"Chaz couldn't be happier."

"This is an important step in his transition and will allow him to change a variety of his identity documents to show who he truly is."

Chaz, now you look like an insurance salesman from Milwaukee.

Congrats?

I see Cher has "grown" into acceptance. No grandchild. Ever.

Just following in Mom's footsteps of "surgical correction"

Ah, the never-ending fight against biology.

Too bad Cher didn't have the same operation before she met Sonny.
"The Sonny and Cher Show" and "I got you Babe".

It all could have been avoided.

I hope he is a happy man. God bless him.

Sonny was probably the sane one. You should have seen Cher circa 1964. And she, presumably, had custody

Whatever, if s/he is happy, more power to herm. Although it kind of destroys the memory of Cher holding little Chastity while she and Sonny sang "I got you babe" on their 1970s TV show.

But that's okay, my first celebrity crush was Lesley Gore as she appeared on Batman in 1968. Turned out she didn't like boys either.

I feel bad for Cher. Modern technology makes it possible – even easy if you're rich – to indulge in some strange, unnecessary and irreversible medical procedures.

Could be worse, though. Have you seen the trailer for "The Human Centipede?"

I second Tmink, though maybe for different reasons. Who knows. I only wish teh boi in question here peace.

He is not blind to his fate, and it is easy to foretell all. He will throb between two lives, an old man with wrinkled dugs. His fingers will connect nothing with nothing. His vanity requires no response when lovely woman stoops to folly.

The children of Hollywood enter this world with too much baggage.
I feel sorry for her. No matter what she does to her body she will always be a genetic female. The decline of the West continues as that which was straight is made crooked. Reassignment surgery is just one symptom of our fall further into self absorbtion as we get drunk on the wine of our vanity.

Curse the doctor not the patient.

How pathetic.

the judge declared Chaz hung... or something.

No, seriously.. I think its good for both of them ;)

Actually, our insurance salesmen are quite nice looking.

Its not like his infringing on anybody else's rights..

I don't see why he shouldn't be able to be called a man.

Some people want to be called african Americans.. no big deal there.

Alexandro,

Before you worry any more over the decadence of the West, check out this CBC story on forced sex changes for homosexuals in Iran.

You get the "dugs" (had to look that up) removed don't you? Isn't that the point?

A person must be in a special kind of hell to be convinced s/he has the wrong plumbing.

To make this even worse some asshole had to be sure this is in the public eye.

Maybe all men have a little woman in them and all women have a little man in them.. and then you have Chaz, kind of 50/50 split down the middle.

I really don't understand why Ann posts things like this. She just had to know that the majority of commenters would be needlessly cruel.

I'm well aware of attitudes in other countries and they don't change my view. I no more worry over such attitudes as I do when watching anything on television.
The world is the way it is and I only involve myself with things I can change. If someone wants to make changes to their body in such a radical manner they can find a doctor who will mutilate the gift into which they were born.

"I really don't understand why Ann posts things like this."

The name of the game on this blog is discussion or so it seems. No one seems to have a problem with expressing their thoughts or emotions, no matter the subject.

Cruelty? Are you serious?

True story. *points* Stop me if you heard this. One of my deaf friends saw Cher on television and became possessed with her mannerisms and the way she used her hair. He was constantly imitating her, exaggerating her twirling her hair as if it was a mop spinning on a pole, and leaning forward to virtually devour an imaginary microphone. Once, he caught notice of dog grooming tools I had neatly lined up on a shelf in the garage and took them up as props to pantomime a backstage model preparing for the runway, then he slipped into his made up Cher persona and walked an imaginary catwalk. We died there laughing. The rest of the party came crowding at the inside door to see what was putting us in hysterics.

Oh, Chaz. Yeah, him.

She's still a woman. A seriously disturbed woman that has been taken advantage of by twisted surgeons and shrinks. What a sick and deplorable result to be announcing in public. She should be ashamed.

Michael Peterer said...

Skylar that's extreme. You clearly have no understanding of gender-identity issues. This is my first venture into the Althouse comments threads, and I dare say it will be my last. That someone as intelligent, funny and rational as Ann Althouse could attract such a following of the small-minded (with some obvious exceptions) is inexplicable to me.

Lesbian? He?

This is wrong.

Word, Synova. I'm pretty sure I'm 17, and have been for the past 30 years.

I don't know what's going wrong with my body, though. Knees, blood pressure, hair loss -- it's all fucked up.

Well Synova, you know what the French say: "To master a tongue is to live anew" (or something like that: Link.

I hope he's happy. Of course the activist is thrilled. But
sometimes these things don't work out too well.
