"It is in a world of glaring clarity, self-assurance and high-wire prosecution work that [Jack] Smith has positioned himself in his long career."
"A question that hovers over him is whether the moral clarity is always clear to everyone else. Does he sometimes see wrongdoing when it isn’t there? Or is it that the juries and judges who have disagreed with him simply failed to see what seemed so obvious to him?
What he sees in Trump is more than just a criminal who sought to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power by overturning the 2020 election results, and who endangered the nation by sloppily hoarding secret papers and other documents that belong in the National Archives or secure government facilities. He sees a man who knew full well that he was committing those crimes."

WaPo is worried and hoping they can project the right path for Smith to follow. Unfortunately for WaPo, they are mentally deficient as well.

Was Trump storing them in a janitor's closet or some box in his garage?
Oh, what matters is that he knew what he was doing. If Trump pretended senility and couldn't recall why he did it, like Hillary and her server, then it would be ok?
If Smith can't get a conviction, it's never his fault, it's just that others can't see his genius. Stalin never had this problem.
"glaring clarity, self-assurance and high-wire prosecution"
IOW, an arrogant fanatic inquisitor. The worst kind.
That fool needs to give it a rest.
He isn't some Marvel character with superlawyer mindreading abilities. Steely-eyed. FFS.
You tagged this post with “prosecutorial ethics”? You mean there actually is such a thing?
Back in 2020, the New Yorker ran an interesting story...
Is America Becoming a Banana Republic?
"Donald Trump thinks that the Presidency is like some banana republic dictatorship where you can lock up your political opponents."
Trump constantly referred to Hillary as a criminal, because she was a criminal. But when he became president, he decided not to pursue criminal charges against her. It would look bad.
Democrats in their one-party states have no idea how much they are despised. Democrats have accused Trump of being Hitler, and they've accused him of being a spy for Putin. They've thrown so many reckless and ridiculous charges against him, they have utterly and completely poisoned the well.
They're so much hate against Trump, if the judicial system wants to keep its credibility, you have to go overboard to protect him against prejudice.
You could start by removing all the Democrats from the jury pool. You have to remove all this hatred from his criminal trial. Which is going to be hard to do, because our Pravda media has been stirring up hate and prejudice against him for a decade. They've already had one show trial running on TV for over a year.
The fanatics, who're doing destruction to norms of legal behavior are Jack Smith and his ilk.
Smith should hit Subway for another ham sandwich.
Hard to see out of those steely eyes.
Is that really what you want in a prosecutor? Sounds like another way of saying Smith has a huge ego, enormous ambition and is willing to do whatever because it's all about him.
This piece feels like the writer was fantasizing about being Trump's prosecutor himself.
The writer has confused moral clarity with absolute certainty. I don't know if Jack Smith is certain, but this reporter sure is. Certainty cannot be trusted and any journalist worthy of the name knows that.
You know when the left is praising someone for their morality something immoral is happening.
If PolPot were a democrat the WaPo would find a way to praise him for population reduction via truck axel.

