Hey, it's Grant Wood-Althouse!

If not for the sky, I would say its a painting. Esp the bushes on the right.

Did you capture the shot with any special effects?

Looks like an old "See America First" style poster from the 40s or 50s.

Very nice.

Are you shooting through a lens on your sunglasses?

Everything looks so rose-colored...

Looks like a photo that Microsoft would use on Bing, or as a wallpaper in Windows. It's lovely, Ann.

I've seen lots of good photos on your blog - this is one of the best.

It's a great photo but it's obvious that the way forward veers clockwise.

That reminds me of a cover shot from Texas Highways magazine.

Professor Althouse continues to veer to the right.

(sorry, I couldn't resist)

Fen: Ann Althouse is very discreet about her technique. I asked what kind of camera she uses and she was mum. Maybe Wisconsin is just ultra-photogenic and surrealistically colored?

Click on the photo and note the text on the right.

Hagar: Thanks! I assumed it was hosted on blogger and wouldn't give that information.

Cirrusly?

You can always click on the photo and get to details about what camera, etc.

The main reason it looks unreal is stuff I did in iPhoto. Very simple moving the sliders a bit. Contrast. Temperature.

Looks to me as if what we see as real is a matter of perception.

The outcome of a "very simple moving of the sliders" by someone with a gift of awareness, an eye for composition and color, and the technical know-how to tweak what is into something more, is part of what leads me to consider the possibility and potential of Higher Power.

True, yet only because of EXACTLY how Althouse chose to compose this picture. The "way in" to this photo is clearly the broader path moving clockwise.

But this is Althouse! Would anyone be surprised if her next shot had Meade peddling in from the left, and getting closer to both her and to us with each successive picture after that?

Penny said...

Ha ha OK, I have to admit...I would be surprised if that happened.

Althouse's vortexes have a decidedly "northern hemisphere" gravitational pull. Perhaps when she and Meade visit Australia next summer?

Ah yes, nothing like a little bit of OZ to shake things up.

I'm a copycat

(similar composition, very different landscape)

What is it about a large swathe of land largely empty of signs of human ingenuity so appealing?

Penny, you are correct that I assumed that the perspective was to the road ahead rather than a retrospective one. I guess I was cued by the the title "Keep Rolling" which implies that there is something yet to come.

Would anyone be surprised if her next shot had Meade peddling in from the left, and getting closer to both her and to us with each successive picture after that?

That would imply that she had left Meade in the dust on the ride and that he wasn't able to keep up. It would indeed surprise me if Althouse had reached the point where she was smoking Meade on the trail. On the otherhand he could have been lagging behind chasing mushrooms or something.

I just learned that Juan was let go on the phone, http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-juan-williams-20101022,0,4294425.story. Shirley at USDA was told to resign during a phone call.

Do not take a phone after a mistake.

Another Althouse-doing-her-impressionist-thing.

Nice.

Since you put it that way...Would anyone mind if I selected the hippie... sitting, stetching out and smiling in the rain?
