Oh darn, and I was just going to say that from an historical perspective, things seem more "Stalinist" than "fascist." Gosh, maybe the best tag is "the real American Idol."
All political shirts have irony in their futures. I was very happy to buy a "Viva Bush" shirt from the 2004 campaign, in full knowledge that it would come in handy for an un-W-related moment or two in the future.
Now, 5 years later, finalizing my papers to head up to Hill St. and file my divorce petition in about 20 minutes, I see that future taking the shape of a trip to a nudie bar with some friends, wearing the "Viva Bush" shirt. See, you just have to know the possibilities at the time of purchase. "Viva Bush" was a real no-brainer.
Well, even if not a nudie bar (that's something I haven't done since my best friend's bachelor party in 2000), maybe a club where the gals have a good sense of humor.

As well it should be. Whether a person is “left” or “right” or whether that person is the tasty vanilla cream-based frosting in between, politically earnest persons are the salt of the Earth and the backbone of this Great Nation of ours, conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition that two wrongs don’t make a right but three rights make a left.
And if you know what’s right, you won’t get left behind. And there’s nothing worse than leaving something behind on your behind.
But what of Obamamanman? Where’s his piece of the American Dream Pie?
Don’t ask me, I’m still trying to get the ambiguity out of the box.
But one thing I know, and know damn well, if there were a little kid stuck in a well, Obama Man would arrive in a nick of time, full of nicotine.
. . . Now then . . . where was I? . . . oh, oh yeah . . .
"Does the shirt have some special feature to make it's wearer LOOK LIKE Obama? Or was your cousin already that way."
Glad somebody noticed. The kid is a dead ringer.
Not clear how old the handsome young fellow is, but is Althouse sure he's not being ironic? Is it ok if he's just being silly? Or youthfully exuberant? Anyway, good looking kid. Hope his life turns out great.
Stupid liberals in Hashville - stop the presses! That place is an embarrassment. It's a shame that so many tourists form their impression of NC based on their time in that zone of burned out hippies and their offspring.
NKVD: You have missed out on the new, improved Ashville. Retirees from suburban Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, etc. Aging preppies outnumber aging hippies about 10-1.
I have a bumper sticker that reads, "End Overpopulation, Support Socialized Medicine." I'm afraid to put it on my car because there are too many people in my area who would think both that I was being serious and that it was a great idea.
At least when the shirt does become ironic, James will have had time to become jaded with government power and be able to take full advantage of its irony potential.
Whenever I get too disgusted with the short-sighted, mouth breathing idiocy that passes for criticism of Obama these days-- see the ham flap currently spotlighted on drudge-- I am immediately cheered up by the fact that we are only 6 months into his first term.
Plenty of time for people to think hard and come up with some substantive critique.
Since some think the original "Fascism" tag was appropriate, how about a "Fashion is like fascism" tag? It sures seems that way to me since my wife dresses me, and I don't follow the trends (and seldom wear shorts).
Not too fond of the subject matter, but I am a fan of the artist, Alex Ross. The man is one of the top comic book artists out there today, best known for his work on the book "Kingdom Come" (with writer Mark Waid)
Obama had the touch with young people in the election.
Since they will be the ones bearing a huge burden from his policies this is only fitting.
If they can find a job eventually, then they will pay the high Obama taxes. If they can't find a job, then at least they'll have free healthcare (which they don't really need at this point in their lives) and clean energy (which they'll have anyway because they can't afford cars to drive or gas to put in the cars).
Yes, Monty. Perhaps with Obama's unprecedentedly transparent administration, perhaps someone, somewhere, will be able to find some mistake in his actions in the next 3.5 years.
"Unironically" isn't fair to the kid. He may not be lampooning the Obama-messiah-meme (blah boring blah) in the political way that you would call ironic, but it isn't like he actually believes Obama has laser eyes.
How square do you need to be to think irony is strictly binary? Even Huckabee and Chuck Norris get that. Its clear from his expression that he thinks its a funny shirt.
Well I figure that it's about time for me to weigh in on my picture...
First...Thanks to all of you who called me handsome. It was very flattering.
Second...Ann is completely right in posting "unironic(al)". I am a full fledged Obama supporter who believes he has the chance to be one of the greatest presidents of all time. That being said, do I think he will be able to be America's superhero [aka conquer every issue]? No, but I have faith he will lead us in the right direction. Few, if any, other presidents have entered into their presidencies with such a plethora of problems. Not to mention Obama must deal with a partisan, immature, greedy Congress. Never has politics been more about money. All these politicians do is sit around and play the "blame game" in order to make themselves and their party look better. It is pathetic.
Third...Give Obama time. To all of those naysayers, I'd like to hear their alternative plans to get us out of this mess. He is doing what he can, and for the most part is making the right moves. Global Warming is being addressed, the stimulus money will really begin to have an affect next year, gay rights will soon be fully equalized, he's trying to curtail military spending, and universal health care is looking more plausible than ever.
It has only been 6 months. Did all of you "former" Obama supporters expect a miracle? Our countries are complex, which requires a complex method to fix them. Luckily we have an incredibly intelligent, charismatic president surrounded by similarly intelligent people to get the job done.
Obama the superhero, will be greeted with applause soon.

