"[Obama] gave a very good speech on race relations, but he did not address the fact that this man is up there spewing hatred."
No word yet about how Obama's white grandmother liked the way he equated her occasional private remarks — whatever they were — with Jeremiah Wright's years of stoking hatred as he led a large attentive crowd.

I was an Obama supporter until I heard that speech. It's just totally, massively uncool to call out your grandmother as a racist to the whole world! She's his grandma, and it's just wrong. Don't drag your family members through the mud for the sake of your own campaign. If Obama is such a great orator he could have found a different way.
Aw poor Geraldine! All she did was call Obama an affirmative action candidate, and she's tarred as a racist! Life just ain't fair.
And Kyle, why do you care so much about Obama's grandmother? Who are you to say what he can and can't reveal about his own family?
His point about his grandmother was that he loves her in spite of her backward racial views. But there are people who have backward racial views. They exist. Really.
Jesus H Christ, I thought you were boring when you wrote short things, Doyle. Three paragraphs is unbearable!
I was an Obama supporter until I heard that speech.
Me too! In fact I was a Clinton supporter till I read Ferraro's interview in the Torrance Daily Breeze, which I read online every day! And I was a McCain supporter till I saw him publicly embrace Catholic-hater "Rev" Hagee!
Just call me easily reactive, I guess. My only Presidential choices left by now are Ron Paul or Nader.
And Kyle, why do you care so much about Obama's grandmother? Who are you to say what he can and can't reveal about his own family?
I think one cares because it's unfilial, and shows poor character on Obama's part.
There are circumstances where you are obliged to criticise your family in public, but that was completely gratuitous, and the attempt at moral equivalence just made it worse.
That said, I'm sure his grandmother isn't going to go out and complain about her grandson. I mean, that would drag her down to his level.
I'm of the opinion that Geraldine Ferraro likes seeing her name in print.
To think after all this time what I say matters! That's what I'm thinking she's thinking. If there was only 1 microphone is a roomful of press, and she and Chuck Schumer walked in, who would talk more?
I'm still glad I voted against her when I had the chance.
Hey Ann, look! I've got my own troll!
You need one, since you're such a failure at being one yourself, Doily.
I'm of the opinion that Geraldine Ferraro likes seeing her name in print.
Yeah I agree. She's also too daffy to realize she's embarrassing herself. Kinda reminds me of Ann that way...
Them's fighting words.
Yah, all the conservative blogs have been posting "Throw granny under the bus" threads for the last 24 hours.
*laughs*
Doily? Good one. Why don't you tie that in with your little lace panty fantasy from yesterday. I'm sure if there's something funny there, you'll find it.
"To equate what I said with what this racist bigot has said from the pulpit is unbelievable," said Geraldine Ferraro.
Heh, that moral equivalency stuff is a real bitch isn't it.
And now we even see folks like Doyle coming down on a fellow liberal.
/me pops a Budweiser
Man it don't get no better than this.
"Why don't you tie that in with your little lace panty fantasy from yesterday. I'm sure if there's something funny there, you'll find it."
Is there something funny in your lace panties, Doily?
Ooh. I was wrong.
I mean, I'm sure there is something funny tied in your lace panties, but I don't know if I could find it, my eyesight not being what it was.
Imagine if in 1962 CBS Radio did a man-on-the-street interview with a Mr. Theophilus "Bull" Connor of Birmingham, Alabama, seeking his opinion of Gov. Wallace, but failed to identify his place of employment.
What would we have thought?
Stupid and dishonest? Yes.
Yesterday here is what NPR did—
In a "Morning Edition" report on Sen. Obama's membership in Rev. Wright's church, the reporter sought the opinion of Melissa Harris-Lacewell, a Princeton University associate professor of politics and African-American Studies. She characterized Rev. Wright's overall approach as "a message of compassion." Later, she also said his message was no different, really, from that of Dr. King. (I know she said "message of compassion" because I wrote it down; it's possible the other person interviewed in the spot may have made the King comparison.)
Writing on March 17, 2008, at "TheRoot.com," Prof. Harris-Lacewell characterized America as engaging in "terrorist rule" and added:
"American democracy has always coexisted with vicious, state-sponsored racism."
Clearly, she believes that today the U.S. is a "vicious" "state-sponsor" of racism "always."
She also acknowledged in her Root essay that she attended Wright's church "dozens of times" over a seven year period.
Do you think NPR said she had attended that church "dozens of times"? No, nor did the spot identify her as a regular NPR "Contributor."
Then, to my amazement, she pops up in the new Newsweek in its article on Wright. That piece says that she attended Wright's church "for a time."
For "a time"!
It quotes her saying "Trinity has the learning and the burning...I really see Trinity for Barack as being part of his continuing adult choice to be a black man."
She might as well be a spokesperson for the church, but she's not identified that way. It's like William Shirer asking a certain Dr. Paul J. Goebbels of Berlin for his opinion of the National Socialist Party.
How stupid do these news organizations think we are?
(Finally, NPR basically blamed the controversy on Fox News.)
Doyle: "His point about his grandmother was that he loves her in spite of her backward racial views."
She should just be greatfull to have had the honor of even knowing the great man. Even though she--like all of us, are really unworthy to be ruled by one so great and good.
Maybe if you watch an Obama speech for a few minutes, it might be easier to find. Not much easier, mind you...
Per Alicublog's Roy Edroso:
"Sometimes people ask me why I don't write about Althouse much any more. I usually shrug it off by saying she hasn't been that interesting lately, but that's just an evasion; the real reason is existential dread. When I encounter one of her synaptic fireworks displays, I begin by wondering how such a thing could possibly exist, and soon proceed to wondering why blogs exist, then why writing does, and finally I am reduced to grim contemplation of the meaninglessness of all existence. I choose not to stare into the Althouse, in other words, lest I find the Althouse staring back."
Took while to articulate it, but says it all, really.
I'll say what I say earlier -- that speech has a hole in the center.
Obama has no problem sacrificing his Grandmother to atone for the sins of his pastor.
But what of his own sins? Has he nothing to say about his own prejudices and misconceptions?
In a speech populated with real and stock characters -- his grandmother, Wright, Ferraro, angry whites, angry blacks -- the character of Obama makes no appearance. He stands apart, self-justified.
If it showed great character for Obama to refuse to condemn the racist preacher or any specific remarks of his, because Obama stood by his own, what does it mean that he won't stand by his grandmother?
Also: Jeremiah Wright is black. He's the head of a black congregation. Let's just point out the obvious: he wouldn't be where he is today if he wasn't BLACK.
She should just be greatfull to have had the honor of even knowing the great man.
Maybe Obama thinks he's great. Maybe he doesn't. I don't care. We've had a humble (or at least stupid-sounding) president and he's governed like a Roman emperor.
"But there are people who have backward racial views. They exist. Really."
And, gasp, some of them aren't even Republicans!!!!
Ti-Guy, thanks for the enlightenment. Roy is unhappy because I laughed about Stuff White People Like listing Barack Obama. White people want to be left alone to enjoy their Obama-love without other white people thinking anything mean about them. What fine good people you are to admire Barack Obama! Please feel very very good about yourselves. You deserve it. Not like that terrible grandmother. Good for you!

Like most people who no longer matter, she is searching for relevancy because she just cannot stand to be considered irrelevant. It is an overblown ego and sense of self worth thing. It is the "I am somebody syndrome." Her fifteen minutes of fame was not enough.

It has been said that the most dangerous thing one can do is to get between Chuck Shumer and a microphone. There would be a fight of monumental proportions and blood on the floor. The loser would go to the hospital. My bet is on Shumer to the hospital and Ferraro getting the mic making distasteful comments on the Jews.
It's delicious for us righties to see the left's uncivilized naked foam flecked vicious rage being focused intramurally. It's almost enough to make one believe in...karma!
This has just begun. The blowback from identity politics, and the politically correct enabling of socially destructive habits in the Black community in order to make guilty white liberals feel good about themselves (good luck with that!)is going to blow up in the Dems faces big time. Couldn't happen to a better bunch of schmucks. Welcome, President McCain.
Drudge has a story up on his site about the Stuff White People Like blog, so I'd guess they get their fifteen minutes of fame starting today.
Go Gerry! You may stumble into conservatism yet.
I choose not to stare into the Althouse
Not everyone is cut out for it, I'll tell you. There are times when I think it takes too great a toll, but if you can confront it without losing your faith in humanity, I think the process can reinforce it.
But what of his own sins? Has he nothing to say about his own prejudices and misconceptions?
We are meant to identify with Obama; we all have racist friends, acquaintances, relatives, and pastors. As we lack prejudices and misconceptions, so does Obama.
If it showed great character for Obama to refuse to condemn the racist preacher or any specific remarks of his, because Obama stood by his own, what does it mean that he won't stand by his grandmother?
Did Obama condemn his racist grandmother? Oooohhhhh. I didn't hear that.
Now I know the real reason that the Democrats pushed for bussing years ago. It was a munumental conspiracy to control the bus companies. They now own all the bus companies.
They have to for all the people they keep throwing under them.

