Dog whistle politics ... seems to be the standard currency today. Any opposition to Obama is racism. How do Palin and Paul employ the tactic that is more egregious than the Incessant Race Card (IRC for short)?
"Both came out of nowhere".
If I agree with that,I think it is fair to say the same thing about the president. But would Max Fisher agree?
She's definitely got better hair. What the hell is that on top of his head?
No one whose father is in government "came out of nowhere." He's a second-generation politician. It's the family business.
7. They both generate hits on cheesy websites.
What the hell is that on top of his head?
Be nice Beth. Not everyone is blessed with gorgeous locks of hair like John Edwards.
Walter Williams has a nice defense of Rand Paul in the first hour of Rush today.
Slander by association is a basic mind controler's skill. The slowly developed meme is to be that Palin, who is an experienced executive with great communication skills, is like Paul who is a mentally ill cult leader that puts the spotlight on divisive crap that can be used to make the consevatives appear as dangerous, uneducated idiots. The tragedy is that other Palin opponents like Romney and jeb Bush will go along with this attack technique being used against the GOP's best candidate, because it will be used on them next.
Funny, true.

7. They both run and hidefrom the press.
Today, many Americans view "came out of nowhere" as a positive feature in their candidates. While Beltway elites and the punditocracy get nervous and frightened by fresh faces and new ideas.
Traditional Guy.....Help me. I am having a slow brain day. Are you saying that Sarah Palin, the "Hick Savant", is the GOP's best candidate?
On this site alone both DBQ and Beth have made comments critical of Rand Paul's hair. He must have piss-poor advisors not to be doing anything about such a clear liability with the distaff side.
Rand Paul is an intellectual, because he has made an mumber of complex statements about his political philosophy; Sarah Palin has not, so likely is not.
An intellectual with a graduate degree -- should we fear that Rand Paul will inevitbly have totalitarian tendencies?
It misses the important point: both are champions of smaller government. Beyond that they are very different people.
The political discourse lately, especially from the left, misses this main point of the right. This is THE primary political argument and it is talked around like it's just another of many issues. It is THE issue.
@garage:
7. They both run and hide from the press.
How the hell can Ms. Pain do that when an "journalist" has moved in next door, overlooking her house, to write his next hit piece on her? I don't think Rand Paul would put up with that.
"7. They both run and hide from the press."
Unlike the President with his regular press conferences answering our questions.
"7. They both run and hidefrom the press."
1 way Rand Paul & Sarah Palin are like Barack Obama.
Joe McGinniss is going to write a book about Sarah Palin. He just rented a house next door to the Palins. Can you say full blown creepy?
@ Aridog... Do you have a Phd and tenure in an academic field at an Ivy League school? If not, then you are a hick just like Palin and me. And yes she is by far the best candidate the GOP has ready to run and win in 2012 instead of run and lose to open up 2016 for a GOP insider. Who but her could nail Obama on Death Panels and being in bed with the OIL powers that be?
Who but her could nail Obama on Death Panels and being in bed with the OIL powers that be?
How cute. You don't even know when your losing.

