Royal wedding in the offing.

Do you care?

Reaction?
Lovely. A ray of light in this somber world.
I don't care but don't begrudge the British their sentimental amusement.
It's actively annoying. Phony. Irrelevant.
Boring. Tedious. I don't care.
This is the one I'd vote for if I even cared enough to read this far.

Imus on the Royals Sep 4, 1997 ancient transcript.

He expressed a similar sentiment this morning just now.

It's a damn shame that the lovely vbspurs isn't here to cover this one.

A royal offing in the wedding would be newsworthy.

I wish the couple well. There aren't a lot of successful marriages in his family, maybe this will be an exception. Hope springs eternal.

The Brits are touchy about the royals, but understandably so, I believe. I think a royal wedding like this is definitely something unusual and cool even in the modern world.

If we're not careful, they could become all too common.

No one cares what I think, being only a disembodied "voice" on the Internet and a Commoner, but what the H3ll? I’m of Irish descent, and am a “Republican” in both the Irish National and British political sense…but if the Royals want to hitch one of their offspring to some other sprig of the British Upper Classes, well OK. I just pray:
1) The “Prince” isn’t as stupid as his jug-eared, in-bred cretinous father, and therefore some purveyor of Upper Class Elitism, masquerading as “concern” for the Planet. Global Warmening is a hoax, and Prince Charles is a hypocrite and an idiot, interested in preserving his class’ prerogatives, whilst limiting the Commoners ability to climb, socially and materially. Global Warmening is his way of preserving Gstadt, for the “Right Sort.”; and
2) I pray the Princess doesn’t decide that she, too, must adopt some noble cause a la Diana and rush about the Globe, “helping.” There’s nothing more ludicrous than some in-bred Upper Class Tart wearing a dress and moving with an entourage that could feed a Third World Province for a year AND sweep up all the mines in the region, “worrying” about the plight of the “Little People.” All without the slightest regard to actual realities on the ground….legal, economic, diplomatic or military.

I don't care. But my wish would be that society wouldn't care about this sort of thing at all. The sad reality is there's huge business for celebrity weddings and such. I'd much rather it be about actual royalty, who have an actual tradition, than be about the celebrity of the week here in the states or the pseudo-royal status we give to more long lasting celebs.

Joe,

When the zombie apocalypse or EMP happens, watch how quickly the Brits cling to their royals. "The castles shielded our bodies, while they (the royals) shielded our souls." etc etc.

My great-grandfather was born at Windsor Castle in 1846, and he grew up as a playmate of the future Edward VII. I lived for 20 years in a nation of which Elizabeth is also Queen.

The great thing about monarchy is that the sovereign is vested with certain powers best kept out of the political arena. In 1975 the Queen declared that her Australian Government had lost the confidence of her Australian subjects ... and was thereby dissolved. She sacked a sitting government and ordered an election.

Consequently I am pleased with the approaching nuptials as well as the prospect of King William V and his heirs.

Now, if only we can get that dithering idiot Charles out of the way before his mother dies.

Elizabeth is already, at 84, the oldest British sovereign, but she must persist until 2016 to become the longest-serving one ... a record held by her great-grandmother, Victoria. I hope she lives, like her mother, to 101 and buries her dolt of a son.

What was once unremarkable is not remarkable: William, like his father Charles and his grandfather Philip, serves in the British military. The tradition of military service among our nation's leadership broke after Vietnam.

Now, if only we can get that dithering idiot Charles out of the way before his mother dies.

While serving both in the Royal Navy and the RAF, that "dithering idiot" qualified to fly a Chipmunk basic pilot trainer, a BAC Jet Provost jet pilot trainer, a Harrier T Mk.4 V/STOL fighter, a Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft, a F-4 Phantom II fighter jet, an Avro Vulcan jet bomber, and a Spitfire classic WWII fighter. Charles is also a qualified helicopter pilot.

Bart -

This seems to be the only reason his mother has been clinging to power for so long.

A toast to the queen, to a very long life, and a new world record! Go Elizabeth!

Kate, not that I've paid a lot of attention, seems nice to look at and that's all I really care about.

