"The New York Times found hundreds of X accounts sharing images of dead bodies, claiming to be Israeli civilians killed in the last 24 hours of fighting."

"Some of the images viewed by the Times appeared to be manipulated and edited. Underneath some of the videos and images posted on X, people warned that they could be spread as part of a campaign to stoke fear among Israelis. Some of the accounts claimed to be working on behalf of Hamas. On WhatsApp, Israelis warned each other not to look at X, which often auto-plays videos without warning. 'Don’t look, you might see someone you know,' wrote one person on a WhatsApp group dedicated to a neighborhood of South Tel Aviv. There is a long history of misinformation being shared among Israeli and Palestinian groups, with false claims and conspiracies spiking during moments of heightened violence in the region. Since Elon Musk took ownership of the platform one year ago, he has eliminated many of the content moderation teams that once removed violent imagery from the platform...."

ADDED: From "German tattoo artist ID’d as woman paraded through streets by Hamas" (NY Post):
[A] cousin spotted footage of Shani online as her body appeared lifeless and surrounded by armed militants in the back of the truck. One Hamas fighter had his leg over her waist as another grabbed part of her dreadlocks. Her legs were unnaturally laid out in the back of the truck. Her parents watched the video to confirm it was their daughter.... 'We recognized her by the tattoos, and she has long dreadlocks'....

AND: From "Israeli student screams ‘Don’t kill me’ as Hamas terrorists kidnap her from rave: horrifying video" (NY Post):

Hamas terrorists kidnapped a Israeli student while she was attending a rave near the Gaza Strip to celebrate the end of the Jewish holiday Sukkot, distressing video released by her family shows. Noa Argamani, 25, was enjoying the trance music festival near Kibbutz Re’im before terrorists opened fire and launched rockets into the crowd. Argamani is seen being carted away on a Palestinian gunman’s motorcycle as she screams “Don’t kill me! No, no, no,” while her boyfriend, Avi Nathan, is manhandled by terrorists.

Israelis' shock is understandable, but I would have expected greater fortitude. Their fear and dismay signal exploitable weakness.

I'm sure they'll get their military act together. Whether they'll have the nerve to do what needs to be done remains to be seen.

Shorter NYT, "you can't be trusted to tell the story of the 50-year anniversary attacks of Yom Kippur, because you might tell the truth with visuals that stoke a visceral reaction against Hamas".

With Saturday’s violent attack, Hamas sends a message to the Middle East during a moment of change. The deadly Palestinian coordinated action comes amid rapprochement between Israel and Saudi Arabia, anathema to the Islamist movement that rules Gaza.

In recent weeks, the negotiation of a pact between Washington and Riyadh that would involve recognition of the Jewish state has gained traction. “We are getting closer every day,” Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said [with his bone saw in hand].

People need to see things for themselves and decide if they believe an image or video or phrase- or if they think its bullshit. People are beginning to lose the abilities that keep them alive. H

It's not worth it to trade freedom for safety. "I have this team that will protect you from seeing nasty things, and all it will cost you is that they will deny you any information that might lead you to vote for any person they don't want, or question any narrative that they want you to accept."

I think that X is doomed ever since they posted that community note that showed that SoS Blinken was plain lying a week ago when he tried to suggest that Russia had been behind Holocaust atrocities committed by the Germans with enthusiastic Ukrainian support.

The video of a young woman’s nude body — since identified as German citizen Shani Louk — does not look manipulated. It looks horrific. My sympathies are to her devastated friends and relatives.

Underneath some of the videos and images posted on X, people warned that they could be spread as part of a campaign to stoke fear among Israelis.

@Althouse, it seems to me that the videos and images posted on X don’t have to be faked to “be spread as part of a campaign to stoke fear among Israelis.” Indeed, the more real and more horrific the acts captured in pixels, the more effective the terror campaign would be.

And then we get to the favorite buzzword of the Times since circa 2017: “misinformation.” In the hands of the New York Times and the Washington Post that word, and it’s cousin “disinformation,” have come to mean “information that is real, but we wish it wasn’t because it undermines the Narrative that we want to push “. Things like the efficacy of HCQ and Ivermectin — and the efficacy of COVID vaccines, for that matter. Like Hunter Biden’s laptop. Like the laboratory origins of COVID-19.

This article comes across as an attempt to bash Elon Musk for his efforts to remove censorship from X. Are you pushing it in your blog to show the strength of your own commitment to free speech?

Musk eliminated the elite journalists, CIA embeds, Democrat Party stooges and politicians who were destroying the First Amendment by controlling speech on Twitter in a 1984-esque hellscape they were trying to create.

The New York Times prints lies all the time. They want to be the only lie merchants in town, it seems and don't like Twitter horning in on their grift. They wish to be the gatekeepers of truth so that it is THEY and ONLY THEY who the power brokers must bribe.

They don't like it when people do their jobs better and don't need them any more. How many American journalists - not local Palestinian terrorists - does the New York Times employ? ZERO that's how many.

From Matt Vespa, writing for Townhall.com:

The attacks on innocent Israelis in Southern Israel reportedly included the rape of young girls.

And yet, the liberal media reaction to Hamas’ terrorist attack that sparked a new war is as expected—they blame Israel or insinuate that they had it coming. The New York Times, CNN, and MSNBC were all had their ‘those poor Palestinian terrorists’ talking points.

Buckwheathikes said...

The New York Times has NOT published graphic, unedited photos of the Palestinian terrorist attacks. That's because the New York Times supports the terrorists and don't wish their US audiences to be able to see what these Palestinian terrorists are doing.

