The Democratic Convention.

7:??: I'll do a little live-blogging... as suits my mood.

7:58 Central Time: I'm just settling in to watch. I've got everything TiVo'd and I'm scrolling along. Has it started yet? This last hour seems to be very Nancy Pelosi-oriented. I don't think this part is supposed to count for much. I'm fast-forwarding like mad. Ehghgd! It's Jimmy Carter!

8:19: Caroline Kennedy is a terrible speaker, but her speech makes me cry nonetheless.

8:30: We've seen a film about Teddy Kennedy. It focused on his love for the sea. He encounters the sea on a beautiful yacht, with his elite family. But he's dying. I don't know what to think. It's supposed to be about Barack Obama and the future of the Democratic Party, but I'm hearing bathos about the sea... and then there is this terribly rich man with his yacht. But we are called to celebrate him. He's dying. We see that in the tear that Maria Shriver brushes off her razor-sharp cheek. Ah, woe beyond politics! But now he's speaking. He wants health care for everyone.

8:35: "Barack Obama will close the book on ... straight against gay." Now, why would that be? I wonder. Teddy imbues Barack with powers.

9:48: "And that is why I love this country," says Michelle Obama.

9:58: Those kids are cute! "I love you, Daddy!"

7:12, next morning: I barely watched the post-Teddy stuff. Just not in the mood. I should check out Michelle's speech on line today. I did see the parading of the cute kids. It seemed pretty clear to me that the younger girl had been coached to cry out "I love you, Daddy" when she saw her father on the video screen, because she did it repeatedly. I think a kid behaving naturally would be really intimidated to find herself on the stage and would cling to the mother, who is there on the flesh. A big head of your father on a video screen in front of a huge audience is a very weird thing. I don't think it would make a little kid call out "I love you, Daddy." If she'd say anything, it would be to the mother: "Why is Daddy on the screen?"

Anyway, I see there are a lot of comments on this post, and that some of the commenters got mad at each other sometime around midnight. It's not easy, dropping in this morning, to figure out why. Did you drink too much blog? I'll just say I hope you all kiss and make up.

Here are some of the best commenters you can find online.

I absolutely agree with this. Some of the best commenters you can find online are here. There's a special dynamic here; the proprieter provides an excellent salon climate. Very rare indeed.

I rarely check any other blog other than Althouse's.

In contrast, I have checked--nay, read!--many, many, many blogs, many, many regularly, along with their comments sections. And while I check and read fewer comments sections, and read a greater proportion of blogs via feed than I used to, those are relative things. Overall, I think my following of such is formidable.

***

Odd, I think, that someone who states "I rarely check any other blog other than Althouse's" can be so definitive about all things blogosphere, including comments sections.

Odder still is that someone could think that it's a greater mark of loyalty to operate within such a narrow sphere, without--and by choice--other inputs, than to operate within a large sphere, and yet come back, come back, come back again--knowing full well what else is out there, and yet choosing to come back.

Well, 'how bout that.

So it goes, with different POVs.

I'm not sure what to make of this. It's like you are ignoring the possibility that I've been online for 18 years (which you can't have known until now), reading blogs for 5 and blogging myself for 3 (the latter of which you must know).

That I choose Althouse today exclusively for my blog-reading habits, doesn't mean I've been giving John Travolta a run for his Bubble-Boy money. I am a registered user in all kinds of blogs, but after a while I have learnt to separate the wheat from the chaff. Consider yourselves shucked.

And by "risk", I meant commenters who don't take into account a respected blogger's reputation into account, will be summarily reminded of it -- effectively squelching a credible retort.

I'm glad, in a way. It shows loyalty and a sense of justice to rise up and defend someone you think the other party is misconstruing or being unfair to.

Which is precisely what I was doing for our commenters here.

Thank God 7 Machos closed the thread. Let's hope Night 2's commentary thread will lack the self-righteousnous, not just from others, but from me too.

P.S.: Fair warning, I'm going after Hillary's thunder thighs from word go.

Great. Now Ruth Anne has deleted all her replies on this thread, and for all I know, she is so upset she's leaving Althouse entirely.

