Look how silly the Russians made Obama look...

... by giving him a really low chair:

And nice sock-pulling, Prez. Because it would only be worse if that forced hunkering exposed shin skin.

ADDED: Reminds me of this:

I wonder how much of this is intentional. It seems like there have been some photographs of this trip that make Obama look subservient or odd. Here, my guess is that is an accident and the effect is exagerrated by the camera angle. It seems like the two chairs are identical.

I'm no Obama supporter, but when I look at this picture, my first impression is "Damn, how short are the Russian people", followed by "Our President sure looks a lot better than the ugly guy".

Invisble Man and Jeremy (oh, c'mon everyone - you know he's gonna show up on an Obama post)there. I said something nice about the President. And I mean it. He is a dignified and good-looking man.

If only Chip Ahoy would photoshop Bush's head onto Obama's body then we could talk about how stupid Bush looks.

Anonymous said...

I believe it's entirely intentional on Putin's part. And Chase has it wrong. That photo was published for a particular reason, and it was aimed at the Russian people

Reminds me of stories I've heard about the infamous Admiral Rickover interviews. Rickover interviewed every officer candidate for the nuclear Navy, and was a holy terror. One of the things he did was trim the front legs of the chair of the interviewee, so that person would slowly slide forward during the interview. Insidious. It was distracting and kept the candidate off guard. It was said to be very effective. Of course, Rickover was a brutal, vicious sonofabitch, who would stop at nothing to break a man down.

Sort of like Vladimir Putin.

Putin is doing a variation of Rickover's game here. He's made Obama look like an idiot. Not a difficult task, granted. But, nonetheless.

The whole trip to Russia is like this. Witness that pathetic photo of him attempting to shake hands with Medevev. Medevev is standing behind the podium looking rather disgusted as Obama slavishly tries to make the scene go his way. Fail.

Another quick point. The Russians, in general, despise black people, to a degree that would make a Klansman blush. All this talk about them "admiring" the First Lady for working with her hands is an insult unparalleled. They are equating Michelle Obama with a serf; an underling. A slave. Russians of the ruling class would never dream of "working with their hands." The American press is spinning this as a triumphant trip to Russia, but the Russians are laughing at the Obamas for the pathetic hicks they believe them to be.

Weird camera angle. President Obama is, what, about six inches taller than Putin? I am guessing the chairs are identical. Bad posture and sock pulling adds to the poor effect for the President.

Considerably so, 6'1.5" vs. 5'7".

This is yet another the result of amateur hour at the White House.

In advance of every presidential visit, an advance team works with the people for the presidential counterpart to set up all the seemingly infintessimally small details.

From camera angles, to where podiums will be placed, to lighting, to chair heights. A good advance team knows what puts "their guy" in the best possible light and how to negotiate these sorts of things well in advance.

Putin is significantly shorter than Obama, so Obama looks oversized in the chairs they used. Instead of negotiating for a chair in which their guy wouldn't look ridiculous, they obviously let the Russians set up a photo in which Putin looks comfortable and relaxed while Obama looks uncomfortable and out of sorts.

Obama should fire his advance team and bring in some professionals, but then he's not exactly known for competence in selecting staff now is he? Maybe his current advance folks are the only ones left on his list who didn't have tax problems.

Fred4Pres said...

It is true Russians tend to be racist, although they do distinguish black Americans (which they consider exotic (i.e., entertainers, sports figures, etc.) from black Africans (which they have virtually no respect for and consider less valuable than chimps).

I think the Michelle Obama thing and gardening is a reference to the Russian love of maintaining a summer garden. The whole Dacha thing. That was not a field worker slight. Russians love to get their hands dirty...including gardening.

If the chair things was staged that way, Obama's protocol staff really blew it. My guess is the Russian photographer was just looking for the goof shot to embarass. If that is your adversary's goal, it is hard to completely defend against it--but good posture and facial control help enormously.

Brooks's adulation of Obama is hard to figure. His column, after being critical throughout of specific public figures and society in general, concludes with this:

"But it’s not right to end on a note of cultural pessimism because there is the fact of President Obama. Whatever policy differences people may have with him, we can all agree that he exemplifies reticence, dispassion and the other traits associated with dignity. The cultural effects of his presidency are not yet clear, but they may surpass his policy impact. He may revitalize the concept of dignity for a new generation and embody a new set of rules for self-mastery."

The assessment is so superficial. Obama has been consistently disengenuous and sometimes lying at least since he started his run for the presidency, and continues to lie with abandon. And Broder sees that as dignity?

Jeez. Clever KGB, hideously stoooopid WH Staff.

Of course the chairs look allike, until you get closer, then you realize that Putin's chair is 1/2" to 3/4" taller. Not noticible to the untrained eye, but you'd have to be a carpenter to notice.

The chair is, in all probability, only slightly shorter in the front and a little less shorter in the back. Obama's been moked. Softer cushion, too.

Condi Rice would never have let this happen to her.

Russians and their practical jokes....

The low chair is a very old trick. It's used so often that it's not even a trick. Look at Congressional hearings. The congressboobs are higher up than the witnesses. Message: "We are more powerful than you."

Obama is getting quite a treatment from the Russians. I fear this is only the beginning.

EnigmatiCore said...

I think Rob is right. By the way the chairs are laid out, if anything Obama's chair is further away from the camera than Putin's. Yet, the distance from the foot of the chair to the bottom of the wood on the crossboard is the same.

Not true about ethnic Russians rejecting the rodina.
They are about as strong on the tie to soil and hard work as the French are about the unique French terroire.

What Russians hate are those who seen as parasites, who don't work with their hands, but feed off the work of others....

