But let's remember the original context of the quote. Richard Nixon had finally been driven out of the White House, and Gerald Ford had just taken the oath of office:
My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over. Some of us went on hating Nixon for the rest of our lives, and some of you will nurse your hatred of Bush forever. But you don't have to do that. If your candidate has won: Rejoice! Don't be ugly.
Our Constitution works; our great Republic is a government of laws and not of men. Here the people rule. But there is a higher Power, by whatever name we honor Him, who ordains not only righteousness but love, not only justice but mercy.

I actually paraphrased the quote: "our long national nightmare has just begun." Not whining, just stating an opinion. Actually this election has energized me - I love a challenge.
I agree with Deborah. Obama now has taken upon himself the task of dealing with Pelosi and Reid, the left wing of the democratic party, and all the promises made. To top that off, the economy is still rocky, the middle east is on simmer but could flare up at any time.
Now is the time to stand and deliver on the dream. I hope he can pull it off. Time to get Mavericky!
Congratulations on the win, Obama. Make us proud!
Ann,
Their long national nightmare may be over, but our long national nightmare is about to begin.
Actually, I am hopeful he will turn out to be "pragmatic". In which case, I will sleep easy while the progressives, who thought he was one of them, gnash their teeth.
George Bush declared war on gay people, thus he is forever scum in my book. Good fucking riddance.
If your candidate has won: Rejoice! Don't be ugly.
I greatly admire the politically passionate partisan . . .
The person who takes personal pride in the personal accomplishment of strangers . . .
Those who deeply care.
I figure those people have millions of friends and they never, ever, feel truly lonely.
Good for them.
It must be nice.
And Obama wasn't my man. I just wanted the ReTHUGlicans to be crushed.
And they were.
Indiana. North Carolina. Both went to the Democrats. Who woulda thought?
Several gay friends and wealthy gay donors to Senator Barack Obama have asked him over the years why, as a matter of logic and fairness, he opposes same-sex marriage even though he has condemned old miscegenation laws that would have barred his black father from marrying his white mother.
The difference, Mr. Obama has told them, is religion.
As a Christian — he is a member of the United Church of Christ — Mr. Obama believes that marriage is a sacred union, a blessing from God, and one that is intended for a man and a woman exclusively.
So, is Obama scum too, in your "book"?
Nope. Because Obama opposed proposition H8.
This country was attacked by terrorists, and rather than use it as a time to unite the country, Bush chose that opportunity as a time to divide us - and use gay people as scapegoats. Fuck him. Fuck his wife. Fuck his daughters.
I have no desire to emulate the Democratic Party in anything they do, including the manner in which they have treated our current President.
Let me make this prediction. In general, Conservatives, Republicans, and generally right of center people will be much kinder to Obama than Democrats, leftists, and liberals were to President Bush. And the bloviators and blowhards will credit this forebearance to some quality of Obama's.
So, congratulations to President Obama! May he win when he's right, and lose when he's wrong!
I'll bet downtownlad never feels lonely.
I envy him.
ReTHUGlicans impeached a Democrat over a blowjob. They accused the Clintons of murder and drug-dealing in Mesa, Arkansas. Please don't give me this shit about conservatives respecting Democrats.
Our first Muslim President. That is sooooo cool.
This country was attacked by terrorists and Bush chose that opportunity as a time to divide us - and use gay people as scapegoats.
I thought he blamed Saddam Hussein. Damn it I hate it when you guys keep changing the talking points.
You are by far the most unbalanced person I have seen on this thread. Do you have syphllis? I heard it causes insanity if it's not treated.
As a Christian — he is a member of the United Church of Christ — Mr. Obama believes that marriage is a sacred union, a blessing from God, and one that is intended for a man and a woman exclusively.