If only the FBI and news outlets had done due diligence...
In other words, he pursues people who the Left considers enemies without regard to evidence, ethics, or his reputation (except accolades for being their attack dog)
Beria would be proud.
How is it like to be prosecuted by Stalin? The steely eyed dicator is known for his persistance, pipe smoking, and attention to detail. "He's like a dog with a bone", said Mr. Stalin's long associate Beria, "Once he decides you might be a wrecker or counter-revolutionary he never lets up".
Others say Stalin, follows the law, pointing out that he doesn't send just anyone to the Gulag and that everyone gets a fair trial, and a defense. "I've seen a more fair trial or a better prepared prosecution case, than the one Stalin put together against Trotsky, Yagoda and Rykov said Joe Davies, the US Ambassador. "Stalin really knows the Soviet constitution and the laws".
We contacted numerous Stalin associates, several of whom could not be located, but they all said the said thing: "Joe really hates fascists but loves the law. You'll get a fair shake from Joe Stalin".
"Steely?" He always impresses me as being quietly terrified, perhaps mildly nauseated.
Saint Croix. “ Democrats in their one-party states have no idea how much they are despised. Democrats have accused Trump of being Hitler, and they've accused him of being a spy for Putin. They've thrown so many reckless and ridiculous charges against him, they have utterly and completely poisoned the well.”
Nailed it.
What I quoted I did not take to be complimenting Smith. It’s a criticism.
The tag “prosecutorial ethics” means that’s the issue, not that the prosecutor is ethical!
He is just an enforcer for the Mob.
They say he has steely eyes, but he's really just a Steely Dan.
Is having a reputation for taking on… controversial, if not clear cut obvious malfeasance cases, not considered selling out?
Selling out to high profile notoriety?
Seems like Trump is getting prosecuted using Trumpian ethics… or something.
What Jack Smith understands is that justice in these cases is eventually going to be handed down by juries. Accordingly, he is lining up cases in which the charges are serious and easy to understand, and the evidence is clear and compelling. No technicalities here. We can already see that coming in the documents case. What Smith is going to be asking is that juries see what is right in front of them, and it is going to be plain as day.
They also like to talk about him being some pumped up work hero badass. I’m guessing there are several over 60’s here that could shut that shit up quick.
@Althouse, I got all that. My question stands.
Jack Smith’s prosecution of McDonnell ended with an 8-0 rebuke by the Supreme Court. Obviously Smith ignored this rebuke.
Smith is an unbridled partisan as his record clearly shows. He is a hit man for Democrat election interference.

========
is there law requiring “prosecutorial ethics”?
So he's 'steely' and 'enigmatic.'
Do the reporters want to fuck him?
Like liberals wanted to fuck Tsarnaev after he made the cover of 'Rolling Stone'?
"What Smith is going to be asking is that juries see what is right in front of them, and it is going to be plain as day."
That's Rich.
"steely!" "enigmatic!" Lord help us find some actual journalists in place of brain damaged fanboys.
John Marshall famously observed "the power to tax involves the power to destroy." With the Trump and January 6 indictments, we see that is even truer of the power to prosecute. A prosecution, however baseless, can financially destroy anyone--even a multi-billion dollar enterprise-- long before SCOTUS can render justice. But as we've seen repeatedly over the last 25 years, when you're on the "right side of history" that is all the ethics one needs.
As Goldenpause mentions above @10:34, Smith's DOJ prosecution of VA Gov. McDonnell for corruption ended in a 9 -0 rebuke by the SCOTUS. I'm sorry, but if you're DOJ's chief prosecutor in a case that the SCOTUS unanimously trashes, you finish your career at DOJ working out of a broom closet. The fact that he was tapped to lead the assault against Trump shows that he is simply a reliable attack dog for the Deep State, and that this is simply an ideological show trial.
Watching Smith heading back to his office with his ham sammich from Subway a few months back, I’d say a steely mince and enigmatic light loafering was more his style.
Smith also likes to go to Subway for lunch with a large entourage in black SUVs, CNN told me so.
Jack Smith likes prosecuting “people who weren’t captured.”
#JackSmithIsLikeTrump
"...who is known for psyching out adversaries."
I think I'll pop some popcorn. This will be interesting. Smith might have bitten off more than he can chew.
Memo to Jack Smith - more Atticus Finch,, loess Lavrentiy Beria.
And Biden’s hiding thousands of documents in multiple locations was just an honest mistake.

Quite the contrary. People who are not privileged to live in the blessed state of Virginia are probably unaware that very popular Governor Bob McDonnell was being seriously touted as potential Presidential candidate in the run-up to the 2016 campaign. Smith’s baseless charges torpedoed McDonnell’s candidacy before he was even able to declare it. Mission accomplished, regardless of what the Supreme Court had to say. I have no idea whether he’d have beaten Donald Trump for the nomination, but we could, in theory, have been heading into the last year of McDonnell’s second term instead of a Trump-Biden rematch.
Fingers crossed that the orange peril has met his match.
Guys like Smith and Merrick Garland and James Comey are errand boys. Always were.
Self respect is not important to many people.
And Biden’s hiding thousands of documents in multiple locations was just an honest mistake.
The name Biden should never be associated with the word “honest.”