Is that an "O" or a zero?
I'm half-tempted to collect all this stuff for a museum of regrettable cultural moments.
But only half, and I need 2/3rds to actually go through with it.
I'll just stick with my "global warming" exhibit.
I note a "fascism" tag.Is that for insightful reasons or for ironic reasons?
Oh, no! That was supposed to be "fashion." It autocompleted after "fas" to "fascism." Really funny, but not nice to James!
Oh darn, and I was just going to say that from an historical perspective, things seem more "Stalinist" than "fascist." Gosh, maybe the best tag is "the real American Idol."
Well, one of the requirements, as I've always understood it, is a cult of personality on which it needs to be based. That certainly fits the bill.
@my own previous post
...by "requirement", I meant for fascism.
I took the "facism" label to mean the same thing that Scott M did.
I think you should put it back.
Does the shirt have some special feature to make it's wearer LOOK LIKE Obama? Or was your cousin already that way.
The tag should be "unintentional hilarity." And doesn't that kind of undergraduate adoration seem a bit stale at this point?
The shirt will have ironic meaning in the future when the present cult of Onanism becomes "every man for himself."
"There's no need to fear! Under(achiever)dawg is here!"

So what if he doesn't iron his t-shirts, I don't care.

As in: “LOOK! UP IN THE SKY! IT’S A BIRD! IT’S A PLANE! IT’S A GIANT O-RING!!!1!!!!!!!!
(For shame. Please accept my apology. )

Agreed. Which makes the Anglosphere resistance to that marvelous French invention, the bidet, inexplicable.
Chip, that was excellent.
I have two Leinenkugel t-shirts.
That t-shirt would be a showstopper if it was Palin.

Is it true that the Presidential 747 is now called Airforce 0 in honor of us having a missing American President?

Burned out hippies have a right to live too, passing the bong around;
As long as they don't frighten the horses and generally go to ground.

The shirt doesn't really look like Obama. It's an idealized male figure with the right visual clues added to signal "Obama".
The wearer doesn't look like Obama much at all, but *does* look a bit like that idealized male figure.
In other words... he's a very handsome young man.
I don't know about future irony. People wear Che t-shirts without irony even today.
Blake, LOL!!

re: the "fascism tag
Entirely proper to change it. So far it's more of a National Socialist approach.
And, really! A leather-and-green-bead necklace with an Obamaman shirt? A feather boa is what's needed. To soak up the tingle.
QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings and inefficiencies to our health care system,"

Shouldn't there be a unicorn leaping out through the middle of the O?
And isn't the real Superman usually looking straight out at the reader? This one seems to be reading a teleprompter.
Montagne, you don't see a problem with paying more than retail for a wholesale item?
I thought the point of the buying in bulk was to get the lowest possible price per unit.
Sure, $1.59 per lb govt ham isn't as egregious as a $600 hammer, but there's no excuse for it either.
Veni, I'm so sorry to read that. Hang in there.

I asked about whether the shirt was being worn ironically. I am not making an inference.
O brother!
So, who doesn't wear a T shirt right out of the dryer? It's the (single, male) American Way!
...and I've got a Favre jersey. It seemed like a good idea at the time...
What a tease! No food porn?
Obama had the touch with young people in the election.
Since they will be the ones bearing a huge burden from his policies this is only fitting..
Hee, hee, hee. That is comforting (in a mean sort of way).
So is that where the penis goes? It's like a penis target.