While the live in the lilly white suburbs, encourage their children to live in those same type of suburbs, and enjoy rounds of golf with their Republican neighbors.
The bane of Republicans for over a decade, the daily fodder for Rush and his springboard to fame...
the Clintons.
Yet, they'd take Hillary and Bill over a black man any day. It's like Ann's post on the Libertarian cruise line dinner (the one where she was in tears).
Nobody thinks they're "racist", nobody.period. Everyone thinks they have good reasons.
We all look back at history and see a black and white tableau, of course the southerners fighting intergration KNEW they were bad guys, Bull Conner woke up every morning saying, "I'm gonna be evil today!...hon, my eggs are runny again."
So obviously people today think they have good reasons, they don't harbor bias, Obama's a Marxist! (so was MLK...), He has a strange and preacher who doesn't sound like a lesbian Episcopalian Bishop. His wife hates America!
Bull Conner went to bed every night knowing in his heart he was doing good for his family and his community.

Hey, it is always noon someplace in the world!!!!!!
Believe it or not, white people can support Obama simply because they like his politics, his message and his potential. I know, crazy, right?
Also, I find it hilarious that all of the sudden people are accusing Obama of getting to where he is--a viable candidate for the highest office in the land--because he's black. Uh, have you all completely forgotten the history of our country? Y'know, the one where only white, predominantly Protestant men ever got to be president? The one where non-whites have had to struggle against huge odds just to be treated fairly?
Seriously, the cognitive dissonance going on around here is mind boggling.
"Hey, it is always noon someplace in the world!!!!!!"
That's not the problem. It's the Budwieser dude. Ok 9am is too early for Guiness, but a nice Newcastle brown ale with your bagel is great for your digestion and general outlook on life. Remember, beer is not just for breakfast anymore.

Not me man. I'm chillin' with my homies, hanging out between the rib shack and the combination beauty shop/CD store, just keeping it real and smoking a pack of what I am -- Kool.
spelling mistakes, I blame on not having coffee yet! Bull Connor.
Not everyone is cut out for it, I'll tell you. There are times when I think it takes too great a toll, but if you can confront it without losing your faith in humanity, I think the process can reinforce it.
True. Ann is so trite and predictable. So easy to get a rise out. And such a liar too (e.g., more cruel neutrality directed at the Democrats--so far none directed at McCain).
But what drains me some in her stable of fans. Cedarford especially--what a vile Nazi he is. And Ann never criticizes him at all. But then of course there is also Fen, Pogo, Middle Class Guy, Sloan; raving wingnuts each and every one.
But the person who annoys me the most is that pretentious little twat Simon. The man who plays a lawyer on the internet. Good thing he ignores me now.
Doyle said, "Maybe Obama thinks he's great. Maybe he doesn't. I don't care. We've had a humble (or at least stupid-sounding) president and he's governed like a Roman emperor."
This is pretty astute point. I increasingly find Obama's otherwordly remove off putting. His cool demeanor descends to the reptilian under pressure.
But that could well be a good trait for a president: The ability to stand apart from the crowd, to ignore supplication and bluster, to cast-off loyalists without mercy. The reptilian president could well act more humbly than the humane president because, in the end, he (Obama) cares less.
"Not me man. I'm chillin' with my homies, hanging out between the rib shack and the combination beauty shop/CD store, just keeping it real and smoking a pack of what I am -- Kool."
Gawd what an embarrassing admission that you are a total poseur. Someday IF you ever mature you'll feel that embarrassment.
Yet, they'd take Hillary and Bill over a black man any day.
As the Democratic nominee? Yes, I daresay most Republicans would. I don't think that fact means what you think it means.
That's not fair Freder. You left out me, Titus and Bissage. We are the manure that helps this garden grow. I am very hurt. Sniff.
But the person who annoys me the most is that pretentious little twat Simon.
Agreed, although it's not the pretentiousness as much as the dishonesty that bothers me.
I am absolutely reveling in this endless cannibalistic "Blue on Blue," and the two facts that 1) the dopey Dems have no idea how to stop it; 2) in the end, they'll present to the American voters as their nominee either a candidate most Americans don't like, or a candidate most Americans agree does not like America.
Too f*cking funny. The only thing better than this will be the post-election recriminations and back-alley knife-fights. This is great!
Excellent propaganda for Obama. His task was to staunch the flow of blood from his campaign and to divert the media conversation from his relationship with the Rev. Wright.
He succeeded admirably. Obama produced an elegant non-sequitor that has all of his allies and the major media (not necessarily two distinct sets) discussing his briliance. He has moved the conversation from his participation with a hostile bigot to a discussion of black anger generally.
What he has not done, and cannot do, is restore the lustre of a post-racial presidency. And failing this, he cannot win the Presidency.
What I find most interesting about this situation is that Hillary Clinton has kindled a fire that may destroy the Democratic Party. The post segregationist Democratic party has always relied upon the overwhelming support of black americans.
Blacks disaffected by the most successful political takedown in history may not cross the aisle to join the Republican party but they certainly will not turn out for the Democrats in the numbers that the party has come to expect.
I blame on not having coffee yet!
It's more believable to blame the Bud!
Schaeffer -- now there was a beer. That was the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
Gawd what an embarrassing admission
Hah I fooled at least one person.
Actually I do live in a 95% lillywhite suburb.
Tim -
Obama's going to have to do something really terrible to avoid being the next president.
John McCain is ancient, he doesn't know anything about domestic policy, and everyone hates his foreign policy.
"Schaeffer -- now there was a beer. That was the one beer to have when you're having more than one."
That was the best. Along with Riengold the dry beer.
My beer is Rheingold the dry beer.
Think of Rheingold whenever you buy beer.
It's not bitter, not sweet,
It's the extra dry treat
Won't you try extra dry Rheingold beer?
"Also, I find it hilarious that all of the sudden people are accusing Obama of getting to where he is--a viable candidate for the highest office in the land--because he's black. Typical brain dead liberal thinking.
Yes it is still the '50s and the USA is just one big Jim Crow society. Most of us live with and work with people of all ethnic backgrounds, at least in the urban areas. And it is...no...big...deal. That's what happens when people assimilate. In spite of all the attempts by the multi-cultis to try and keep everyone separate. In this PC age when the most damaging charge that can be leveled at someone is racism (Don Imus anyone?)to suggest that BHO has a disadvantage because he is half Black is stupid. And yes, guilty white liberals are salivating at the thought of nominating a minority for the Dem candidate.
Obama has been caught red handed. His 20 year relationship with Wright proves that he is not the trans-racial candidate he claimed to be. Middle class whites are wondering if Obama secretly despises them as Wright does. Other revelations have also dented Obamamania. His deal with Rezko shows he is just another greedy politician. There are still more stories about Obama still to be explored. Stories about how Obama used legal technicalities to dismiss all his opponents during his first state senate campaign in Illinois or how Obama managed to become the enabler for so many bills in the Illinois legislature.
Obama is sinking fast. By June he will be damaged goods and Hillary will win the nomination. Hillary may even win North Carolina.
Something tells me racism doesn't make Paul's top 10 list of most damaging charges.
To equate what I said ... blah blah blah
Oh no, Geraldine, what you said about race, ensuring race-tension remains alive and kicking in the U.S. was soooo much more nuanced.
"Gawd what an embarrassing admission

Trooper, my dad loved Leinqugel beer-i know I spelled it wrong.
I think it was brewed in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin-home of Diane Keaton's character in Annie Hall.
Also, when I was in Drum Corp, and toured this great country, we always stayed in Severville TN. Dolly went to HS there and here band uniform is in a glass case. The high school was a complete dump.
Geraldine Ferraro represented Archie Bunker's home in Queens-true or not?
Lastly there really needs to be a live vlog of a mud wrestling match with Doyle and Palladian. Althouse will be the offical/judge and she can have her readers pay through paypal.
I guarantee that you will receive record amounts of donation if you can help make this happen.
Yes it is still the '50s and the USA is just one big Jim Crow society. Most of us live with and work with people of all ethnic backgrounds, at least in the urban areas.
Yep, I bet some of your best friends are black.
Nonsense. Most of us still live in highly segregated neighborhoods. I don't (my neighborhood is about 1/3 black), but I know I am the exception and acknowledge it. We have come a long way in this country but still have a long way to go.
I had a friend visit me from New Hampshire a couple months ago. He was amazed at how many articulate, educated Black people there were in New Orleans. I went out to the suburbs last week. I couldn't figure out what happened to all the black people. White folks are kind of scary.
Just the other day, DBQ while railing against affirmative action, admitted that clients prefer white male brokers. Apparently they just assume white dudes are better at handling money (I should have asked her if they like Jews even more).

