So how as it that Reagan was able to clean Mondale's clock in the second debate?
Considering that Ronald Reagan (the President, not his worthless-on-his-best-day son) bent his Democratic opponents to his will, eliminated the double-digit inflation bequeathed to him by four years of Jimmy Carter, and laid the ground work for US victory in a Cold War that had already dragged on for 35 years, all while allegedly descending in Alzheimer's, he must have been even greater that I had realized.

RRjr is right only in that Alzheimer's is a chronic disorder that takes decades to manifest.
But he's wrong in several respects.
The 1989 head injury may have been a far more decisive factor in its progression, especially as it was undiagnosed for a time.
More, despite clear memory lapses, he was, even so diminished, smart enough to best Mondale and keep a creative team around him. It suggests he started from a significant intellect, and had much to lose before it became clinically apparent.
Plus, RRjr is full of shit. His surgery wasn't performed in AZ, and no one at the time could have 'seen changes of Alzheimer's' from a burr hole, as the only reliable sign affects the hippocampus, which cannot be viewed that way.
RRjr is so off with that part of the story, and yet seemingly has a clear memory of meeting with surgeons that didn't exist, that perhaps Ronnie should get himself tested for the disorder himself.
Nancy should embrace Reagan's adopted son and denouce her own son.

ISTM the lack of evidence of the surgery Jr is claiming his father has shows Jr may be misremembering. Perhaps Jr is starting to show signs of Alzheimer's.

The problem with Ron Jr. is that he has no credibility. He has never had anything to offer, other than his father's name. He's not particularly insightful, brings no new thoughts, no 'aha!' moments. He would be, in other words, completely forgettable as a person, sans the name.
Except for this: the left, particularly one small cable outlet, loves to use his anti-conservative comments, or any dirt he will offer up on his father as fodder for their own delight. Like kids who love to splash around in the mud, he's popular at the party only as long as he brings the mud. When they tire of him- and they will- he will revert back to his use in the universe. Which is to say....(sound of crickets)....
The argument was always that Reagan was stupid. Well, he was so stupid that he actually changed the world. The current occupant is claimed to be the most brilliant President in our history. Yet his only claim to change is an overrun of bumper stickers, claiming...well...change. Or hope. Reagan actually gave us Change. And Hope. And if he did this with half a mind, I'll take it. Were that we had someone even close to his mindset today.

The CBS affiliate in Cleveland headlined this as new secrets of the Reagan years, so I knew what they were hawking. That's how badly the Left feels it necessary to denigrate Reagan.
PS Pogo, could surgery for the shooting (as well as a surgery (prostate or something) around '85) have hastened it? I've read the more surgeries - with anesthetic, of course - after a certain age, the likelier this is to happen.

He and Patti Davis are among the most disgusting people I have ever encountered. Ronald Reagan, Jr.: not just a whore, which might be excusable, but a father-betraying whore, picking on a dead-man. The great thing is, clueless as he is, everyone has contempt for this sleazy creature. It's absurd, but even if it weren't, what would be the point other than $$$.

James Buchanan had a troubled relationship with his father. A distant and somewhat effeminate man, James Buchanan Sr. had eleven children who strangely enough looked totally different from him or each other. Young James Buchanan Jr. was much closer to his mother Elizabeth Speer a scion of the German family that produced such luminaries as the Third Reich’s Albert Speer. He was estranged from his father for the remainder of his life but strangely enjoyed calling his roommate of many decades, Senator and later Vice President William Rufus King by his pet diminutive of Daddy. Unlike Andrew Jackson who called them Nancy and Fancy. Not that theres anything wrong with that.

How is Ron Reagan not a more attractive man? His parents are Ronald Reagan and Nancy Davis, both very traditionally attractive Hollywood tyoes.

Daddy dearest. I share everyone's low opinion of Ron Jr and high opinion of President Reagan's achievements. But there is this to be said: Perhaps parenting was not what Reagan did best. His children seem very complicated and resentful. There was a lot of Hollywood in Reagan, and maybe it came out in his parenting and not his politics. Thank God.
It just goes to show, you can be a great husband and a great president and not do well with parenting your kids.

Maybe its because My Father at 100 is styled "a memoir" on the front cover Viking thinks it can shrug off this ahistoric history as the semi-demented musings of a Hollywood golden boy whose sans talent career is winding up.
