"It was on the third night that we found out that the octopus Otto was responsible for the chaos."

"We knew that he was bored... ... Once we saw him juggling the hermit crabs in his tank..."

I make an "octopus" tag, do a search, and discover I've already blogged 6 times about octopi.

The blogger was bored... Once we saw her juggling wireless mice at her desk.

"My feeling is recording a radio show is the same as taping a television show. As long as people aren't selling them it's legal."

"However, I doubt that it would be good policy to give the recordings away because it might stop a potential subscriber from joining up. If I owned Sirius, or any of the Pay Radio stations, I would be unhappy if people were giving away my products for nothing."

I believe octopi are the smartest invertebrates in the world.

No Obama jokes please.

Otto deserves his own movie.

MCG, amazing video, I've sent the link to the budding shark scientist in my family, who may never speak to me again.

The headline could have come straight from Gravity's Rainbow:

"...that was no "found" crab, Ace--no random octopus or girl, uh-uh" (Page 188)

Actually it's octopuses, or if you really want to be pedantic, octopodes.

Now, I would pay to see that!

When I was a child I had hermit crabs as pets. Funny little things.

The consequence of encaging wild animals into unnatural environments.

They get bored.

What would you do?

Henry Beston Author (1888-1968)

"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate for having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein do we err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings: they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth."

When I was little, I had an octopus obsession. We went into Chicago to the aquarium and when we got to the octopus tank, he was hiding behind a rock. I stood there for an hour. He never came out. It is one of the major disappointments of my life...

The undersea world is jam-packed with all sorts of clever creatures. Put them in an aquarium and nifty things will happen.

For example, I knew a guy who had a sea anemone named Jorge who could shuffle a deck of cards and then play a rudimentary form of solitaire.

I had a breeding pair of Salvini Cichlids named François Rabelais and Gretchen who watched “North by Northwest” through their glass and then later constructed an exact replica of Mount Rushmore.

Some of their smarts must have rubbed off on me as I now seem to possess the extraordinary ability to eat leftover Halloween candy for breakfast (Mounds and Twix bars washed down with a truly massive quantity of Mountain Dew) while typing out a silly comment to post on Althouse.

Juggling hermit crabs??

It'd be like a slow motion underwater freak show, the octopus's eyes focused far away, his lips... er, beak pursed in concentration, his tentacles weaving slowly as hermit crabs floated up, then down with confused looks on their faces...

:)

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many tentacles and crabs he had going at once. I mean, 8 arms... that'd beat anything you see at the circus.

----

Anyone got any pictures of that? I'd love to send one to Eggagog. It would have to be the catalyst for him to post again.