My, my, aren’t you the pompous little squib! You are so full of yourself you cannot even insult people with a little panache and humor. I, for one, am not a raving wingnut or raving anything else. Of course, I suppose anyone who does not agree with your insular, collectivist, and utopian pipe dream point of view must be nuts or a racist, or some such.
As to Simon, I have yet to see him insult anyone here. Maybe you consider his learned opinions or comments insulting because you cannot refute them. Is that what annoys you, bunky? You are not intelligent enough to form a cogent, logical, and polite response?
You sir are a charlatan and a fraud. You are everything in this world I aspire not to be.
Now, since you decided to throw down the gauntlet and spew fightin words, I have to go clean the six shooters.
Perhaps all that praise about Obama's speech was a bit premature. That it was universally greeted as brilliant by reviewers of a liberal-lefty slant doesn't tell us anything useful about whether the speech achieved O's political objective -- that crowd was already well disposed towards Obama. It's the voters that had doubts about him even before the Rev Wright videos surfaced that he needed to convince.
From that perspective, it looks like his decision to go after Geraldine in the speech (to say nothing of grandma) wasn't such a brilliant move after all. Does the Obama team really dispute her point that Obama's success so far in the Dem primary is due in large part to the reality that he is the first black Presidential Dem candidate with any chance to get the nomination and win the election? Geraldine tried to spin that fact to advance Hillary, but (regardless of the spin), it is still true. Dismissing inconvenient facts, or political opponents, with the ever-handy charge of "racist bigot" sounds a lot like the old politics-as-usual approach of lefty race-baiting demagogues that O as the post-racial unifer supposedly wants to get behind us. When the target audience O was trying to reach was white blue collar Dems who probably agreed with Geraldine on the point she was making, a political strategy of equating them with the bigoted views of Rev Wright might not have been such a good idea. Oh, well.
An article on The Politico today features interviews with blue collar Dems in an Irish bar in NE Philly. The speech seems to have been a complete bomb in that venue, too.

Being married to an hispanic woman and being a musician who's played in all Black bands in all Black clubs for 30 years gives me all the cred I need sonny boy. What are your bona fides?
Geraldine Ferraro said: "To equate what I said with what this racist bigot has said from the pulpit is unbelievable."
Both white's hating on blacks and black's hating on whites is bad, bad, bad. But like Ferraro, I would not be inclined to equate them, because you know, the blacks have far more justification for their anger than the whites. They have been atrociously oppressed in the past, and the effects of that oppression carry into the present. Ferraro's remarks may have been milder and sneakier than Wright's, but they were echoes of the voice of the oppressor, whereas Wright's were the indignant voice of the oppressed.
Now, if you're a white guy who has had occasion to be mugged by a gang of black thugs, then I'd give you a pass on a little unrighteous bigotry too. But most of us haven't.
Does all this mean I support affirmative action? Hell no. But it's time we finally made good on our promise of "forty acres and a mule," or its equivalent, not because the ancestors of today's blacks were slaves, but for the simple fact that everyone born into this world has a natural right to an equal share of the earth. It's time we stopped incarcerating a scandalously high percentage of the black population for victimless crimes. And yes, it's an uncomfortable fact that a disproportion number of those doing this incarcerating and robbing -- i.e. those who "make up" the government or fund their political campaigns -- happen to be "rich white people," as Wright has pointed out.

When my weekly updates from the porn sites that I pay for don't have hot hog that I can whack off to.
Every Thursday my 3 porn sites that I subscribe to update and each Thursday I go to the sites with excitement. And then I see the pictures of the "amateurs who are straight" that are going to do it and I am disappointed. This doesn't always happen. Many weeks I look at them and immediately get the lube out. But unfortunately for today, that was not the case. And now I have to wait a full week for new "amateur straight guys" doing it.

Bigots like you are so smug in your assumptions.
There is this black guy at work and every time I see him I tell I think Nas is da bomb.
It is my way of letting the minority know I am down with him and cool.
Similar to the Indian co-worker, whom I always tell I loved the movie Monsoon Wedding.
As well as the asian chick-I tell her Jackie Chan is an amazing actor.
And the lesbian-I tell her I love whale watching.
Just doing my part to make them feel comfortable.
The truth about the Democratic party will be fully revealed when they manage to scrounge up a black lesbian with one or two years experience as senator to run for POUS. When that happens, don't be surprised if it's four or eight years from now, do remember you heard it here first.
Yo! I just now got a paper from City and County of Denver Clerk and Recorder Elections Division. It says my application has been processed and I'm now eligible to vote in the City and County of Denver (I already was but I moved) It says this in English and Spanish, the Spanish part is all leaning to the right. Isn't that funny? The Spanish part is Italicized. It goes, Party Affiliation/ Affiliation de Partido:: Unaffiliated
How did they know? I don't recall telling them I think both their miserable parties suck, and that my vote in this national election, given the Electoral College, is utterly hopelessly useless. So why bother? It would mean standing in line for longer than my legs will hold up while doltishly incompetent computer illiterates age visibly over their computer monitors. I'm convinced this is a giant conspiracy to discourage voter turnout.
As a white male who was raised in New England, let me just say that I was waiting for an apology. My people never owned slaves. My Father came to this country from Ireland in the 1920s and was caught up in the worst anti-immigrant hatred imagineable--he was called a little Irish bastard and a little Irish foof. At least I think Father said they called him a "foof." I cannot be certain because his accent was quite thick. (County Cork)
Where was the apology for me in his speech? Where did he say that he apologized to white people who DID NOT oppress him and denigrate him?
This is a true story--I was on the floor of the 1976 Republican National Convention and I was with the Connecticut delegation. Someone behind me said something very VERY off color about that nice black woman Cicely Tyson. I wheeled around, kicked over a pair of folding chairs and cleaned his clock! I had to leave and miss the festivities, what with the security guards and all getting involved, but it was so worth it.
Where was my apology? I must have missed it.
Yo, Ann! (I use the expression "Yo" because I am now age 59 and also bald, but still able to delude myself that I'm down with the peeps).
Interesting, innit, that the doofuses who perpetually crab about you and/or your blog do so here. Duh. If someone doesn't like your blog the greatest damage they can do is to stop reading it.
But no, those brain surgeons keep logging on and increasing your hits which helps drive revenue. Odd as it seems, the more they dislike you, the more they read you blog and post half-baked snarky comments, the better it is for you. And they haven't figured it out after all this time.
I enjoy the way you bait them from time to time. You really can get to them. That Doyle guy was so irritated he came close to calling you a Mrs. Doody-Head, would be his version of carpet bombing.
Your blog is wonderful. The neighborhood is a bit dicey some days. Great work.

I'm with ... well, I don't know whom.
I don't think Obama "threw his grandma under his bus" (btw, is this the fastest thing to become a cliche across the 'nets, or what?). I don't think he was equating Wright's words and her words.
I think he was trying (clearly not successfully for many) to make the point that people are, in one way or another, to one degree or another, a product of, and in some cases even a prisoner of, their their age (not specifically chronological, but including that) and their experiences and environment, especially formative. And that this applies to both black people and white people--to people, in general.
Obviously, people can disagree with that point of view. But's it not an unreasonable or indefensible one. And it is NOT the same as equating specific speech.
As for Geraldine (whom I think was unfairly pilloried and dumped over her now-famous statement) ... she said, "To equate what I said with what this racist bigot ... " (emphasis added).
Damn it, that is not what he did (anymore than that's what he did with his grandmother). He did not EQUATE it. He placed it along a spectrum (look at the part of the speech relating to Ferraro; that's explicitly what he did). Since when is placing something along a spectrum the same thing as "equating"?
Think about it, folks. If I say, to use an admittedly simplistic analogy, "I place cuss words along a spectrum from 'damn" to 'cunt,'" would you really think that I was "equating" those two words? That I thought they were "equal" in power and offensiviness and/or whatever?
Puh-leeze.
Just a few of the quick reactions to this thread that are running through my mind.