They want to be able to create a FALSE narrative and these photographs destroy that narrative.

So of course they'd be very creative in how they caution people that there's "misinformation" in these photos and urge people not to look at X.

They've not had any concern when Reuters was caught digitally faking 920 Lebanon war photos. Because they and Reuters support the terrorists.

This sounds like the perfect MSM propaganda article intended for you boomers who have some sort of personal rule not to witness death on film. "Oh don't believe what others who have seen it are saying, it isn't that bad". My boomer father is the same way, relying on the MSM for their description of George Floyd's death. "Oh police brutality killed that wonderful man." Go ahead and listen to the NYT tell you how the footage may "appear" to be edited amd manipulated. Grow up already and judge for yourself. Give your lying eyes a chance. Don't let the NYT edit amd manipulate your perception of reality.

In related news:

The Biden administration was forced to delete a Saturday morning tweet from its Palestinian Affairs office calling on Israel to stand down amid a fresh wave of Hamas terror attacks that have left scores of Jews dead …

Per the US State Department: “This tweet was not approved and does not represent U.S. policy,”

Are they talking about images of dead bodies where faces and portions of clothing have been pixilated to prevent identification? Is that what they mean by “edited”? Are they being dishonest, as well as antisemitic?

Musk should buy the NYT.

Yeah, I know, family owned yadda, yadda. But I suspect that if offered enough money, they would sell.

Getting Mexico out might be harder. They need the good coverage slim's money buys. But it is debt, not equity so should no be a huge problem.

And even if Musk did not succeed, or even seriously try to make the deal, the entertainment value would be through the roof.

We have seen images of how Islamic militants treat their enemies in Syria, Libya, Iraq, Lebanon, Algeria, and everywhere else. In many cases, their enemies have the same nationality and faith as the militants. There is no reason to believe that they will treat the Israelis better and every reason to believe that they will, in fact, treat them worse. The only caveat I would add is that in most cases it is impossible for them to treat their captives worse. These Islamic militants are horrible people and it is not propaganda to depict them as horrible people.

The most striking thing to me, though, is how all those civilians were unarmed just kilometers from people who would want to maim, rape, and kill them. It is shocking to me that Israelis apparently prevent their civilians from carrying weapons.

Here are some scary facts for Israel:

The birthrate in Gaza (30/1000) is nearly double that of Israel (17/1000). The median age in Gaza is 17, in Israel it is 30. In the Westbank it is 26/1000 and 21.

It's 2023. In 2022, the amped up Russian invasion of Ukraine brought us "social media" war. The young Ukrainians proved very good at that, plus improvising relatively cheap smart munitions using drones. I suppose Hamas was paying good attention to that, even if Israel was not, and so we have this fresh horror, with more to come. The worst failure of Israeli intelligence since Yom Kippur. Long after 1973, it came out that the USA knew what was happening but didn't warn Israel. I wonder if it will prove the same this time? It's an awfully big operation to have featured perfect OPSEC.

The German/Israeli girl who met such a horrible end was at a "Rave for Peace". I guess it defeats the purpose of a Rave for Peace to take weapons to such an event....I can't help thinking about that young man in the Werner Herzog documentary who thought grizzly bears were his friends and didn't so much as pack bear spray in his camping equipment.....I think this will radically change the minds of people in Israel about the nature of Hamas. There won't be any more raves for peace. But perhaps not so much here. I'm sure many in the Biden administration will tell Israel that it's important to not make a "disproportionate" response to this atrocity.

The arc of history doesn't bend towards justice. It bends towards whoever is bending the arc of history. The men of Afghanistan can take pride in successfully defeating the occupations of both the Russians and the Americans. The women of Afghanistan have, however, less reason to celebrate....I think America's sudden and disorganized withdrawal from Afghanistan must have given encouragement to Hamas. If they continue steadfast for another fifty or one hundred years, perhaps the Israelis will give up or, what's perhaps more likely, America will give up its commitment to Israel. American feminists weren't exactly steadfast to their commitment to the women of Afghanistan....This will play out badly for both the Israelis and the Palestinians. I hope it plays out worse for the Palestinians, but there's no end in sight.

If you don't allow unpleasant governments to speak their minds where people can see them for what they are, you might as well hide with a bag over your head, or more accurately, entrust your future to citizens who know you are "protecting" them. A Community Notes disclaimer should suffice.

OMG, "violent imagery." You mean, showing atrocities? Hamas is not at all interested in concealing what it has done from the world; quite the contrary. But Elon Musk evidently has a duty to protect us from the nasty sights. Honestly, where do you think the images and video are coming from? Hint: They aren't Israeli propaganda.

Those images of Hamas atrocities would help stem the images sure to come of "look at the poor wounded or dead in Gaza".

Can't have the "Israel must stand down for humanitarian reasons" be undermined.

At least, for now, 5,000 rockets and the invasion of Israel has limited the asymmetrical warfare crap.

Another unspeakable tragedy brought about by Muslim terrorists. It's a truly sickening coincidence that (some?/many?) of the victims were attending a "rave for peace" event. Peace requires people acting in good faith. Not much of that exists within terrorist groups, notwithstanding what one might read in the NYT.

Video autoplay can usually be controlled by device or application settings, though how easily it can be manipulated varies. It also varies by device and sometimes by network connection. Videos often don't autoplay on a cellphone using a mobile connection but almost always do on a personal computer under the assumption the pc has more bandwidth available.
