The worst cases of detanee abuse happened in Bagram, not Abu Garib. They beat an innocent cab driver to death and were later aquited by a military jury. It was the worst instance of military justice I ever saw in my career.
The media never really reported it because there were no sexy pictures and they didn't have an axe to gring about the war in Afghanistan the way the did about Iraq.
I think we are long past the point of admitting that most of the people who screamed about detainee abuse under Bush did not care about torture or detainees or U.S. standing in the world. They cared about power and nothing else.
From the government's perspective, one serious problem with Guantanamo was that it is a pretty short plane ride from New York for all the pro-bono lawyers from the fancy law firms. (Amusingly enough, one of the reasons why Guantanamo was selected (as opposed to Wake Island, say) was that it was convenient to Washington.)
I suspect that not a lot of the pro-bono types are going to travel to Afghanistan...
Can one of our resident liberals please tell me after closing down Gitmo what do we do with captured terrorists? And if putting them in a stateside prison is really going to improve our 'standing' in the world?

I never liked Kool-Aid so I never drank it. I guess the current drinkers are suffering from the sugar crash. My esoteric friends who love Art Bell believe his handlers practice a form old pagan magic. I love America, there is a nut tree in every political corner.
Them steel storage containers work well for people too - a bucket in for their toilet, another bucket full of water, a couple of meals a day and there ain't no electric bill! No heating bill in the winter, no AC bill in the summer, they stay healthier by losing weight and that makes them happier detainees. Open the door and being crammed full of people, it is easy to grab one for some sport and torture. No waterboarding for the lads in Afghan - no sir! its hot irons on the balls and fingernails out in one clean jerk and maybe some long needles through the biceps if the day is getting boring. Obama may offer some containers to Mubarak, along with some cash of course.....

Bagram? What Bagram? It must be left over Cheney/Bush debris.
"If you actually took the number of Muslims in Bagram, it'd be one of the largest Muslim detention centers in the world."
Doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

It's in the same dusty corner of the garage as is the "End the War" lawn signs.

Bagram? Blame Bush.
If they close Gitmo and send them all to Bagram, how about that? My guess Obama gets a pass from the left, even Andrew Sullivan.

Everything in this country was PERFECT until that awful man Obama became president. Now it's all ruined. Waaaaaah.
I wonder whether the wingnuts who populate this place can wrap their minds around anything more complicated than that sentiment?
Apparently not.
Congratulations, Annie. You might be able to start a radical separatist movement!!
As a matter of fact, please do!!!

And you're not even good at it. Sheesh. Learn to troll, please.
Bagram was cool, but the best pig piles of naked prisoners are still made at Abu Ghraib.
Obama will find his own John Yoo, exactly the same only different.
Because he closed Guantanamo as payback to his far left-wing supporters - political motivation, not an issue he personally cares about.
Which is what gays are beginning to realize about him - he's simply starting to be recognized by even lefties as the lesser of evils.
Damn, I'm starting to miss the Obama Worship that greeted election night through the inauguration.

Arianna?

If Obama doesn't talk about it, it doesn't exist. You know, like the tree falling in the forest thing.
So, as Althouse asked: What about Bagram?
