"News of Sen. Ben Ray Luján’s (D-N.M.) stroke sent shockwaves through the Senate on Tuesday, underscoring the fragility of Democrats’ 50-50 majority."

Democrats are in the majority because they have 50 seats and the ability for Vice President Harris to break a tie. Luján’s absence leaves them at 49 seats until he returns, with his office saying he’s expected to make a full recovery. 'It's just a reminder that in a 50-50 Senate any unexpected development could be a challenge to our moving forward on an agenda that the Democratic caucus shares,' said Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), who said he was very optimistic that the 49-year-old Luján would make a full recovery."

The Hill reports.

I suppose the Democrats are working hard at understanding how to be properly discreet as they endeavor to will a Luján resignation into being. Of course, I hope the poor man does well, but I can't believe the Democrats intend wait for his return.

ADDED: In New Mexico, the governor would name a new senator if there is a vacancy. The governor is Michelle Lujan Grisham, and, in case you're wondering, "Michelle Lujan Grisham and Ben Ray Luján aren’t cousins."

Good. Fuck these assholes. When you try over and over to cram stuff down the throat of your opponents, nobody you're trying to run over will care about your adversity.

This (or any other of the many older senators dying or being hospitalized) leads to interesting SCOTUS scenarios/speculation.

I particularly enjoy the stress/crazy it imposes on the leftists.

This or any senator who can’t make it or DC for the vote causes them delay. Hate to lose 50-49.

Lose a senator, any senator, causes a delay while that state elects/appoints a replacement.

Lose one from a state with a Republican Governor/State Government and you may lose the senate majority altogether.

Should be another fun season to watch these shenanigans.

A friend in Atlanta had one back in 2010 or so when she was about that age. Her husband and daughter realized something big was wrong and got her to the hospital quickly so the long term effects were mild. She's an ultra-runner and besides that generally mentally and physically healthy. Based on her experience I believe the senator should be able to resume his duties in 10 to 12 months.

No need to pressure Senator Luján to resign. Senator Collins and Murkowski are easy Republican votes to confirm most of the nominees Biden might pick. And, though the replacement senator will get to participate in the fun of the 50-50 Senate for a few months, they’ll be up for election in the midterm this fall. Luján won by 6% in 2020. It would be a relatively easy target for Republicans to pick the seat up from an appointed senator, a type whose track record in winning their own election isn’t great.

There also appears, maybe, to have been an explosion of cancer too. If so, the mechanism may be the crash of killer T Cells after 2nd and subsequent jabs. One doctor has found hundreds of percent increases in some cancers over the last year. What is often forgotten is that our immune systems hold many cancers at bay, as well as viruses, like herpes and shingles that are hidden deeply enough that we never completely get rid of them. Our immune systems are, usually, finely tuned machines, and these gene therapy “vaccines” were intentionally designed to short circuit some of their mechanisms. One way that you can look at their effects are direct and indirect. The heart, lung, and brain issues are more likely due to the toxic spike proteins migrating to where they shouldn’t be, while the indirect primarily involve significantly degrading our immune systems for a period of time. The first jab primes the immune system, while the massive dump of spike proteins in 2nd and subsequent jabs can cause it to overreact.

I think that the demand by Dems for COVID-19 vaccinations will, in fairly short order, start to massively rebound against them. They appear to be killing parents and grandchildren, in order to protect their grandparents from dying of the virus - except that these vaccines don’t even do that.

It is not minor. It indicates a fairly large stroke. Mortality rate after the decompression is about 30%. In the other 70% significant neurologic deficit is common. He's young, and statistically that will help him.

His recovery course if he's in the 70% could drag out. I'll leave it to you to guess which group lots of Democrats, in their heart of hearts, are hoping for. Myself, I don't have much trouble making that guess.

I think that one of the major differences between the D's and R's is that the D's are relentless and merciless. When it seems like they are down they will move forward in any way they can, legal/moral or not. The R's still make a show of playing by the rules and can be easily bought with vague promises. If, as expected, the R's take the House and Senate the D's won't change anything. They will just push forward using any lever that they can. They are like a slow moving viscous alien that eventually engulfs an object and devours it. I have always liked being on the side that plays by the rules but sadly now think that the D's have to be crushed somehow to save the country for the next generation. To do that the R's must be tactically smart and take what victories they can and accumulate overwhelming political and cultural power over time. Smart, focused and patient.

The strokes associated with COVID vaccines are thombotic in origin (blood clots). The lab tests to check for this are readily available but one of them (anti-PF4 antibodies) might take a few days.