Actually, the United Church of Christ officially recognizes and celebrates gay marriages. So there is nothing in Obama's own denomination's theology that would prevent him from fully supporting gay marriage. Although as part of the reformed, congregational, tradition, individual congregations can and do not always fully support official positions of the national organization without fear of backlash--so his church might be more conservative on such issues than the national organization.
You LOST Hoosier Daddy. Get used to having a Muslim, Marxist, Black President.
HA HA!
Salamandyr has got it right.
I think the far left will be disappointed as much as the far right with Obama for the same reasons. Obama will not be the socialist that the far right in this country dream him to be.
PBS did a profile of Obama along with McCain. When Obama became president of the Harvard Law Review he appointed some Federalist Society members to mast head positions.
I predict Obama will struggle to break away from the old liberal orthodoxies and charter a new course for the Dem party.
Finally, McCain gave one of most magnanimous concession speeches I ever heard. Compare his works to what Hillary Clinton could not bring herself to do.
ReTHUGlicans impeached a Democrat over a blowjob. They accused the Clintons of murder and drug-dealing in Mesa, Arkansas. Please don't give me this shit about conservatives respecting Democrats.
Oh come on. The impeachment wasn't about a blowjob and you know it. That was the excuse because Clinton slimed his way out of charges on the dozens of other scandals that plagued his administration. Its like Al Capone got nailed on Tax Evasion because that's what would stick.
Demos have this sort of convenient memory where all the Republicans loved Clinton, then he got a bj and we all freaked out.
You LOST Hoosier Daddy.
Oh hell well at least you still can't get married here in your liberal bastions. Get used to it.
HA HA HA HA!
works=words
Time to spread the wealth around.
Time for government takeover of health care.
Time for abortion up to and including birth.
Obama's record was pretty clear. He has a mandate.
That's fine Hoosier. I ran into some Mormons today and spit in their face.
And as long as your 18 year old son keeps giving me blowjobs - I don't get too worried about it.
Yeah hoosier daddy, I have no memory at all of Bush blaming the 9-11 attacks on gays.
Maybe GWB penned a bunch of Op-Ed's in gay magazines, so they are the only ones who know his theories on how they caused 9-11.
Any ideas when Obama is bringing the troops home?
He promised to end the war so I think re-deploying to Okinawa by say, June 2009 is reasonable.
Going Galt.
Enjoy the internet while you can. Next step already promised by Chuck Schumer, the fairness doctrine.
Quote "Get used to having a Muslim, Marxist, Black President."
Bush said that gays were a threat to civilization's very existence.
I'm very, very, very happy that conservatives are miserable today.
Its not that I don't trust you on that quote there, DTL, but can you provide linkie?
You sure you aren't thinking of I'm a Dinner Jacket there?
That's fine Hoosier. I ran into some Mormons today and spit in their face.
They have Mormons in Thailand?
The young people support gay marriage overwhelmingly. The old people are against it.
As I've said many times - my favorite part of the newspaper is the obituary section.
DIE BIGOTS DIE! Then I get my rights.
What's wrong with Thailand? Care to display your ignorance a little more?
I'm very, very, very happy that conservatives are miserable today.
Actually Obama winning was what I wanted, so I'm not that miserable really. Republicans don't really let the outcomes of elections ruin our lives or drive us to despair, we're just too happy, optimistic forward looking people for that.
I'm very, very, very happy that conservatives are miserable today.
Actually I am pleased as punch. An Obama win now means that race baiting hucksters like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton need to go get real jobs now.
Going Galt.
Enjoy the internet while you can. Next step already promised by Chuck Schumer, the fairness doctrine.
You know, "going Galt" is most effective when you are actually manufacturing something, not working in the service industry. So far it seems like a bunch of "forensic psychologists", college professors, and financial advisers are the ones threatening to "Go Gault". When the CEO of Boeing, John Deere, Monsanto or Caterpillar (or hell, the engineering staffs even) announces they are "Going Galt", then I will stop laughing and start worrying.
And by the way, the fairness doctrine has nothing to do with the internet.
