In my experience red wine makes people forget conversations that I remember too well.

That...is a full glass of wine.

Well, since nobody else is bringing up tomorrow's big event, I guess I'm going to have to...

Who you got in Puppy Bowl V?

(my money's on Charlie Brown, those eyes...)

Also, why was this tweetable, but not bloggable (for me it was the other way around)

Palladian said...

Never fill a wineglass– especially a glass of red wine— more than half-way. It robs the funneling of the bouquet to the nose.
Me? I just poured a glass of Glenfiddich 18 to blunt the pain of a Final Cut Pro overdose.

David said...

A glass half full, for sure. Althouse the optimist.

Ann Althouse said...

@Palladian The glass is overfilled, but it does not runneth over.

@XWL We've got to define the boundary between bloggable and tweetable.

Ann Althouse said...

(I didn't pour it myself.)

blake said...

I'm a little disappointed! I thought you were tweaking the "Althouse is a drunk" crowd.

Palladian said...

Seasons of glass.

We just watched the new Indiana Jones movie. Pretty cool. I'm enjoying a glass of Maker's Mark and Karl Whetzel's addictive new song "Simply." And considering whether to cap the night with a pot of yoghurt. You know, after several years in the states, I still can't say yO-gert (as in "yo, my man!"). It's still "Yo-gt" where the first syllable is pronounced as the first syllable of "yacht." Old habits die hard.

I am trying to observe some of the other commenters writing more rather than just spouting out constantly.

One of the questions I have been thinking about is which of the commenters is in love with Althouse and wants to be married to her?

I am thinking probably most of the straight males. Am I correct?

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

(I didn't pour it myself.)

Somebody is trying to get Althouse drunk to have his way with her..

Security ;)

BTW - I'm having a Guinness.

hi professor
what is it with these tweetish ampersands
which sounds like some scandinavian item of clothing
and anyway i can t type them so i would
be a failure on twitter
but i do go on a bit long
so the 140 letters would be good
plus i jump from topic to topic and
chirp little inane things so maybe
i would be a natural
except i get nervous around big flocks of birds
they may be twittering but one of them
is sure to swoop down on little me
and gulp
no blogging cockroach
i m wondering if something like that
happened to poor meade
but that s a little too inside althouse
along with freeman s power outage and reader s
various problems etc
from my perspective i m wondering what
happened to freeman s fridge
with no power for a week i think of it
as something like disneyland

Freeman Hunt said...

Heh. She should take a picture of a glass that is running over with a puddle of wine under it and one of those wine boxes beside. Post it under the title "Tasty Beverage" with no explanatory text.

blogging cockroach said...

sorry everybody if the above is a little
too inside twitter you all will just
have to go over there and check out althouse s
tweet stream or whatever they call it
and be sure to ask freeman abt the fridge

Freeman Hunt said...

Oh, damn. I do not even want to think about that.

XWL said...

"I'm enjoying a glass of Maker's Mark", Simon, seems you are part of a trend (according to LAT)

Whiskey up, other liquors down.

And, there is no boundary between tweetable and bloggable as such, it's more of an area of overlapping venn diagrams I suspect. There are subjects that are both, subjects that are one, or the other, and on rare occasions, subjects that are neither bloggable or tweetable.

(Send that last sentence back in time ten years, and I'd sound like a crazy person)

(and there does seem to be an incestuous relationship developing between blogging and tweeting where tweets comment on blog posts, and blog posts comment on tweets, and even comment sections within blog posts reference tweets from people other than the blog host, as our resident insectoid commenter has illustrated)

I think the blogging cockroaches distant relatives may be having a party now.

btw i love overfull wine glasses
what with spills and all yum

Titus you are correct except for the marriage part.

Is Rush Limbaugh the defacto leader of the Republican Party?

So they don't want to marry her but want to get with her? Is that it?

Are these straight men married or single? And if they are married do their wives know?

The server who poured that glass of wine should be fired. Ridiculous, unless it was poured by a civilian, in which case...WTF?

I just got back from seeing "Frozen River" and loved it! Captivating from beginning to end, though you wouldn't think it would be a real "thrill ride" from looking at the trailer. Very authentic and great, gritty, real characters.

Does anyone care that Michael Phelps smokes pot? I think he looks hot with that big bong in his mouth.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

So they don't want to marry her but want to get with her? Is that it?

Some people also want the one they cant have.

Palladian said...

"Does anyone care that Michael Phelps smokes pot? I think he looks hot with that big bong in his mouth."

I know. He can sure suck on that big thing...

I know who a few of the mysterious commenters are. I figured out who Titus was a while ago. I used to think that the same person who performs as Titus performed as Maxine, but then I realized that wasn't possible. Still, it's fun knowing, and sorry, I won't ever tell. The person has (at least) two strong personas here, and I wouldn't want to ruin this person's fun.

Do a lot of you regular commenters come here every day but sometimes go days without commenting? There will be days when I'll read every post, look at the comments, but never add anything. Do you feel like your snooping or like you are a peeping tom, or do you just not have anything worthwhile to add to the conversation? I guess the better way to ask this is, do you ever feel like you're putting on your Comment Costume when you start to participate in a thread, or are you fine leaving one comment and then bailing out and not checking back in? I think it's a commitment if you leave a comment, especially on threads of a political or controversial nature.