However, the Senator had decompressive surgery which would be likely for either a SDH (subdural hematoma) or a SAH (sub-arachnoid hemorrhage), both of would very unlikely to be related to COVID or vaccine. Since the decompression was cerebellar, he likely will have to deal with coordination and balance rehabilitation, but cognitive function would be intact.

Would releasing the Senator's lab tests, CT/MRI scans, and angiogram put speculation to rest or just make for more detailed ghoulish speculation?

Q: Can the coronavirus (COVID-19) cause a stroke?
A: With what seems like an ever-growing list of problems COVID-19 can cause, you might also wonder if the coronavirus can cause a stroke.

While researchers are still studying exactly how COVID-19 affects the brain, the evidence does suggest it could increase stroke risk. But these strokes caused by blood clots appear to be impacting younger people.

It’s not a classic situation of stroke. We’re actually seeing young people who don’t have the traditional risk factors for stroke like high blood pressure, or other problems. These are young, healthy people, who are coming in with big, big strokes.

So, until Lujan gets back, McConnell should be the Senate Majority leader, GOP Senators should become the Chairs of every Committee and Sub-Committee, and the GOP should now have subpoena power

With Majority Leader status comes the ability to schedule votes. So time to make the Dem Senators up for re-election in November have to make a bunch of painful votes.

Myocardial infarction (heart attack) -- 269% increase
Cancer diagnoses -- 300% increase
Miscarriage -- 300% increase
Bell’s palsy -- 291% increase
Congenital malformations (for children of military personnel) – 156% increase

Good work, Howard. I think you got an insult every six words and, at the end there, you managed to insult half the men and all the women in the country. I like to see a solid job. Are insults the way to go? For the Dems with their slim majorities and Biden's terrible polling, I would say - yes.

What are you talking about? The seat isn't disappearing. If Mr. accented last name dies or is disabled, then the D Governor of NM will appoint another Democrat. And as long as he's in the Senate, the D's have the majority.

Damn what a Dumbo!

ProTip: It's a bad idea to call someone else a "Dumbo" when you're being clueless.

As long as he's not available for votes, the Dems do NOT have a majority (at least, not once the 3 GOP Senators "with Covid" get out of quarantine).

However, if he resigns and someone new is appointed, that someone new has to win a vote at the next Statewide general election.

As 2022 is shaping up to be a bad year for Democrats, they're going to not want him to resign before the election cut-off data (sadly, I can't find out what that is)

Don't worry. Romney, Collins, or Murkowski, or even Graham, will conveniently become unable to attend any hearing due to sympathy pains.

People like Tim who have been wrong about everything and sanctimonious bad faith assholes about it earned the lack of respect that they get.

Wow, you sure are mad that I checked your link yesterday, and then today backed up my statement about COVID and strokes from a medical site and an article that was published before the jab was even approved, when there was no way to blame the sudden increase in strokes among the young on it, since, wait for it.... the jab did not yet exist.

You want me to go back a year or so when you and Ken B. Were calling us murderers and deniers?

This has nothing to do with asking about the link. This is about your completely illiterate ramblings about "exponential" growth. This is about you calling people who opposed lock downs immoral murderers. This is about you running around with CDC lies and attacking people who noticed ivermectin and Hydroxycholoroquine worked in other countries.

You are not going to get to run away from your douchbaggery. Until you formally apologize for being a douche for the last 2 years you are a douche.

"This is about your completely illiterate ramblings about "exponential" growth."

LOL. What was wrong about my take on exponential growth?

What do you call this? https://www.mwra.com/biobot/biobotdata.htm

I think it's far more likely that you didn't understand my take on exponential growth than that I said anything incorrect about it. The first part of the curve is dominated by the exponential term, and over time, as immunity grows, and the virus runs out of victims, the curve begins to collapse, then does collapse. Overall, it's called "logistical growth" but at the beginning, before the second term comes to dominate, the difference between logistical and exponential is very small.

Maybe I misunderstood you. You don't seem to be an idiot. Ken said a lot of stuff I never agreed with, but there was a lot of denial going on, and still is. I will own that.

BTW, I opposed lockdowns from the beginning. You will find, if you look, posts that say that the lockdowns only shift the burden from those who can afford to stay home and have everything delivered to those who have to go to work delivering stuff. I even once linked a study that Steve McIntyre did that showed that the lockdowns in Toronto had no overall effect, and only shifted the burden to lower income people.

I opposed shuttering schools. I said that they should allow teachers over 50 to take early retirement and keep them open. I quoted a friend of mine who is a middle school teacher that she said that going to remote learning was devastating to the kids' educations.