"DIE BIGOTS DIE! Then I get my rights"
The future is really ugly.....and immature.
"And by the way, the fairness doctrine has nothing to do with the internet."
Wanna bet?
Actually Obama winning was what I wanted, so I'm not that miserable really. Republicans don't really let the outcomes of elections ruin our lives or drive us to despair, we're just too happy, optimistic forward looking people for that.
Yeah, you better check on Simon. I think he is on suicide watch.
What's wrong with Thailand? Care to display your ignorance a little more?
Nothing is wrong with Thailand. They have great food and hot women. I just didn't think they had Mormons there.
"You know, "going Galt" is most effective when you are actually manufacturing something, not working in the service industry"
As of today my husband has no income. :-)
Wanna bet?
Yes, any amount of money you have.
No Dust Bunny - its true. I only get my rights when the old people die. There's nothing immature in taking joy at having your enemies drop dead.
And by the way, the fairness doctrine has nothing to do with the internet.
It has a lot to do with trashing the 1st Amendment.
But Hoosier Daddy thinks its fine and dandy to fine CBS half a million for showing Janet Jackson's booby.
And he thinks its ok to put producers of pornography in jail for 3 years.
As of today my husband has no income. :-)
You know, income tax fraud is not the same as "Going Galt".
I think you and Dr. Helen missed the whole point of that fascist screed Atlas Shrugged if you think that what Galt thought he was doing was merely refusing to report income to the government.

The commissioner, a 2006 President Bush appointee, told the Business & Media Institute the Fairness Doctrine could be intertwined with the net neutrality battle. The result might end with the government regulating content on the Web, he warned. McDowell, who was against reprimanding Comcast, said the net neutrality effort could win the support of “a few isolated conservatives” who may not fully realize the long-term effects of government regulation.
“I think the fear is that somehow large corporations will censor their content, their points of view, right,” McDowell said. “I think the bigger concern for them should be if you have government dictating content policy, which by the way would have a big First Amendment problem.”
“Then, whoever is in charge of government is going to determine what is fair, under a so-called ‘Fairness Doctrine,’ which won’t be called that – it’ll be called something else,” McDowell said. “So, will Web sites, will bloggers have to give equal time or equal space on their Web site to opposing views rather than letting the marketplace of ideas determine that?”
McDowell told BMI the Fairness Doctrine isn’t currently on the FCC’s radar. But a new administration and Congress elected in 2008 might renew Fairness Doctrine efforts, but under another name.
No Dust Bunny - its true. I only get my rights when the old people die. There's nothing immature in taking joy at having your enemies drop dead.
But as the old people die off, the young people slowly turn into old people. Its a vicious cycle!
But Hoosier Daddy thinks its fine and dandy to fine CBS half a million for showing Janet Jackson's booby.
I think they should have been fined for not giving me the full frontal. Giving me a tease like that and not going whole hog was just mean.
And he thinks its ok to put producers of pornography in jail for 3 years.
Only if they raise my subscription costs.
No. The young people aren't going to turn against gay marriage. As they get old, they'll just be against some future increase in freedom, because they're not used to it. Maybe something like the right to use drugs.
And that's fine - if I'm opposed to someone's freedom when I'm older - I have no qualms with the victim of my oppression praying for me to drop dead - so he can get his rights.
Fair is fair.
Max Hardcore is in jail for 46 months for producing porn.
Why isn't there an outcry over this?
http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/oct/28/adult-movie-producer-max-hardcore-must-go-prison/
Can't wait for Obama to redeploy the FBI from prosecuting porn to chasing down terrorists and criminals instead.
The problem (for you dtl) is that the current crop of young liberals will eventually get older...and become conservatives.
Some of us went on hating Nixon for the rest of our lives, and some of you will nurse your hatred of Bush forever. But you don't have to do that.
This would be more convincing if it was coming from someone who had the, shall we say "moral clarity" to hate Bush at all, instead of someone who thought he deserved reelection.
