"A black McCain - a sort of Colin Powell type figure - versus a white Obama - a sort of leftist Adlai Stevenson - would win in an absolute landslide."
Nice comment, on a post over at Volokh, on the same Randy Kennedy op-ed that we were talking about yesterday.

The Weekly Standard's Noemie Emery,
06/23/2008, Volume 013, Issue 39:
"It's Not Race, it's Arugula":
"[L]et us imagine a different candidate, one who looks like Barack Obama, with the same mixed-race, international background, even the same middle name. But this time, he is Colonel Obama, a veteran of the war in Iraq, a kick-ass Marine with a "take no prisoners" attitude, who vows to follow Osama bin Laden to the outskirts of Hell. He comes from the culture of the military (the most color blind and merit-based in the country), and not the rarefied air of Hyde Park. He goes to a church with a mixed-race congregation and a rational preacher. He has never met Bill Ayers, and if he did he would flatten him. He thinks arugula is a town near Bogota and has Toby Keith on his favorites list. Would he strike no chords at all in Jacksonian country? Does anyone think he would lose 90 to 9 in Buchanan County? Or lose West Virginia by 41 points? For those Jacksonians who would be fine with a black man in the White House (not as tiny a group as Newsweek thinks), Colonel Obama is the one we are waiting for. When we will get him is anyone's guess.
I would vote for Colonel Obama in a Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen lunch break minute!
Cheers,
Victoria
I tend to agree.
And if the sides were reversed, the left would be bashing the right for nominating an unqualified Uncle Tom.
Blake, and isn't the opposite true about Palin?
If she had a "D", instead of an "R" as her Party affiliation, don't you think many Democrats today would be creaming themselves?
And don't anyone give me that bull about religion, and the guns, and the abortion. There are plenty of Democrats who share mirror images of her views.
It would've been hailed as the awesomest ticket in American history ever.
Err, my scenario doesn't include the existence of Hillary, obviously. If a woman like Palin had been chosen over Hill, there would've been riots.
There might yet be...

Oh, of course. And, in fairness, a lot of Reps would be attacking her lack of experience. Well, maybe. I sure don't remember a word from anyone about Edwards.

It's folly to discuss substance. We're well past substance in this election. Possibly past it in history.
It would've been hailed as the awesomest ticket in American history ever.
Sure. Imagine Obama/Hillary. Though, it really should've been Hillary/Obama. Then, instead of the Reps looking at 12-16 years of promising White House occupation, it'd be the Dems.

Obama's mistake was out-gunning Hillary. He should have bowed out and been Veep. Then we'd all be talking about how his VP role would set him up for the future. (And it would have.)