One of the best commenters on here, slapped around like a nobody, for what amounts to shooting from the hip.

This doesn't come from one solitary incident. It builds up, you know. And it's awful to feel misunderstood and vilified when you're just expressing yourself in a place you thought others knew you better than that.

Ugh.

Bet your life there's something killing you.

No one's getting out of here alive"

I just saw the highlights. My Foo Fighters' reference above notwithstanding, good on the old lion. He looked and sounded great.

Mexico will probably reclaim this country that was so brutally stolen from them years ago.

I had no idea that Indiana was once part of Mexico.

The dwindling number of white people will have to be rounded up and deported back to Europe FROM whence they came.

Yet even more evidence that liberals are the true Nazis. Your mask is slipping there Adolph.

Awright ladies, time to calm down a bit, or take your spat offline.

Anyone prepare breakfast yet?

Ted Kennedy's formerly good speech cadence is apparently a victim of his brain surgery. Not unexpected, I suppose, but very jarring to hear.

Yeah, but I think we make allowances for that. I wasn't as surprised as some that he spoke only because I'd thought - maybe wrongly - that he was already back in the Senate. Could have sworn that there was some news story about his return weeks ago.

"I think racial animus will probably sink Obama's campaign."

I think Obama will probably sink Obama's campaign, myself.

"Some day, a black or Mexican will be president of the United States, but that will happen most likely when the demographics change and the high latino birthrate overwhelm the caucasians."

It'll happen when a moderate or conservative is nominated. What sinks Obama is his politics and his utter vacuity, not his skin color.

"Mexico will probably reclaim this country that was so brutally stolen from them years ago."

You mean "their" land that Cortés so brutally stole from the Aztecs and Maya? Do grow up.

"The dwindling number of white people will have to be rounded up and deported back to Europe FROM whence they came."

Ah, fascist authoritarianism coupled with pride in ignorant malapropism. What a charming fellow you are.

Simon, he did come back for a day to cast a vote (for cloture, I think) on a children's health insurance bill.

Trevor - oh, it was only for a day? Okay, I misunderstood. I thought he was "back," so to speak.

Commenting after 200 is the best! It keeps out the riff-raff. I mean, Trumpit probably can't even open a door, so the likes of him certainly aren't going to find their way in here.

Nothing, as usual.

I did not watch, so I am curious. How was Hillary dressed? Was it fashionable for the occasion or did she wear one of those dowdy trailer park pants suits she is famous for?

Hillary

“There is no doubt in anyone's mind that this is Barack Obama's convention," Clinton told reporters. And yet, she said, some of her delegates "feel an obligation to the people who sent them here" and would vote for her.”

At 60, she could easily chase her dream in a future White House contest, activating the fierce loyalists and the women who dreamed of a female president — and perhaps calling in an IOU from a future President Obama.

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that it is Hillary's convention she was thinking. What IOU from Obama? What does he owe her? If anything she owes him; for keeping her in the spotlight. Obama owes her and her husband nothing. I hope he makes that clear after he is nominated.

MadisonMan said...

Two things would really help her in the future. One, WJC dies. He is a tremendous burden for her in a campaign. She should also sponsor some truly groundbreaking legislation. As they say, time will tell.

Victoria -- I'm amazed that "yecch" seems to be the worst thing you've heard around here! LOL.

If Althouse commenters can dish it out, they can surely take it.

As with most things in life, many can and others can't.

If it would get Ruth Anne to come back, I would leave forever.

Nothing you wrote last night struck me as strong or pointed enough to cause any person to disappear in response.

It that's what Ruth Anne would want, I hope you wouldn't. And I have a hard time thinking Ruth Anne would be of that frame of mind.

Beth said...

And why assume Ruth Anne needs to "come back"? VB opined "for all I know" that she's packed up and gone. That means nothing.

I didn't see anything untoward about Amba's remarks. What on earth is going on around here?

oh i give up: no doubt that will make everything better and easier.

Way to go with evoking the whole "on-the-rag-thang" as an explanation (ahem: excuse). And the "community" for support of that.

For my part, I'd rather own being a bitch as an individual six ways to Sunday and back, no matter how painful. So I have, so I do and so I will.