OK - I've gotten my gloating out of my system. Back to serious mode.
There's no evidence of that dbp.
Old people who grew up during Roosevelt were historically liberal. But most of them are dead.
Old people today grew up during Eisenhower. They are conservative.
The boomers are more liberal.
Compare the youth vote (18-29 years old) in this election (66-32 for Obama) to the last election (55-44 Kerry) and the Bush/Gore election (48-46 Gore).
Because of Bush, this generation of youth will likely be liberals for their whole life.
You can see on this thread why the "rise of the Left" will not last long in America....even in victory they are still filled with vile and hate. Amazing.
Donn: Yup.
Congratulations to president elect Obama. I am glad the margin of victory was convincing enough to not cast doubt on his election. I wish him well in his presidency.
I'm not LEFT Donn. Try again. I will be attacking Obama as soon as he tries to raise my taxes.
I will be attacking Obama as soon as he tries to raise my taxes.
Great, that won't take too long, I'm sure.
Yes, thanks to Bush's trillion dollar deficits, it probably won't . . . .
I'm not LEFT Donn. Try again. I will be attacking Obama as soon as he tries to raise my taxes.
Can he raise taxes in Thailand?
even in victory they are still filled with vile and hate.
Vile is traditionally used as an adjective, but whatever.
And I have much less hate for Ann than I used to :-), I'm just not about to get scolded into forgiving the Chimp and his followers just because he was so thoroughly repudiated last night.
Yes, thanks to Bush's trillion dollar deficits, it probably won't
Wanna bet the Dems do nothing about the deficit?
And of course, even four years from now you'll still be parroting the "blame Bush mantra," but it will stop resonating with voters and you'll have to try a new line.
I love Thailand Hoosier Daddy. Who doesnt? But that's not where I live.
You need to study up on Tax Law. You can't escape US taxes if you're a citizen. Even if you give up your citizenship, you still have to pay US taxes on foreign earnings.
Good morning Doyle and congratulations on the big win for your team.
Speaking for myself, I was worried when you didn't show up right away on the threads. I assumed the worst when they declared for Obama that you had an orgasm so powerfull your head imploded. Glad to see you can handle such a load.
If you give Bill Clinton a call I think he has some tips on getting those stains out of the fabric.
Again, my most heartfelt congratulations.
I don't see a President Obama trying to raise taxes, esp during a recession--doesnt make much sense at least from a Keynesian perspective--I suspect he will simply let the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010. Now what the lefties in the congress try to do is another story. In fact, I am guessing that Obama is going to have more trouble with progressives than he will with conservatives. But we shall see.
I expect Obama to shrink the deficit dramatically, although we are such a deep hole, I'm not sure if he can get us to a surplus as Clinton did.
Roger - That is what the right means by raising taxes - letting the Bush tax cuts expire.
I don't expect him to do more than that. In fact, he's only going to let the tax cuts expire for the rich. Everyone else will get a tax cut.
Unfortunately for me - I'm rich.
I have no venom left. As a liberal I got everything I wanted, Bush & co. are gone and an urban liberal(and pragmatist) won. It's beyond elation. The tension is gone.
The people here pretending to be democrats should stop lying. These are right-wing trolls, now I know. Democrats are looking forward, not trolling Althouse.
To any democrats that have lingering anger I would like to drill something into your head this morning. Without the massive failure of Bush, we would never have gotten Obama. I'll take Obama over Kerry any day.
Last night I thanked my parents and my stepmother for voting for Bush(even with the horrors he committed), they made Obama possible.
And to all the right-wing commenters here and Professor Althouse and everyone who voted for Bush in 2004, I thank you. You made this possible and I am so happy that I have cried several times. Everything happens for a reason.
And I go to MADONNA at Dodgers Stadium tomorrow night, what a celebtration that will be! The party continues, and shall for the next 4 years.
