Althouse stop trying. You won't get the ratings up until you post about sex or Palin.

Oh hell. I starving myself so later I'll be able heartily to tuck into my Norwegian mum's boiled cod, potatoes, and asparagus.

chuck b., your place is so serene!

You should see what happens when a bird lands on the deck. Not so serene then.

Ants are scouting out your home on Google Maps/Insect Edition as we speak. All they want is a warm place and a slice of Meade's Deluxe pizza... even left overs are acceptable when it gets this cold down in the colony.

Love the windows, but doesn't the peripheral glare bother you when you're focused on the screen?

I am so pleased to see we have the same table / window setup and the same computer keyboard setup. It makes me feel, somehow, closer....

And if that's a hand-turned wooden burl bowl behind the Mac, it's really spooky.

Somehow it doesn't bother me here, though sometimes I do put a blanket over my head and the screen (to edit photos). Maybe it's the northern exposure, the dark ceiling, or the fact that the table is 6 feet back from the windows.

Ann - what do you think of that Ball of Whacks? Would it be worthwhile to get one for the kids (ages 6-13) this Christmas?

Looks a lot better than bedscape with 3 Yorks would.

Probably the last. The Blonde's desk is right by the window and the glare from the setting sun, especially this time of year, is hard to take. I'm about the same distance from our window (we have different computers because we need different stuff on them) as Ann is from hers and I don't have as much of a problem.

Use this link if you want to buy the Ball of Whacks. I think it's pretty cool as an adult desk toy. For a child, I think it would be a nice, calm thing to play with, especially for a thoughtful, quiet child. I think a lot of kids would be disappointed if that was their main present.

I also like the Creative Whack Pack.

Ann - thanks for the review. I just bought both through your amazon.com thingamajig.

More impressed with the "ribbed paper plate" looking plate - two extremely held high thumds up.

Hey Bevis, just wrote "ribbed" in the comments? Heh, heh, heh-heh-heh-heh, heh.

Oh happy day: the amazing BALL OF WHACKS makes an appearance on one of my favorite blogs! (I'm a long time reader, and occasional commenter.)

The Ball of Whacks is my creation. It's a set of 30 magnetic design pieces that form the gorgeous rhombic triacontahedron. Comes with 96 page book.

But you can build many other shapes as well. See the 1' video here:
http://creativewhack.com
but buy it through Ann's link because Amazon is cheaper.

By law I have to say that it's for 14 and older; however, many of our customers are 8-10 years old. FYI: get it while you can, we sold out our 2010 production.

Thanks Ann also for the kind words about the Creative Whack Pack. It's also available as an iPhone/iPad App. http://j.mp/cwpap

Here are 2 FREE PROMO codes at iTunes for your readers
E6K7MW6YJ9WJ
J43T69MXTFR9
(first to redeem gets them)

Good luck to all.

Note: hope my pimping doesn't seem too shameless, but if Ann linked to one of your products, you'd probably do the same.

Uh, that's the old definition of "red" there.

How long before the Northern Blizzard captives usually come down with cabin fever. Is that the day they fly south with the other snow birds? A High Speed Train going south would get you caught by snow drifts like the Donner pass party, anyway.

While I was busy writing, the Man Himself showed up like Santa!! What more is needed? But I will post what I'd written anyway, to say this:

Two Whacks are better than one.

Two create more options and allow whack gaps to be filled when single pieces go missing. Although loss of individual pieces is not a big issue, since they like to stick together, are easily recognizable and resistant to vacuuming.

Not to echo but affirm, they served as secondary, stocking gifts at the M home two years ago and are still in service. With Creative Whacks added last year. Both recipients use them to think, relax and play. Up and down time for the brain.

I can't give you an Amazon link for that. That's a plate from the Dansk Rondure Wheat pattern. You'll have to Google your way to a replacement service or resale thing to get them. They are nicely reminiscent of old-style paper plates.

@Palladian Nice tablescape. Love the image on the computer.

I love the lamp, Palladian. It's fun to enlarge pictures like that and look for details. Like there's an old-fashioned matchbook. Are you smoking, or do you use it for some purpose like loosening the caps on tubes of oil paint?

Thanks! I'd suggest you put up an Althouse Amazon link for it but I checked and they don't sell it on Amazon, they just suggest an external website.

"It's fun to enlarge pictures like that and look for details."

That's my favorite part of people posting deskscape photographs!

"Like there's an old-fashioned matchbook. Are you smoking, or do you use it for some purpose like loosening the caps on tubes of oil paint?"

I use them to light incense, though the other day I smoked my pipe, an occasional winter ritual.

Technically, von Oech is an inventor (link), though he may also be a designer if a design patent was filed as well.

We need more inventors!

I received a standard utility patent for the Ball of Whacks design: U.S.Patent 7,247,075. I wrote the patent application myself, and spent 2+ years dealing with the USPTO before getting it in July 2007.

Actually, I consider myself an author/consultant (best known for the book: A Whack on the Side of the Head).

Here's a photo and short post when I put a Ball of Whacks on Khrushchev's grave in Moscow:

"Two Whacks are better than one."

Is there any way to improve on MamaM's "wisdom"?

Hush, ladies...

Sit back and get the laugh you deserve.

Not much else in it for you. ;)

Penny said...

Sorry, Mr. Ochs. Just had to do that 'cause I see that MamaM has some spunk to go along with her whatchamacallit.

On a more serious note, if we were half the community we think we are, we'd be pre-paying for a Whack for our favorite lost son, Crack.

This post makes me sad that I didn't make pizza today -- too many apples to process. So I have future apple pies to look forward to. But OTOH, I decided my newly cubicle-employed son might like a Ball of Whacks ... so it all works out.

jungatheart said...

@ Roger, great idea for a pic. I've ducked and covered a time or two, myself :)

MamaM said...

Sometimes, Penny, as you well know, things happen! Creativity begets spontaniety, laughter and more creativity.

Believe it or not, what we purchased last year to add to the two sets of Whacks already in use was not the Creative Pack mentioned earlier, but a pair of X-Balls. which works with the Whacks.

Roger's site also lists Y-balls, which I'd not seen before but will be ordering for this years socks.

I love the Ball of Whacks. Putting the X and Y balls on my wish list.

Maybe someday I'll post some photos of my paper ball design.

The genius thing about Ball of Whacks is that it works for both the right & left brained.

As a right brainer the red ball is like 3D doodling.