A weird thing, that may or may not be relevant:
For fine orator, Obama isn't very good at dishing up good, pithy soundbites to express his core thoughts. He's much more author than broadcaster, to put it in shorthand, in my opinion.
Having read "Dreams from My Father" (which title I've come to see as a metaphor for the journey that Obama's family--yes, the white part, the part that raised him--undertook, not just with regard to race, but especially that), I am perhaps seeing his speech through a different prism. I dug out the book the other day (in fact, typed out and posted an excerpt in another Althouse thread) and re-read closely the first chapter of it, titled "Origins."
In it, he's really discussing and exploring at length a number of the observations and themes upon which he touched in his speech the other day. But he does it better in the book, because I think that's how he really thinks (using that word in the sense of "process") and better expresses himself. It's not--you'll pardon the expression, but I don't know how else to put it--a black-and-white form(at), or style. And it's definitely a long-form, written one not easily translated into a broadcast style. Which, by the way, the topic isn't, either.
Well, maybe I didn't put that well, but so be it. Maybe someone will get something out of the ponderings, anyway.

This guy makes Rev Wright look tame
her point that Obama's success so far in the Dem primary is due in large part to the reality that he is the first black Presidential Dem candidate with any chance to get the nomination and win the election
I've tried to read this a few times but it keeps making my head spin. All I can figure out is that he is successful in the primaries because he has a chance to win. Or is it that he has a chance to win because he has been successful?
titus, you claim to be from Wisconsin, yet you can't spell Leinenkugel? Poseur.
Drill Sgt: They're not drinking bud. Enjoy the wedding. Maybe they'll serve you some delicious Coors Beer!
It will be interesting, if Hillary! wins the nomination, to see if Geraldine will vanish or not. And I'm not sure how Hillary! can rally traditional Democratic (Read: Black) voters if one of Hillary!'s surrogates is perceived as taking him out. (As if that's her only problem!)
I agree with the first comment in this thread. The perspective of another minister was very interesting to read.
My grandmother- the one I was unfortunate enough to get to know - was truly a horrible witch.
Sorry Madison Man-I don't drink beer.
Middle Class Guy-that video is hilarious.
that preacher said the word tits-I am totally go to that mass this week.
Most of us live with and work with people of all ethnic backgrounds, at least in the urban areas.
Sorry I misjudged you Paul. I just couldn't believe that a white guy who spent any time at all around minorities would make such a clueless statement.
And much like DBQ's statement that racism isn't a problem but most clients prefer white male brokers, your later defense of your street cred belies the validity of your statement. If you have spent 30 years playing in mostly black bands to all black audiences how can you possibly claim that the country is well-integrated?
My grandmother used the N word. Oh dear. Have I thrown her under the bus?
She was also a HUGE Hank Aaron fan. But she lived in Milwaukee.
My Father came to this country from Ireland in the 1920s and was caught up in the worst anti-immigrant hatred imagineable
Where was this? Some place without an Emerald Society, or a Hibernian Society, or an archbishop without an Irish surname? Unless he settled in Bug Tussle, Kentucky, I can't picture a city in America where an Irishman wouldn't find many of his countrymen.
Where was the apology for me in his speech? Where did he say that he apologized to white people who DID NOT oppress him and denigrate him?
Apology for what? He explained why he remained a member of a church with Wright for a pastor. Wright still stings from being oppressed and denigrated. Ask Wright for an apology.
One might equally wonder, however, why you remain a member of a church that protected pedophiles for decades. I imagine the answers would be fairly similar.
Damn it, that is not what he did (anymore than that's what he did with his grandmother). He did not EQUATE it. He placed it along a spectrum (look at the part of the speech relating to Ferraro; that's explicitly what he did).
The he can disown Wright more than he can disown his white grandmother. Yes He Can!
That sermon is absolutely hilarious. Look at the little boys in the background laughing and the women all serious.
I am totally going there this week.
My parents, who grew up in small farm towns in Wisconsin (Lodi) never used the word nigger.
I never heard them say nigger.
I have never heard them call anyone by a racist name which is somewhat surprising considering that they were never exposed to any black people.
My grandmother did use the word "colored" though. Generally, not in a nasty way. It was usually something like that colored kid on tv can really dance.
That sermon calls Obama a Mac Daddy.
"The first time I saw his name was on a pair of 54 d's"
"Obama is a pimp".
That is priceless.
Thanks for sharing Middle Class-I love that stuff.
My grandma had one positive thing going for her: She hated Nixon and was a lifelong dyed-in-the-wool Democratic. Even Hitler loved his German Shepard, Blondie.
Hey, my grandmother was racist too! At least in one or another of the varieties. She called me in 1959 on the phone to warn me that the small college I had chosen admitted blacks, which struck me as strange, but what the hell she's a grandmother, and you never know what to expect from grandmothers.
She absolutely didn't dislike blacks, but that's all I know about it. I guess you could say that there was one thing you couldn't admit about blacks, even though they were her friends. Or differently put, the something unspoken that was unspoken because it didn't make any sense, and it was the invisible last thing left that justified a slavery that could no longer be justified.
A social rule must have been involved, a matter of importance in of polite society. She also, after all, sent a warning note that if she didn't get any thank you note for the christmas gifts then there won't be any more christmas gifts.
My college had admitted blacks for a hundred years, which is probably how a grandmother heard about it. Evidently it was a scandal in nearby Kentucky where she lived.
The mainstream calculus professor was black, just within my own major. This was back before blacks were disadvantaged.
Something unspoken generally divides the races where they're still divided. It has to be unspoken because it doesn't make any sense, but nobody wants to end a social rule that is no longer justified.
Say justified economically, that you can enslave anybody you can enslave, just as an obvious fact.
As to Simon, I have yet to see him insult anyone here. Maybe you consider his learned opinions or comments insulting because you cannot refute them.
He insulted me all the time until I became persona non grata because he claimed all I ever did was troll.
Of course I became persona non grata when I completely debunked his "discovery" that he claimed threw into doubt the entire theory of global warming. Of course, the flaws in his argument were pointed out clearly and succintly by posters on his own blog when he originally came up with his ridiculous piece of illogic. Yet for months he claimed both here and there no one addressed his concerns.
I wondered who the pastor was, and it turns out that James David Manning has written a book, The Oblation Hour. I'm guessing that Pastor Manning's ego resents the competition Obama represents. Here's a blurb written for the Oblation Hour:
Would you like to be so confident about how to live your life that all doubts and fears would cease? Then get ready to embark upon a journey called, The Oblation Hour. This book will teach you how to find every answer, solve every problem, and win every battle. Other than reading the Bible, nothing you have encountered will change your world the way this book will. Once you begin to access the power and information of the Oblation Hour, you will discover that life should never be anything other than Oblation Hour directed. The Oblation Hour way of life is what you have been searching for all of your life. -JAMES DAVID MANNING
I can't watch enough of that preacher.
He is absolutely hilarious.
"Obama's got a white mama. His father was a player and his mother was a player lover"
I hope it will be ok for me to go there this weekend.
I understand. Stick a fork in Obama. He's done. Whether it's true or not he's been charred an angry black man who hates America. Moreover he's an anti-Semitic marxist who loves gays and wants to kill babies. Thank Jesus for RW pundits that bring clarity to this race.

Ah, even in Irish conclave such as New York and Chicago there was anti-immigrant hatred of Irish and then Italians. There were organizations and churches, but that did not stop the prejudice against immigrant Irish and Italians. They were relegated to the most menial of jobs and, I know this will be hard for you to believe, so you better sit down, Blacks were treated better and got better jobs. You really should read about the immigrant experience before you spout things you know nothing about. BTW, I want an apology for Italian immigrants being rounded up and placed into detention camps during WWII. The guvmint only apologized to the Japanese.

That's the effect of condescending to blacks, as if no adult standards could fairly be applied to children and blacks.
The nutballs take over, and nobody says a word ; the normal blacks cowering in the face of it.

