then they were difficult to hunt because men hunted them. Few caught them, though. Seems they were smart enough to really fear humans, back when humans hunted them.

Now, of course, nobody hunts the Catamounts in most states, do to regulations by city people. Therefore, the cats now kill humans.

As to farm raised African Lions, I'd rather folks buy and eat the surplus than they escape and eat me.

Peter said...

Er, sorry, that was due to regulations.

Funny thing, about US, lions, ie Puma, Catamount, Mountain Lions, in thirty+ years as a hunter I only actually saw a couple, although many saw me. I could tell by the tracks they did. Those cats are like crows. You'll hardly ever see a crow within range if'n you're carrying a shotgun, without the gun, they're everywhere.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

It really isn't a great idea to eat carnivores.

They just don't taste all that great (except maybe for non mamalian types like birds, snakes or fish). Although, I hear that you can't tell the difference in some ethnic restaurants between cats and chicken :-P

There is a reason that we eat herbivores.... not carnivores.

I'm sure lion tastes awful. We don't eat carnivores.

Michael said...

"The meat comes from a farm in Perris, California, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles."

I think they should release the remaining lions, if any, into the wilds of California. They would be eaten by the mountain lions perhaps as tacos.

woof said...

"I'm sure lion tastes awful. We don't eat carnivores."

As pointed out before, except the reptilian kind.

I've eaten alligator and rattle snake. Having had many pet turtles, I won't eat turtle. Frogs legs are delicious, friend and dipped in garlic butter.

Another reason we don't eat carnivores, they're impossible to domesticate (except dogs).
