In the Fragile Glass Shop...

P1000027

... you need to be careful...

P1000033

... but not about what you say.

Hee...I was recently in a shop in Ithaca that had a lot of beautiful and fragile glasswork...and you did have to be careful what you said. You couldn't say "pot", you couldn't even say "bong"--the shop owner explained that that's considered "paraphernalia." Although you could literally say "paraphernalia." Freedom of speech and common sense--just a couple of incidental casualties in the all-important War on Drugs.

Careful, twoclass. They'll kick you out if you call them anything but "water pipes".

(I see Smilin' Jack slipped in with similar info...)

I want proof of the fragility.

Top photo - beautiful work. Would have liked to see the whole piece.

BEIJING – China tried Wednesday to allay concern about the political impact of its $2.5 trillion foreign reserves, saying they are not a "nuclear weapon" to control other nations and its vast holdings of U.S. Treasury debt "should not be politicized."

China said it twice.

Keep your first-born, we have plenty. But lets see more of that Obama kowtowing.

That fragile glass menangerie is in need of redistribution by a czar. Spreading delicate stuff around is somewhere in the enumerated powers contained in the Kagan/Kenyan Constitutional re-write.

Enough with the museums. I'm still waiting for you and Meade to do a photo tour of Mills Fleet Farm.

Speaking of art . . . Bemidji Minnesota is having a beaver controversy.

Funny to have the Fragile Glass Shop open, next to the streaming (and tied at 0) World Cup game...I'll try not to break anything.

Peter, my daughter is working at the German camp up there. I'll have to ask her for a report...

Here's an interesting piece about the condition of Massachusetts' health care system from today's WSJ.

You could say that the health care restructuring is just like marijuana glassware; everybody knows what it is, and what it is going to be used for, but it's a no-no to say so outright...

Fabulous glass.

I was stopped from taking pictures of glass in Harrod's.

Could have turned into free advertising, no?

Poor Schland. I had to race outside and stop my dog from barking at sad, drunk passersby. I have a feeling tomorrow will be a bit like shuffling through a glass shop for me. Wonder what German for "walking on eggshells" is.

Madison, please get more restaurants on foodler.

Currently, I have like over 500 options.

In Madison there are like 5 chinese restaurants.

This is like so uncool.

Never been a big fan of art glass, but it is pretty.

Peter Hoh said...

Titus, are you in Bangalore? One of the things that surprised me when I was in India back in 1986 was the prevalence of good Chinese restaurants in India -- and not just in the biggest cities.

re: Gaia the Vaginal Beaver

To: the feminists, journalists, and complainants who believe the beaver to be revealing or depicting a representation of a female vagina.

The private part on display is the vulva which includes the vaginal opening. The vagina, a specific internal structure, is not in evidence.

It would seem more honoring if those on both sides of the question of appropriateness would know and use the appropriate terminology.

Lem - oil and Obama.

Maybe when the oil starts reaching the Chocolate City (as per the mayor), people will start realizing Obama's done nothing but stand in the way.

The other Ann in my life has a typical feisty Coulter column posted on her website tonight that takes on the neo-cons who ask for Michael Steele's resignation. She is a hoot.

the Chocolate City

??? Burlington, WI? Hershey, PA? Or even Hazleton PA -- there's a new chocolate plant there too.

Its amazing the things I (an insomniac) could do while in vacation paradise, the Dominican Republic.

It was hard enough figuring the exchange rates.. I'm talking about a sense of standing out.. not blending in.

I could sense people could tell I was not.. that while I was a Dominican I was visiting.. while sober it bother me.. When I was I was under the influence I relished it... belting complete English sentences at the car wash.

The thing is, I can upload only 50 pages a day to blogger when the CAPTCHA kicks in. I can keep going but it's a drag.

I already uploaded hieroghphic words and phrases to a general blog then realized I should have a separate blog for searching specifically. By then few hundred cards were already uploaded to Photobucket to link. I went back to pick up all those addresses. I'm surprised to see how many views those cards are getting over there on Photobucket. I would expect them to be of little to no interest to anybody and so ignored, but some of them already have upwards to fifty views.

LAURA. Now it is just like all the other horses.

JIM. It's lost its--

LAURA. Horn!
It doesn't matter. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

JIM. You'll never forgive me. I bet that that was your favorite piece of glass.

LAURA. I don't have favorites much. It's no tragedy, Freckles. Glass breaks so easily. No matter how careful you are.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

The car wash is a car wash but it is also a stand in for a daytime pickup bar.

People (men) there drive drunk to the car wash and drunker off of it.. they often drive off the car wash to a cabana after piking up.. or being piked up by a young woman.. whichever comes first ;)

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

The "car wash" did business while raining.. you have to be there to see it.

KCFleming said...

MM,
"The Chocolate City" is Nawlins, so referenced by Ray Nagin, Mayor, apres le hurricane.

"We ask black people: it's time. It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild a New Orleans, the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans. And I don't care what people are saying Uptown or wherever they are. This city will be chocolate at the end of the day."

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

The local politics is very big there... People seem to know or are are involved (read, hear criticize) because the government drives a big chunk of their economy.. bigger than here.. then again.. it is still a "banana republic".. they've just replaced it with cheap clean beaches.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

Thanks Pogo.. I thought i might have to google it.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

I must say I missed that "chocolate" quote when it was.. when was it uttered?

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

I'm happy to report that 'freedom of speech' is alive and well.. better than it could be expected for a developing country like the Dominican Republic.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

There is a Current Affairs type of news reporting there where people with their cell phone cameras turn in videos.. reporting government as well as citizen on citizen malfeasance.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

No.. not the kind Obama was asking about during the election.

BTW.. that should have been a signal as to waht we were going to get.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

I like that word.. malfeasance.

I remember it from Fargo.. the way Frances McDormand says it.. in the upper mid west vernacular.

Malfeasance.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

Malfeasance appears to be the worst of the worst... kind of like Bush Gitmo Worthy.. or BGW ;)

The expressions misfeasance and nonfeasance, and occasionally malfeasance, are used in English law with reference to the discharge of public obligations existing by common law, custom or statute.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

I seem to remember Supreme Judge Thomas praising "common law"... common English law.

It seems that not everything common to all peoples is common to all people in the same way.

While this may sound obvious.. I think it is better appreciated while traveling abroad.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

A lot of people may remeber the dark side of the Thomas hearings.. I remember a man speaking honestly and forthrigly about his philosophy of the law.

Thomas told us more about how he would approach cases 'if confirmed as Supreme' than all of the folks nominated after him combined.

The hearings are available on CSPAN.. all you have to do is go back and compare.

There is a story there that has not been told..

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

In the cultural front I wish I could say I want to play something I heard there that impressed me.. I did not.

As far as music is concerned the young culture, the young generation, is not much different from any big city here.

They are listening to their versions of wath we listen to here.. Unfortunately I was not too crazy about it.

Maybe its a generational thing.. it happens to every passing generation.. bla bla bla.

I just get the feeling that this time the rift is humongus.. there is nothing worthy of a listening, musical audience out there today.

Nothing zero zippity do da.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

I'll just play a classic.

El Gran Varon.

It looks like the earthquakes are moving slowly northwest along the fault lines. Riverside better watch out.

We had some out-of-towners in the office during the quake. Pretty exciting for them. :)