It's all good now.
God(or Buddha or Allah or Isis or Superman) bless America.
Yahoo!!!
Thanks Hoosier. I have my quibbles about the results (Prop 8, Stevens, etc) but yeah it was a good night.
I am guessing that Obama is going to have more trouble with progressives than he will with conservatives. But we shall see.
My thoughts exactly. I'm betting that Pelosi and Reid are already drawing up their wishlists.
I think Obama raised too many expectations and is going to be called on them, particularly getting out of Iraq. If we're still there a year from now, I'll be curious to see the reaction from the Kucinich-Sheehan side of the progressives.
18,000 couples in California just got their marriages taken away.
I have plenty of venom left. America still sucks and its still a bigoted country.
You made this possible and I am so happy that I have cried several times. Everything happens for a reason.
Hey, enjoy it while you can....reality is just around the corner.
I would encourage all Democrats to hasten the end of "our long national nightmare."
As I posted on another thread, from the WaPo:
Hence, the first real step of the president-elect of the United States ought to be for a forceful demand for immediate resignation of the sitting president and his vice president. The president-elect ought to enlist the media and the electorate in this call for early resignation.
I agree, and also agree with a commenter who suggested that the Dems also try the sitting president and vice president for "war crimes." Let's get the Obama administration off on the right foot!

Ooh ooh and then we can line up Bush's entire cabinet against a wall and have them shot by firing squad! OMGZORS
Wow.
I was actually going to try and say something worthwhile on this thread, but it looks like I shouldn't bother.
Great post, Ann. You said it quite well. Judging from the response, though, I think all of the Bush haters will have to die for the ugliness to be purged completely.
My brightest thought is that academia and those who follow have no further to go without being seen as the Marxist racial tension stirrers they are.
No more can they say "What do you expect from Whitey?". No more can they claim the US isn't "progressive". No more can they spout their nonsense about needing to "reeducate" the masses. All that is laid waste with the obvious facts of this campaign.
A black man with short credentials won. A man with obvious socialist leanings has won. A working mother with a disabled child was ravaged by the academics and lefts own people. Dissenters were illegally investigated by their own side. The vision of race was repeatedly proffered to the public from their party. The first lynching in effegy occurred from out of their ranks.
These things are now history and cannot be removed nor, thanks to bloggers, will be forgotten.
We will see where this will take us. I hope not far and I hope foreign interests are not too bold. We will see if the leftward vision of utopia is any more today, here, than the pipe dream based on bad opium that it has been historically proven to be elsewhere.
We will see if, next time around, a mere six percent of the voting population has decided the leftward lean was too much and votes otherwise.
Judging from the response, though, I think all of the Bush haters will have to die for the ugliness to be purged completely.
LOL. Until that day, huh?
I have plenty of venom left. America still sucks and its still a bigoted country.
That just elected it's first black president.
Keep them softballs coming buddy.
"When the CEO of Boeing, John Deere, Monsanto or Caterpillar (or hell, the engineering staffs even) announces they are "Going Galt", then I will stop laughing and start worrying."
Time to start worrying, Freder.
My company (a manufacturer) is no John Deere (really fixated on agribusiness, aren't you?), but I'm exploring the possibility of moving the company to another country. And there are hundreds of thousands of other businesses just like ours.
Card check; a $9.50 minimum wage; higher taxes for S corps; "skyrocketing" electricity costs; 7 paid sick days; a permanent 45% death tax. We'd be stupid not to look into it, as long as we pull the trigger before the "Expat Tax".
"And I go to MADONNA at Dodgers Stadium tomorrow night, what a celebtration that will be! The party continues, and shall for the next 4 years."
On the people's dime of course.
Anyway, have your fun, because reality is going to set in before you know it, and not even the tiresome amplified warbling of an aged leathery expatriate pop star will hide the misery, recession and foreign danger likely to arise in the coming years.