Oh please, please don't hate me blackey man because my skin is white;
Though I can't think of a thing I've ever done to you.
If I vote Obama president will that make it all right?
Will that be enough to make your quarrel with me through?
Well, would Senator Obama be carrying 90% of the black vote if he were not biracial or black? I don't think so, but answer it for yourself.
At the same time, would Senator Clinton be a strong candidate if she were not Bill's wife and a woman? Again, I think not.
Would Senator McCain be getting a pass from some conservatives if he were not a veteran with a distinguished war record? Nope.
I think all these things go into the success fo these candidates. Where is the beef?

Because in the urban areas where I work it's ethnically mixed and people people all work and hang out together. I understand that the more ethnically "pure" an enclave is the more people are ill at ease with other types of people (that means ghettos and barrios too). That's in our DNA. We come from thousands and thousands of generations where to trust an outsider was dangerous and perhaps deadly. Nothing breaks that down more than daily interaction with other types of people. And nothing discourages the free and comfortable interaction with other people more than the being told you are justified to resent and hate them.
There has been tremendous progress in the last 40 years and almost all the white people I know are genuinely trying hard to erase prejudice. Not so much with the Black people I know. They are told over and over that they are justified to harbor ill will towards whites and America. And it's the Dems and liberals who enable that thinking. The people who are most hurt by it are the Blacks of course because the only way to move ahead in society is to take personal responsibility and learn skills, acquire knowledge, provide SOMETHING USEFUL TO SOCIETY. Only then does one have self respect and feel comfortable with and part of society. The sense of grievance instilled in the Black community by guilty white liberals, the Jerimiah Whites, and the race based Marxists in academia only sink the Black community into an impossible morass of entitlement without accomplishment, and it's attendent hopelessness and rage. This is all a ploy of the Marxist redistributionist left wing in it's thirst for power. It's poisonous for the nation and ruinous for the Black community.
One of the main reasons I left and now despise the Democrat party is because of what I saw up close what a deleterious effect it has on the Black community.
The liberal white commenters on this board and elsewhere all scream how Blacks are justified in their grievances but that's all about being self congratulatory for being "down with the struggle". Nothing will keep Blacks from integrating and moving ahead in society more than stirring up resentment and resistance to integration into mainstream American society and adopting the conservative values of personal responsibility, hard work, and love of country, and GRATITUDE for living in the system of greatest opportunity in the history of the planet.
I see what political correctness and the multi culti anti-white, anti-Western civilization-left is doing to tear this nation apart and it sickens and angers me. I know from studying political philosophy that it's roots are in the Marxist intellectual political movement who's overarching political goal has always been to destroy Western democratic capitalism, and it's flagship, The United States Of America. There was a time when people could believe that a better society and a "New Man" would arise from the ashes, but the twentieth century put paid to that notion. Or it should have. But by now the Marxist virus has spread Frankenstein-like into mainstream American society and is poised to fulfill it's mission to it's long dead masters.
No more further proof is needed than to listen to Jeremiah White, Michael Moore, most of Hollywood, and a sizable portion of Democrat politicians and the throngs of American leftists, Black and White, who agree with them.
"Yah, you have to lay into the morons or it will keep coming up. They'll represent the race until you do, and everybody will be really kind about it."
Yep, without personal and corporate responsibility, people go to shit. True.

Yes, but I don't know if that last part is really true. Here's the rub--Father was a bit dusky in his complexion, owing to a liason between his own Father, Wilson Rogers, and a Spanish girl of about seventeen who he encountered while practicing law in Cork. At age eleven, in a fit of rage, he cursed out my Grandfather and got on a ship to Argentina. The ship went, instead, to America and they processed him into this country. From there, he got work in a foundry and sort of wandered into working for the Pinkertons as a strike breaker.
Despite all of the anti-Irish laws and customs of the time, my Father did quite well for himself. He immediately renounced Catholicism and became an Episcopalian. He saved every penny he made and was independently wealthy--having a fortune of about $300,000 or so--by the time he was twenty.
But did he do so at the expense of any black people? Of course not. Did I come after him and cause black people a great deal of discomfort? Of course not. So where is my apology? I mean, if you're going to lump me in with a bunch inbred crackers from Fugly-ville, Georgia, at least give me the courtesy of explaining why I'm such an evil person.
I was willing to vote for Obama if it would put an end to the victimhood, race card playing and whining coming from the professional race victims once and for all.
OK, if I vote for the guy, will you folks shut up already, like forever?
I can see now that electing Obama will not end the carping, but will only prolong and encourage it.
I still say though that if diesel fuel is not below $2.50 per gallon on election day I'm going to hold my nose and pull the DHIMMIcRAT lever.
I don't care about up-ballot or down-ballot elections, I'm just going for the revenge.
As someone who is not American, it is amazing to me that alot of Americans see racism as a thing of the past. Paul above referred to "the 50s."
But it goes much later than that. Major civil rights legislation was not passed until 1964. As late as 1988, you had a major presidential candidate use the image of a black man to stoke racial fears in television advertising.
And yet, given just a few decades of being legally, if not practically, decalred as equals, blacks are supposed to shrug off hundreds of years of oppression. It is not that blacks born today are resentful of slavery itself; but they are, rightly, resentful of lasting effects of slavery. That 80% of ghettos in America are inhabited by blacks people is not a concidence. It is the result of inequalities that are ingrained in the American psyche.
An Obama presidency will mean 4 years of nonstop babble about racism, race in American, diversity, and multi-culturalism.
The liberals must be having wet dreams over it. All "Race" all the time.
I know from studying political philosophy that it's roots are in the Marxist intellectual political movement who's overarching political goal has always been to destroy Western democratic capitalism, and it's flagship, The United States Of America.
I guess I must have missed that session. Or maybe you are accurately describing a vanishigly small minority of people in this country (i.e., the true Communists and radical anarchists).
Hey Shan, evil whitey has transfered TRILLIONS of dollars to blacks. Shut your euro-trash pie hole.
That 80% of ghettos in America are inhabited by blacks people is not a concidence. It is the result of inequalities that are ingrained in the American psyche.
Oh, balderdash. "Ghettoes" in America? There aren't any to speak of, unless you count a few hundred blocks in Detroit, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
The standard of living for the poorest of Americans is practically a stroll down fatcat lane compared to people in India, who have to steal dirty water out of puddles and drink it by squeezing rags.
Really, you liberals need to get a clue. This isn't some poor country full poverty. This isn't season three of "The Wire" and Bubbles 'ain't' scrounging t-shirts outta the dumpster or looking for a pack of Ho-Hos to fall off of a bread truck.
A rough equation of what Obama did in a soaring speech of immense "articulateness" was this:
Obama dedicates his 1st book to his best friend "The Philosopher" - who Barack has known the last 20 years. His wife is also a keen admirer of their friend who they say fills them with all sorts of insights into life. Then video comes out of the Obama's sitting around "the Philosopher's" home as the guy measures out smack into bags, discussing the Federal budget and the moral basis of state apportionments..
The question everyone has is while Barack doesn't deal in the poison his "dear inspiration does" what kind of judgment does he show stitting around for 20 years as heroin is bagged up.
To which Barack nobly rises above it all, with beautifully crafted words delivered in a black preachers style that makes liberal whites tingle between their legs, addressing the national drug problem. He soars! He scores! With each silver phrase about the need for our people and nation to transcend the vice he is too pure to ever indulge in himself...
He says he will never abandon his drug dealer friend. There has been too much good achieved in mutual discussions. "The Philosopher" helps his community with fair prices and active charity like his soup kitchen help and aid for homeless youth...
But that there is moral equivalency...because his mother abused prescription drugs and Barack lists two prescriptions he saw in her medicine cabinet 40 years ago. And feels he would be remiss if he was not able, as The Obama, to also morally instruct the deficiencies of drug abusers Teddy Kennedy and Theresa Heinz Kerry and the loathsome Bill Clinton setting a poor role model with cigars, which are "bad things" no matter where they are put..
Afterwords, despite his never addressing his bad judgment about hanging with a heroin-pushing friend, his snitching his mother out, his dragging Democrat icon's minor failings into his Orations to make himself look greater..
The press and pundits latch onto the style and glow of his speech as What Is Important. Not that his speech lacked one admission of error on his part. Not that he trashed his own mother and well-liked Party Figures to make himself look better. No, just how inspiring he was when talking about other's drug misjudgments!
********
That is what smells. So many media have bought into the Black Messiah thing that they laud him for a speech on how he did nothing wrong, will stick with a bigot while dissing the woman that raised him, compare his friend's significant transgressions of raw bigotry to Ferraro's arguably completely true observations on the rise of politicians on identity politics. It's like they agree that if he talks at the airy, overarching macro level of any problem he is personally caught up in, he gets a pass.
The media is giving him the MLK treatment. The one perfect American human being who ever lived, whose "legacy" requires the media to never report on MLKs sins or bad judgment - or they will show themselves to be evil racists..
Obama in the Highest, and on Earth, Peace and Harmony and Goodwill to all men and women who are good enough, pure enough - to follow Him..
If only it could be that way, Eliot Spitzer no doubt wishes, if he could only have given a magnificent speech on Trust and Family and Faithfulness - toss his Dad under the bus for making him too driven and grasping - and had no reason to apologize or resign for his "little errors" in judgment.

