"I knew him and know him as somebody in my church who talked to me about Jesus and family and friendships."

Barack Obama uses the roiling Jeremiah Wright controversy to present himself to us as utterly ordinary (and completely Christian).

And — as if it's your problem if you're hung up on Wright — he demands that we transcend race altogether:
"We have to come together," he told a town-hall meeting at a high school....

"I noticed over the last several weeks that the forces of division have started to raise their ugly heads again. And I'm not here to cast blame or point fingers because everybody, you know, senses that there's been this shift," Obama said.

"It reminds me: We've got a tragic history when it comes to race in this country. We've got a lot of pent-up anger and bitterness and misunderstanding. ... This country wants to move beyond these kinds of things."
Criticize me and you are part of the forces of division. You're the one with the anger and bitterness and misunderstanding if you dwell on Wright's fomenting anger and bitterness and misunderstanding.

Actually - it's pretty clear that all of the people focusing on Wright are racists.

They're essentially saying that all black people (except Uncle Toms) are automatically disqualified from being President.

But the wingnuts don't care about htat. Why? Because they think that's a cool idea.

I know him as somebody who rants about "the United States of White America."

There are now reports that Wright was fond of saying this (and "bullshi*t" in the pulpit) and even that Obama was in attendance when those remarks were made in August 2007 and nodded approvingly

You do have to give Obama credit for being a rhetorical genius. It's like Hitler saying he can't respond to rumors of ill-treatment of Jews because he's busy trying to find a solution to anti-Semitism.

I don't allow any quarter regarding Rev Wright's bigoted and hateful remarks.

But again, this is not the sandbox we conservatives need to play in to point out Obama's shocking lack of experience and his dangerously poor judgment, as well as questions on his overall integrity. There are many more, far better examples than the rantings of a bitter, lost clergyman.

dtl - everything is relative, my old friend.

McCain hasn't carried on 20+ year relationships with any of the controversial preachers. Obama has a 20+ year close relationship with the Rev. Wright. The issue that bothers some serious people - though I think this will pass as an issue - is that it really is unlikely that Obama didn't know that the Rev really felt and spoke this way before. Obama only seems to address an issue when it comes up - he is never out in front of anything. And when he then distances himself, well, that just makes him a typical politician, and NOT a breath of fresh air.

In fact, that pretty much makes him incapable of being a "New" kind of candidiate, doesn't it?

In other words, by virtue of comparing Obama's stupidity to any other candidate, that proves that Obama is just business as ususal.

Please do allow me to say though that I am not demanding that Obama leave his church at all. In fact, in a previous post on Althouse, I stated that I thought he had said enough on this issue, and we should move on. I don't really care one way or the other if he and Michelle continue there - it isn't something that I will be using in discussions about Obama's candidacy.

As I said earlier, there are enough problems with Obama as a candidate already (cough!-Rezko-excuse me!) that this doesn't even matter.

Most of middle America can see Wright's church for what it is: A Klan rally in Blck sheets.

Obama needs to address the specifcs of Wright's hate speech point by point. He should explain what he did to heal the racial diversions at his church each Sunday. Another meeting with the Chicago press like he did with Rezko would be a start.

I'm afraid that I won't reveal which Church I attend, as that could break some of the enjoyable respite I find here in anonymity - I am listed on the church website.

I will say though that it is an evangelical "megachurch" - there are tons of them here in Southern Cal. And everyone of them has online service broadcasts and online archives.

But it's not just megachurches or even large churches that broadcast their services online. Many with congregations of around 200+ also broadcast online, even if only audio. Broadcasting is like vlogging - not too expensive, and relatively easy to do well. The biggest cost factor is archiving.

If you're interested, Rick Warren's Saddleback church has a great site with live services online - by the way, Obama spoke there, to much controversy, in 2006.

Her name is Kay Wilson and she lives in Olympia Field and she listens to you every day. That's what she told me.

Obama on the nappy headed ho' on how awful Imus is.

"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus," Obama told ABC News, "but I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude."

"He didn't just cross the line," Obama said. "He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women -- who I hope will be athletes -- that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It's one that I'm not interested in supporting."

DTL:
If you're really saying that Obama, or anyone else, should dump a loyal friend just because they made some stupid comments - then you are a complete asshole.

The point is that (1) these were not just "some stupid comments" but an attitude fundamental to Wright's character and his speech and yet (2) Obama is a "loyal friend" to Wright: Obama's choice of "loyal friends" shows something about his own character.

Wright is not running for President. Obama is. He has renounced was Wright said (which is stupid as well - because Obama didn't say them).

Reference above.

But to say that he should leave his church (which is what pompous assholes like you are demanding) is frankly - disgusting.

