"Oh Millard Fillmore/You're like Happy Gilmore/We all should chill more/Like Millard Fillmore..."

Composed by Seven Machos in the "School kids learn to praise Obama" post after Peter Hoh said:
The teacher(s) only get a pass if they were working on a song that included the names of all the presidents, with student composers suggesting verses for each.
And Miller said "kinda like '50 Nifty United States'," causing Seven to snark, "It's 57. Up your game!"

And Peter continues to serve up moderation:
Until I get proof that these are not some Freeper spawn doing a satiric skit, "Public School in the Age of Obama," then I'm going to have to assume that they are plants.
Yes, we won't be fooled again. Remember when this faked us out?

Some things are just too good/bad to be true.

I don't know about anyone else but I don't recall any President who has been elevated to such a celebrity level like this guy has.

Maybe its just me being a history buff and all but I was a bit disturbed by the Che like campaign posters of Obama during the primaries, toss in the near orgasmic frenzy his crowds exhibited and now we have the childrens singing his praises. Sorry but the symbolism I'm getting from this is a bit too Dear Leader for me.

Now I know the usual suspects will respond with rolling eyes and clucking tongues but I tend to take things at face value and its served me pretty well these 42 years.

One other thing, my folks gave me a piece of advice that I am sure many other parents did with their childrens were growing up: You tend to be judged by the company you keep.

I look at the company of Obama and that tells me quite a bit about the man and it isn't good. I think it is also telling that he gets praise from Gaddaffi and Castro while Brown and Sarkozy get the finger. Take that for what its worth.

There was Reagan. So great that he was elevated to celebrity status *before* he was President

a. My very own tag! Yippee!
b. At some point the encomia will become cloying. For me it happened at the acceptance speech with the fake Greek columns. For others the gorge should just now be rising to their throats. For Maureed Dowd - she drinks vinegar just to counteract the corn syrup she gulps down daily from the White House.

Wasn't there a 19th century serial in the Strand about two endlessly chatty female relatives of Millard? The Fillmore Girls, I believe it was known as...

Yes, it's cloying and cringe-worthy. To be clear, I don't think children should be singing songs like this -- in or out of school. The "red and yellow, black and white" line jumped out at me last night. Yeesh, what were they thinking?

I just want to add context to my "plant" remark, as it is a reference to something that happened in another thread. When discussing some of the offensive signs at the 9/12 rally, a commenter here demanded proof that those holding those signs were not liberal plants bent on undermining the protest.

For a video of children being exploited by both the right and the left, see Jesus Camp.

But all of your wingnut readers think this Bush worship is fine and dandy.

downtownlad, don't you ever get tired of the "but but but Bush did it too!" Yes, we get it. Bush is Obama, Obama is Bush, they're the same so nobody gets to complain about anything.

Ok, we get it.

Per the "Exurban League" blog:

"The Burlington Township School District, to which B. Bernice Youngs Elementary School belongs, posted the following Letter to Parents this morning.

Dear Burlington Township Families:

Today we became aware of a video that was placed on the internet which has been reported in the media. The video is of a class of students singing a song about President Obama. The activity took place during Black History Month in 2009, which is recognized each February to honor the contributions of African Americans to our country. Our curriculum studies, honors and recognizes those who serve our country. The recording and distribution of the class activity were unauthorized.

If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me or Dr. King, Principal of B. Bernice Young School, directly.

Sincerely,
Dr. Christopher M. Manno,
Superintendent of Schools"

So, we now know it was part of an official school program.

The superintendant is also most concerned about the video, not the song. He is ok with the song since it "studies, honors and recognizes those who serve our country".

Where is the Condi Rice song from 2001 to 2008, BTW?

Paid for by taxpayers.

I miss the days when schoolchildren were forced to bow down and pray to George W. Bush while in school, paid for by taxpayers and sanctioned by the school district and state.

This is just harmless adulation. Doesn't even rise to idolation, not to mention idolatry.

We just love that Prez!

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
that saved a racist - me!
I once was right, but now I'm proud
of my Obama-olatry

I think the superintendent is not off base to be concerned about the unauthorized video. Parents have a reasonable expectation that their children's privacy will be protected by the school, do they not?

I figure Downtown would hate Obama since he has come out against gay marriage.

Also, more generally, I notice that the serious leftist nuts aren't really posting here any more. I find it interesting. I think their energy has been sapped and, in their guts, they know Obama is going to fail. Thus, they don't have the heart to argue.

Absolutely. But I read it as him thinking the song itself was ok since it was just about honoring someone.

I doubt the person who made this video is some rabid Obama hater. Don't you?

Peter Hoh said...

Seven, I suspect that the person who filmed this likes Obama. The person who promoted it -- and added the ominous soundtrack -- most likely doesn't like Obama. So what?

The intent of the person who filmed this does not bear on the privacy expectations of the parents regarding their children being splashed across the internet.

The superintendent seems to have a seriously odd sense of priorities. The privacy violation is minor - this was a classroom video of a group exercise, not of a private activity and not of something that might be embarrassing to the children. I can understand some concern but it's not a big deal.

More importantly, don't parents also have a right to expect that their children will not be subjected to this sort of required activity in school? Yet the superintendent doesn't even make a ritual bow in the direction of that aspect. Not even a sentence about how "We recognize that parents may be concerned about the nature of such classroom activities, and we want to reassure them that yadda yadda."
