A shopping reminder.

Remember, you can painlessly show some love for the Althouse blog if you do your shopping beginning here:

I really do appreciate it!

AND: Special thanks to whoever bought the Humminbird 898c SI Combo 7-Inch Waterproof Marine GPS and Chartplotter with Sounder. You gave me 51 dollars. And thanks too to whoever bought the cock soup. You gave me 51 cents... and a laugh.

AND: This is a pretty nice sweater somebody picked out for their guy.

Something occurred to me today. If you're directing a movie that's set in the 1970's and features full-frontal nudity, you can't just hire actresses and start filming. You'd have to allow time for regrowth.

Hey there a lot of "sissy" stuff on Amazon.. go ahead try.

The update helped. I didn't know if it was like a 5-cents-per-click thing or if you work off commission. I'll use your link in the next couple weeks when I buy a new camera lens. You'll get between 20 and 50 dollars depending on if I yield to frivolity and get an image stabilizer.

I'm getting a percentage, which varies by category and by the volume I'm sending them. But right now, it's 7.5% for most things.

Meade said...

Hey, Lem is right! And they're not all DVD's of movies starring Sissy Spacek!

btw: About that fishing GPS... doesn't Sarah Palin do a lot of fishing? Well, if so, thanks Sarah!

That is a very nice sweater. $98 clothes me from head to toe, with $20 left over for dinner, but if I got that sweater for Christmas I would keep--

Ann! I'm not going to buy anything if you keep scrutinizing all the transactions. Because when a camera lens and edible panties roll through on one transaction, someone's face is going to be red.

Cashmere sweaters are best worn without a t-shirt, imho.

Coketown, I'm just seeing a big list of everything that was bought on a single day. I can't tell what was bought with what. Plus, I won't know it's you.

"Painless love?"

Oxymoron alert!

jungatheart said...

Althouse, so that fisheye lens attaches to your everyday camera?

It's amazing that the camera is $250, but the lens, $880. Yowzers.

Do you have a wide-angle lens?

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

The last time I visited my sister I couldn't find a clean cup to drink out of.. I got her some Tumbler cups.

Ann Althouse said...

"Do you have a wide-angle lens?"

Other than the fish-eye, I don't have anything wider than a 24mm lens, which is a lot less wide than I thought it would be (and the inexpensive zoom that came with the camera and goes down to 18).

This looks great!

Ann Althouse said...

And yes, the fish-eye goes on my Nikon digital camera.

jungatheart said...

Thanks for the info. The fisheye is pretty cool, but I think a regular wide-angle would be more useful for me.

cock soup?

jungatheart said...

Alright, let's clear this up, once and for all. Do we call you e or ed?

Ann Althouse said...

@Deborah Don't get the fish-eye unless you love the distorted look... our you want to take full-sky pictures.

Clyde said...

Peter: Google "merkin."

Penny said...

"cock soup?"

Duck is an acquired taste.

jungatheart said...

Yes, that's what I meant...the fish-eye is a bit too particular for general use. I can see getting a lot more use from a regular wide-angle.

On the other hand, your sunsets, etc., are gorgeous with just your regular camera. You're not using a wide-angle on those are you?

Palladian said...

I have the Nikon 12-24mm lens, and it's great, I'd highly recommend it.

"On the other hand, your sunsets, etc., are gorgeous with just your regular camera. You're not using a wide-angle on those are you?"

That's the Panasonic camera that is in those Black Friday links I did.

Palladian said...

And I again want to encourage people, after they buy through Amazon for Althouse, to consider buying one of my inexpensive, beautiful limited-edition prints.

jungatheart said...

Thanks, Palladian, good to hear.

Hows about a link to your art? There is one photograph in particular that I've been meaning to order.

coketown said...

Deborah: Many brick-and-mortar camera shops (and there are several places online) have lens rental programs that I highly recommend taking advantage of. You can experiment with the whole range of zooms, apertures, brands, etc. It saved me from investing in an 85mm f/1.8 that I realized is just really impractical for me. Plus you can play around with distortion lenses without having to commit!

