Ever feel like you missed something and as inchoate as it is, you're struck a little melancholy by the whole thing?
After dropping off my daughter and the cats last night at her mum's place, I went back to my now-empty and rather lifeless apartment via the grocery store, and that vibe wrapped around me like a fireblanket.
"Powerline has been going in a very bad direction recently; the “all Obama-hatred, all the time” focus is bad enough, but worse are their articles supporting European extremists like Geert Wilders (who wants to deprive Muslims of the freedom of religion and ban books) and outright fascists like the Belgian Vlaams Belang party."
When I was a kid those were weeds; the prickly thistles considered particularly noxious. In those pre-Roundup days I had to sickle them out of our gravel driveway.
They do look pretty in the picture though, the more so because their eradication is not my responsibility.
Please ask Meade whether it is Teasle or Thistle in the meadow. At our granddaughter's cousin's Baptism service yesterday one of the other beautiful enfants was a girl they named "Grant". The Pastor said the name meant a "gift", and that she might grow up to grant money for the Church. It seems that Names all have meanings, unless you make something up yourself. My son is named Benjamin which means son of James. I wonder if Meade's name comes from a "meadow" full of flowers.

I haven't read Powerline or Little Green Footballs in years, so I was curious to see what the basis was for this little tiff. So over to Google I go.
It turns out there is exactly one article at Powerline that mentions Vlaams Belang -- because a member of that party has been imprisoned for allegedly *saying* racist things. LGF is equating support for free speech with support for fascism.
As for Powerline's "support" of Geert Wilders, LGF itself contains many similar articles. So on this issue, Johnson is condemning Powerline for being too much like... him.

I had a great time at the Post Office. That's right, the Post Office.
The downtown office is in a building that takes up the whole block. Circumnavigating looking for parking took me farther and farther from the front door until on the third side I finally turned into the building for covered parking, so I basically drove around the block but ended up inside on an upper floor. Inside parking was all taken too, or reserved which caused me to go further circling upward. The whole time I was thinking, "This is going to be a long walk back to the front door. How will I protect these three pop-up cards from the rain?" Finally I found a spot, to my complete surprise, right next to an elevator that zipped directly down to the Post Office. Expecting a crowd because of all the cars, when I got inside, for the first time in my life, I was the only customer in the whole place! I felt like dancing. Instead I just chatted it up with the PO people. I learned from them I could take some Priority Mail envelopes home so I could be totally prepared next times.
Unrelated to the Post Office, have you ever seen Tamarind? It's a pod that grows on a tree and it's delicious.
Chip, we're familiar with tamarind. Had a nice tamarind sauce on our curry Saturday night. Sometimes, we enjoy it raw. My wife has had it straight from the tree.
I’m genuinely sorry, Freeman. I was trying to make fun of myself, but I must have done a poor job of it.

All decent citizens should write to MTV to premptorily squash this so called moment of reconciliation. Freeman, I'm with you on this. More must be done to stop the ohjectification of women. Yes. Following links from the crack investigative ACORN team, I found this caption under a picture of Hannah Giles (wearing a black tank top and white short-shorts) on Ace of Spades:

On a different note, I’m going to a talk by some physicist who wrote a book about his interest in time travel. I’m looking forward to it!
That would be really cool. The universe is not a giant memory module, it doesn't hold on to anything beyond its present, therefore backwards time travel is impossible outside of a fictional state.

