As decent as McCardle is on economics, it's only a matter of time now before it's all "Bush lied, the economy died" type of crap spewing. I give it 2 weeks.
It is not a cult of personality. McArdle and her ilk are deranged. They claim that the honorable governor of Alaska is a liar when it is evident that anyone who calls her a liar is deranged. Worse still those who are deranged arranged for members of the media (including some who are moresympathetic {check out the video at the second link} to McCain) to debunk the teleprompter matter immediately after the speech.
Polly has my vote but Nader better take him/her off the campaign trail. With food prices soaring people may begin to interpret his platform as a 'parrot on every pot'.
chuck b, what happens at the end is Nader trying to decide whether to come out as a transvestite trans-speciesite. Hey, it's a question we've all had to wrestle with. Especially us presidential candidates.
On your neighbor's parrot Fred who says la la [land]. My friend has a parrot which bit his wife savagely in the ear, cocked its head solicitously, and said, "Did that hurt?" No offense, but I think that indicates my friend's parrot is further on the spiritual journey to dressing up in a human suit and rubbing up against a human female in order to attract the attention of the voters and the press than Fred is.
Megan has repeatedly said that there's no way in hell she's ever voting for McCain, and that the only question is whether she'll vote for Obama or a third-party candidate.
So no, she isn't "neutral" and doesn't pretend to be.
Nader is like Freddy in Nightmare on Elm Street 1 through 13. "Why can't you just die and go away???"
Now you have Republicans privately agreeing that it would have been better to have Noble Algore in 2000.
Maybe Bush II would have proved himself the fuckup he is - if Texans only had 4 more years to check him out. And Republicans 4 years more to see Jeb Bush was the better Governor, a better leader and thinker, and with a half-hispanic family.
Then 2004 might have been a confused Algore who did OK but not spectacularly against the Islamoids - kept the budget under control and recovered the economy somewhat with jobs in new energy sectors, not by tax cuts for the rich. With no Iraq War.
Running against a saner, competent Republican named Jeb Bush - who had none of his brothers Fundie, Chistian Zionist, radical supply side/free trade zealots, Neocon handlers. No Wilsonian delusions. Running on fiscal responsibility, reasonable tax cuts. Beating the unlikable Algore and running as a popular President in 2008. No history of the dishonored Kerry running against the incompetent Dubya in 2004. No Black Messiah or a pol with a long history of backstabs and treachery against his own running in 2008.
Ralph Nader ruined that by being the spoiler.
Nader ruined that alternate history.
Thanks, Ralph. I join the Democrats. To see you is to hate you.
Dress up like a Panda. I hope you do. Drop from heat exhaustion in the costume. You will get no help from us, and the only water that would be poured on you to cool you off would have to pass through our kidneys first.
Actually, McArdle and I started on the same page: No way would I vote for McCain. BCRA is a deal-breaker. 1st Amendment is non-negotiable.
But the BCRA is, at least, broadly applied to everyone. Meanwhile the Barack campaign has made it clear that they have at least as little respect for the Amendment the First, by going after radio and TV stations (and YouTube) to get things--particularly the Ayers stuff--suppressed.
So, in McCain's case, you have a misguided attempt to fight corruption, and in Obama's you've got misguided attempts at self-preservation.
Palladian said... Wow, quite a rich fantasy life you have going there, C-ford. But we all knew that already, didn't we?
Somehow, I think it quite pales to yours, Palladian. Where you can both detest Nader AND envision yourself happily on your knees suckling away on his Lebanese sausage.
blake: please provide more information on BHO suppressing things on Youtube. Youtube and/or CNN deleted my (highly relevant) response to one of their debate videos, but that was on the GOP debate and it was either CNN or Youtube or both that did it. But, I haven't heard about anything involving BHO.
As for the Nader video, I didn't watch it but I read a summary. And, I guess that Althouse isn't one of the parrots I guess Nader is refering to but is rather more like a cross between a loud cricket and Goldie Hawn.
Perhaps Althouse should review fundamental American concepts and then decide whether it's in the U.S.'s best interests to allow people like RonPaul, Nader, BobBarr, McKinney, etc. into debates.
As it is now, the U.S. only has one more party than the Soviet Union, and "both" parties are united on a variety of things.

That was just weird and ridiculous and boring. I couldn't finish it. What happens at the end?
I like the parrot tho'. My neighbor has a parrot named Fred. He goes, "la laaaaa, la laaaaa".
It looks like Megan McCardle might be buying into PDS:
http://meganmcardle.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/09/palindrones.php
"hy is Sarah Palin lying about having gone off teleprompter?"
I guess she'd been harassed enough by her liberal friends and just couldn't stay moderate anymore.
With ads like that it's no wonder he's not getting any press.
If this is legit, another new low has been reached.
Palin's email hacked?
I like parrots, so I'm voting Nader. Considering the choices we have, it's as good a reason as any to vote for a candidate.
Sheesh, and just when Megan was starting to make real sense on economics (she still does).
Do you suppose Andrew is contagious over there?
Ann, get with the pogram! If you're going independent you have to go with Barr.

Nader gets more pathetic and dishonest as he gets older.
He's in NOLA today, speaking at Tulane University. What a waste of speakers' budget money.
I guess she'd been harassed enough by her liberal friends and just couldn't stay moderate anymore.
Or she's being actually, ruthlessly neutral.
So it begins again: critique the GOP cult of personality and you're "deranged." That well is running out of water.
Ralph Nadar is unsafe at any age.
Beth:
So, it's ok to dive off into the cliff of PDS to appease one's liberal friends.
I thought Althousians loved Nader, if not him there never would be a President W? Are you all that ungrateful?
Beth,

Classic. Having the President of the United States speak at Tulane is a waste of speakers' budget money.
I'll champion "free" health care if it means we can get the Democrats some help.
8 years of BDS
12 years of PDS
The mental stress alone has to shave 3 years off their lifespan.

Heh. That's kind of amusing, actually - although I half expected him to say at the end: "and, live from New York, it's saturday night!"
Fen, it's Ralph Nader speaking at Tulane.
Beth, just a quick look but this looks like a campaign event, not something paid for by the university or a university organization.
Speaking of the olden days, here is Ralph Nader. I am surprised he did not bring up the Corvair.
Fen, it's Ralph Nader speaking at Tulane
Ah. My bad.
Beth, what if it was Bush? Waste of money?
Would Bush be paid to speak somewhere like that? Can a sitting President earn speaking fees?
Hamlet Prince of YouTube
I found it gently amusing and rather clever. I was surprised at how well he delivered his lines...the parrot and Ralph!
We were thinking about planting some bamboo as a barrier for our yard, but were concerned that it might attract pandas, so we put a fence up instead.
I doubt a sitting Prez has ever been paid for giving speeches. Though I bet a few have been well compensated in some under the table way.
in some under the table way.
My mind is in the gutter. You can guess what I thought of here.
Or she's being actually, ruthlessly neutral.

Forget Nader, I'm voting for the bird.

That's the first video I've ever seen featuring a presidential candidate and every single one of his supporters.

I wouldn't be so sure... the parrot may have just been earning a paycheck.

And who.

Which is worse?
I voted straight Lib in the '90s and '00s, except for Perot and Schwarzenegger.
The Libs seem to be getting crazier, tho'. But if they never win, does it matter?
Churchill was right about one thing: Democracy sucks.

It's so obvious that the bird is a corporate stooge. The beady eyes. It's all in the beady bird eyes.
By all means, vote for Hussein if you want to destroy America.
