"'Frank Capra would have had a field day with the life of Gabrielle Giffords,' Robert B. Reich mused..."

"... as guests began to gather for the wedding on Nov. 10 of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and Cmdr. Mark E. Kelly."

The NYT calls attention to its 2007 wedding story.
... Mr. Reich continued his musings on the Capra-like scene. “Not ‘Capra corn’ exactly,” he said. “Mark and Gabby do embody American values. They thrive on doing the people’s work.”

It's so tiresome, I know. But does the New York Times provide fawning, gushing coverage of Republican weddings?

Wow, speaking of skewered shrimp...

I guess thaat Reich "looks up to" men like Kelly who can find the time to divorce their wives to marry cute congress women while going around as one of NASA's space shuttle drivers. He is a real John Wayne with true grit and all. We all have our idols. Reich himself would look normal size at the Under the Table exhibition.

When do we get to stand Robert B. Reich up against the wall and shoot him?

Are we all tired of the term "public servant"? As if, they are overworked and underpaid. Let's put that meme to rest.

I assume Giffords was one of many rich and bored individuals who decided she'd run for office.

There are plenty of examples of that: Jane Harman, Darrell Issa, Ted Kennedy, Mark Warner, Herb Kohl.

None, that I can think of, deserve to be revered [yet] but I guess we can still hope.

Reich uses that phrase, "the people's work", as if he had worked for Communists some time in his life. I wonder where.

PS The Frank Capra thing will kick in if Mrs Kelly makes anything like a full recovery.

PPS Good one, Palladian

That wasn't very civil of you.

And what difference does it make if you stand him up or just have him sit on a tall chair? Do you also hate the vertically challenged?

Reminds me of the argument that Teddy did penance for Mary Jo by "serving the people" for the rest of his life.

Yes, I remember when fatty Rush Limbaugh used his syndicated TV show to routinely mock shorty Robert Reich (which was routinely pronounced RYSSHHHHHH by RUSSHHHHHHH).

Word verification: norids.

“I had dated some big players, but they weren’t really nice men...

There is not a single one of these stories where the woman isn't slyly bragging in one way or another throughout the whole piece.

Tea Leoni should play Gabrielle Giffords, if there is a ever a movie.

Oh, now. It was a nice story even if "people's work" is a weird way to refer to an astronaut.

And tradguy... You don't know if he left his wife or if she left him. She might have left him or started an affair when he was gone all the time. It happens you know, particularly to people who "deploy."

Cmd Kelly It teaches you not to sweat the small stuff.

Whoa.

I'm glad they tried to keep that in perspective in their married life from the beginning.

Little did they know.

Hey now that his wife got shot in the head it is the perfect time for Cmd Kelly to try out for American Idol.

Giffords WORKED at her job and she had already introduced a bill to CUT congressional pay...

She spent nights on the Mexican border with ranchers to better understand their position.

I know, its hard that you can't come up with a republican congressperson who does that but really how is that Giffords' fault?

She WORKED at her job and Kelly WORKED at his; as an astronaut he was a fighter pilot before that. I guess they don't 'work' either.

Since none of us know the details of his divorce, couldn't it be just as easy to assume his wife cheated on him?
