I got annoyed while researching charity ratings today. What is this obsession with overhead? There seems to be this odd assumption that in the non-profit world, all dollars spent on actual charitable goods or services are equally effective.
It's effectiveness. That's what counts.
If some charity has a bunch of overhead but is extremely effective and makes a tremendous difference, it is a better charity than one with no overhead that blows its money on silly things.
I could start a charity tomorrow with no overhead at all that collected cash and then threw it into the city drainpipes in case poor people might be hiding in the sewers. I could call it SAID, Sewer Aid. It would have no overhead at all; every penny would go to the cause. And yet, you'd be a fool to donate to it.
Say, have you seen the Annie Lennox video, something about merry gentlemen resting. Here is a host that is not Youtube and without the soul-crushing advert. (The comments at YouTube are characteristically dark-hearted and ignorant.)
Pomegranate is in all of a sudden. The Blonde even tried some pomegranate popsicles when she had her dental surgery (swelling is finally down, thankfully).
A split pomegranate was a symbol for a woman's external genitalia.
Merry Christmas, Troop! Thanks for the laughs (at my expense)!
Freeman, don't give money to a charity - give it to actual people. It lets them know there are good people in the world - but, if you can't go along with that, give it to the U.S.O. where you know it's needed.
If I had it, I'd be slyly handing out gobs of money dressed as Santa.
"Charity is killing your whore daughter who goes out with infidel Hindus."
For some reason that doesn't bother me right now. Probably because I'm glad they kill each other. Yea, I've got the Christmas Spirit!
Pogo,
Thanks, and I echo your thoughts - except for towards Meade:
"Given charities' averse effect on the economy, their own economic inefficiency, the great inefficiency of the charitable tax deduction and the disinclination of the very rich to give charitable donations to the poor, it is clear that the charitable deduction should be ended, as should the tax exemption for charities' income, the tax exemption on their real estate and their other benefits from the public purse. Since excessive charitable activity is economically damaging, such activity should no longer be subsidized by the remainder of the economy."

Wait a minute!
I think I saw Sarah Palin's face reflected in that glass of juice.
It's a Christmas miracle!
I thought you were on a cruise ship with no internet Troop?
I see one hand shadow feeding a rectangle to another hand shadow.
I leave tomorrow. This is last licks.
So to speak.
I leave tomorrow. This is last licks.
I keep seeing tweets tonight from Lee Lee's. Is that your wife tweeting or is that you incognito?
No that's her. She is tweeting our trip till we leave. She has quite a following I must say.

Charity ratings should be more sophisticated.
Charity isn't so complicated Freeman. The Prophet Muhammad taught: link. I was enlightened on the Boston subway last night.
"Charity is killing your whore daughter who goes out with infidel Hindus."
Wait, that wasn't on there. Maybe that was on a poster in their house.
Having the glass of pomegranate juice that close to the edge of the table seems kind of Risky to me.
No, Trooper, yesterday was Festivus, so it would have had to have been a Festivus miracle.

I can't tell if my pomegranate tree is dead or just lost all its leaves for the San Diego "winter".
Merry Christmas Eve Trooper and all you guys. Don't get any pomegranate on you.

I'm sure Troop would want to know that.
Wishing:
1) A speedy recovery for the Blonde, edutcher.
2) A joyful cruise to Trooper and his beloved.
3) Sweet memories of Father to comfort Freeman and family this first season of his passing.
4) A still and quiet Holiday for our Hostess and Meade, with the earth resplendent under its snowy mask.
5) Royalties for Chip, whose work seems to have been lifted by Annie Lennox.
6) Healing for Beth's dear family, recovering after the fire.
7) A very happy Christmas to All the Usual Suspects at Althouse.

He's been a very, very bad boy! (LOL!)
Happy birthday, Jesus.
Your friend, AllenS
Hey Freeman, see?:
This is what you do at Christmas!
Critics say the homeless would be better served if donations were made to one of the many area charities.
And I still say I know what to do for me better than anyone else.
Feliz Navidad, Crack.
Here's to the healing of all wounds past, and may you make from them a joyous noise.

The surgery was a while ago. She's just getting over the after-effects.
Many thanks!
Pogo, you forgot me on your list of Mary christmas.
Must of been a mistake.
Freeman, we are of like minds on charities, and Martin Hutchinson over at "Asia Times" is thinking OUT OF THE BOX.
Charity should stop here.
It's a must-read article.
Here's a not so little teaser...

Titus, here's a little gift for you.
That's an exquisite specimen of surrealist imagery. Bravo!
