"WILD COURIC RAW: ANCHOR CAUGHT OFF-CAMERA, AGAIN..."

Screams Drudge. I follow the link and see this video of Couric in her off-air moments on the night of the New Hampshire primary and find her completely sound and rather charming:

Thanks. Couldn't get to sleep for my siesta.

Drudge is a real hack's hack.

Katie is nearly as cute as John Edwards.

I just watched the video before I came over here. I agree with you. What is Drudge talking about? What, exactly, was "wild?"

I was expecting wildness and cheap thrills, not microphone and blouse fiddling and fidgeting

OT: Apple just introduced a laptop that is probably thinner than the first ipod.

Looks like she has had work done on her nose, cheeks, and chin and has had her forehead Botoxed.

Sigh.

Anyway....vital new essay on Growing Up with Katie and the Today Show in The Atlantic by Caitlin Flanagan

"The Today show creates a bond with its overwhelmingly female viewers because so many of them watch it, as I did, during one of the most psychologically complex and lonely—and most emotionally fulfilling—times of their lives: their tenure as mothers to small children....

"The signal aspect of Katie’s on-air personality—her unthreatening chumminess, her giggling girlishness—was perfectly suited to this essential part of the role: Katie was all the friends you left behind at work. She was commiseration and office pranks and flirting. It’s true that as more time passed after her husband’s death, she began to change in surprising ways, beginning with her appearance. Slowly, slowly, slowly—and then all at once—the Fantastic Sams/Casual Corner look was gone, and in its place was a version of New York sophistication marked by short skirts and complicated shoes. It was as though she’d gone backward through the familiar process that had taken Diane Sawyer, her rival, from pageant queen to journalist.

Her new, post-grief self also took on dimensions that were off-putting..."

Everyone reads Drudge. Is he the most powerful person on the internet?

I'm guessing Drudge is getting royalties for every time that vid is played. And alpha: I dont know anyone that thinks that Drudge is some kind of journalist. He's simply a gossip monger who can slap a juicy headline on a non-story, get lots of hits, and sell lots of advertising. Is this a great country or what!!!

The video shows that with her, what you see is what you get. Like most anchors- male and female-she is no jounalist or even a reporter. She is a reader and one in the long line of TV news readers. Something a six year old could do.

The info babes on fox are MUCH hotter--Katie is losing her perkiness before our very eyes.

Pretty boring. Much like the news program she anchors.

OT: Professor - planning on buying a MacBook Air?

Drudge's value goes down the crapper if he doesn't have screaming banners and flaming promotional copy.

If his website were judged on the value of his content to his consumers, without emotional hype, his web site would be a different web site... it would be the National Review, for example.

Hey, that was good news. They have the on-air and off-air switched.

The difference is that there's no soap audience assumed in the clip.

Everybody there is sane suddenly.

After a bunch of stuff on Drudge turned out to be false, I compared him to the National Enquirer.

But I can now see that was wrong. At least the Enquirer pays paparazzi to take pictures that someone might be titillated by.

As this was Katie Couric II: The Sequel, I suspect she was playing with him.

Rick Lee said...

Well... that was a lot to sit through to get to hear Katie say the S-word 4 or 5 times.

What you have in the clip is essentially the Imus show.

rhhardin said...

For instance, from today's Imus, a little offstage intern instruction is reported.

She needs to stop the cosmetic treatments...her face is looking so fake. The rest of it, meh. She seems like she's a little unprepared for 15 million a year, though.

No really good catch phrases in there.

What it needed was "Don't make (*&*( maniac out of me" or "The guys get shirts" or something.

Does Drudge always sound like he's pitching the latest "Girls Gone Wild" DVD?

Nothing to see here folks, move along.

"Giuliani is dead..."

Heh, that made me laugh.

Will Conway said...

That seemed like pretty typical preparation for a segment... wasn't any big deal. If anything, it humanizes Katie.

"Giuliani is dead..."

So that's why he looks like Nosferatu.

Yep, as much as I despise Couric, I expected far worse. She seemed like a normal gal, doing her job.

I'd like to charge the Drudge report for making me waste those 5 minutes of my life. I want them back.

This is not too bad and seems like standard stuff. Listen to her off-camera talk from the August 5 Le Show from Harry Shearer. http://www.kcrw.com/etc/programs/ls/ls070805le_show_-_august_5_2
He has a long clip from Katie from the site of the MN bridge collapse which is much more telling about her true colors (it is around halfway through the show). She seems much more concerned about her hair and whether her shot is better than the other stations than anything else.

I have never watched Katie Couric. But, if this was the news, I'd probably watch every day.
