Baseball is by FAR, my favorite game, though I do prefer minor league baseball myself. I went to around 20 minor league games this summer, and enjoyed every minute.
They are the team of my youth, but I didn't care much about baseball when I was a kid. I started following them after I moved back to PA in 1988. The '93 Phils were a great team.
One of my uncles was a diehard fan, knew all the players and stats, and collected a lot of Phils memorabilia. He died a couple of years ago. Wish that he had been here to see this series.
It's a nice touch that Charlie Manuel looks and sounds a little like my late uncle.
I went to a baseball game once. This guy hit a fly ball straight up that went soaring into the atmosphere and disappeared into a tiny dot, then after a moment, returned to Earth at supersonic speed and pounded the ground in a puff of dirt leaving a proper crater. Then, within a few minutes another fly ball comes soaring into the stands. People near me STUCK OUT THEIR BARE HANDS TO CATCH IT ! I ducked into as compact a form as possible.
Chip, you would've liked the baseball game I went to once where a foul ball bounced right out of my bare hand and was caught by the lady next to me right between her two ample breasts while she held dollar bills in either hand. The crowd roared mightily and when she went to the bar, the bartender gave her free beers because he watched the whole thing on his closed circuit monitor and, well, SHE CAUGHT THE BALL BETWEEN HER TWO AMPLE BREASTS. I kid you not, kiddo.
I well remember when the Orioles last won the World Series 25 years ago. Twas against the Phillies, and the final game was in Philadelphia. I watched from the bar at my athletic club and management sent round bottles of champagne to celebrate. We bought a few more bottles, piled into my car, put the top down, and, with the rest of Baltimore, met the team when the bus returned (they called it the I-95 Series) to the stadium. Don't remember a thing about that game, but I certainly do remember the party.
I had season tickets for then next dozen years, and then one day, lost all interest.
ricpic - you are right. phillies fans (and philadelphia fans in general) are among the trashiest in the U.S. there was a good article this week in the local paper about how ballpark officials had to use a separate service entrance for tampa fans because phillies fans were harassing kids (one particular 7 year old was apparently on the receiving end of a hurled ketchup packet). but we boo santa and throw batteries at opposing players, so that kid was probably lucky to get a ketchup packet.
still, there was less rioting and looting than expected, so not a bad night.
Congrats Philly! Hailing as a Brewers fan, I, of course was cheering for the NL team. I gotta say their new stadium is way better than the old Veteran's Stadium. And not that I was paying much attention to them, then, anyway - when the Brewers were an AL team.
My wife and son make fun of me for saying wooter, although I do not say youse.
Great to see the Phillies win, in dramatic fashion. My son suggested that they should have more 3 1/2 inning games - there was a lot of action packed into a third of a game.
Congratulations to the AJ and his Phillies. What a great series. You guys deserve all the accolades for taking all the bullshit of the suspended game. Now we can call you THE WORLD CHAMPION PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES for the rest of the year.
Did I tell you lately that the Phillies won the World Series?

Congrats to the Phillies....it's only the second time in team history to win the World Series.

Let's all have a drink of wooter to celebrate.

I am very happy for the Phillies.

Gosh, don't you wish you could be there and be one of them? Admit it: you've always wished you could run with that sort of crowd.

Congrats to the Phillies and my numerous Philly-area kin.
Congratulations to the Phillies!

I am drunk as a skunk -that is what we do in Philly when we celebrate aka riot.
And no wooter is involved.
I did say I am drunk but I am really just practicing for the parade on Friday. Heh.
Congrats Phillies!!!!!!
The curse is ended.
Elton says Philadelphia freedom shine on me, I love you
NEXT Cubbies.
Phillies fans: the worst in the world, unbelievably boorish. Make the Yanks fans, those scum, seem like angels.

The Rays do look good for the future, I must say.