7. They both run and hidefrom the faux-press.
fixed it for you.
"7. They both run and hidefrom the press."
Considering one has had the press in her underwear drawer and a blogger camped out in her uterus, I'd say that shoots your silly assed compaison right out of the water.
Both are admired by Glenn Harlan Reynolds, obligating Ann Althouse to do likewise.
Considering one has had the press in her underwear drawer and a blogger camped out in her uterus, I'd say that shoots your silly assed compaison right out of the water.
Who in the press was in her underwear drawer? We know she has never given a live press conference - what was the toughest question asked of Palin? Or Paul for that matter.
what was the toughest question asked of Palin? Or Paul for that matter.
Hell I'm still waiting for Obama to answer a real simple one like when are we leaving Iraq or closing Gitmo. You know the real easy stuff he campaigned on.
Someone was in Palin's underwear drawer? What did they find? Dominatrix stuff?
Yea I'm sure you're concerned when we are leaving Iraq and closing Gitmo.
She's definitely got better hair. What the hell is that on top of his head?
@ Beth. LOL
I said that a few days ago. Looks like a small mammal perched on top of his head.
Perhaps a marmot?
Wow. That does strike me as a little creepy.
7. No one offered them a job not to run for office.
Yea I'm sure you're concerned when we are leaving Iraq and closing Gitmo.
Could care less garage. Just wondering when Obama is going to get around to it. I mean it would be a real simple question some 'journalist' could ask considering how it was a centerpiece of his campaign.
Although I would suspect a devout Obama supporter like yourself would want to know wouldn't you? I mean being all opposed to Iraq and imprisoning innocent people right?
That's ok though garage. I don't expect you to man up enough to admit it.
What the hell is that on top of his head?
at least it's not a mullet.
Traditional Guy.....
Yep, by the standards you cite, I am a hick, too. Most of us are in fact. I am a reasonably well read and well traveled hick, however. I am fairly familiar with Palin pre-2008, by coincidence. Her "executive" record is far less than her PR sound bites. And she quit, short term, both statewide positions she acquired.
If she is the best the GOP has to offer, then we're all like where I live now, Michigan. Smoke and mirrors and not a whits real difference, politically, between Democrat and Republican detectable. All talk, no walk...with hands in each others' pockets to boot.
Sorry, Sarah's gift of gab isn't enough for me these days. If she's the GOP contender in 2012, it may very well be the first time I've skipped voting. I voted for McCain/Palin because I thought she might grow up outside Alaska. I was wrong.
She draws critics for the same reason manure draws flies. There isn't a serious liberal around who isn't delighted with her, trust me.
I don't suppose either of you two leftards recall the flap about her clothing? Hell, I think the WaPo was more concerned with sending a team of investigative journalists to Alaska at the time to get to the bottom of that national crisis, which prevented them from knowing fuckall about a real story like the ACORN scandal.
Since neither of you mentioned the uterus thing, I'll take that as you guy being big Sullivan fans.
Could care less garage. Just wondering when Obama is going to get around to it.
Seems odd you sit around and wonder about when things you could care less about get done.
He's got #2 backwards
#3, last I looked, was supposed to be a virtue unless you're one of the National Socialists
#4 Quasi nailed it
#5 He is, of course
#6 Until they galvanize public opinion

She doesn't seem to be running for anything at the moment, so that slow brain thing may not be just today.

63% of the public wants ZeroCare repealed - that's her doing; it passed the Reichstag over the will of the people through bribery and backroom deals - that's The Zero's doing.
Spill, baby, spill is also The Zero's doing - or do you like the fact that this administration has done nothing for 6 weeks?
You're 0 for 2.
Since neither of you mentioned the uterus thing, I'll take that as you guy being big Sullivan fans.
Sullivan is a blogger.
Still haven't come up with the top 5 unfair questions asked of Palin? Not even one tough or unfair question? That sure doesn't match bleating from Palin or her fans that the ruthless and mean MSM is out to get her.

You would think huh? But She is not running for anything and according to you and them she is so much a non-threat that she should be welcomed to run, yet she is the number one target of liberals. That seems to not follow logically.
Conservatives think Biden is a dolt too and would love him to run for President, but they feel no need to attack him as soon as they wake in the morning. They show no fear of Biden or his rhetoric.
Liberals are either afraid of Palin or are neurotically hateful toward her for some unjustifiable reason. You don't attack people you don't fear unless you are just a hateful bully.

