I know it's a trite observation, but "if he was a Republican..." applies particularly in this case. Or rather cases. David Paterson being complicit, even pro-active, in abetting a domestic violence suspect was already betraying some of the corrupt and venal leaders in the Dem Party. And he is a replacement for yet another scoundrel who couldn't make it through his term without ending up a punch line. Now one of the leading "statesmen" in their Party is exposed as just another low- rent cheat. These jokers have a serious problem. Eventually the masses are gonna start noticing the pattern.
It's kind of sad, really. Rangel is a charming, bright guy who came up from the streets, served with honor in the military, put himself through law school, rose to real power and influence and then was distracted by the easy moral code of contemporary politics. Another wasted potential.

That's kind of funny. He was distracted? You know, some folks can do what Rangel did because they want to better themselves and others do it because they know that's the path to power and gaming the system. Anyone who ever had a modicum of scruples and principles wouldn't be 'distracted' by sitting on the ways and means committee while gaming the IRS. A lot of folks walk the halls of power without becoming scumbags. I don't cut him an ounce of slack.
These people are proving that they're just going to have to be gotten to.
I mean, they've created a situation in this country where the laws don't apply to them. They have "ethics rules" they must adhere to, not "laws" that they must adhere to.
We're threatened by laws, with fines and jail time if we violate them. While these fucking corrupt Congresspeople have "rules" that don't even have consequences when they violate them.
Fuck this shit. This 'ain't the America I grew up in.
And then when the ethics committee completes its investigation and admonishes a legislator for violating those same "rules" (not "laws") they refuse to accept any fucking penalty and just "step aside" until the elections are over so they don't have to answer any pesky questions from their co-conspirators in the fucking media.
This is completely unsustainable as a way of governing this country.
It is bound to lead to violence as the people realize they have no other alternative to removing these obviously corrupt officials from their high offices.
If the law can't do it; if the rules can't do it, what exactly can compel these motherfuckers to obey the law?
How exactly is the population they govern supposed to hold these motherfuckers accountable?
They've passed laws that say that if you or I signed these sorts of sworn statements under these false pretenses we'd be hauled off to jail for lying to the FBI.
A goddamn felony.
This motherfucker had better fucking be arrested. A mere stepping down from his chairmanship isn't enough.
Yep, most ethical Congress ever, says Pelosi - so it must be true.
How long has Rangel been a crook - not reporting rental income, using THREE rent-controlled apartments in NYC, "forgetting" to list a half million in assets until very recently?
And he was still untouchable until another member of the Black Caucus finally spoke up and said he had to step down.

It's a step in the right direction, but just one step.
Technically, he's only asked to step down, and Pelosi has to acquiesce, I believe. She better.
A tax cheat(D) in charge of writing our tax laws. I'm sure the eternal investigation will wash it clean.
'I can't let this distract me from my important work.'
The last refuge of a lousy DC crook: 'my important work!'
'Oh! Oh! The poor! I have to help the poor!'

You're right.
'...I have to attend to the pressing work that my constituents sent me here to do.'

Too bad that first step isn't off the edge of a very tall cliff with jagged rocks below.

When is he going to step into a jail cell for tax evasion and illegal use of at least 3 subsidized NYC apartments?
About the same time Satan builds a snowman.

He's a goddamned lying corrupt criminal.
Arrest. Him.