Palladian said...

deborah: Link to my sketchbook above. Here's a link to my photographs on Flickr. I print those through a similar process as the sketches and if you're interested in one of those, it's the same price and ordering process as the sketches.

Thanks for your interest, and thanks to Althouse for tolerating my art flogging.

Ann, If I already have stuff in my Amazon cart but search for, say... cock soup, thru your link, will everything in my cart be credited to you or only the soup?

Triangle Man said...

Oh Jeez. I forgot about your Affiliate program when I bought the JL421 Badonkadonk Land Cruiser Tank. Catch you next time, OK?

Triangle Man said...

@Palladian

It would help speed up shopping if you tag the images as "sissy" or "not sissy".

Palladian said...

My images are multivalent, TM. They exist in a superposition between the states of "sissy" and "not sissy", and each purchase of a drawing collapses the wave-function and causes the decoherence of the superposition which creates a branch-point into two separate but unlinked universes where the drawings exist in one state or the other.

jungatheart said...

lol TM and Palladian.

Penny said...

For those who wondered, Palladian prefers you use math for payment.

Wide angle lenses are weird. You can take shots that extend the breadth of the image, yes, but the idea is to get right down to the blades of grass and take in the whole sweep, or right up within inches of a statue and take in the whole room, with everything being in focus. Their beauty is that they can put the viewer smack right into the picture. But they're tricky. They can distort wildly. Most photographers are retisent to crawl right up to their subjects. Their real beauty is expressed with full format cameras, and those are for the pros.

I think the trick is to work out the angle of the shot and to check the corners to make sure you are not including a bunch of unwanted junk.

I got my hands on the Nikkor 14-24 2.8 and I am far from mastering its Jedi ways. It is heavy, and a bit much for my entry-level skillz. One night Karen and I and a teenage boy were messing around with it using a model yacht for a subject. The lens did splendid things with some of the images, made the boat look real, even though we don't know what we're doing. Would you care to see the photo set?

My most useful lens is a fixed 50mm 1.4 On Thanksgiving I took a a very nice set of photos with no flash at all and no tripod. It is also very light. I passed off the camera to complete novices and they managed a few really good shots with it too.

Chip Ahoy said...

Would you like to behold the joys of the 55mm 1.4 super fast lens, Nikon's secret weapon for low light situations?

These were shot in ambient tungsten light. The white balance and aperture were set and the camera calculated the shutter speed.

Here's a friend of mine, Clovis.

Here's another friend, Trish

Here's a little boy who climbed and jumped all over the place and actually sat down for a minute. Adorable, or what?

This was taken under fluorescent light, backlit with a speed light flash. The flash is slave to the camera's built-in flash which does not contribute to the image. It's chocolate-orange ice cream wot I made.

Chip Ahoy said...

Apologies, that should be 50mm, 1.4 not 55mm.

Thanks for the reminder. I always forget I can do that.

I doubt if my purchase of two, not one little truck sets brought in much money. I received the trucks yesterday, and they are very, very small trucks. Oh, well, they'll make some kids happy.

Only the cock soup.

Thanks in advance if you do delete stuff from your cart and go back and find it through my box!

Yeah, but do not buy it through that link. Damn, Michael! Use the box!!!

Humperdink said...

Just ordered an Ipod 4G through your link.....I trust you will see the credit.

I hope this doesn't push you over the "tax-the-rich" benchmark of $250K.

That GPS/Sonar combo cost me more than my first boat, motor and trailer over 50 tears ago. My 7 year old unit died last month, and I'm really lost without it in SW Florida. I've been very frugal this year and decided to let loose a little bit this time.

Ann and Meade, you're welcome.

Mea culpa.

The comments for that watch are pretty funny. Though seriously, if you actually had the money to buy that why would you be using Amazon?