The old thing on getting between Schumer and a camera was also the case for fellow NYC types like Sharpton, Rudy, and Spitzer. And Jesse and John McCain.
Spitzer is gone, (not alas, a'tall). Rudy, Rev Al and Jesse are at the early part of the good riddance phase that Spitzer has fully completed. Leaving McCain. He is older and smaller than Schumer, but meaner. And tested by tortures worse than Schumer. My money would be on McCain in a battle with Chuck for airtime. But McCain is disadvantaged. If he claws his way past Schumer, the cameras will instantly vanish if the Black Redeemer is nearby and his pontifications may be captured on video. Even to announce his kids have just changed schools - because he will say it so well.
"A Typical White Person"
You won't believe this:

Powerline is right: "...can you imagine any Presidential candidate, in any context, describing anyone as a "typical black person?" Or a "typical Asian person?" Worse, what Obama said was that the "typical white person" views others of different races with fear and suspicion. Obama appears to be digging himself in deeper and deeper."

Today Obama stated in his speech that his grandmother, (whom he claimed called black people by the "n" word) was a "typical white person."
Obama is falling fast. He just lost North Carolina with that one.

You missed it alright, because you have absorbed it drop by drop through osmosis. To equate the Marxist dialectic only with classic communism is stupid and shows a very limited knowledge formed in only the coarsest concepts.
It's at least as much Rousseau as Marx but the term Marxism, or more specifically Gramscian Marxism is the common description.

I wonder if Barry O said that after a hot Sunday session with Rev Wright where the Rutgers "dissed black princesses" were in the sermon got him all fired up..

That is one of the most ignorant and historically incorrect statements. The reason for the Black ghettos was not just inequality. It was a result of the illustrious War on Poverty; the Great Society of LBJ, a monumental racist. Segregation was legislated out of existence, but to keep Blacks in their own areas- you know so they would not move into White enclaves- welfare was expanded to keep them in an everlasting state of poverty. Prior to the great welfare state there was actually a burgeoning Black middle class. The Great Society destroyed them. They moved out and left the "poor" behind. Then the great White Democratic fathers created a plantation system called housing projects to keep them Blacks right where they belong; in their own neighborhoods. They sure did not put any projects in the lily white suburbs where the jobs and manufacturers were moving.
You also leave out the great Black middle class neighborhoods that were created in large urban areas. Created by the Blacks who left the inner city because welfare drove them out of business or made it unsafe for them to live. They are anything but blighted ghettos.
Maybe if you actually worked in a ghetto, talked to the people who live there and the people who left there, you would know where of you speak. Maybe if you read about the history of welfare and entitlements you would understand the deleterious effect it had on Black America. It was slavery all over again. Created by those good hearted Democrats.
Obama goan be pretty miffed at whitey
When he see that whitey ain't swallin' the guilt pill;
Then you goan see the threats come out

Yes. His big speech on race was pretty and all, but he missed the opportunity for his Sister Souljah moment with Wright. A lot of people aren't following the election yet at this point. Getting Wright out of the way now would have minimized the damage the association could do him later, but now it is just going to fester.
Anti-white racism is just part of the issue. There are just too many people around Obama who have expressed open contempt for America -- his wife, his preacher, his mother. Voters are going to assume that where there's smoke, there's fire.
You really should read about the immigrant experience before you spout things you know nothing about.
In the 20s, Irish-Americans of my acquaintance were cops, firemen, priests, union carpenters, and union electricians. Few if any blacks could say the same; I don't know what jobs blacks held at that time that you would think were any better. At that time, blacks were also the last hired and the first fired.
And don't compare the situation of Irish immigrants to Italians -- Italians were much more discriminated against. Look at some of the immigrant quotas established by the 1924 Immigration Act. These quotas were based on the percentage of each nationality in the population as of the 1890 census. The lesson: beaucoup Irish, almost as much as British-origin residents:
Country Quota
Germany 51,227
Great Britain and Northern Ireland 34,007
Irish Free State (Ireland) 28,567
Sweden 9,561 Norway 6,453
Poland 5,982
Italy 3,845
Czechoslovakia 3,073
Belgium 512 Spain 131
Armenia 124
Africa (other than Egypt)

Today Obama stated in his speech that his grandmother, (whom he claimed called black people by the "n" word) was a "typical white person."
That's a lie by the way. Obama never claimed his grandmother called black people by the "n" word.
Segregation was legislated out of existence, but to keep Blacks in their own areas- you know so they would not move into White enclaves- welfare was expanded to keep them in an everlasting state of poverty.
My God, you must have learned history where Paul learned his political philosophy.
The only problem with your complaints about how the Great Society programs plunged people further into poverty is that they didn't--for the most part they suceeded. The poverty rate dropped rapidly during the heyday of the great society programs.
And while it is true that many of the public housing projects were built to concentrate the poor, to claim that it was liberals who deliberately trapped minorities in decaying inner cities is literally turning history on its head and inside out. White flight to the suburbs was engineered through tactics such as redlining, steering and blockbusting and enabled by the construction of interstates and highways. Much of it was carried out by private interests and fed on the fears of white residents.
After watching some of the black preachers there is an element of what they say that is very conservative. That Manning (in one of his videos) was complimentary of Huckabee regarding constitutional amendment for abortion.
Also, they rail against the gays big time.
All and all the videos are great fun.
Heather Vandergeld: Look who just flew in from the slums of Beverly Hills.
Megan Vandergeld: It's the Beverly Ho-Billies.
Marcus Copeland: [as Tiffany Wilson] Squeeze me?
Kevin Copeland: [as Brittany Wilson] Oh no, you didn't?
Marcus Copeland: [as Tiffany Wilson] I'm sorry, but uhm... we just saw your new video. Yea, they had a screening over at Saks Fifth Avenue in the security office
[laughs]
Marcus Copeland: A klept-ho-maniac!
[laughs]
Megan Vandergeld: [arrogantly] Your mother shops at Saks.
Marcus Copeland: [indignantly]
[as Tiffany Wilson]
Marcus Copeland: What?
[the Vandergeld sisters proudly do siss-fingers]
Kevin Copeland: [as Brittany Wilson] Oh my God. You want to talk about mothers? You wanna talk about mothers! It's mother time, okay! Your mother's so dumb she went to Dr Dre for a Pap smear! "Something's wrong, Dr Dre! My coochie's doing a beatbox!"
Heather Vandergeld: Well yea? Your mother's so stupid she exercises when she could just get like, liposuction or something!
Marcus Copeland: [as Tiffany Wilson] Your mother's so old that her breast milk is powdered. You breast-feed like this:
[blows powder from hand, and everyone starts to laugh]
Heather Vandergeld: Your mother is so, like... She's so...
[to Megan]
Heather Vandergeld: Megan you go!
Megan Vandergeld: Your mother is so stupid that she goes to Barney's Rooftop Deck Restaurant for lunch and orders a niçoise salad and calls it a 'ni-coise' salad. 'Ni-coise' salad, right?
Marcus Copeland: [as Tiffany Wilson] Your mother's ass is so hairy, it looks like Don King's about to pop out and say, "Only in America!"

