How many beers a day would Obama need to be drinking before his doctor would recommend "moderation of [in?] alcohol intake"?

Drudge picks out this bit from Obama's health report:

The link goes to this report — which stresses the advice to "continue smoking cessation efforts" (which means he's still smoking, apparently) — and ends:
The doctors also recommended "moderation of alcohol intake."
Considering that there is a great deal of research showing that it is a positive health benefit for a man to drink 1 or 2 beers a day, I would think that a 6 foot 1 1/2 inch man like Obama could easily drink 3 or 4 beers a day without there being an actual negative effect of concern to a doctor.

How much is Obama drinking?

(If you think we shouldn't be talking about the President this way, let's remember how people called Bush a "dry drunk." That is, he was criticized for being a drunk when he didn't drink at all!)

Why does The Guardian hate our President?!

Recommending "moderation of" is completely different from recommending continuation of "moderation in." Reading the original report, I'd say the doctor told Obama that the amount he was drinking was just fine.

Henry said...

And enough with the beer. Real powerbrokers drink whiskey.

Here's a story about LBJ from a very entertaining page on his "Presidential vehicles":

In the early afternoon, the President, with me next to him in the front seat, took his white Lincoln convertible, top down, for a drive around the ranch. It was incredibly hot; the dust clouds made it hard to breathe. But there was relief. As we drove around we were followed by a car and a station wagon with Secret Service agents. The President drank Cutty Sark scotch and soda out of a large white plastic foam cup. Periodically, Johnson would slow down and hold his left arm outside the car, shaking the cup and ice. A Secret Service agent would run up to the car, take the cup and go back to the station wagon. There another agent would refill it with ice, scotch, and soda as the first agent trotted behind the wagon. Then the first agent would run the refilled cup up to LBJ’s outstretched and waiting hand, as the President’s car moved slowly along. (Special Assistant, Joseph A. Califano, Jr)

In Washington, LBJ often had his half-drunk glass refilled with soda so he wouldn't get drunk around the drunks he was manipulating.

Or have you been asleep under a rock for the last few polling results?

Still it IS a silly topic...what is "moderate drinking" 1 or 2 drinks per day, ON AVERAGE? But what if the POTUS drinks a six-pack on Sat. night, is that OK or is that "binge drinking" and who the H3ll cares? Doctors need to just chill out about "moderate drinking."

And if a man wants to smoke or eat a waffle, no big deal...though it's ironic to see a man who wants to tell ME how to run my life, run afoul of the same sort of busy-bodies he supports.

Is it reasonable to believe the doctor was making the recomendation solely on what Obama has reported to him?..

Or is this a republican doctor?

Most of the doctors who practiced at George Washington University Hospital had been attending a special meeting there that afternoon and were only an elevator ride away from the emergency room. Within a few minutes after I arrived, the room was full of specialists in virtually every medical field. When one of the doctors said they were going to operate on me, I said, "I hope you're a Republican." He looked at me and said, "Today, Mr. President, we're all Republicans." I also remember saying, after one of the nurses asked me how I felt, "All in all, I'd rather be in Philadelphia" - the old W. C. Fields line.

I had been on ibuprofen (400 mg) for about 18 months. (hip problem) Over the last couple months I started nausea & vomiting. It wasn't until about 2 weeks ago when I picked up the new prescription and reread the directions that figured out what was happening. Mood change is another side effect, and I now recognized that it did alter my mood. I immediately stopped and am just trying to detoxify my body now. I also went from about 160 lbs to about 140 lbs.

NSAIDs can be bad on their own, combining them with booze can be real bad.

By comparison this is how The Guardian "reports" it.

His health was described as excellent and he does not have to return for another medical until 2012. Obama, who is 48, has 20-20 vision, weighs 179 llbs in his shoes and clothes, and requires little medication. Apart from the nicotine replacement, he uses a non-steroid anti-inflammatory medication associated with physical activity: he regularly plays basketball at the White House.

The doctors also recommended "moderation of alcohol intake".

Yet Liberals believe almost everything the press tells them when the stakes and motivation for the press to stir up trouble is even larger;

like reporting on a President that they hate.

My guess is that O is a piker of a drinker compared to (say): Truman, FDR, Taft, Nixon, LBJ--to highlight a few who were known to enjoy their cups.

Drink in moderation, have regular dental chekups - standard medical advice.
Doesn't mean a person given that advice has bad teeth or drinks to excess. Indeed, a doctor's advice of NO drinking - would be a better sign of some medical condition where drinking would not be advisable (type II diabetes, gylceride blood problems, acoholism, etc,)

-----------------
David - "My guess is that O is a piker of a drinker compared to (say): Truman, FDR, Taft, Nixon, LBJ--to highlight a few who were known to enjoy their cups."