Yes. Following links from the crack investigative ACORN team, I found this caption under a picture of Hannah Giles (wearing a black tank top and white short-shorts) on Ace of Spades:
A quick check at Google indicates that Ace of Spades has been making "I'd hit that" comments for years. So how is that evidence of increasing acceptance of objectification?
For that matter, since when is it "objectifying" to speak sexually about a person who has dressed in a deliberately sexy way? If I wore a suit and people said I looked serious and businesslike I wouldn't whine about objectification. That's why I wore the suit!
Is it just me or does it seem like the overt objectification of women is becoming increasingly accepted among certain members of the conservative/libertarian blogosphere?
traditionalguy, I don't think higher education is the determining thing. Look at men like Rush or Mark Steyn. If you think they appreciate the same world you live in, that is.
Pretend that's true. Does increasing objectification cause them to respond as a population over time by becoming better deals or worse?
Objectification isn't increasing. Guys are guys. What the girl's friends consider a good deal changes, perhaps. It's really their taste that she's catering to.
What you seem to want at the beginning is rather what develops, once the guy has this girl who seems magical to him.
The fairy tales leave out the beginning but become true anyway.
No, no, I'm not at all saying that people shouldn't be allowed to be attracted to each other.
I'm talking about things like "Here's a hot chick post" on blogs that otherwise consist of serious political commentary. Or top ten lists of hottest political editorialists. Cast off comments about open relationships, getting laid, wanting to "hit it," etc, etc, etc. I just think that's weird.
And it's not just toward women who market themselves that way.
All in all, it seems to have become perfectly normal for men to publicly comment on the relative "hotness" of any woman. I think that's very strange. Not strange that men would find women attractive, or that some men would make private comments about it, but strange that it's become accepted practice to make comments anytime, anywhere, about anyone, in any company.
Not her, herself. It was a cute stunt. Good for a yuk.
But the incessant fawning and juvenile puns from Treacher, Green and Reynolds? Embarrassing. Reminds me of a lecherous uncle pointing out how good his daughter looks as she's going out. Really good. REALLY GOOD!
Ick. Makes them seem creepy. Makes it seem like they've never seen a woman in a tight tee-shirt. Demeans the whole tea party movement, too, I think.
And I'm curious how she feels about it, or if she knows.
But it hardly seems new. The Web is kind of a massive locker room. (Trolling is not the only thing enhanced by the relative anonymity.)
Yeah, that's probably true. I've just been getting the impression that it's been bleeding into typically non-locker room areas lately, but that impression could be false.
Freeman...Is your point that Limbaugh is not educated outside his Radio Broadcaster skills? You are right, but he uses great communications skills to say what he does know. As for Steyn, if he is not college educated, he is a witty genius with wonderful style. But you are correct that both of these men could expand their world views by adding more education.
But the incessant fawning and juvenile puns from Treacher, Green and Reynolds? Embarrassing.
How exactly does one go about discussing a boob czar in a serious and adult manner?
Reminds me of a lecherous uncle pointing out how good his daughter looks as she's going out. Really good. REALLY GOOD!
What on Earth are you babbling about? The woman in the pictures is clearly in her 30s at least. Also, is your daughter in the habit of wearing skin-tight shirts that talk about her tits? Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course, I'm just sayin'. :)
The boob czar is not an example of men objectifying women . That was a woman who objectified herself. She of the tight fitting turquoise top with the enhancements or the natural endowments on full display with the message reading:
BOOB CZAR
along with a black cowboy hat and oddly incongruent furry boots, walking along with another self-named czar of transparency. Are men to take responsibility for the attention women draw to themselves?
Freeman...Thanks and I agree with you, but as I age I have seen a new depth in research and discoveries not available even 10 years ago, including in history, psychology, leadership, and social sciences. Unless we make the effort to keep up, we will become less interesting and more out of touch. The Professor does her part to keep us up to speed in her Blog posts, but we need to keep studying scholarly works like we eat ice cream.
"The women who never get College and further educations are not as much fun."
College is to education as McDonald's is to cooking.
College as a requirement would eliminate nearly every woman born before 1900 and even today most women in the world. Surely there are a few fun ones in there.
Bagoh20...My bad for using the word "fun" in regard to sharing ideas and sharing insights. There are fun women like the apparently wonderful girl friends of John Edwards and Mark Sanford. But that kind of fun is like checkers fun compared to chess fun. Then there is Golf fun which surpasses all other human endeavors.
How exactly does one go about discussing a boob czar in a serious and adult manner?
Where did he say anyone had to do that?