I'll just bet he does.
I wonder if Dr. Paul can see Russia from Kentucky?
So if I did the legwork and researched whether Obama was ever asked or answered either of those questions I would find nothing?
I don't know garage maybe. I mean since they were such important issues during his campaign I would have thought that by now, almost 2 years into his administration it would have made a headline somwhere. I mean the MSM found the time to ask about his NCAA brackets and all.
Ok let me make it easy for you garage, aren't you even remotely curious or is it now that your guy is in office its Iraq and Gitmo is all good?
You don't attack people you don't fear unless you are just a hateful bully.
So Palin is a hateful bully?
wv mroil
7. garage likes neither.
8. Alpha likes neither.
Well, if Ravi Somaiyahimself, plus the comic genius Andy Borowitz and a couple of commenters on Sully's blog say this is so, then I guess it must be so.
One question, though: How is "dog whistle politics," which implies that Ravi Somaiya et al. hear things that the rest of us don't, different from left-wing schizophrenia?
Hostile to media? Isn't it the other way around?
Came out of nowhere? I knew both their names several years before the pravda media started trying to destroy them.
Bagoh20....just my opinion, but I think you are missing the de rigueur strategy of the liberal left. Make a fuss about something, distract folks from reality. The strategy is to distract, simple as that.
It was never more apparent than when Kerry ran in 2004. He was a fraud, but gathered selected veterans around him to tout his good name, while pointing and shrieking at the vets who called him what he was and is today.
I'm a vet, and 2004 is when I demanded the Michigan Democratic Party drop me from their registry rolls. The "Winter Soldier" didn't represent me or anything I ever did or anyone I ever knew did.
Today, I'd really like an honest conservative candidate. I don't see any...or old line Democrats either. So I'm left with no choices. Both suck.
I will acknowledge that putting up with Michigan and Wayne/Oakland County politics makes one cynical.
This really does reflect poorly on the left (i.e. can't discern differences of two public figure to the right of center)
The key quote buried at the bottom (Sorry Palin lovers)
unlike Sarah Palin, Rand Paul’s problem is not that he is clueless about issues but quite the opposite–he clearly has strong views on every subject
So if I said Bill Maher and Al Sharpton were the same and used similar biased sources, I would assume folks on the left would ridicule me.
HD;
I wonder if Dr. Paul can see Russia from Kentucky?
Wait for the SNF skit before you use the line.

Run and win what? That sled dog race?
"Who but her could nail Obama on Death Panels and being in bed with the OIL powers that be?"
Well TG, you nailed that little bit on the nose didn't you. What death panels? The imaginary ones? What kinship with big oil? surely you meant GWB and Cheney..you know of Halliburton fame - the ones who cemented the well that is now spewing? that one?
I'm sure if you keep repeating "I believe...I believe...its silly but I believe" long enough Kris Kringle will appear and make your life even more of a fairy tale.
"I wonder if Dr. Paul can see Russia from Kentucky?"
Don't know, but as someone else once said, Obama can see the Soviet Union from his economy.
@ bagoh2 @ 12:44
Absolutely!!
You read like a total idiot again GM.
"So Palin is a hateful bully? "
She attacks the people making dangerous policy and the press for allowing it while attacking her. That's logical and not at all bullying.
She attacks the people making dangerous policy and the press for allowing it while attacking her. That's logical and not at all bullying.
That's mighty fucking convenient isn't it? One side gets to attack the other out of "principle".
"I wonder if Dr. Paul can see Russia from Kentucky?"
I don't know. But he can definitely see a 20 point lead over Conway - even after all the "controversy."
That's mighty fucking convenient isn't it? One side gets to attack the other out of "principle".
See, there's a difference between our side attacking apolicy, and your side using ad hominem arguments.
So which is it Garage: Is it that you don't know that, or that you do, and are lamely trying to conflate the two?

