New U.S. News Rankings.

This purports to be the leaking of the new 2008 rank. Wisconsin +1.

I can only speak about the California schools:

Berkeley (Boalt) should not be at #9. That's ridiculous, they are a top-5 school, everybody knows that.

Look at Stanford at #3--I don't think so.

You know what it is....it's the old snobbery between a public and a private school. Because Stanford is a private school with a huge endowment and high donorship (fundraising).... that gets them into the top-5.

Boalt, a public institution, that hasn't been nearly as successful at fundraising, gets lower ranked.

Obviously Stanford and Boalt should be reversed.

It's all about public vs. private schools. Nothing more.

Peace, Maxine

NYU should be number 1:-) But I am happy enough that we finished ahead of Columbia.

As for Maxine's comments, I believe Boalt loses points because it is a little bit more of a regional school than Stanford is and because it is a state school, an in-state applicant who gets into Boalt has on average lower credentials than a Stanford Law admit. That is not necessarily true for out ot state students though.

How about Alabama coming in at 36, now tied with UNC, Wake Forest, and UGA? That's an impressive rise for a school that wasn't in the top 50 a few short years ago. Good for them.

Distressing to see UVa slip out of its long-time tie with Michigan.

"I can't warrant the accuracy of the data, nor do I know who deserves credit for this "scoop."

Then why do they publish it? You know it will be cut and paste and pretty soon the disclaimer will hit the cutting room floor.

It is irresponsible to publish a "list" if you don't know.

Our institution, like others, is very aggressive about these rankings in Medicine. Most folks with inside knowledge about those schools profess not to believe them, me included. But they seem to matter a whole lot to alot of people. As a result, factors favored in rankings are given some priority, not unlike how high schools teach with the SAT in mind.

US News has their own little NCAA tournament. And it appears 'not playing' is not an option.

Noooo!

Were these generated before or after the Kaplan brouhaha?

Before.

Before.

I suspect that when the next list is generated, the memory of Kaplan's saga will distant enough to cause little impact. How fortunate for the Dean.

When I went to the UW we were ranked 22nd.

How unfortunate.

Sloan: We rank 19th on academic reputation and 26th on lawyer/judge reputation. A question you might have is whether we should skew admissions more toward LSAT scores to move up in the rankings. It would have a big effect, I think, and would be easy to do, but it is against what a lot of people here believe in.

Hey! Where's Widener Law on that list?

Maybe it should pay more for its blog ads.

Ha!

IU's 85th?

And it's not even the main Bloomington campus Law School, it's the Indianapolis campus one??