Would it ever.
Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that Hillary would've chosen Obama as Veep? Because I think it would've been a certainty. She's that kind of cynical politician
Like JFK and Reagan, that type always go with the best ticket they can, even if they don't like their No. 2, and indeed, probably disagree with him at lot.
100% white Obama = John Edwards
Hillary/Obama, Obama/Hillary.
Winning ticket, strong maybe. I guess it would be cool to some to have two people who have little experience or qualifications; but what the hell. History must be made and that is the improtant thing; more important than anything.
I believe very strongly that but for Hillary Clinton, we'd not have Palin on the ticket now. She waged a good fight, got better as the campaign wore on, saw it through until the end and all the while made the idea of woman-as-president plausible. McCain had enough tactical smarts to capitalize on the idea.
Colin Powell might do well, but it is ludicrous to refer to Colin Powell as a "black John McCain."
Clinton was tenacious. Too bad she was such a whiner.
NewsWeek Cover . Ugh.
If the political parties reran the primaries today, would the outcomes be the same?
Would a McCain-Powell hold greater appeal? Too militaristic?
How about an Obama-Powell ticket?
Absolutely.
Imagine if Colin Powell had run in 1996 and won.
With his military background, would we have had 9/11?
(Anyway, "Black McCain"! That was the title of a 1974 movie starring Isaac Hayes and Jim Brown...RIP, big guy....
It's hilarious that the only viable black Republican you guys can think of is Colin Powell--a man who was used and betrayed by the Bush administration to shill false intelligence to the UN and regrets that he was so credulous.
He is the only one in the entire corrupt and deceitful Bush Administration with any integrity. The only problem is that he discovered how poorly he had been treated and stayed loyal too long. He rediscovered his integrity too late to stop the war.
Colin Powell is not a black McCain. Powell turned against the war once he discovered the lies and fabrications used to justify it.
Why do you think you haven't heard from him?
"Republicans, for blacks in theory."
Why doesn't Powell run? Why doesn't Rice? Where's Michael Steele? He got passed over as head of the RNC.
All three know the reason and they don't run based on that knowledge.
How well did Alan Keyes do in the republican primaries these last 20 years?
He's as prolife as you get and smarter than anyone else in the room.
...How about this.
If alan keyes were a white man he would have been the nominee in 1996.
He's as prolife as you get and smarter than anyone else in the room.
He loses to white Democrats. He loses to black Democrats. If Martians landed on Earth and ran for Congress, he'd find a way to lose to them, too.
He might be smart, but the public doesn't want him in office.
I spoke with tenants of mine in a rual part of the state. a couple in their 60's.
The wife's mother is a yellow-dog democrat...literally, their whole family has for generations voted for anyone with a D after their name.
This lady's mother is voting republican because Obama is black.
This talk of a "black McCain" is delusional.
haha VSpurs: "Toby Keith"....so what you're saying if america produces a black politician who walks and talks like a God-fearing-secessionist-southerner instead of an educated-elite-northerner (you know...the type that freed the slaves.)
....then america would vote for him. HAHAHAHAHA.
Why not just say, "When hell freezes over?"
Hey, UWS guy--
When the North freed the slaves, where'd they free them to?
Not sure what you're getting at blake, no offense, help me out.
The "black McCain" is the right-wings magic negro Save your green-mile fantasies for another movie.
I'm getting at the fact that there are still plenty of blacks down South, and a lot of 'em are, in fact, rednecks.
That is, they share a lot of traditional conservative values with their non-black neighbors. Church-goin', abortion-hatin', flag-wavin, country-music-lovin' folk.
I don't find that any harder to accept--and I don't think the people of America would find it any harder to accept--than an Alaskan moose hunter.
Whoa, dude.
I wouldn't be throwin' around "magic negro"s if my candidate were Barack "gonna heal the planet" Obama.
heh.
They most certainly are not "rednecks", ask Sara Palin's son in law.
I see.
So, it doesn't matter if I talk to blacks who self-identify as rednecks, because of the husband of the potential future VP's daughter.
I'm not reading their thoughts, they tell me in plain English their bigotry. They apologize and say they know it's wrong, but they're honest and in every other area of their life are good folk.
Her mother would have voted for Hillary. The Clintons knew what was coming and I didn't believe them.
Bill and Hill were crazy I thought, but they knew and the democratic party leaders didn't want to believe them.
McCain will win in a landslide of rural yellow-dog democrats.
This dialogue happened this morning by the way in their grocery store. Which is why I'm harping on it.
John McCain is no Colin Powell.

Alan Keyes. Yeah, the guy who got destroyed by the Magic Negro for the Illinois Senate seat.
If Alan Keyes were White he wouldn't even be at the level of Mike Huckabee as a possible Republican nominee.
The only guy with a lamer resume than Alan Keyes is.......well is Barack Obama.

Yeah, this election is all about the attitudes of 18 year old kids from Alaska.
What is with your obsession with these terrifying "rednecks"? Do you think they are going to come out and lynch you and your buddies after the election?
Ever since Palin was picked you've been on here obsessing hysterically about apartheid, segregation, lynchings, anti-miscegenation laws, Whites only water fountains, Nazis, hate crimes, "rednecks...
Look creepy, if your boy Obama loses it will be because he punked out and picked an old White man who has been in the Senate for nearly 15 years longer than John McCain. He had every opportunity to select a younger female governor or Senator. Despite being mister change he went with more of the same.
I know you are haunted by Big Scary Racist White Men but the polls are shifting toward McCain because non threatening, hopeful White women are identify with Sarah Palin. They will make the difference.
Guy, get help I'm serious. You have a severe mental problem and hiding behind your wine is no answer.