edutcher said (with his usual charm): "She doesn't seem to be running for anything at the moment, so that slow brain thing may not be just today."
If you say so but what's This and This, too.
There were people who wanted Tecumseh Sherman to run for President, too.
Palin criticizes only policies? "palling around with terrorists". "Obama would take your guns away if he had his way". She doesn't know what's in any policies. She can't even remember the word "energy" or "tax" without writing it down on her hand. You guys are so full of shit. Up to your ears in it.
"That's mighty fucking convenient isn't it? One side gets to attack the other out of "principle"."
Why yes, yes it is. You should try it. It is principled for a private citizen to attack the government, but not for the government to attack citizens as this President does. The last President and the others before him had the class, intelligence and discipline to avoid such foolishness.
OOOh, he brought up the Bush. Thems fightin' words.
It might be worth noting that Dr Paul does in fact have an MD degree and a speciality in opthamology. I am guessing he's a pretty smart guy. And it remains fascinating to me why the liberals have piled on Dr Paul--do they think he might be a threat? Hell--he's still just a candidate. I am much more interested in getting an answer from Adm Sestak about who offered him what to not run against snarlin arlen
Hey Garage-more important shit to talk about (excuse thread hijack)--what are you grilling for memorial day? Hopefully memphis dry rub ribs--I did stumble upon a good recipe--lemme know if you are interested.
"So which is it Garage: Is it that you don't know that, or that you do, and are lamely trying to conflate the two?"
Be nice. Garage just isnt very good at this.
And it remains fascinating to me why the liberals have piled on Dr Paul--do they think he might be a threat?
Put it this way -- legislators should consider the real world impact of the laws they make.
Here, Dr. Paul is
an ideologue
who ignores that his ideology has negative consequences in the real world
in that it allows an entire group of people
to be treated as subhuman
because of an excess of skin pigment.
But, none the less, Dr. Paul may be elected to the Senate, despite his robotic mentality.
FLS--that really isnt much a critique..At least isnt a lawyer nor a former law student--those are major pluses in his resume. Do you have any specifics to support your assertions?
Do liberal ever tire of emoting? It just seems so exhausting to me.
I like Rand Paul :-)
I'm excited at the prospect of having a libertarian in the Senate. He can balance Bernie Sanders - the socialist.
It's like the possibility of a new world - having a libertarian. Someone who will argue for radical individual rights.
Yeah, he's kooky - but, imo, we're all kooky. That's not a good enough reason to not elect him. Is he honest? Is he trust worthy? Does he take responsibility? Does he try to not consciously harm others? Will he work with those he disagrees with?
Those kind of issues are more important to me than whether he is kooky. Where is the line between individual rights and helping those who are in need? I don't know - but I like the idea of there finally being a libertarian. It's like coming out of the closet in a way :-)
Roger
Yea ribs for sure at least one of the days. Need to go see my butcher too, so good reminder. Big weekend for the Mahal family. Brat Fest. Immaculate Heart Picnic. Memorial Day parade. Oh boy!
Shoot me that rub recipe please.
Garage--use your own rub recipe--what I will send is technique :)
Ok now I'm really curious. You have my email!
Do liberal ever tire of emoting? It just seems so exhausting to me.
Seriously.
It is just like dealing with a bunch of hormonal teenage girls.
I heard that Rand Paul keeps a barrel of axe handles on his front porch, if ya know what I mean.
If you're going to have ribs this Memorial Day, ax handles makes a good wood flavor. Just sayin...
Garage--check your gmail
Got it Rog, thanks