Actually, Truman and Nixon were light to non-drinkers most the time. Both had truly hateful critics that were always trying to cast the two as secret drunks. Their associates have all stepped up and said the accusations were unfair and untrue. For example, Nixon's aide Jack Brennan said the drunk Nixon part of "Frost/Nixon" was entirely false. Never happened.

Past Presidents who were hard drinkers were FDR, JFK, LBJ. Bubba had a few hard-partying episodes - but only one while President - his infamous fall and knee injury when staying with Greg Norman that violated a cardinal rule of drinking. (See note)
None of those guys was a true lush, even with drinking now and then.
For the real hardcore boozer - a leader who was drunk more than they were sober - you are in Winston Churchill and Boris Yeltsin territory..

Note - If you drink, never try to match an Australian drink for drink. They are the genetic fruit of England and Irelands deported alcoholics...who in a survival of the fittest...lasted long enough in Australia to reproduce before their livers failed and who had enough wits about them to be able to drink from sunup to sundown without getting bit by deadly snakes or trampled by sheep and cattle.
Clinton ignored that.
George Bush went out in his late 30s with tennis star John Newcomb and friend for "a few" and promptly got popped with a DWI.
Winston Churchill disliked Australians and never drank with them after they called him the Butcher of Gallipoli. Good thing too - or Churchill matching Aussies drink for drink - would have meant he would have been dead of liver failure long before WWII.

I agree--given the state of the economy, the Administration's agenda, Obama's dreams, and the secret knowledge of where all this might lead to--I'd be hitting the sauce, too.

Remember, Churchill ran the first part of the Second World War buzzed throughout his day. A sherry in the morning, mild whiskeys during the day, and finishing it all off with wine or port at dinner or a nightcap--he found his maintenance level and stuck with it.

And we Westerners are better off because of his habit. I mean, I can't see Winnie in his condition ever losing to a weird German vegetarian teetotaler. It most likely made him more creative and able to take risks.

Heck, a couple of beers gives me otherworldly courage. I can only imagine what I could do if I was sauced up for THREE years at work, running a war...

Seriously? I hope you were joking.

We don't need to see the inside of his colon, but it is important for the public to know that the President of the United States is in good physical AND mental health. Debilitating diseases or degenerative diseases can cause anyone to do less than a good job performance. I would think it to be of prime importance that the President be at his best state of fitness so that he can make the best decisions.

Second. Some physical conditions, if they were hidden, could lead to possible blackmail situations.

We should also know that the President, and ALL Congress people, are paying their fair share of taxes and not gaming the system.

After all, THEY are the ones who make the onerous and ridiculous tax laws that all of us "little people" have to abide by. We need to know that they are not above the law......even though it sure seems that way lately.

I like those sports but he could kick my butt in basketball, so whatever.

What is the problem here?

I have a hard enough time doing some of that without being President of the United States.

I think there is no fault from the POTUS, a man I disagree with on many issues, concerning his ability to keep up his health in the most demanding job in the USA.

I'll be sorry if the president gets cancer, or has a heart condition, but I don't see how I need to know that. We have a clear line of succession, that is what is for. God forbid he keels over, but if he does, we know what to do.

As far as blackmail, like what? "The President has HIV!" "No, I don't--here are my test results" (doctored, pardon the pun).

And as far as his taxes; first, I don't really care all that much if he pays them--I mean, I do, but I care a lot more about the way this or any president taxes us, spends our money and distorts our republic. Whether he chips in his share is penny-ante by comparison.

And in any case, you can have a special tax-inspector appointed just to review the president's taxes to make sure he's in compliance. If your response is, "he'll muscle that person," then he can just as easily make sure sanitized returns are published, too, right?

I think we need to downside the presidency from being soooo important that these things matter so much.

I don't see why the long-term health consequences of anything Obama does to himself is very important, given the fact he cannot be President for more than 8years.

Furthermore, it would be pretty stupid to suggest that someone cannot be a good President while drinking more than what a doctor would advise, given the fact that Churchill and FDR both have martinis named after them, and given the fact that the advice from the doctors in the newspapers tries to have us believe that if you drink enough to get a decent buzz you are a "heavy drinker" with a "problem."

What would concern me is if the President is drinking so much that he is not always of sound mind. Obama is only President for 4-8 years. He asked for the job. If he is ever too drunk to function, he cannot properly function as President until he sobers up. I have no problem with Obama getting a bit of a buzz on. But he should wait till he is done with his term or two terms beforfe he gets all-out hammered again.

What 3 AM call comes in for which there is no contingency plan?

I've got four...could you go to once a year?

Ann, the term "dry drunk" was not used by anyone to imply that W was drinking, but only to suggest that he brought the addictive impulses of an alcoholic to other interests. Specifically, when W got "saved," like an alcoholic, he went in fully. The point behind the criticism "dry drunk" is simply that addictive impulses are transferable to other areas. When W 'looked into Putin's heart,' he was criticized for relying too strongly on religion as a basis for understanding the Russians. A dry drunk has substituted one addiction for another, in this case, religion.