And remember what I said last night: Obama got elected as President of the United States, which means all of us, not just blithering spittle-flecked Madonna fans like you. Now "your people" will be in charge of safeguarding the future of "We the People" and you will be held to account, as harshly as you held the current President to account, for your failures and missteps. It will be more difficult for people to make their voices heard because "your people" have the entire apparatus of the media and now the government to act as a filter for any and all negative information. But it will come out regardless of that and you will be held accountable. If you continue your preening and prancing party and ignore the fact that you are now in charge of protecting all of our futures, you will be turned out as swiftly and mercilessly as we turned out the incumbent party last night.
Pride goeth before the fall, hubris and all that.
God bless this country and President Elect Obama. May you lead lightly and effectively. I know you progressives ain't the prayin' types, but you might want to breathe a few, just to be on the safe side. You're going to be in charge. Time to step up to the plate, turn down the Madonna, and get busy. You have no more excuses. It's time to put your ideas to the test.

What? I have to pay up because an FCC commissioner is uses scare tactics and deliberately lies at an Heritage Foundation event by conflating two entirely different issues (net neutrality and the fairness doctrine) that have nothing to do with each other in order to scare the conservatives?
Like so many statements by the Bush administration, it is hard to tell if this guy is just stupid or lying. But it is one of the two. He either doesn't know what the hell he is talking about or he is deliberately lying to sow confusion.
downtownlad sez:

Then you better start lobbying for an end to biomedical research — because old age is on the chopping block. Even without a thorough understanding of the aging mechanism (as yet), it's already happening in part — the lifespan between 2005 and 2006 (a single year) went up by four months (1/3 of a year) — nor is this atypical of recent years. Reminds me of the association in Larry Niven's S.F. “Known Space” universe where the age of admission went up by one year for every two that passed.
Once lifespan is removed as a certain number of years “barrier” (leaving accidents and disease as the limiting factor), then folks will survive according to an algorithm more like the half-life of nuclear decay — where once a person lives a certain number of years, they have just as good a chance of living that same number of years again as anybody just born.
What do you know: one of these days even old bigots will live just as long (beyond that point) as young fools.
My company (a manufacturer) is no John Deere (really fixated on agribusiness, aren't you?), but I'm exploring the possibility of moving the company to another country.
Again, you just don't get this whole "Going Galt" concept do you. The point Rand was trying to make is that if the ubermenschen refused to work the economy would grind to a halt.
All I see is a bunch of whiny libertarians who think they pay too much in taxes and think they can "stick it to the man" by avoiding or evading them.
You're supposed to just stop working, and the whole country will grind to a stop within a matter of days because we (all of us social leeches--like authors and philosophers of objectivism) will be lost without you.
What? I have to pay up because an FCC commissioner is uses scare tactics ...
Translation: No matter what evidence you present I'm not listening.
The very concept of the Federal government mandating that private broadcasters have to air certain viewpoints stinks of fascism. The fact that progressives like Kucinich and Co. push for this demonstrates that they care not a whit for free speech.
If liberals can run the table in the election then you shouldn't need to have the government force it down the throats of listeners of talk radio.
I see nothing funny about what I said, Doyle. People in this thread have been very open about hating Bush, and doing so until the day he dies, and even extending that hatred to his whole family.
I think it's a waste to hate anyone that much. I think it's better and healthier to try and work through such feelings. I would prefer that people try to focus on what unites us all rather than holding onto blind and vicious hatred, no matter what side we're talking about. But it is certainly well within anyone's rights to do so. I do not wish them ill.
I was merely making an observation. Perhaps time will prove me wrong. I hope it does.
Obama did not win last night...McCain did not lose...Bush lost. Obama was fighting against Bush the entire time and there was no way he could win against the liberal illuminati after the devasting economic turmoil that has been going on for the last 6 months.

