Oil: future world shortages are being drastically underplayed, say experts

From Today's NYT, an article on how the cost of additional troops is "constraining" Obama's options.

One senior administration official, who requested anonymity in order to discuss the details of confidential deliberations, said these concerns had added to the president’s insistence at a White House meeting on Wednesday that each military option include the quickest possible exit strategy.

“The president focused a lot on ensuring that we were asking the difficult questions about getting to an end game here,” the official said. “He knows we cannot sustain this indefinitely.”

Oh, boy, here we go.

This picture is just aching for Chip Ahoy animation. A beaver? A flock of geese? An alligator? All three? Waiting...

I had a dream last night that I was in The Wisconsin Union in Madison and was about to cross the street towards Memorial Library.

I was mugged by little gypsy kids who stole my key to my beamer and all of the leashes off all my dogs-I had two rare clumbers, a cavalier king charles, a yellow lab puppy in the dream too.

I ended up sitting in the library mall with all of the dogs but couldn't keep them with me because they were off leash.

I could not get away and drive because the little gypsy kids stole my beamer.

I was holding the cavalier and lab puppy trying to carral my rare clumbers when the little gypsy thieves hopped on my rare clumbers and had whips and started riding and whipping the rare clumbers like horses-down State Street.

I woke up screaming and had two rare clumber heads looking at me.

Thank you.

My mom and sisters are at their annual Lutefisk and Lefse dinner at a church in Deforest.

I hate lutefisk but love the lefse.

Oh man. I was looking through our copy of "The Helga Pictures" this morning. This photo reminds me of so many of those images.

Obama needs an exit strategy whose timing will coincide with the increased costs of his health care initiative. Remember, not one DIME added to the deficit?

I also had a dream last night, Titus. When I fall asleep on the couch late at night, whatever is going on in the background on TV, often works its way into my dreams. Last night my dream was like an infomercial.

Two computer software guys were trying to sell me programs that would miraculously have a minimum of $10,000 added to my bank account at the end of every week. I woke up because I knew it was too good to be true.

Photoshop that photo? What, do you think I'm crazy?

Sourdough culture collected by yours truly on Maui a few years ago. A rather lengthy post on the joys and hazards of bringing about excessively whole-wheat loaves.

Bread marketed as whole wheat is usually made with less than 25% whole wheat flour, and that flour is less than 100% of the original grain. Manufacturers divide out the grain components then recombine them. Grain contains fat. If whole-wheat flour really was 100% whole grain, then there would be a fat component listed on the side of the package. There isn't, so it's not. For actual 100% whole wheat, fat and all, you must mill the grain yourself. I provide this information as a public service.

(1) Great photo!

(2) I apologize, in advance, but I just have to do this.

(3) Sorry about that. Here’s your palette cleanser.

(4) Regarding dreams . . . I really envy you guys. I used to have great dreams, too. But lately, I’ve been in kind of a slump.

What the heck kind of town does Althouse live in?

While trying to settle an argument about the Texaco-sponsored Metropolitan Opera broadcasts (1940-2000, when Chevron took over Texaco, then three more years under Chevron), I found the Radio page from the Wisconsin State Journal for February 8, 1942.

Along with programs such as "Allis-Chalmers Goes to War", was the Dane County Socialist Party, fifteen minutes at 2 pm on WIBA, sandwiched between the NBC Chicago Round Table, and H. V. Kaltenborn. But this ad was what really startled me:

UNITED For VICTORY!
Listen to the
Communist Party
Broadcast
Over Station WIBA
AT 11:00 A. M. TODAY

As Mr. Churchill once put it, "If Hitler were to invade Hell, I would find something good to say about Satan".

After all, it is Wisconsin we're discussing.

Oddly, the US Army regarded the Soviets as their most reliable allies (including, presumably, Ernie King). When they said they would do something, it was done - on time. Because of this, and the less than stellar performance of such others as Charles deGaulle, Mark Clark coined the acronym YBSOB to describe those who did not meet the same standard of performance as the Russians.