... a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.
Show me where the n-word is there. Show me.
Hell, I don't even see the word "epithet" in there. But maybe you can show me that, too.
Look, harshly criticize away! But can we least quote accurately the words that the guy used in his speech with reference to his grandmother? Or at least avoid just tossing off "whom he claimed called black people by the "n" word" as if that's a precise description of what he said in the speech?
Althouse, everyday put up a post about Jeremiah Wright and your numbers will skyrocket.
These blog posts are good as gold.
What Ms Ferraro said was factually correct.
Anyone with the same skinny resume and short tenure in public office as Obama has, would never be considered as a viable candidate for the highest office in our country. The same goes for Clinton.
The only reason that either of these clowns is being considered by the Dems is Barack is Black and HIllary is Female. Ms Ferraro also had the grace to say the same thing about herself and her position on the ballot. She wouldn't have been chosen to run as VP if she wasn't a female.
There is nothing racists about it or anti feminist about it. The facts are that the Dems are running two spectacularly under qualified candidates merely based on race and gender.
Face up to it. If they were running more qualified candidates none of this identity politics would be as big of a deal as it is now. We have nothing else to focus on but race and gender because the two candidates aren't fit to run for a City Council seat much less President of the USA.
Will it be ok for me to wear Prada at Mannings sermon on Sunday?
Rather than our fabulous Sunday brunch the sisters and I are going to go get some of that old time religion in Harlem.
I can't wait.

I love that Manning guy. He is so outrageous. I have been missing out by not attending some of these black masses.
Preacher Manning sad "tits" and "54 double d" and "Obama's a pimp".
DBQ: I agree with you that Obama and Clinton don't have particularly deep, or impressive, resumes for running for president. I don't like that either. But City Council? Jeez. The local political class where you live must be a whole lot more rarefied than where I live, or have ever lived, that's all I can say.
Hey Eli Manning can say whatever he wants as long as we win the Superbowl!
GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!!!!

Black chicks, too.
Poontang, poontang,

The only problem with your complaints about how the Great Society programs plunged people further into poverty is that they didn't--for the most part they suceeded. The poverty rate dropped rapidly during the heyday of the great society programs.
Bah! It did not! And whose numbers are you using? The numbers that Bill Moyers told the various departments of the Johnson Administration to make up out of thin air?
And while it is true that many of the public housing projects were built to concentrate the poor, to claim that it was liberals who deliberately trapped minorities in decaying inner cities is literally turning history on its head and inside out. White flight to the suburbs was engineered through tactics such as redlining, steering and blockbusting and enabled by the construction of interstates and highways. Much of it was carried out by private interests and fed on the fears of white residents.
Here's where your uncle Norman gets to explain something to you that you probably didn't already know--people congregate in areas where they find the things they like. I like wine--that's what attracts me to people like Ann. She is a great lover of good wine. Well, near my home is a place called Corridor Wine. It's a supermarket-sized wine store. You can get anything you want there. And I'm talking the good stuff.
If you're of a different persuasion, and you like do-rags, chick peas, and blunt wrap--you congregate near stores that sell those things. It's not rocket science. It's human science.
We call that human science "social studies" and if you had been paying attention instead of agitating against the Dean and toking yourself over the line again and again, you'd know this.
Poor liberals. Everything is The Man's fault.
Well, I'm "the Man" and I want an apology. This "Man" didn't do anything to oppress Hussein Obama. Did I try to keep him out of Harvard? Of course not. I went to Princeton. And he would have been welcome there, I can assure you.
What say you, liberals? Am I suggesting that the poor should congregate in areas where they can make a decent living and take responsibility for themselves? We have a saying for that. And that saying is, you betcha.
White chicks rock!
Black chicks, too.
get a mulatto one
Get the taste of two.
I can unequivocally say I would vote for Hillary or Obama over pretty much all of the clowns on my City Council, in a heartbeat.
There's an idea!--I'll write them in on a couple of those blanks on my ballot next fall.
Now, who to write in for POTUS ...
Trooper/Doyle?
Titus/DBQ?
This could be entertaining.

Who's Complete Sentences?
(Sounds like what someone would name a kid in New England a few centuries back ... you know, Patience, Temperance, Complete Sentences ... )
Geraldine Ferraro is in deep denial.
I'm not sure she has much of a reputation left, except as a gimmicky footnote to history. Clearly there was little to recommend her, beyond her gender, for the Vice Presidential nomination in 1984 (and can one imagine her as qualified for the Presidency/Commander-in-Chiefdom)?
She would do well to shut up post-haste. (When you are in a hole, at least stop digging.)
More generally, I fear that many of the comments on the Rev. Wright show little or no appreciation for the realities of black life in America, or the historic functioning and role of black churches. While I would not choose to defend all of Wright's statements, and they are certainly problematic in the context of a political campaign (where, as Michael Kinsley reminds us, a gaffe is an unintentional or surprising telling of the truth), the nature and extent of the right wing reaction (especially given Obama's own sharply different political style, temperament, and clear repudiation of many of Wright's remarks) betrays a willful ignorance of the realities or prejudice and discrimination in American history, including that of our own time.
Obama stated that racism is America's original sin. Those tempted to deny that refuse to confront the hard realities of our history.
More seriously:

Oh,I thought this was the analogy game where you pair two things that have nothing to do with each other. You know:
Elliott Spitzer/Ozzie Nelson
Sarah Jessica Parker/attractive woman
That, too.
It's a nuanced game, Trooper.
Do try to keep up.
Anyway, I do too write in complete sentences.
Except when I don't.
Freder Frederson said...
Segregation was legislated out of existence, but to keep Blacks in their own areas- you know so they would not move into White enclaves- welfare was expanded to keep them in an everlasting state of poverty.
My God, you must have learned history where Paul learned his political philosophy.
How much time did you spend in the ghettos in the seventies? How much time did you spend in housing projects? How many generations of people on welfare do you know? How many middle class blacks who moved out do you know? How many days, weeks, and months did you toil in the ghettos and housing projects?
I will bet your only experience with the ghetto and the projects is driving as fast as you can through them to get to your next consciousness raising class.
I learned my "political" history from the people that lived through it everyday. I was also fortunate enough to study the history of welfare in college- from Martin Luther til the early seventies.
When you get a real education, come back and talk to me. Education is not only in books. Nor does it come out of the pie holes of professors whose only experience with ghettos and projects was out of books, trumped up government reports, and think tanks.
I got my BA from college and my advanced degrees from the University of Real Life. Now, recess is over. Go back to your Kindergarten class.
My, my how very snippy of you my dear.
Anyone with the same skinny resume and short tenure in public office as Obama has, would never be considered as a viable candidate for the highest office in our country.
Then how does that explain George Bush? He isn't black or a woman and when he ran for president the first time he was a one and a half term governor of a weak governor state. Before that he had just presided over one failed business after another.
I don't do nuance. I believe in blunt force trauma to solve most of life's difficulties.
NOT snippy. Crisp! Crisp.
Anyone with the same skinny resume and short tenure in public office as Obama has, would never be considered as a viable candidate for the highest office in our country. The same goes for Clinton.
Does anyone really vote for a resume for President, or do they vote for the person that they think can achieve stated/unstated goals?
If resumes won elections, why did Al Gore not win in 2000? (Okay, bad example, he did). Um, why didn't Bush win in '92? His resume certainly beat out Clinton's!
I got my BA from college and my advanced degrees from the University of Real Life. Now, recess is over. Go back to your Kindergarten class.
Gee, I just love how my facts are met with anecdotes and ad hominum attacks. But that is pretty typical.
Hey, Trooper: Isn't it fun to be, essentially, IM'ing in the midst of heavy incoming?
Wheeeeeee!!!!!!
In the 20s, Irish-Americans of my acquaintance were cops, firemen, priests, union carpenters, and union electricians.

TWB said: "Obama stated that racism is America's original sin. Those tempted to deny that refuse to confront the hard realities of our history."
I happen to think what happened to the indians (excuse me, native americans) qualifies as a more original sin.
As pointed out by others, slavery was practiced by a minority of Americans. I certainly feel no guilt over it. Some of my family even fought to help eliminate it in the 1860s and paid with lives, so bugger off!
"Althouse, everyday put up a post about Jeremiah Wright and your numbers will skyrocket."
Haha. I'm sure she (and all the others jumping on the feigned outrage/Obama is racist! bandwagon) never thought of that one!
I don't do nuance.
Wait. I thought you were a fine single-malt scotch drinker.
BTW Fredersson,
During the sixties when all the racist Great Society and War on Poverty programs were passed, LBJ was President and the Dems ruled the legislature. LBJ after signing the bills for the Great Society Program is quoted as saying:
:"Now I'll have them niggers voting Democrat in perpetuity."
Some Liberal huh?
Shan wrote: "That 80% of ghettos in America are inhabited by blacks people is not a concidence."
Shan, race is not a good predictor of poverty. Here are the best predictors of poverty.
Mom is under 25 (best if mom is under 18)
No dad in the home
Multiple children with multiple fathers
dropping out of high school before you graduate
being addicted to drugs/alcohol
Those choices have the highest correlation with poverty. Can someone say "personal responsibility?"
I knew some of you could! And I knew which ones too.
Trey
Bah! It did not!
Just claiming something didn't happen, doesn't make it suddenly not happen. Pity when reality intrudes on the way you wish things were.
"Wait. I thought you were a fine single-malt scotch drinker."
Only on occasion. I prefer to stick with simple wines and beer, the occasional grappa or sambucca and cognac as staples. Single malt is a two or three time a year thing. Nuance is over rated.
I happen to think what happened to the indians (excuse me, native americans) qualifies as a more original sin.
And that has nothing to do with racism?

