Ann, I think I'll watch. (At least they won't be singing Winchester Cathedral) Queen has some nice singable songs (You're my best friend comes to mind). AI certainly has potential howlingly funny written all over it tonight.
Yikes, this sounds like a train wreck looking for a place to derail.
I can't imagine that AmIdol contestants have the kind of experience or style it takes to really carry this material off. Whatever else he was (not a nice human being) Freddie Mercury was quirky and original and smart and witty and I just don't think any group of AmIdol kids can compare.
_And_ they're not even including my two favorite Queen songs, Killer Queen (probably for the best that they're leaving that one be) and I Want to Break Free, as Idol-friendly a song as they ever did.
I'm almost sorry I don't live in the US, this sounds like self-mortification in its purest form.
knoxgirl: I actually caught your comment before you deleted. It made me giggle anyhow. Reminded me of my grandma's subtle the-Japanese-are-the-superior-Asian-race comments. Except yours was intentionally funny.
Argh! Why do my links show up perfectly in preview and then screw up once published? And why only sometimes?
Anyhow, MadisonMan: I just discovered this guy's site last week. http://www.rickey.org/ He has the mp3s of the performances up pretty quickly and the videos within a few days.
I think that watching Idol tonight will be like watching a traffic accident. There is no way most of these kids are up to it.
While viewing last Sunday's episode of the Sopranos, I was struck by the quality of the young woman singing with the band playing for the wedding scenes. She was at least the equal of most of the remailning Idol contestants. It reminded me of Simon Cowell's frequent allusions to the "wedding singer" ordinariness of the contestants. Right, as usual, Mr. Cowell.

I'm cringing already.

Ann: I think the link goes to the trailer you mention in the last post. Is that intentional?
Oh, Jim, I see you've already pointed that out. Maybe it's a reference neither of us get!
I've heard that Kellie (of all people) will be singing Bohemian Rhapsody. If true, I wouldn't miss that for anything!
cheese grater to nether regions or Queen on American Idol?
Tough call!
Here's the list of who is singing what (supposedly).
Sorry about the wrong link. I've fixed it now. And thanks for trying to find a way to interpret it as not a mistake!
The cool thing about this theme is that some singers will be bad in a very funny way and there's random potential for singers to do really well.
Last year, Constantine did "Bohemian Rhapsody," which seemed as though it would be a disaster, but it was really cool. I loved that.
In US Today Kellie is going to sing "Bohemian Rhapsody". Country Version.
This is the most fabulous thing I've heard in weeks. Perfect opportunity to throw an evening coctail party! Thanks for the tip!
Fortunately, I don't have a conflicting dinner & lecture interfering with tonight's great pleasure! Everything is for the best.
This promises to be something like we've
never
seen
before.
My mind--and ears!--are already reeling!!!

sorry I'm getting carried away in my anticipation
I'm sure a podcast of the AI singers singing Queen will be available soon. I'd forgotten about Killer Queen...great song!
BTW -- is it just me or does the picture of Frist with an ipod in Ann's ads look remarkably fake -- like the ipod was pasted on?

jennifer: hehe, I was afraid I was askin' for trouble on that one and so deleted... but thanks!
... also, great link! now I can waste *more* time with my co-workers on Wednesdays over-analyzing the performances : P
There's your answer! American Idol is nothing if not a highly effective product placement vehicle.

Elliot - "You're my best friend." Nothing else will do.
That grey haired guy will undoubtedly do "Crazy little thing called love..."
I can't imagine what Chris will do.