I didn't know you were a teenager...that explains everything.
H D...Checking back into Althousia, I see that you are not a Sarah Palin fan. But you must admit that Palin spent her career in Alaska stopping the OIL corruption that the GOP so easly allowed in Bush and Cheney's term while they held hands with King Faisal. It is Obama and Soros that see it as their turn to be enriched by cooperating with with that OIL cartel, not Palin. And surely you know by now that health care reform is nothing more than cost control on wasting money keeping the elderly and disabled alive. You are smart enough to see what they lied their heads off to hide rationing panels in plain sight until Palin alone had the guts to nail them on it in public. I like for a President to fight for me and to tell me the truth... and so far only Palin has offered me those nearly extinct political skills. So she is a Hick? So was Andrew Jackson.
Beth said that politics is the Paul's "family business"
I don't really think that is the case in any normal sense. When we think of political families, we think of positions that tie together.
The Mollohans, father and son, in WV. The Bush's, Dingells, Gores and like that.
In the case of the Pauls, both were successful doctors before deciding to go into politics. In both cases out of a sense of getting fed up with the system and trying to fix things as opposed to looking for a lucrative career.
There is also a disconnect between them. Sr is a Congressman in Texas, Jr is trying to be a Senator in KY. Doesn't seem like Sr can do much to help Jr's chances.
I think if there is a Paul "family business", it is medicine, not politics.
John Henry
WV - Syllao I have no idea what it means but I like the way it feels on my tongue.
He confused "Hostile to Media" with "Media Hostile to Them"
HD--thanks.
I think one of the problems with the perception of the Pauls is that people want to judge them as conservatives.
When they do, they find them somewhat odd.
Judging the Pauls as conservatives makes no more sense than judging your dog as a cat. Your dog probably makes very bizarre cat, totally different from other cats.
The Pauls are liberals (in the Hayek/Friedman sense) or, in more popular usage "libertarians".
They are not conservatives, though they do share some ideas with conservatives. They need to be judged as liberals (a/k/a libertarians)
They make a lot more sense when you do that. The problem then becomes that most people have no idea what a liberal is or what they believe and they end up confused.
Hopefully, if we get some more liberals running, their views will become more apparent.
BTW: The same thing applies to Palin, though she does call herself a conservative. Read her book and you find relatively little conservative in it. But on every other page there is something showing that she is a liberal. Perhaps she just figures it is easier to identify as a conservative since more people understand it. Or at least think they do.
John Henry
BTW: I am NOT a conservative. I see little difference between what we call left and right or progressive and conservative. Both want to use big government to control my life. There are some differences in how, but not many and not significant ones.
I am a liberal. I want freedom. I want government to be as minimal and as decentralized as possible. No govt should do what an individual can do. No state should do what a city can do and the feds should not do anything that can't be done by a state.
Here, Dr. Paul is
an ideologue
who ignores that his ideology has negative consequences in the real world
in that it allows an entire group of people
to be treated as subhuman
because of an excess of skin pigment.
The loony FLS strikes.
Let's cut the shit and get through the stink to the real cause of this constant racist hysteria flogged by the left.
Democrats can't win a national election without a 90% black block vote. To secure this vote, Democrats bribe black voters with quota preference and welfare perks.
Blacks have addicted themselves to these perks at the cost of the destruction of their families, a collapse of their communities in welfare ghettos and the imprisonment of half their male population.
FLS, you're racist rants don't help black people. They hurt black people.
Then again, you don't really give a damn. What a crock!
Nobody believes your racist lies, FLS. Why don't you can it?
The Democratic Party was the party of slavery, the party of segregation and the party of Jim Crow.
Nothing has changed.
To this day, the Democratic Party is the party of racists.
If only the Republican Party would offer something better.
edutcher says: Sarah Palin is not running for anything.
You know what? In a way, I agree with you. She's not running for an office, just for publicity, influence, and the money.
I doubt she could hack actually having to execute policy, and I am sure she knows it. And, yes, I am familiar with what she did do in Alaska, and what she didn't do, before she boogied.
I agree she did pay up her taxes on that lake property she owns, when she got caught.
To me, she's just another chump at the trough.
contrare...sarah is running on empty....no gas in that tank.
The Democratic Party was the party of slavery, the party of segregation and the party of Jim Crow.
Nothing has changed.
It's unfair to say nothing has changed, shoutingthomas.
They've traded in those outdated white hoods for their dapper new purple shirts.
Rand Paul is no racist.
The party of Karl Rove is the party of Lincoln -- nah, doesn't pass the giggle test.
There are a number of honorable Republicans. Unfortunately they are not leading the GOP.
There are a number of honorable Republicans.
Among said Republicans, whom would you number (list, please)?
sarah is running on empty....no gas in that tank.
Riiiight. That must be why your MSM is still wasting time demonizing her.
list, please
I can think of three off the top of my head, but I'll come back with a fuller list.
FLS: Touche! Seriously, I deserved that one. Hat's off, and chuckle, too. : )
I think we should always encourage these comparisons. The libbies get to wallow in their perfect sense of moral and intellectual superiority, and avoid actual exercise of their minds.