You know, if "Pooper Pork" and his little butt buddy ricjam would just SHUT THE HELL up and stop using a public forum for the exchange of ideas and information as their own personal means of exchanging banal, pointless and seriously unfunny little snippets of nothing interesting, we might have a discussion here that borders on sanity.
I submit again--much of what the Johnson admin had to say about poverty was cooked up by the likes of Moyers and Pat Moynihan.
And your rebuttal is what? I will wade through the childish tripe and the booger eaters to read your answer.
That Pastor Manning had a video on youtube where he praises Bush to high heavens and goes off on every black politician.
He also has a youtube video up where he wants a constitutional amendmant for abortion and gay marriage.
And boy does he go off on the black man-woo.
"And that has nothing to do with racism?"
If does, then maybe Obama should stoke it - that'll win more votes.
"Chill. Out. Here."

Dust Bunny Queen said, Anyone with the same skinny resume and short tenure in public office as Obama has, would never be considered as a viable candidate for the highest office in our country. The same goes for Clinton.
And the same goes for JFK. And Abraham Lincoln. And Mr. Obscure Governor from Arkansas, Bill Clinton.
Of course there are exceptions. The first George Bush was Mr. Resume himself. President Taft was highly experienced. Then there's President Dole. Oh wait a minute.
DBQ, I'm mocking you a bit, but only to say, please, stay in the box of historical fact with your pronouncements.
Lots of people have successfully run for president without great political accomplishment behind them.
Geraldine Ferraro is in deep denial.
I'm not sure she has much of a reputation left, except as a gimmicky footnote to history.
John Kerry must be in some deep denial because he said the same exact damn thing today. It's nice Obama said we shouldn't make too much of gaffes like Ferraro [except when they actually do happen and can be exploited for political gain, and then it's termed slice and dice politics]. And these rules also don't apply to Hillary, her staff, surrogates, or supporters. Two weeks ago the story was how much Obama transcends race, and all these nice white people coming out voting for him. Now his crazy pastor gets him in hot water, and he explains this now as a race issue. And we have a choice! Elect him, or we're racists! What a guy.
I submit again--much of what the Johnson admin had to say about poverty was cooked up by the likes of Moyers and Pat Moynihan.
If you can produce a shred of credible evidence that the Census Bureau doctored numbers on the orders of the Johnson administration, produce it. Otherwise, there is really no point in arguing with someone who simply states "Bah, I don't like the official statistics, so they must have been doctored."
ROOOOAAAAAAAR right back at you, American Lion.
By the way, Thomas Sowell, among others, have already argued your side of this argument (with which I largely agree, by the way) far better than you are doing, and without the arrogant sanctimony and other extraneous crap. I suggest people go do some research while you go take a tranquilizer, or go fly-fishing, or take a nap, or whatever it is you do to relax.
Also:
1) The handle is reader_iam
2) Thanks for teaching me something new: I've never heard of a male and female being referred to as butt buddies. I always thought that was a slur related to male homosexuality.
3) The day Althouse asks me to leave, I will. Until then, blow it out your ear, self-described "King of the Beasts."
XXOO,
reader_iam (female, and while not 64, not old enough to be your daughter, and not young enough to put up with your shit)
Trooper: See? I can do non-nuanced, too!
Not **young** enough to be your daughter, of course. Passion leads us all to write intemperately.
And NOW I'll stop cluttering up your conversation.
Carry on.

Hey!!!! Lay off the Trooper and reader-iam.
The day Althouse asks me to leave, I will.
Really? Most of the fun of blogging here is seeing how much you can piss off Ann without having her delete all your posts. Its a delicate balancing act.
But I think the key is never call her a drunk or a conservative--she is extremely sensitive about being called either one of those.

Satistics do not lie, but liars use statistics. Your proof is way too broad to prove anything. Like I said earlier, if you did not personally witness the effect of welfare on the Black population in urban areas- which is what we were discussing- then you do not know WTF you are talking about. Welfare destroyed people, it did not help them. It was never meant to.
The whole purpose of welfare was to keep people enslaved to a government check and benefits at the starvation level. If those saintly Liberals were so intent on helping Blacks in the inner cities, they would have created incentives for businesses to stay there or move there so people could be employed.
Instead, they created slavery.
Also, when I was in Drum Corp, and toured this great country, we always stayed in Severville TN.
Titus--you were in drum corps? Which one? (Being a saxophonist, I wasn't allowed in that world, but plenty of my college friends--and now some former students as well--have been involved.)
Then how does that explain George Bush? He isn't black or a woman and when he ran for president the first time he was a one and a half term governor of a weak governor state. Before that he had just presided over one failed business after another.
The Texas Rangers Baseball Club is not a failed business; they just don't win as often as they should. *sigh*
I'm sorry--did I upset a pair of no-talent hacks who can't produce a single relevant post between the two of them?
You know, if I was unable to form words or coherent thoughts because the screaming voices in my head were telling me to KIL KILL KIL!!! I'd probably be a cut-and-paste nutjob like Pooper Pork.
Now, as to the TOPIC, something I notice doesn't get discussed--what more evidence do you need? Moyers, a known drunk, and Moynihan, no teetotaler himself, largely falsified the work they did for the Johnson admin when it came to poverty.
DO NOT call into question the accuracy of the census bureau, for they are good folk who do good work. RATHER, call into question the assemblage and interpretation of large facets of what they tried to publish circa 1967 and 1968 to try to SALVAGE the sinking fortunes of a very unpopular Johnson. Remember the war, people? And the turmoil at home?
I submit to you that any gains from the Great Society were largely based on lies told to help Johnson in the 1968 election--something Gene McCarthy largely took care of because McCarthy KNEW IN HIS HEART that Johnson and his boys were lying about what they were accomplishing vis a vis poverty.
Now, can we have a discussion? Or are the ramblings of tweedle dee and tweedle dum in a self-congratulatory stew of mediocrity and half-considered guffawing the norm around here?
Your uncle Norman brings his "A" game to the issues, and I don't suffer fools. Ms Althouse is a fine thinker and a great considerer of this culture and the law--I think she would like to move past mouth breathers and see people with some acumen post here from now on.
Your milage could vary on that, but that is my guess. Have the booger eaters now had their say?
Look Lucky's back.
Another good way to "make it" in politics is to be famous or else have the same name as a famous person.
It helps to stick in people's minds so they remember who you are.
Jesse Ventura anyone? Or maybe the Governator of California comes to mind?
Ask someone, "can you name one governor of Minnesota" and they probably can. And they will overwhelmingly name Jesse Ventura even though Minnesota has had lots of governors. I grew up there and *I* would name Jesse Ventura.
Think of when the campaigns started and there were 8 or 10 guys lined up in a row and you sort of squinted at them and said, "Who?" And maybe you'd remember Kucinich because he's so goofy looking and you definitely remembered Hillary and Obama and, well, you'd heard of Dodd or Durbin and... which one is he anyway.
Okay that's Giuliani and, whoo hoo, Fred Thompson finally joined, and we all know McCain... People seem to like Romney, which one is Romney, oh, okay that one second to the end is Romney... oh, there's another Thompson? Who is he?
ANYONE who doesn't think that Hillary and Obama had/have a distinct *advantage* in the recognition department aren't being honest with themselves.
And since there really is NO ONE outside a few para-military compounds in Idaho and a bare spattering of bigots here or there who isn't willing to vote for a black man or a woman this recognition factor does make a huge difference.
How many state governors can you name? I know Richardson because I'm in NM, there's Arnold in CA, there's Jindal in LA, there's Pallin in AK. Oh, and maybe Bush still in FL?
Why do I recognize Pallin and Jindal? Two quite young, very new governors? Wow, duh, because Pallin is female and Jindal is some sort of brown... parents from India maybe?
Geraldine Ferraro might not be right about much but she is absolutely right when she said that if Obama was white he would not have the success that he has right now.
Freder--