Chip, I agree that she objectified herself. But she did so to a point. There's a continuum, I think. Some maybe took it past a point where it became unseemly. (Writing about wanting to personally ice down her nipples seemed a bit much.)
Freeman...What does not necessarily follow formal education may follow it when it never follows a lack of it. When younger I would run two miles almost every day. But when someone ran with me, four miles seemed easy. The crowd we spend our time with does affect our tastes and habits, especially if we are people pleasers. Can we re-write Psalm 1:1 as, "Walk not in the counsel of the uneducated, nor stand in the path of the non-readers, nor sit in the seat of scorners of formal education"? I agree that there are many brave and fun persons that are great to have with you in a time of fighting, but they may not be as interesting when times of peace return.
Can't say I've missed your alleged style of argumentation, Rev.
How exactly does one go about discussing a boob czar in a serious and adult manner?
What is there to discuss? "Nice rack." End of story. Treacher tweeted about a dozen links to this woman. PJ did, what--two? three? videos about it. Reynolds linked it twice, I think, once with a stupid breast pun.
Adults?
The incessant nudging and pointing was juvenile and creepy. Somehow I'm not surprised that you don't see that.
Treach had really been on the stories that weren't getting covered by the media. His tweet links were so good, I had just started clicking through automatically.
So, it was like:
[click] "Ha ha. Boob Czar. Cute. Nice figure."
[click] "Oh, heh. There she is again. Nice boots. Huh, nothing new. Same pix even."
[click] "OK, Treacher likes her."
[click] ...
[click] "Crap."
[click] "Well, that's it. I'm going to Instapundit."
[click] "WTF!?!?!"
PJ = Pajamas Media
[click] "Oh, look, they've got a new video with...Oh, COME ON!"
Is there are shortage of pictures of big-boobed women on the 'net? Did that well dry up and no one notified me?
What is there to discuss? "Nice rack." End of story. Treacher tweeted about a dozen links to this woman. PJ did, what--two? three? videos about it. Reynolds linked it twice, I think, once with a stupid breast pun.
Adults?
I've never been able to identify with that mentality. "Ew, they're talking about sex! Only kids are into sex, why can't they act like adults! Instapundit mentioned a girl with big hooters TWICE, ew ew ew."
"Adult" is not a synonym for "cenobite". I'm sorry if people get offended when adult male bloggers talk about attractive women when you wanted to hear them complain about Barack Obama some more, but oh wait I'm not sorry about that at all. Nevermind.
Hardly offended, just bored. And also not looking for an expression of regret from you. But it's cute that you think anyone would care.
I know for a fact Treacher lost followers over it, but that's his choice. And if your perception is the popular one, i.e., that they just bitch about Obama and that repeatedly linking a handful of G-rated cheesecake shots is really a welcome relief, well, they're pretty much f&cked anyway.
You can dress it up as "talking about sex" but "look at those boobs!" doesn't really pay much respect to what these guys have been doing for the past 5-10 years.
Besides seeming desperate one way, it also seems desperate in another: Was there only ONE good-looking woman out of the 60K-2M? Really?
You decided to post a bunch of complaints about the Boob Czar because the bloggers talking about her... bored you? Explain why anyone, least of all them, should care that you are bored. I rather doubt anyone has ever woken up and thought "how can I amuse blake today".
doesn't really pay much respect to what these guys have been doing for the past 5-10 years.
Oh, please. Treacher's blog has been chock full of sex and low humor for years, and Glenn Reynolds has always paid attention to "protest babes". If you're looking for anti-sex conservatives, try The Corner.
Exaggerate much? Oh, right, yeah, you do. Along with mis-characterizing what people say.
You decided to post a bunch of complaints about the Boob Czar because the bloggers talking about her... bored you?
Yeah, I decided to make two short posts here in direct response to Freeman (one of which was positive about the woman herself). Subsequent posts have been the futile attempt to try to communicate with you.
Oh, and, yeah, I guess I also thought about tweeting JT directly about it. So, I guess a post-and-a-half and thinking about a tweet, constitutes a "bunch of complaints".
Explain why anyone, least of all them, should care that you are bored.
I wouldn't think it would be necessary to explain this, but if you really don't understand, I'll try.
Let's say you had a movie or book or, hey, even a website you wanted to sell, you might care what your potential audience thought.
There's this thing called "demographics" which says that people fall into particular groups, and very often something that appeals to one person appeals to many in that group. Conversely, something that repulses a person, repulses many in that group.
I rather doubt anyone has ever woken up and thought "how can I amuse blake today".
Shows you how little you know about me. Or mass media.
If you're looking for anti-sex conservatives, try The Corner.
George Carlin used to do this routine about driving. Anyone driving slower than you is an asshole, while anyone who drives faster is an maniac. That same sort of mentality can be applied to anything, apparently.
Oh, for goodness sakes. Saying the boob czar was overdone isn't being "anti-sex". It was cute and funny. It became a bit juvenile/obsessive and it turned me off to reading a few people. For a time, anyway. And I'm certainly not anti-sex.