It's not that he should leave his church now, but that he should have left it years ago and he chose not to. His choosing to keep his family in that racist environment does not sit well with me.

Do I think Obama is a racist? No. (Though it is a legitimate question to ask). Rather, I think that his choice of church was a calculated political decision that was useful for a time but has costs on the national stage.

... And racist. Because you would never demand the same from a white person - if their preacher or priest said something stupid and bigoted (which they do EVERY day).

(1) You're making things up.

(2) I don't know what preachers or priests you've known, but I promise you that they aren't all as bad as you seem to think.

(3) Even if what you say were true, it's not the demand that Obama leave that's racist, it's the alleged double standard. The demand itself is still reasonable (though as I said, Obama should have left a long time ago).

(4) ... But what you say is not true.

If McCain had a similar long-standing relationship with a racist church I would want to know why and I would want some very good reasons not to hold it against him.

And no, an endorsement is not the same as a 20 year relationship--though it should be questioned, it's not at the same level of concern.

People like you disgust me.

Come on, DTL. Ad Hominem Never goes anywhere.

And here, at least, the reasons that these people "disgust" you seem to be nothing more than words you've placed in their mouths.

I suggest you go look up all the videos of Wright you can find and judge for yourself--just keep in mind that this is what Obama's been hearing (by his own choice) every Sunday for 20-odd years.

Good day.

There is a good example here of guilt by association. When I commented on downtowlad's statement, I didn't know he was gay, nor care. I never did anything to gays, or blacks, etc and I expect not to be treated as if I were the basher or lyncher. That is why Rev. Wrights remarks are inexcusable. Most of us out here, even the conservatives like me don't give a hoot if someone is black, blue, gay, or whatever as long as they are good citizens and neighbors and treat us with equal respect.

EnigmatiCore said...

"They're essentially saying that all black people (except Uncle Toms) are automatically disqualified from being President."

If the definition of a black person is someone who thinks like Wright does, and the definition of an Uncle Tom is one who does not think like Wright does, then let me be the first to say that by those definitions I think any black person as defined by downtownlad should be automatically disqualified from being President.

Further, given that Obama claims now (rather unbelievably) to find the expressed views of Wright to be reprehensible, then by downtownlad's definition, Obama is not a black person but just an Uncle Tom. Therefore, we are free to oppose Obama without being cast as racist because he's just an Uncle Tom, who by downtownlad's assertion we do not automatically disqualify from being President.

Or something like that. It is difficult for normal, middle of the road people to think the way partisan hacks do.

NotWhoIUsedtoBe said...

What I don't get is that racial ignorance by whites is deplorable (and there's a lot of it), but for blacks it's understandable. And it's ignorance, plain and simple. How can people actually believe AIDS was created to kill black people?

Rev. Wright is a symptom. These ideas and attitudes are actually very common. You've all heard them before. We ignore it most of the time, but they're there.

If we can't talk about ignorance, then it's really hard to dispel. So let's talk about it. Why do we allow so many wacko opinions to go unchallenged? Just because we're embarrassed to criticize anything coming from a group oppressed for so long? Just because of our own guilt?

You can't let history justify holding opinions that are nuts. Otherwise, pretty soon any libel can be justified on the basis that people already believe it. Dumb!

From Obama's book:

And so it went, a meditation on a fallen world. While the boys next to me doodled on their church bulletin, Reverend Wright spoke of Sharpsville and Hiroshima, the callousness of policy makers in the White House and in the State House. As the sermon unfolded, though, the stories of strife became more prosaic, the pain more immediate. The reverend spoke of the hardship that the congregation would face tomorrow, the pain of those far from the mountaintop, worrying about paying the light bill…

Looks like Obama also has tapes of Rev. Wrights eermon's AND obviously agrees with the POV. Certainly, his wife does. America is "Mean" and until Obama ran for POTUS didn't deserve her love or respect.

This "KKK America" attitude will be beloved by liberals. In the rest of the country - just the opposite.

Cedarford said...

My sense on Jeremiah Wright is that there is a lot of good, a lot of talent in the man - as well as Leftist crap and being someone that panders to the black racism of his audience.

If you want blame, it has to start with the people that truly shaped black attitudes and class resentments. Who made anti-Americanism and identity politics and victimization "the" thing black intellectuals did. That would be the communist Jews that set up the NAACP and other "Fronts" mainly as black grievance vehicles they would control behind the scenes. And black socialists like WEB Dubois, nourished by the Euro and NYC crowd - who wanted government-forced equality in all spheres. They won against the forces that emphasized self-reliance, and had created booming black metropolitan areas. That was the "self-education, hard work, family stability, and Uplift will come Naturally" approach of Booker T Washington and that school of thought.