I always said that I wouldn't take the jab, were I under thirty, that kids shouldn't be jabbed, that the jab never should be mandated, and most especially should not be mandated for children due to lack of risk and lack of knowledge, and that it made sense for people over 50 or even 60, who were the only ones really at risk, for the most part. I don't see anything wrong with that take.

I pushed masks as the policy alternative to lockdowns, and still don't see why people get all emotional about them.

Scott Adams points out on his Twitter feed that a lot of people hallucinate positions for him that he never espoused. I sympathize with him. It's OK if you don't like me, I don't care if you think I am an asshole, but you should try to be careful to root emotion out of your thinking, since you seem to desire to do analysis, I would think you would want to avoid the common pitfalls. You should google up "Attribution Bias," it's kind of the father of Trump Derangement Syndrome, the wikipedia article has suggestions on how to avoid it in your own thinking.

"Until you formally apologize for being a douche for the last 2 years you are a douche."

So no response to the fact that strokes in the young precede the jab until I formally apologize fo stuff I never said, or stuff you misunderstood?

I still like to read your posts Achilles, and I still will, even without an apology from you for calling me a "douche" and an "asshole."

tim in vermont said...

I also said that children should not be required to wear masks, as they were not that big a threat to spread the virus.

I pushed masks as the policy alternative to lockdowns, and still don't see why people get all emotional about them.

Because their positive effect is minor at best (and their best effect comes from wearing them at home, which means they're not a real "policy alternative to lockdowns"), their negative effects are severe (see harm to children's development from not seeing faces), they have to be massively uncomfortable to have any positive effect, and once the Democrat politicians who were imposing the mask mandates started violating the mandates themselves, they became a class war "elite" vs "peasant" signifier.
To put it another way: once the first Democrat politician / left wing celebrity got caught violating the mask mandates they claimed to support, and got away with it, masking stopped being a viable "solution". And once Fauci was photographed at the National's game sitting and chatting, unmasked, with someone not in his "bubble", and was allowed to keep his job, that told all the rest of us that any claim to believe in the positive effects of masking were utter bullshit.

It's like with global warming: Al Gore sold out to a petrostate, bought a big house with a swimming pool, and didn't bother to even put in solar heating for his swimming pool until people on the Right called him out on it.

When the bigwigs claiming to believe in something get away with violating that something at no cost to themselves, it tells us that what they claim to believe in is bullshit.

And when the supporters don't rip the apostate leaders to shreds, that tells us even the "supporters" don't really believe in it, that it's a matter of social identity and signaling, not a matter of science and reality.

tl;dr: If when Fauci was photographed unmasked at the National's every single masking supporter had immediately called for Fauci to be fired, and if he had been fired, that would have kept masking as a viable option

Once that didn't happen, masking became clear political BS theater

What's in it for them to do that?

Other than Collins, are they utterly corrupt douchebags who prefer the people on the other side? Yes, they are. (Collins is the mirror image of Manchin, but with actual integrity (see the Kavanaugh vote). She's from a solid Dem voting State whose voters keep on putting her back in office because they trust her not to screw them over. Unlike the others mentioned, she's the best that we could expect to get from a Maine Senator)

However, utterly corrupt douchebags like the extra graft they get from being a Committee Chair, rather than teh "ranking minority member".

Stop being so desperately eager to lose

Y'know who wants to lose? Mitt Romeny, collins, and Lisa Murky. And Cheney and Bush. They did everthing possible - short of outright campaigning for Biden- to defeat Trump and his agenda in 2016 and 2020.

They were literally smiling when Biden won in 2020. They supporting impeaching Trump in 2021. They joined with Pelosi and Schumer AGAINST the rest of the party. Because they wanted to help the Democrats. And Chicom Mitch is still rattling on about Jan 6th.

Everytime they can these Republican establishment types "reach accross the aisle" and try to destroy those to their Right. Sorry, all this "We Must band together to defeat the D's" is horseshit as long as these traitorous characters are in the Republican party.

COVID causes strokes too. That's why they tell you to take an aspirin daily for a couple of weeks after you recover.
_____________

They also tell you to get vaccinated, or boosted if you’re already vaxxed.  And they are very careful to break the data down into “fully vaccinated” and “not vaccinated,” the latter category dishonestly including people who have received at least one shot of the vax.

I wonder why they do this?*

I don't believe Collins did. The rest certainly did.

So what? Weren't not talking about them helping Trump here, we're talking about them pulling more power for the GOP so they can improve their ability to get graft