It's not objectification. It's celebration of men having very low standards.
This is what gives women a chance, since most of them are not good deals.

For that matter, since when is it "objectifying" to speak sexually about a person who has dressed in a deliberately sexy way? If I wore a suit and people said I looked serious and businesslike I wouldn't whine about objectification. That's why I wore the suit!
Freeman Hunt said...
Is it just me or does it seem like the overt objectification of women is becoming increasingly accepted among certain members of the conservative/libertarian blogosphere?
I don't like it.
Sarah Palin is so a MILF.
Real men use bing.
When I go I want to be buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
I'm not taking any chances ;)
I was born at Resurrection Hospital. Before that, it's all a blur.
..overt objectification of women is becoming increasingly accepted among certain members of the conservative/libertarian blogosphere?
My theory is that when you cant go too hard after Obama you hard after other ... never mind ;)
It's not objectification. It's celebration of men having very low standards.
This is what gives women a chance, since most of them are not good deals.
Pretend that's true. Does increasing objectification cause them to respond as a population over time by becoming better deals or worse?
traditionalguy, I don't think higher education is the determining thing. Look at men like Rush or Mark Steyn. If you think they appreciate the same world you live in, that is.
This thread took an unexpected turn...
Freeman, methinks you touched a nerve.
Freeman, methinks you touched a nerve.
Heh. pluck pluck
Freeman, can you be a little more specific about what is giving you pause?
Pretend that's true. Does increasing objectification cause them to respond as a population over time by becoming better deals or worse?
Objectification isn't increasing. Guys are guys. What the girl's friends consider a good deal changes, perhaps. It's really their taste that she's catering to.
What you seem to want at the beginning is rather what develops, once the guy has this girl who seems magical to him.
The fairy tales leave out the beginning but become true anyway.
No idea what you're referring to, Freem.
Much like last time when it was about flirting.
Not sure if I haven't seen it or just not perceived it.
Wait! Is this about the Boob Czar?
'cause if it is: Total agreement.
Wait! Is this about the Boob Czar?
'cause if it is: Total agreement.
Perfect example!
Oh, yeah, I'd agree with that, too.
But it hardly seems new. The Web is kind of a massive locker room. (Trolling is not the only thing enhanced by the relative anonymity.)
The Boob Czar is embarrassing.
I've just been getting the impression that it's been bleeding into typically non-locker room areas lately, but that impression could be false.
.. Much like last time when it was about flirting.
don't forget hugging.. thats out too.
wv - sudjewav .. I'm not making it up.
I don't find the appealing women are the ones that get called hot, so I imagine it's a social contest for a younger age group.
Guys don't talk about women at all when guys are with each other.
Call the phenomenon giving voice to what's always been going on on the male side.
Maybe it's a reaction to man's place in the PC world having been circumscribed to a feminist ideal.
They're making elbow room.
In which case it's not really new, but just anti-feminist. They can't be counted on to toe the party line, is the boast.
And it's important that feminists be in earshot.
Althouse subject matter for sure. http://blogs.static.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/34971.html
Ace, not new at all. And I don't even think he's posted on it, ironically.
The others?
I remember the Orange and Cedar revolutions, and their "protest babes". And the photos were primarily of these beautiful young women's faces.
There wasn't all the "heavy breathing".
I have other qualms, too, about the differences between what Lebanon and Syria face versus what we face. But I've gone on long enough.
In which case it's not really new, but just anti-feminist. They can't be counted on to toe the party line, is the boast.
And it's important that feminists be in earshot.
That's probably right.
traditionalguy, my point was that formal education is not necessarily necessary. A person can educate himself too.
The Professor does her part to keep us up to speed in her Blog posts, but we need to keep studying scholarly works like we eat ice cream.
oddly incongruent furry boots
UGGs are so 2002, I agree.
I also agree that the boob czar objectified herself.
(Writing about wanting to personally ice down her nipples seemed a bit much.)
we need to keep studying scholarly works like we eat ice cream.
I haven't noticed this hobby necessarily following education.
Lem, I don't really take such a hard line on hugging, though I might in a comment for comedic effect. :)
following formal education.
What does not necessarily follow formal education may follow it when it never follows a lack of it.
My issue is that I do not think the bit bolded above is true as regards college or grad school.
Treacher tweeted about a dozen links to this woman.
Don't follow Treacher...should I start?
PJ did, what--two? three? videos about it.
WTF is PJ?
Reynolds linked it twice, I think, once with a stupid breast pun.
Instapundit has always had an eye for the girls, for as long as I can remember at least.
Slow news day?
Now get back to twitter guys..Ron is out of the hospital!
Where did he say anyone had to do that?
I'm sorry, but the boob czar issue had to be discussed at length. It was mandatory.
CL,
Treach had really been on the stories that weren't getting covered by the media. His tweet links were so good, I had just started clicking through automatically.
So, it was like:
[click] "Ha ha. Boob Czar. Cute. Nice figure."
[click] "Oh, heh. There she is again. Nice boots. Huh, nothing new. Same pix even."
[click] "OK, Treacher likes her."
[click] ...
[click] "Crap."
[click] "Well, that's it. I'm going to Instapundit."
[click] "WTF!?!?!"
PJ = Pajamas Media
[click] "Oh, look, they've got a new video with...Oh, COME ON!"
Is there are shortage of pictures of big-boobed women on the 'net? Did that well dry up and no one notified me?
Is there are shortage of pictures of big-boobed women on the 'net?
Not anymore.
Nevermind.
Hey, Rev. Good to see you again.
Really?
Did I go somewhere? :)
Hardly offended, just bored.
But it was funnier when he did it.
Oh, for goodness sakes. Saying the boob czar was overdone isn't being "anti-sex". It was cute and funny. It became a bit juvenile/obsessive and it turned me off to reading a few people. For a time, anyway. And I'm certainly not anti-sex.
I agree with Freeman and Blake.