Jeremiah Wright is a man of great achievements. Probably 95-98% of what he has done with his life is for the good. Juxtipose him with Billy Graham - who you can say was a force for huge good but if you look at his associations and sermons you can pull out some anti-semitism, toadying up to corporate wealth, groveling obsequiousness to the "greatness" of Presidents he pal'ed around with, like LJB and Nixon. Or Saint Martin, Himself. Whose quite odious side is discretely buried from view with his elevation to part-diety and perfect man and Greatest Head Negro, ever.

Wright was an accomplished scholar, with grad degrees not just in theology, but English. He has written 5 well-received books. He is a better-educated and smarter Mike Huckabee. He served with distinction in the Marines before becoming a preacher. Shifting from a GI to be a medical corpsman and the Valedictorian of his 1963 Marine medic class.

Along the way, he found himself preaching to an audience of grievance-nourishing blacks and tailored himself to that audience. Part of that is the recent black history where blacks fought for and got self-determination of the black civil rights movement and political control of black voters away from the control and manipulation of Jewish Leftists.

For the past, Jews are especially unpopular nationwide with african-americans..well-meaning in some ways, but guilty of economic exploitation of blacks and emasculating them, politically. Wright's preaching reflects that - but clings to the Leftist boilerplate that blacks were taught by Jewish communists leading the NAACP, SCLC, etc.

His anti-Iraq war Q&A is standard Lefty speak:

http://www.mindfully.org/Reform/2003/Iraq-IQ-Test-Wright23feb03.htm

For Obama, his problem is not Wright so much as all these associations with Left-radicals in his past that keep coming up, along with an extreme liberal voting record and lack of bipartisanship that suggests he is more like Jesse Jackson than a "person who transcends all race and petty politics". They keep popping up.

1. Wright is not like Mike Huckabee getting an endorsement from a Fundie Whacko he doesn't know. Obama knew Wright for 20 years after Michelle led him there, and called Wright a huge inspiration to him and his family. If he is to be believed, he knew nothing about some of Wright's views for 20 years, but listened enough to somehow be "transformed" and to show Wright's influence in the 2 books he wrote.

2.His "speech of superior judgment" turns out to be done at the direct request of a radical Jewish ex-SDS member (Marilyn Katz) who was to link Obama up with 4-5 Jewish Mega-Rich donors like Bettelu Saltzman, The Crown Family, Penny Pritzger - and to David Axelrod - all vehemently anti-Iraq war, as was the Mayor and the State's other Senator, Dick Durbin - who Saltzman was chief of staff for earlier.

3. His speech of "superior judgement" was delivered at a Jesse Jackson rally against the racist evil war, attended by 300 hardcore Left and various NOI, Chicago black activists. It was not daring because he was actually helping his re-election chances in his solid Left District and was just what the other Senator was saying and being anti-war opened up millions in funding for his Senate run from radical to liberal wealthy Elites.

3. He writes of his "mentor black" who substituted for his long-gone Biodaddy who turns out to be a flaming communist with a big FBI file.

4. We find out that Obama used NOI officers as part of campaigns. Shakir Mohammed was Obama's community rep in his state Senate campaign. Muslims Cynthia Miller served as his Senate election Treasurer, and Jennifer Mason as his current director of hiring and constituent services.

5. We find his sugar daddy, Tony Resko, didn't contribute 30,000 to Obama's state senate runs, but 150,000. A huge sum. And we find that Resko is partners with Elijah Mohammed's son, made 26 trips to the ME since 2002 for mostly undisclosed "business", and that former Saddam Hussein arms merchant and Iraqi billionaire Hamdi Auchi has apparantly paid for a lot of Obama campaign funding and part of Obama's house via "pass-through" money Resko handled.

6. We find that his mother elected to stay in Indonesia for 30 years after her divorce and only return when she was dying. That while in Indonesia, she made many Leftist, up to - anti-American remarks.

Every white person knows someone like David Duke. Just because you know someone, doesn't mean you choose to associate with them. Obama knew the church he was joining is into "liberation theology." He knows the line of preaching is "blame the white man." His church despises people like Bill Cosby, Condi Rice, and Colin Powell and embraces those like Farrakhan.

An African American who transcends race is someone who disassociates themselves with the radicalism of these types of groups both in words and action. Obama has a problem with the action part of it.

Obama will still get all the self loathing liberal whites to vote for him in the general election. Fortuantely for America, however, there are not enough of these self- loathing types to win (we hope).

Hitler Youth Rallies?? C'mon Fen. I despise Wright's rants as much as anyone and enjoy seeing Obama hoist on this petard. But I think the situation will play itself out just fine without invoking Godwin's Law. Now Saudi Madrassas, you may have a point ...