Sometimes I don't have the guts and don't feel like getting in a fight with people...so I won't say anything because I don't feel like arguing. Because I'm not the type of person to say something and then not come back and at least try to defend it. You have to have balls to comment on a lot of the threads here, especially if you are a commie/liberal/pacifist.

I hate people who only leave one comment and then disappear. Hey, at least Michael stays around and fights.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

I just came back from a sweet 16 my sister did for her daughter.

All the fanfare with very little substance or umpf behind it. I mean they don't give out medals for aging do they?

What it that we feel so compelled to honor each other for so little?

When something worth honoring comes along it means nothing.

People kissing metal objects.

Well "titus" sent me a picture of himself with a clumber, as well as his name, using his work email account. I really doubt he's made up, though I suppose he could have another character who posts here. I'm pretty perceptive and most people can't write in a totally different voice with any consistency so I think I would have had suspicions if there was any cause.

"I hate people who only leave one comment and then disappear. Hey, at least Michael stays around and fights."

No, Michael just stays around and projectile vomits, hoping to hit a target occasionally.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

Hey, at least Michael stays around and fights.

I dont mind a good fight, I do mind vulgarity and coarse name calling.

I'll never be persuaded with a 2x4.

Ann is smart, sexy, she's the best fisker I know and I really enjoy her blog. But love? No way. I don't even think I could hang out with her for very long.

Different worlds and all that stuff. Plus, I'm a dog.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

Kev said...

Do a lot of you regular commenters come here every day but sometimes go days without commenting?

Absolutely. I'm in an itinerant teaching situation with no office and very little computer access during the workday, which can run very long, so my "vortex time" is often quite limited. I try to at least check out the threads that look interesting, but sometimes--especially during the week--sleep beckons before I can put in my two cents' worth.

He's sexy with facial hair (I love his hands) but the pot smoking is a problem. It didn't click in my head until I saw the bong photo, but now he looks just like a pothead to me. He seems immature and the type of person that thinks they need alcohol or drugs to have fun and be interesting. People who think that are usually correct. Not sexy.

raising a kid will make you except
here at the house it s tommy who is the sane

Yes. Well, not as regular as I was a few years ago. [insert lame joke]

There will be days when I'll read every post, look at the comments, but never add anything. Do you feel like your snooping or like you are a peeping tom,
No

or do you just not have anything worthwhile to add to the conversation?
Interesting lis of choices, defining the lurker as a bad, bad person. Sometimes I'm not interested in the topic. Most of the time I find the conversation uninteresting and choose not to interact with most of the commenters here.

I guess the better way to ask this is
Better for whom?

, do you ever feel like you're putting on your Comment Costume when you start to participate in a thread,
No and I'm beginning to think you have some odd hangups about this whole thing. [lame joke deleted]

or are you fine leaving one comment and then bailing out and not checking back in?
"Bailing out," again with the accusatory tone. Sometimes it's saying what you have to say and not overstaying your welcome. Sometimes it's being busy.

I think it's a commitment if you leave a comment, especially on threads of a political or controversial nature.
Good lord. Kindergarten playground politics.

You have to have balls to comment on a lot of the threads here, especially if you are a commie/liberal/pacifist.
No, you just need an opinion and a keyboard. Actually, just having a keyboard works for most of us.

I hate people who only leave one comment and then disappear.
That's a you issue.

Hey, at least Michael stays around and fights.
Enjoy yourselves.

Wait, wait, I'm late. Titus... the commenters here have obviously fallen for the Professor's brain power. But they also know in their hearts that they could never pass her required Pre-nuptial Agreement's air tight provisions which also require that they pass lie detector tests on top of their Physicals and Credit reports. So they just dream, and enjoy.

Now, now, don't be so demoralized.

1. My pre-nup would only exclude you from my wealth. Yours is your problem. YP, not MP.

2. As for physicals, you know I have said time and time again that the #1 reason I would have to remarry would be to share my health insurance benefits with someone. The sicker you are, the more I have to share.

I have the best government run health care program available, Tricare. Give the US military 20 years of your life and in return you and your wife (kids up to age 23) never have to worry about medical care again . I recommend it for all able bodied young people. If you can't get in, marry a vet.

Kinda of difficult if you are gay.. You cant get in unless you "dont tell" and .. oh yea, cant get married either.

Funny what a secure society we live in.

the only reason i would join in any type of partnership with anyone would be to share my health. period. (hehehe, just dawned on me...yea, i still get those, too, every month) I now am sure that this is the wrong blog to be commenting on. That thought, and that i am kinda green politically, wear a string bikini, and am obsessed with staying fit enough to outrun my grandchildren for the next ten years.

You obviously weren't in the service in the 70's, lean years for the military. I won't say they killed my mother (pancreatic cancer was 97% fatal), but they sure tried, for several illnesses. Mediocre and derelict doctors at Bethesda, the Navy's premier hospital for VIPs.

It took a year to straighten out the insurance repayment for a biopsy I had privately because they kept misspelling my name.
