Palin dealt Obama a thousand cuts last night. The guy is gonna need some antibiotic and stitches I think. Win or lose this election - and I think McCain/Palin will win - she is going to be on the national scene from now on. If I had to bet I would bet on her being the first woman president, not Hillary.
Agree absolutely with D. I doubt that Senator McCain picked Gov Palin for other than to shore up the base--Simon and I have been making that point since last friday--but what John McCain did was reposition the republican party for the next 20 years--he has catapulted a reaganesque figure into national prominance whose values and charisma are going to attract a whole new type of "republican." I am sure that was not his thinking, but Gov Palin is now the front runner in all subsequent presidential contests for the next 8 years
She looked and sounded more professional and experienced last night than any of the other professional politicans. She deleted and erased their trailer trash opinions of her and forced them to view her in a bright new light; the light of respect.
Peter, there were three memes that were clinging to her like saran wrap this weekend.
A) That she was a Beauty Queen
Suggestion: she was nothing but an empty-headed bimbo John Boy chose because she was easy on the eyes for the next 4 years.
B) That was po-white-trash.
Wasilla schamilla, cried the Beltway Doyennes. She and her tawdry small town family and their mooseburgers are NOT ready for primetime.
C) That because of these two other facts, that she could be had if you pushed her enough -- like making up rumours and going after her kids. Why she would be gone within week's end!!
You don't hear one single crack along these lines today, not even from Senator Biden who jovially did the rounds of the talk shows, this morning.
She proved last night that you better not mess with Momma Bear.
I heard that before last night, of course, but I thought they were bluffing.
Given the magnitude of Palin's filleting of Obama last night, I think it's safe to say they had been working on that line of attack in earnest since Friday.
Like Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Obama she is a natural on the stump. She still has a very hard month (at least) ahead of her. As Peggy Noonan said - "...they are going to have to kill her, and kill her quick." This could still end very badly for the Republicans, but the upside got a lot more likely last night. As has been said elsewhere picking her may have been a losing gamble, but it no longer looks like a stupid gamble.
Victoria--doesnt apply much in Miami, but for those of us that like getting into the woods, the fundamental rule is never get between a mama bear and her cubs
So I guess we'll just stipulate that it doesn't really matter whether she was being honest about the earmarks she grubbed for Alaska, several of which were singled out by McCain as particularly wasteful; the lobbyist she hired to represent Wasilla in Washington; her being for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it; etc. Let's marvel that she can b*llsh*t about her record without the aid of a teleprompter!
I am very curious as to what the Obama folks are going to do about her--they have created a hero and a rock star; what do they do now? they should have ignored her, but they chose the absolutely wrong strategy--if you were Obama, what would you do now?
Why, pray, can't Obama sound like her EVEN ONCE? Just one teency reference to getting a cup of joe at Starbucks, or reading some flimflam dentist office magazine.
Something anything that humanises him and makes us believe he's "one of us"?
Because that's precisely what the eBay remark did for her, instantly.
My mother texted me during the speech, she does eBay just like me.
Sarah Palin is anything but common. But man does she have something priceless in a public figure -- the common touch.
Wow. I don't even know what that means. But I'll take it as an acknowledgment that no, it doesn't matter that Palin was demonstrably dishonest about her record and Obama's proposals. Doesn't sound like a whole new type of Republican to me.
I've done ebay in the past -- I think I've sold about $1500 worth of stuff, and bought about $200 -- but the requirement that they're instituting that you have to accept payment by paypal or a cc is totally turning me off to it. Back to garage sales I guess.
Sarah Palin's speech did not make the front page of the local paper (a 911 story did -- but that's been a hot topic here for months, since an undergrad was murdered after a 911 call went unresponded to). I don't know if Biden's speech made the front page (I was out of town) -- and I don't know how deadlines play into it.
The only Palin story on the front page was a story that suggested parents use Bristol Palin's pregnancy as a springboard for talking about sex and consequences.
Kovacs--you continue to miss the big picture, and it doesnt make a bit of difference what you think (or what I think)--both Obama and Biden are unreconstructed liars, as is McCain; Palin less so, I believe.--Thats politics--here's the big picture: Palin connected big time with middle America--all of the crap your are trying to throw doesnt matter because thats not what its all about. Bring up these points all you want. It simply doesnt matter to the voters. Voters dont vote on issues--they vote on atmospherics and intuition. And Palin nailed that stuff last nite.
Simon said... I'd say that if McCain's the general who will chase bin Laden "to the gates of hell," he's found the lieutenant who we'd follow there too.
Quayle said... I'd pay real money to know what Bill Clinton was thinking last night as he watched palin.
Do you suppose Bill and Hill watched it together?
There is not enough courage in theworld to have been in the same room with Hillary during and after that speech. I would bet there is nothing left of the room and the TV is destroyed. She has to be the angriest woman alive about now.
"The only Palin story on the front page was a story that suggested parents use Bristol Palin's pregnancy as a springboard for talking about sex and consequences."
Not a bad idea really - she's giving up a lot of opportunities and potential experiences to have the baby. I'm glad she's having it - though I oppose the criminalization of abortion (or anything else that creates a law millions of people won't obey), I frankly despise it for anything less than rape or incest - and she's lucky to have a good family to help her. I suspect that the reason she is holding Trig at a lot of events is that her mom told her something along the lines of "You better get used to doing this".

I'm an only child, but I have loads of cousins. I know from experience that everyone takes turn holding the baby. There is usually one kid, though, who seems to dote on the baby more than others -- usually the very eldest child. If Levi Johnson weren't there, Bristol would've had most of the baby holding duties, instead of sweet Piper (America's little sweetheart).
It may discomfit types like Andrew Sullivan to see said baby go around like a fire brigade bucket, but that's how it works in families.
The rabid left will walk into every trap--if there are any left unsprung--in order to smear her. They will (have) revealed their character.
You know, when all the crazy Clinton stuff was going around, the right had the advantage that not many (if any) were going to air the paranoid fantasies of their most rabid members, except to (correctly) mock them.

I think a lot of people met a genuine unfiltered conservative woman for the first time last night.
It wasn't quite what they were expecting.
The lipstick crack was priceless!

And don't forget the eBay one, which brought down the house, Peter!
BTW, I found Sarah Palin's eBay Feedback.
It might shock you to know what she's sold.
Cheers,
Victoria

Ann, due to the 700+ you probably didn't see my comment on the new John McCain premium ad, you must've approved.
Upon closer inspection, I realised something curious.
Support John McCain

Are these his qualifications or detractions?

Rick Davis, McCain's chief campaign manager, said he couldn't believe when Obama came out with that sniffy "mayor of 9,000 people" communiqué. Apparently, the campaign were salivating at the prospect of making experience an issue.

Absolute classics the eBay and lipstick quips. I sure the hell would not want to submit an inflated travel voucher to her Administration!

Or do you suppose Hill felt the vibes in the room, and walked out in disgust?

I think he saw it as a way to rip the guts out of the obama blue collar middle America Union vote.
You are going to see Palin non-stop in PA, OH, MI, MN, WI, maybe Indiana and Iowa.
she'll dazzle them. and give a stump speach cut down from this one
priceless
PA, OH, MI, MN, WI
She mentioned everyone of these states, plus W. Virginia, in her speech.
Canny, Drill SGT, yes?
Oops, no she didn't mention Wisconsin.
She has nice skin, too.
