Said some unnamed Democratic leader to the NYT about Eliot Spitzer, who is scheduled to announce his resignation 17 minutes from now.
UPDATE: Spitzer resigns. I can't think of a time in American politics when someone fell this far this fast.

Everyone is missing the point here. All prostitution rings are controlled by Organized Crime. See post here with links to books etc.
From what I have read, he did not make too many friends even amongst his fellow Democrats, so the abandonment would be more on the order of them throwing him overboard or making him walk the plank.
Associated Press live feed GoogleEarth cam is tracking the governor's motorcade as it makes it's way through city streets to his press conference. Reminiscent of the OJ white Bronco coverage.
I'm guessing he'll be in and out in under 5 minutes.
There he is: 11:43
There he goes: 11:46
three minutes
The Lieutenant Governor will now be New York's first black, legally blind governor.
Has there been a white legally blind governor?
he did not make too many friends even amongst his fellow Democrats
The same was true of the recalled California governor Gray Davis.
To make a friend, be one, Gov. Spitzer!
..and I wonder: Who are clients # 1 - 8?
"Has there been a white legally blind governor?"
Elliot Spitzer was a governor...
white, presumably; blind, allegedly.
This is great news for Rudy Giuliani.

Other than being taken out by a bullet.
How 'bout Spiro Agnew? Was he taken out by something sudden, or something that percolated for a while before reaching a tipping point? I forget.
There has never been an "Officially" blind governor, but Hugh Carey didn't ever see what was going on, especially in the real estate industry.
I'm guessing he'll be in and out in under 5 minutes.
Kind of a waste of $1000 an hour.
Oh wait, you're talking about the press conference.
Black and legally blind sounds like blues cred.

When you get to the top of the mountain you have to watch your footing. Gravity is one of the laws you cannot flout.
As I was reading Meade's comments, I was thinking along the lines of Dix's comment.
Maybe one of his problems over the years was premature ejaculation. If so, he chose expensive therapy.

Or gave so many the priceless gift of laughter by doing so.

The Duke of Westminster is said to have been Client 6.

Are you talking about the press conference or how long it took him to bang whores?
Kudos to the folks upthread that talked about the importance of having friends on your way up. That, I think, is a really good insight and I never thought about it! Nixon had no friends; Grey Davis had no friends; Eliot Spitzer had no friends. You can be a bully on the way up and it may get you to the top--but when it hits the fan, without someone to say "stop--think about this" or otherwise help you, you are going down fast. Good riddance to a real scum bag.

Of course, the record has been famously broken in British Politics.
So when is the ethics complaint to the New York State Bar going to be filed?
Egregious violations of the law, as well as selective non-prosecution of known crimes, seems to me to be demonstrated moral turpitude and unfitness to practice law, justifying disbarment.