Capitalists, the hated Jewish elites under Communism and the Yeltsin oligarchy. Nepotism of Party boss families. The Chechen syndicates. The Chinese menace. Indolent blacks demanding Russian University spots and Russian wheat sent to African lands where farmers are lower in staus than criminals and armed thuggery as career choices..And just the act of working is looked down on as womanish stuff unfit for a black male "prince" or "warrior" to engage in.

They're co-ordinated chairs from a set, but patently not identical despite the matching upholstery. Obama was made to look the fool. Yesterday's photo with Medvedev harkens back to the WC Fields line, "Go away, kid. You bother me." The previous day's pic shows Medvedev standing still with his arm outstretched at almost shoulder height, while Obama races across the scene to grab Medvedev's hand from underneath.

Obama is so far out of his depth, he probably has no idea how foolish the Russians made him look to the world.
Note also the laudatory telegram Putin sent to W yesterday. Putin's telegram recalled warmly Bush's hospitality at both the Craford ranch and the Kennebunkport estate as well as Putin's respect for Bush even in disagreement.
Message to Obama: You are not even a shadow of your predecessor.

But anyways, this reminds of the time I went to visit a college friend's family in Virginia. I'm 6'1 and the tallest person in the family was like 5'3. there is nothing dignified about looking point blank at a woman and saying that "you are likable enough".

The result was that the Russians challenged him with missiles in Cuba.

Spare me your ridiculous self-righteousness. If the Left thinks that it's perfectly OK to call the president a "chimp," then you hardly have room to complain when someone returns the favor.

You don't own the word. You don't have a right to wield it as a weapon, and think hide behind your mother's skirt and claim that it's now all of a sudden out of bounds.

Either it's a valid insult, or it isn't. When you go back and condemn every person who used it as a derisive term against Bush, then you can come to me with your moral outrage about how it's purely a racist taunt.

A guy with big protruding ears with his legs up around his neck is going to be compared to a chimpanzee regardless of his race. Your side made the comparison a valid one when we were talking about presidents. You don't get to complain about it now.

Like I said to fls on another thread, you're the ones who concocted the medicine and you have no right to complain when it gets shoveled in your face when the political party in charge of the White House changes.

The Brooks paragraph is a Pravda-esque state-run-media parody of powers-that-be sycophancy.

Example after example abound of Obama being the opposite of what is described: Obama and family have been willing accomplices in celeb-level image-building, to the point there Michelle has given us annoying glimpses into Barack's private life; her comment that Barack is 'stinky' in the morning was an anti-Washingtonian-dignity TMI moment.
Obama's campaign has played the master of ceeremonies to the hucksterism of a Cult of Personality, replete with faux greek columns at his acceptance speech, and the $170 million inauguration. In substantive matter, Obama is eager to personalize what he should not: He injects the "I" word in foreign policy where the royal "we" would be better; he's a representative not a potentate.

We have fallen so far as a political culture, that we've gone from a society where Presidents did not deign to campaign at all (as brooks notes), to a President in permanent campaign. (The latest outrages: The Obama admin creates Potemkim-village like townhall, stuffs it with shills for his healthcare agenda who were preselected to ask loaded questions, so the townhall is nothing but a campaign stunt less genuine than a Billie Mays infomercial, and the state-run media runs it without comment, and worse, dares not speak the truth about this. That's another concept that I refuse to bow down to the PC Police on. Racism has a definition, and you don't get to change it. If you want to make up some other word that connotes whether or not the racist is a member of the majority or not, have at it and make one up. But you're not entitled to some kind of NewSpeak redefinition of a word that has a clear meaning.

This is just another bogus attempt to relieve minorities from responsibility when they promulgate hatred against other races - whether it's black vs. white, Hispanics vs. blacks, Koreans vs. Jews, whatever. It's an attempt to apply a special stigma to white hatred while completely ignoring and excusing that of everyone else. That's just not gonna fly.

If you've ever been a white person in an inner city neighborhood after dark, then you know that racist blacks are capable of as much hatred as any KKKer. Look at the gang violence in LA or Compton between blacks and Hispanics who are warring for pretty much no other reason than the fact that they are of different ethnicities.

Sorry, Invisible. You don't get to set the ground rules. If something is racist for one, then it's racist for all.

If you're entitled to use an epithet to refer to me (or other members of my race, religion, whatever), then I'm (or they) entitled to direct it back at you. I don't care what the word is, or what the "historical context" is. If you felt free enough of its historical context to toss it around when you direct at me, you have no leg to stand on when it gets turned back around on you. Evidently you didn't think it was so "racially insensitive" when you used it, so you can take your faux outrage and accusations of being a member of the Klan and stick em right back where you got the term from in the first place when you thought you were oh so clever to toss it around.

This ain't your playground, and you don't get to set the rules. Come back when you're grown up enough to play with the big boys.

Interesting. Seems the Russians learned from the trick one of the interviewers used on Sarah Palin to make her look physically smaller and less impressive. See the blog "Hollywood Trenches" for a discussion by an alleged Hollywood pro about camera angles, etc.

I am going to add fuel to IM's little fire. Here is my reaction to the media fawning over the "beautiful" Ms. Obama:

She appears to me to be very equine-looking when approaching and very bovine-looking when retreating. Translation for IM. She has a horse's face and cow's ass. There is nothing racial about that statement. It is what it is.

Obama does resemble a chimp. Let's call a spade a spade, meaning "To speak plainly - to describe something as it really is."

ATexan, don't be niggardly with your opinions, tell us how you really feel.

Obama is the US's Gorbachev. Putin understands exactly how to deal with that.