First, I will confess that I'm a Charles sympathizer and I like
Camilla. There, so bite me.

Second, I've always been a bit of a royal watcher. Don't know why, just found them interesting.

Third, I would be disappointed if Charles never ascends to the throne. Isn't there something unmotherly keeping him from it? Something er, ummm...castrating? I don't approve.

Fourth, that Imus piece is funny. He's excellent at droll, dry wit.

PS, I like and appreciate Elizabeth.

Oh please ScottM, the Royals will just use it as an excuse to Lord it over the People…Remember, “Suuu-preme Executive Power coooomes from a mandate from the Masses…” not some Zombie Apocalypse.

I agree FLS, if ONLY Clinton had allowed himself to be drafted…or if ONLY Mooch-elle or Barak had served a term in the US military, even as JAG officers….unlike Bush ’41 (USN) or ’43 (USAF/ArNG)…or even that horrific POTUS Carter (USN)…Heck even AlGore was in Saigon, for a spell….

Don't forget, we Americans have our own forms of royalty. :-) ..bruce..

And I might add, FLS, that though Charles has commanded a warship (Minesweeper) and was a qualified pilot, that no more makes him qualified to be the “head” of His Majesty’s Government than any other Swabbie in the RN…and the fact he is some Tory Grandee espousing “Noblisse Oblige” or the “White Man’s Burden” in opposing economic advancement for 90-95% of the planet’s inhabitants really sinks him in my poor Irish Commoner’s view.

Getting totally rid of Lords, Lairds, and an hereditary aristocracy is why we set up a Constitution over here. The vacuum that created their abscence has in many ways been filled with the Super Rich and the Attorneys. But the gutsy, self made fighter is still our preferred leadership style. Oh yeah, Palin was yesterday's topic.

Nice thing about the royal weddings is that they aren't funded by George Soros, as was part of Princess Chelsea of Clinton's wedding.

Say what you want about the House of Windsor, but I do admire Queen Elizabeth and her husband. In spite of their children, they've managed to appear classy.

I was in Oxford during the Fergie wedding and the tolling of all the colleges' bells was outstanding...otherwise, I didn't give a rip then and don't now.

Proof, as if any more was needed, that one can be quite competent in one area while still being a bumbling idiot in all others.

The Queen Mum (now dead) was the epitome of class.

Elizabeth publicly refused to leave London or send the children to Canada, even during the Blitz, when she was advised by the Cabinet to do so. She said, "The children won't go without me. I won't leave the King. And the King will never leave."

When Buckingham Palace itself took several hits during the height of the bombing, Elizabeth was able to say, "I'm glad we've been bombed. It makes me feel I can look the East End in the face."

Charles' career is proof that they should have let the man be career military as long as possible. Yes, more chance to die, but also less chance to get into trouble or get bored. More real work, more focus on reality, fewer stupid statements in public, more wisdom.

I think it's sad that William waited so long to get married; but at least by now he and his bride should be sure of each other and accustomed to the craziness of public life. I wish them all the luck in the world, and "the best of British luck" too.

I was a 11 when I saw his parents get married and became a Diana fan the next 5 or so years. I remember when he was born, etc.

I think this marriage will be more successful as she has been around for 7 years. Kind of an anti-climax. Charles and Andrew rushed into marriages with shallow women they barely knew. Edward's courtship of Sophie was long like William's and they seem to be doing well. Hopefully that is the key.

I wish them well.

I am pleased and wish the young couple well. They're a gorgeous couple. Also, part of my reason is that I want to see Prince William fill the throne over his father, who I find an ugly, horsey-faced womanizing bore. At least Diana injected some fresh DNA into that family tree with no fork.

The couple seems very nice.

Monarchy, however, less so.

How often must we experience the depravity of the English monarchy and aristocracy before we stop the fawning? We fought a war to disassociate from that institution. I wonder what those men who fought that war would think of our modern obsession.

Palladian said...

"Royalty"? What a hilariously primitive idea.

At least it gives the snaggle-toothed British populace another distraction while their society crumbles and crashes all around them.

It had a fork when the Queen Mother, a former commoner known as Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the current Queen's father.