Cheer up. Obama really has his shit together. If not, you get it back in 4 and the house in 2. But what really matters now:
don't want to grow old too fast
don't wanna let the system get me down
I've got to find a way to make the good times last
and if you show me how
I'm ready now
Where's the party?
I want to free my soul
Where's the party?
I want to lose control
Where's the party?

I should add that it's too bad that I'm expected to pay for them.
Of course I'm just as unhappy having had to pay for Bush's bad ideas, especially the current 700 billion dollar one.
dont forget the onion headline when bush came into the whitehouse in 2000:
"Our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is over"

No, it was the liberal people of California that were the last population group completely fed up with "in your face faggots" pushing agenda.
Prop 8? Two to one against saying gays must be made morally acceptable because lawyers in robes and various rump rangers and salami smokers demand it be so.
The liberal, progressive people of California grown infinitely weary of the people who once said they had a love that dared not speak its name - becoming the tiresome, unwelcome people that refused to shut up and stop imposing themselves on others.
Good riddance to gays to pushed so hard, that people got sick of their self-righteous twinking and pushed back.
****************
Obama did not win last night...McCain did not lose...Bush lost.
No, as a Republican I'd say that Obama and his team had a vision, a competent executive management of their organization, And McCain was all about "I", the great "suffering POW and nobler patriot than all other Americans", instead of a campaign aimed at what "we Americans" needed to do. And McCain ran a hapless inept executive of an organization trounced by Obama and his executive leadership at every turn.
After collapsing his 1st campaign into bankruptcy, McCain then squeaked in as abler conservatives divided their vote then ran a nearly inchorent campaign with a daily-changing, incoherent message...proving the Navy was right to pass him over as Admiral for 100 better leaders.
Now he returns to the Senate and his "dear friends", where he will work on cutting deals and again screwing people that trust him, all for the greater glory of John McCain, and his "noble ways", as he calls the trait he admires most about himself next to "bravery".
I'm about the same age as our hostess, which means I remember the 'national nightmare'.
I think the analogy is much more apt than many suppose. The Ford administration turned out to be the start of an eight year nightmare, not the end of one.
I recall the Ford and Carter years as the nadir of our economy and our national spirit.
I strongly expect that discredited and idiotic economic policies coming out of the Democrat congress will bring back double digit inflation, interest rates, and unemployment. It will probably be worse economically than the Carter years because we're starting from an economic disaster and implementing policies that can only exacerbate the problems.
When Obama raises the white flag in Iraq he vindicates OBL, who said we'd never stay the course there.
I fully expect OBL and his followers to carve out a piece of Iraq to use as a safe secure base for terrorist acts against the United States.
Why would the terrorists stay in Afghanistan where they are being opposed? They can move to Iraq where President Obama has promised to end combat operations. The Iraqis, knowing they can't count on the U.S., will agree to tolerate a base for terror as long it is directed out of Iraq and towards the United States. Who could blame them?
Combine economic thinking like that which makes the USSR the economic superpower it is today with another 9/11, and we're in an economic and spiritual depression. Which will, of course, be blamed on Bush by unhinged Democrats.
Hmm, don't be ugly, eh?
After 4,000 American soldiers dead in Iraq, our economy in ruins, UBL still on the loose, I'm not in a very forgiving mood.
Don't even compare Bush with Nixon. Nixon was at least competant.
M McNeil-
Reminds me of the association in Larry Niven's S.F. “Known Space” universe where the age of admission went up by one year for every two that passed.
The Struldbrugs.
Most prominently mentioned in "Protector".
Well, I've been rejoicing and was swept up in election night rejoicing. Hallelujah.
And I am so glad we're shutting down the ugliness of the last eight years. And we will need to speak of the ugliness, to identify what happened and what went wrong.
Maybe that way we can learn some rather expensive lessons.
But that's for later! For now! Way to go America!
Althouse wants liberals and Democrats to shut up about the Bush years. I prefer Krugman's approach on "The Monster Years."
