Besides, the Academy did not seem to punish Tom Hanks for Joe vs. the Volcano
Joe vs. the Volcano has a substantial cult following, actually. Its a strange little movie.
It does kind of seem like an Oscar-caliber actor shouldn't be spending his time making fun of fat people. I haven't seen Dreamgirls, though, so maybe Eddie was brilliant in it.
Is the Actor making fun of the fat person, or is the writer?
Well, Murphy's the producer and shares the story credit with his brother. So even if "I just chose to take the part, I didn't create it" was a good defense, it wouldn't really help him in this specific case. :)
Such strange times we live in, when fat an erstwhile innocent adjective is an insult and, Heaven forbid one says anything about a fat person. If you don't like being fat stop chowing down!!! The less than 1% that have hormonal issues can disregard the above statement. I'm short and people make all sorts of funny statements (some might consider some of those statements nasty I find them amusing) about short people all the time, I don't care and that's something I can't even do anything about. Gawd!!!!

Give him the Oscar . . .
For Dreamgirls this year, or Norbit next year?
You should warn people about the horrifying image at the end of that link.

Excellent make-up artist, by the way.
